Speaker:

July 1st, 2024.

2

:

And it's another edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Hate today.

4

:

We've got the prosper pride.

5

:

Event happening at frontier park.

6

:

And we would love to see you there.

7

:

Compass Bible church, north

Texas will have a presence.

8

:

The event is free.

9

:

There will be food trucks and all

sorts of things being handed out.

10

:

If you're in our area.

11

:

It would be great for you

to come drop by our tent.

12

:

Say hello.

13

:

I get a free goodie.

14

:

We would love to see you there.

15

:

And if perhaps you have some neighbors

who are not having any plans yet,

16

:

maybe invite them and bring them

along to, we would love to see you.

17

:

I'll be there.

18

:

Pastor PG we'll be there.

19

:

Our families will have several

volunteers they're serving.

20

:

It would be a great way to

spend your July 1st end.

21

:

This was an actual quote, said

multiple times less last year.

22

:

Quote.

23

:

This was the best firework

show I've ever seen.

24

:

I mean, I know that sing a lot.

25

:

In fact, I probably should

lower the bar for you.

26

:

So whatever in your mind,

you're conjuring up.

27

:

It's probably not that great,

but it was really good.

28

:

I'm not going to lie.

29

:

We really did enjoy the show.

30

:

You know, we've seen a million

shows by this point, I guess, a

31

:

millions of slight exaggeration,

but we've seen several shows.

32

:

We're expecting anything

amazing, but these shows.

33

:

I don't know if it's a Texas thing or

if it's a prosper thing in particular.

34

:

But I really enjoyed the show

and I really did appreciate it.

35

:

So if you have nothing to do on a July

1st, Monday, summer night, this would be a

36

:

good thing for you and your family to do.

37

:

And we'd love to see

you there at our booth.

38

:

Okay.

39

:

That's all I have.

40

:

Let's jump on it to the shortest book.

41

:

In the old Testament.

42

:

Obadiah.

43

:

Now, let me tell you all that we know

about Obadiah before we jumped up.

44

:

Hey, here's all that I knew about Obadiah.

45

:

You ready?

46

:

His name is Obadiah.

47

:

There you go.

48

:

That's all I got for you.

49

:

There's not a lot on this guy.

50

:

There's not a lot to say about him,

except for the fact that maybe the

51

:

dating of this book is a bit unclear.

52

:

You're reading it right now, but most

commentators think that this is probably

53

:

closer to the Babylonian campaign.

54

:

against Judah and then eat

them participates in this.

55

:

So we're talking a couple

hundred years from where we are.

56

:

Remember the kingdom

divides at about 9 31 BC.

57

:

Uh, the Northern kingdom is sacked

by the Assyrians in 7 21 7 22 BC.

58

:

And then in 5 86, BC is when the

Judean kingdom falls prey to Babylon.

59

:

Well, Obadiah probably writes to

the Southern kingdom, uh, in no,

60

:

he definitely right to the Southern

kingdom, but he's probably writing.

61

:

Around that timeframe

after the Babylonian exile.

62

:

So we're reading it today because the

editors of our Bible reading plan think.

63

:

It could have happened earlier, and

that's certainly a possibility it's

64

:

plausible, but the weight seems to err,

on the side of the Babylonian exile.

65

:

So as you read this or reading this from

the prophet Obadiah who we know nothing

66

:

about, except for the fact that he wrote

this great book, And that this book is

67

:

directed to Judah, the Southern kingdom.

68

:

Now important to know here

is that this book is directed

69

:

to Judah's neighbor actually.

70

:

And that would be Eden.

71

:

Eden is not only their closest

neighbor, but they are, again,

72

:

some of their closest family.

73

:

Eat them.

74

:

Is a nickname for Esau

as Esau's relatives.

75

:

And if you're a member.

76

:

Esau from Genesis.

77

:

This is Jacob's twin brother.

78

:

And remember Jacob and Esau

had, uh, some pretty difficult

79

:

relational status between the two.

80

:

Esau despised his birthright.

81

:

Jacob's swoops in takes the birthright.

82

:

And takes all that goes along with it.

83

:

The blessing included and Jacob becomes

the patriarch for Israel, right?

84

:

Israel, him, Jacob was renamed in Israel.

85

:

It's got 12 tribes.

86

:

And so you have from him, the entirety

of Israel, as you know it, and

87

:

this particular period in history.

88

:

Edam Esau's relatives are probably

still not happy about this.

89

:

They know their history, they

know Israel, they know Judah.

90

:

And so this is where we're landed here.

91

:

Edam in this particular instance

does not respond well when the

92

:

Babylonian exile takes place.

93

:

In fact, that's where we begin.

94

:

Uh, they are charged by

God with being proud.

95

:

With being lofty.

96

:

In fact, in verse three, it says the

pride of your heart has deceived.

97

:

You eat them.

98

:

You who live in the clefts of

the rocks in your lofty dwelling.

99

:

So they have some kind of

Eden might fortress that is

100

:

powerful and strong it's high.

101

:

And so they have a false

confidence in their dwellings.

102

:

They have a false assurance.

103

:

In their protections or what

they think are their protections.

104

:

And the same thing can happen to you.

105

:

And I may not look like a, a

dwelling, although it might, if you

106

:

have a large property, you have.

107

:

You know, alarm systems and you have

firearms to protect your family.

108

:

You might accidentally put your trust

in those things, as opposed to putting

109

:

your trust in the Lord of the things.

110

:

That would be a good thing

for you to keep in mind here.

111

:

He continues on in verses

five through seven.

112

:

He says, look, if these came to

you, if plunders came by night, how,

113

:

how you would have been destroyed.

114

:

Would they not steal only

enough for themselves?

115

:

So he's charging them with being worse

than some of these midnight thieves.

116

:

In verses eight and nine, he says,

will I not on that day, declares the

117

:

Lord destroy the Wiseman out of veto.

118

:

So he's threatening their destruction

and he's saying it's coming.

119

:

It's coming in fact, we'll get

there in a few moments here.

120

:

But before that, he says, here's

why you're going to suffer this

121

:

consequence in verses 10 through 14.

122

:

He details a list of how Edam

offended gods at sensibilities.

123

:

He said you did violence

to your brother, Jacob.

124

:

There's the family relationship.

125

:

Shame shall cover you.

126

:

You shall be cut off for ever, because

here's why verse 11, you did not.

127

:

Uh, you did not help your brother Esau.

128

:

You did not help your brother, Jacob.

129

:

You stood aloof.

130

:

On the day that stranger's

carried off as well.

131

:

If you were like one of them

in some way, they participated.

132

:

In the ransacking of Judah.

133

:

And in fact, in verse 12, it says

that they gloated over their brother.

134

:

They were happy about their misfortune.

135

:

They rejoiced over them.

136

:

They boasted.

137

:

And God says, Hey, don't do that.

138

:

No, don't steal his money.

139

:

Don't rejoice over him.

140

:

'cause I promise you verses 15 through 18.

141

:

There is a day coming where I will.

142

:

Enact vengeance.

143

:

That day is called the day of the Lord.

144

:

And you've heard this terminology before.

145

:

You're gonna hear it a lot more throughout

our scripture reading, but the day of

146

:

the Lord has both a near and a far term.

147

:

Application.

148

:

There is a near term application

where God deals with Eden, but

149

:

he's also, uh, using this term too.

150

:

To conjure up in your mind,

a far term application.

151

:

And as Christians, we know that they're

the, the ultimate far term application

152

:

will happen when Jesus establishes his

millennial reign and then, uh, issues

153

:

his judgment for all times, all places,

all peoples at the great white throne

154

:

judgment, there's multiple judgements.

155

:

But the day of the Lord is a season

of God's judgment and justice.

156

:

And that season has near

application and far applications.

157

:

So just keep that in mind here.

158

:

And God's saying to eat them.

159

:

Uh, I'm going to give you the

cup of my wrath and you're going

160

:

to drink it down to the dregs.

161

:

And you're going to suffer the

righteous wrath that you deserve.

162

:

But in Mount Zion, there shall be those

who escape and it shall be called holy.

163

:

There will be a remnant that God

protects that will not suffer his wrath.

164

:

In fact, they will possess

the possessions of EDA.

165

:

They will, they will enjoy the fruit.

166

:

Of of God's favor and his blessing.

167

:

Jacob's shall be a fire.

168

:

Joseph, a flame.

169

:

Esau will be the stubble.

170

:

So God's saying his people are going to

be the instrument of his fiery judgment,

171

:

which will consume the adversary.

172

:

And in this case, Esau, Esau.

173

:

It will be stubble.

174

:

Well, fast forward to the

rest of this chapter here.

175

:

And what you have is God's promise that.

176

:

They will be successful.

177

:

Israel slash Judah.

178

:

And Esau will not be.

179

:

And the kingdom in verse 21 shall be

the Lord's everything's going to be set.

180

:

Right.

181

:

And that time is coming, but it's not yet.

182

:

So even though you gloat and you

boast because you're seeming to

183

:

squash the squash, his people.

184

:

And that's not the end of the story.

185

:

They're going to be times when

you, and I think that the enemy

186

:

is winning, that the bad guys are

making progress and the challenge

187

:

for you and for eyes to recognize

that this is not the final story.

188

:

Remember the Christian's

best days are always ahead.

189

:

Even though we could look longingly

at yesteryear and say, oh man, I

190

:

really appreciate how in our culture,

we used to believe this and that.

191

:

And we used to vote this way in that way.

192

:

And now things are different.

193

:

Everything's different.

194

:

We're confused.

195

:

We're enacting ungodly laws and

instituting unjust organizations,

196

:

et cetera, et cetera.

197

:

Well, no, here that God has

all things under his purview.

198

:

There's not a single molecule

in the universe that is going

199

:

astray in God's economy.

200

:

He knows what he's doing.

201

:

And granted.

202

:

His justice in your mind may be slow.

203

:

It might be slower than you prefer,

but God's justice is on the way.

204

:

The day of the Lord is coming.

205

:

In the meantime then, Jesus calls

us to pray for enemies to bless

206

:

those who persecute us to do all

that we can to ensure that more

207

:

people enter the kingdom before his

judgment and his justice are enacted.

208

:

Okay.

209

:

Jump over to Psalm 82.

210

:

And as you're doing that, by the way.

211

:

Uh, you might struggle to find

books like Obadiah in your Bible.

212

:

Sometimes I do.

213

:

I have.

214

:

I'm going to confess to you.

215

:

I learned the books of the Bible.

216

:

Through a, do a kids song.

217

:

The Bible book, Bob, I had to go

through that over and over again.

218

:

I actually had to refresh it recently.

219

:

So I would encourage you.

220

:

If you struggle to remember where

things are in your Bible, to find some

221

:

way to remember that if you've ever

done partners, you had to do that.

222

:

You had to go and find a way to

memorize the old Testament and

223

:

the new Testament books in order.

224

:

And that's a good thing for you to

do, even though most of the time,

225

:

you don't need that if you have an

electronic source, but if you have

226

:

a physical Bible really helpful and

handy to know where everything is.

227

:

So I would recommend to you the Bible

book, Bob, by the group called go fish.

228

:

Really enjoyed that.

229

:

In fact, Uh, I will put

that in the show notes.

230

:

I hope I remember to do that.

231

:

I want to do that.

232

:

I'm going to do that.

233

:

So help me, God, I will

put that in there for you.

234

:

So if you struggle, like I do

remembering where stuff is.

235

:

The Bible book, Bob could

be a great help to you.

236

:

So I'm 82.

237

:

So many too is a unique Psalm

and most people are going to

238

:

tell you that this song is about.

239

:

The earthly judges that God is calling

to account and saying, I'm going

240

:

to judge you for your unjust rule.

241

:

And that's a really good interpretation.

242

:

But as you know, here in verse one,

it says God has taken his place

243

:

in notice in the divine council.

244

:

That's an interesting phrase.

245

:

Interesting word.

246

:

We saw something of this nature when

Ahab brought in Micaiah the son of a.

247

:

I am law two prophesies about what

would happen in their upcoming battle.

248

:

And of course, Makiah says, I saw in

heaven, there was this, there was a

249

:

divine council essentially is not the

same words, but the same concept is

250

:

captured where God says, who's going to

deceive a hap and then one comes forward

251

:

and says, here's how I'm going to do it.

252

:

And then God says, yes,

you're going to do that.

253

:

And you shall succeed.

254

:

It seems that this may

be talking about that.

255

:

And I'm going to say may cause

it's a strained interpretation.

256

:

Um, But it's valid.

257

:

It's viable.

258

:

Again, most people are going to interpret

this as saying God's speaking to the

259

:

human judges and saying basically.

260

:

Uh, how long will you

as little G gods rule?

261

:

And decide unjustly, how long will

you oppress the weak and the needy?

262

:

And that's really the,

the thrust of Psalm 82.

263

:

God essentially is saying to these

judges, whether they're human or in some

264

:

way, shape or form spiritual and their

spiritual, divinities now not divine

265

:

as in capital G God, but lowercase G

there's some kind of gods and perhaps

266

:

they're angelic angels who have fallen,

not entirely sure, but whoever these

267

:

beings are, whether they're human

judges or whether they're divine judges.

268

:

God says you're doing wrong.

269

:

I'm going to judge you now.

270

:

Uh, I said in verse six, you are God's

sons of the most high, all of you,

271

:

nevertheless like men, you shall die.

272

:

And fall, like any prints.

273

:

Which again, if we're talking about human

judges here, And that would be a very.

274

:

Odd few verses there.

275

:

If he's talking to humans, why not just

say you're just, you're going to die.

276

:

And someone would answer, well,

if they're exalted humans, they

277

:

may think that they're above this.

278

:

They're too lofty to even

conceive of their own death.

279

:

Maybe that's the case.

280

:

Or maybe this is again, uh, they're

spiritual beings that God is

281

:

promising judgment for in the future.

282

:

And it goes back to the day of the Lord.

283

:

God's going to set all things, right.

284

:

And that's also gonna include judging

the spiritual life or a spiritual realm.

285

:

And that's what you may have here.

286

:

In verse eight of Psalm 82.

287

:

The Psalmist ACEF says, arisal

God judged the earth for you

288

:

shall inherit all the nations.

289

:

So the ultimate trust then is that

God is going to rule judge justly.

290

:

And that time is yet to come and we're

praying for it's coming come quickly.

291

:

Lord Jesus.

292

:

We might say.

293

:

Psalm 83.

294

:

So many, three is a second Psalm

of ACF and he in this one here.

295

:

Is asking God.

296

:

To not be still to not be at peace.

297

:

He's saying, God, please come

and act upon our enemies.

298

:

There are people who are laying

crafty plans against your people.

299

:

They consult with one another.

300

:

They want to wipe out your heritage

and they do this all in one accord.

301

:

And he talks about all these

different people, groups, the people

302

:

of Moab, the people of Assyria.

303

:

He says that the children of lot, which

are the people we just talked about.

304

:

He says all of these people

are collaborating and colluding

305

:

to destroy your people.

306

:

In verses nine through 12, he recalls

how God has delivered them in the past.

307

:

You'll notice that this is an ongoing

occurrence within the scriptures.

308

:

Every time someone is confronted

with a difficult situation.

309

:

They have to, as a matter of

practice, remember how has

310

:

God dealt with us in the past?

311

:

What has God done in his

deliverance in the past?

312

:

And here you have something like this.

313

:

He recounts what happens in judges

chapters four through eight.

314

:

With, , Cicero and Jabin and aura.

315

:

And Zeb and some of the Kings

that they, they conquered.

316

:

And so he's reflecting on

what God has done in the past.

317

:

And he says, oh God, do this again.

318

:

Oh, God make them like whirling

dust, like chaff before the Windsor.

319

:

Uh, effectively meaningless,

nothing insignificant.

320

:

Uh, consume them's at

the mountains of blaze.

321

:

And then notice here, as he turns

in verses 16 through 18, he says,

322

:

fill their faces with shame that,

that they may seek your name.

323

:

Oh Lord.

324

:

Well, that's interesting.

325

:

He's not just saying enact judgment and

vengeance, just so you can destroy them.

326

:

He really wants him to know who

their God is, who YALI is.

327

:

So fill their faces with shame

that they may seek your name.

328

:

Old Lord.

329

:

Let them be put to shame

and dismay forever.

330

:

Let them perish and disgrace so that they

may know that you alone, whose name is the

331

:

Lord are the most high over all the earth.

332

:

That's a good direction for

you to pray as you think about

333

:

the enemies of God right now.

334

:

And there are plenty.

335

:

You might've seen the debate

recently and thought, Lord, there

336

:

are many enemies against your

people against wisdom and justice.

337

:

A good way to pray is to

say Lord, please do good.

338

:

By judging the evil that you see and do.

339

:

So in order that people would know you.

340

:

That's one of those delicate balances.

341

:

Isn't it.

342

:

It's a hard one to strike because

so often we get angry and perhaps

343

:

righteously angry against sin.

344

:

But notice here, the way that we

pray is also going to shape the fact

345

:

that we want people to know Christ.

346

:

We want people to repent to turn to him

and to know that he is the one true God.

347

:

So as you pray this morning,

or you pray today, Make sure
