Transcripts

Steven Webb:

Welcome to a nice little Zen meditation.

Steven Webb:

The gift of not needing to fix.

Steven Webb:

So just before I sail down into a little Dharma talk, just allow your body to relax.

Steven Webb:

Allow your mind to go a little bit quieter.

Steven Webb:

And just become comfortable in this moment.

Steven Webb:

You don't have to do anything with your breath.

Steven Webb:

Just become aware.

Steven Webb:

You don't have to do anything with your body. It knows how to relax. relax

Steven Webb:

And you don't have to do anything with this moment. This moment knows how to be this moment.

Steven Webb:

We often think we need to change our breath or we need to relax our body. Those things can

Steven Webb:

just happen if we allow them to happen.

Steven Webb:

Very similar to sitting next to a river. You

Steven Webb:

don't try to change the river, you just allow the river to be what it is.

Steven Webb:

So just allow your body to be relaxed in this moment.

Steven Webb:

Allow your breath to be what it is.

Steven Webb:

Breathing in calm.

Steven Webb:

Breathing out relax.

Steven Webb:

And as we're relaxing in this moment, I want to share something that might sound strange at first.

Steven Webb:

Zen doesn't fix your life.

Steven Webb:

It just stops you needing to.

Steven Webb:

We spend most of our days managing things, fixing what's broken, adjusting the story,

Steven Webb:

correcting the past or forecasting the future.

Steven Webb:

Somewhere along the line, we are told that peace is earned through effort.

Steven Webb:

That once we've fixed it all, then we can rest.

Steven Webb:

I think Zen turns that completely on its head.

Steven Webb:

It doesn't give you a better version of yourself.

Steven Webb:

It shows you there's nothing wrong with the one that's here right now.

Steven Webb:

Zen asks you to sit. And just sit.

Steven Webb:

Not to escape pain.

Steven Webb:

Not to reach some divine bliss,

Steven Webb:

but to wake up to this.

Steven Webb:

The breath.

Steven Webb:

The sound.

Steven Webb:

The thought that says, this is pointless.

Steven Webb:

Zen says, be with it anyway.

Steven Webb:

So this practice is not about fixing your anxiety or numbing your grief or

Steven Webb:

finding the perfect silence. This

Steven Webb:

is about being the sky that allows every kind of weather.

Steven Webb:

Nothing needs to be sorted before you begin. You just begin.

Steven Webb:

So let's continue to sit together

Steven Webb:

and As you're breathing in, calm. Breathing out, relax.

Steven Webb:

You may notice thoughts coming in your head. Just

Steven Webb:

allow them to be.

Steven Webb:

You may notice some tension in your body. Just

Steven Webb:

allow it to be.

Steven Webb:

You may notice the temperature on your face. Allow

Steven Webb:

it to be.

Steven Webb:

And you may notice some thoughts that want to change this moment.

Steven Webb:

Just gently let them pass.

Steven Webb:

And you can say silently, this moment doesn't need to be different.

Steven Webb:

This moment doesn't need to be different.

Steven Webb:

And we don't even need to focus on our breath.

Steven Webb:

Just be aware.

Steven Webb:

Sounds come and go.

Steven Webb:

Sensations come and go.

Steven Webb:

Emotions come and go. They

Steven Webb:

are all welcome here now.

Steven Webb:

Let it all just come and go like clouds across an open sky.

Steven Webb:

And now let's just spend a moment turning our attention to the watcher,

Steven Webb:

the awareness behind the experience. And

Steven Webb:

just ask, who is aware right now?

Steven Webb:

You don't need to answer. Just notice the silence that follows the question. Who

Steven Webb:

is aware right now

Steven Webb:

You may notice the confusion, the

Steven Webb:

mix between that pure awareness and

Steven Webb:

then the

Steven Webb:

thought, the feeling, the moment, the warmth on your face, the sound, the

Steven Webb:

breath. It

Steven Webb:

all comes and goes, not only in the real sense, but also in the awareness of now.

Steven Webb:

Maybe just rest in the feeling of enoughness. What

Steven Webb:

does enoughness mean to you?

Steven Webb:

And just remind yourself.

Steven Webb:

Nothing to do.

Steven Webb:

Nowhere to get.

Steven Webb:

Nothing missing.

Steven Webb:

Nothing to do. Nowhere to get. Nothing missing.

Steven Webb:

Doesn't that just feel like a whole weight lifted off?

Steven Webb:

Like, wow.

Steven Webb:

It's really true that nothing needs fixing. Everything is okay. Below all the

Steven Webb:

noise.

Steven Webb:

Below all the confusion.

Steven Webb:

Just right here now.

Steven Webb:

Nothing to do.

Steven Webb:

Nowhere to get. And

Steven Webb:

nothing is missing.

Steven Webb:

And just a reminder of this moment.

Steven Webb:

We spend our life reading books. We

Steven Webb:

spend our life watching Tv and other social media that's all telling us what

Steven Webb:

to do and how we can improve our lives. If we just do this,

Steven Webb:

when really all we want is just peace. Just quiet. We just want that ah.

Steven Webb:

And you have it right now.

Steven Webb:

This was always here.

Steven Webb:

Just the noise of life buries it.

Steven Webb:

And this is what Zen is. Zen is bringing this to every day, to every moment, to that storm.

Steven Webb:

If you can sit in this, this

Steven Webb:

moment of just nothing to do, nowhere to get, and nothing is missing.

Steven Webb:

In the storm there is a calm and a peace as well.

Steven Webb:

It's just recognising that.

Steven Webb:

So we're just gonna sit for another minute. I'll keep an eye on the timer.

Steven Webb:

And just be aware of your breath.

Steven Webb:

And just be the one that's aware of the breath.

Steven Webb:

Nothing to do.

Steven Webb:

Nothing missing.

Steven Webb:

Although we did not go anywhere, welcome back.

Steven Webb:

And just generally become aware of your breath.

Steven Webb:

And just gently open your eyes and wiggle your fingers and toes. And just do a bow inwardly to yourself.

Steven Webb:

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for being there.

Steven Webb:

And just remember, Zen doesn't fix your life. It just stops you needing to. And

Steven Webb:

this peaceful moment is there for you whenever you need it. Whenever you want to go below the noise, just

Steven Webb:

sit, breathe in calm, breathe out relax and allow the moment to be what it is.

Steven Webb:
