Shownotes

No goal here. Nothing to achieve. Not even relaxing, because that would be doing something. Easier said than done, and I know it.

About 13 minutes with Steven Webb's calm voice.

We have built a world where even sitting down to relax is a task on the list. So this one asks for nothing at all. The breath comes and goes, sounds come and go, and the thought that says this is a waste of time comes and goes too. You let all of it. What is left is a moment with no pressure in it anywhere.

Stevens new course: Finding Peace in Everyday Life (you choose how much to pay)

Transcripts

Steven Webb:

Welcome to the Do Nothing Meditation. It's a journey to the heart of the present moment.

Steven Webb:

And as we embark on this meditation, remember that there is no goal to this meditation.

Steven Webb:

There's nothing to accomplish.

Steven Webb:

You're just going to simply be, just observe and allow yourself and the experience and the beauty of this moment

Steven Webb:

to be just as it is.

Steven Webb:

So there isn't even the intention to relax or the intention to do anything at all.

Steven Webb:

Easier said than done. I totally understand.

Steven Webb:

While you're finding a comfortable position,

Steven Webb:

You can choose to gently close your eyes or

Steven Webb:

just soften your gaze a few feet in front of you

Steven Webb:

And just notice your breath.

Steven Webb:

Notice how it breathes in and out.

Steven Webb:

Notice that it just happens whether you're aware of it or not.

Steven Webb:

Notice that you don't have to do anything with it.

Steven Webb:

You may notice how this moment just becomes quieter by itself.

Steven Webb:

Just by doing nothing with this moment.

Steven Webb:

You may notice the way your body just moves back and forward very slightly.

Steven Webb:

You may notice sounds around you.

Steven Webb:

Whether it's your awareness of your breath or awareness of the sounds, awareness

Steven Webb:

of my words.

Steven Webb:

Be okay with whatever that awareness is.

Steven Webb:

And remembering you don't have to do anything with It

Steven Webb:

We spend most of our lives thinking we've got to do something with everything.

Steven Webb:

Even when we sit down to relax, we've got to sit down and relax.

Steven Webb:

Created a world where everybody is busy and everybody's doing something.

Steven Webb:

And when we sit down to do nothing,

Steven Webb:

We almost always find something to do.

Steven Webb:

And if you find your mind wandering, just do nothing with it.

Steven Webb:

Just be totally aware with whatever's coming up.

Steven Webb:

Just observing the sensation of breathing.

Steven Webb:

Observing your thoughts.

Steven Webb:

You may notice as feelings are rising

Steven Webb:

There may be desires to do something with this moment.

Steven Webb:

There may be feelings of this may be a waste of time.

Steven Webb:

And all these things are okay. Allow

Steven Webb:

them to be and do nothing with them.

Steven Webb:

Just like as if you're watching an object on the side

Steven Webb:

And you don't have to do anything with it.

Steven Webb:

What a beautiful feeling to have.

Steven Webb:

What a beautiful conscious awareness moment to have.

Steven Webb:

As your breath comes and goes,

Steven Webb:

The sounds of my voice comes and goes

Steven Webb:

the Thoughts come and go

Steven Webb:

The Sounds come and go.

Steven Webb:

The uncomfortableness of sitting comes and goes.

Steven Webb:

And you notice that every single thing that you become aware of is not really permanent.

Steven Webb:

It can almost go just as quick as it arrived.

Steven Webb:

And doing nothing is like having an equal balance between the world around us and the world within us.

Steven Webb:

There's no pressure.

Steven Webb:

There's no feeling of expansion. There's no feeling of... Pushing in either.

Steven Webb:

It's just accepting this present moment for all the beauty it is.

Steven Webb:

And even accepting the present moment is almost doing something.

Steven Webb:

If you've been mindful and thinking of this moment as a

Steven Webb:

beautiful moment, that's doing something.

Steven Webb:

Even if it's really subtle.

Steven Webb:

And now we are going to do something for a moment.

Steven Webb:

I'm going to go through three affirmations.

Steven Webb:

Knowing you don't have to do anything with this moment I'm recognising the beauty in this moment.

Steven Webb:

And let these words really sink into your heart, resonating with every part of your body.

Steven Webb:

And the first one is,

Steven Webb:

I'm present.

Steven Webb:

I am present.

Steven Webb:

Just as I am.

Steven Webb:

Just as I am.

Steven Webb:

I embrace the beauty of this moment.

Steven Webb:

I embrace the beauty of this moment

Steven Webb:

As this meditation comes to a close, and

Steven Webb:

aware of how calm you already are,

Steven Webb:

aware of how ready you are for the rest of the day,

Steven Webb:

Be aware that just doing nothing with the present moment is also doing something.

Steven Webb:

But what a gift it is to not have to have the pressure or intention of doing something.

Steven Webb:

You are totally free in this moment.

Steven Webb:

So take a moment to notice how you feel.

Steven Webb:

Remember The peace and stillness you may experience in this meditation.

Steven Webb:

It's always with you.

Steven Webb:

It's accessible at any time. You can just...

Steven Webb:

Bring your awareness to your breath and just recognise for the next few minutes you don't have to do anything.

Steven Webb:

And as you move through your day, carry this essence with you. The Do Nothing Meditation. Let it remind you

Steven Webb:

of your power in the present moment. The beauty of any present moment and the wisdom that arises from simply

Steven Webb:

just being.

Steven Webb:

That simply being in this moment is so powerful.

Steven Webb:

There's so much joy and compassion and Peacefulness in any given moment if we just

Steven Webb:

allow ourselves to see it for the beauty it is.

Steven Webb:

As you gently open your eyes, shake out your arms and just look around the room and recognise how much

Steven Webb:

of your day that you think you've got to do something and you really don't have to

Steven Webb:

just takes a lot of the pressure away.

Steven Webb:
