As much as I rail against the "podcasting is cheap and easy" mentality,
I have to admit it:podcasting is cheap and easy for a lot of podcasters.
I have to admit it:But your content doesn't have to sound that way.
I have to admit it:Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.
I have to admit it:So I had a bad thing happen to me not long ago.
I have to admit it:I tried to hide this from you, or shelter you from this, but it's going
I have to admit it:to come out and you're going to hear it.
I have to admit it:I'm not sure how it happened, but I take great pains to ensure that
I have to admit it:things like this do not happen.
I have to admit it:But during the recording of another podcast, not this show, my audio was bad.
I have to admit it:I know.
I have to admit it:The horror of it all!
I have to admit it:And not so bad that you can't hear clearly what I'm saying, but it's
I have to admit it:so bad that it's markedly different from the way I strive to sound on,
I have to admit it:well, all of my recordings, right?
I have to admit it:Whether it's a show I'm producing or whether it's an appearance I'm making on
I have to admit it:another podcast, I want to sound good.
I have to admit it:It's not bad enough for us to scrap the entire episode.
I have to admit it:I've done that before.
I have to admit it:But it is bad enough that, at the top of the show, there's a
I have to admit it:disclaimer that's going to be placed that says, "Evo's audio is bad."
I have to admit it:I don't like that.
I have to admit it:Now, people brand new to the show are thinking, "Oh, great, yet
I have to admit it:another audio pre-Madonna who won't accept anything except perfection."
I have to admit it:And while that statement is directionally true, it's very superlative
I have to admit it:and that does not describe me.
I have to admit it:The reality is I care less about perfection, but I won't settle
I have to admit it:for anything that isn't quality.
I have to admit it:Now to me, quality means doing the best you can with what you have to work with.
I have to admit it:That's my definition.
I have to admit it:That means your environment, your equipment, your voice, your experience,
I have to admit it:your level of comfort, all of those things are part of the what you have
I have to admit it:to work with portion of that statement.
I have to admit it:And I think all of them can be made better, up to the point where they're
I have to admit it:all working together that allow you to make a quality podcast or appear
I have to admit it:as a quality guest on a podcast.
I have to admit it:But not a perfect podcast.
I have to admit it:Perfect is an imaginary destination.
I have to admit it:It's a goal we strive toward.
I have to admit it:But quality?
I have to admit it:Now that's a commitment you can make to every single piece of content
I have to admit it:you produce starting right now.
I have to admit it:My approach to quality this way - again, doing the best you can with
I have to admit it:what you have to work with - is why you won't hear me giving a lot
I have to admit it:of How To advice on this podcast.
I have to admit it:Look, every word in that phrase, "doing the best you can with what you have to
I have to admit it:work with" is unique to every podcaster.
I have to admit it:And it's your best.
I have to admit it:Not everyone's best.
I have to admit it:It's what you have to work with.
I have to admit it:Not what everyone else has to work with.
I have to admit it:Approaching quality this way means you are not chasing the perfect microphone.
I have to admit it:You're not looking for the perfect recording solution or trying to select
I have to admit it:the perfect format for your episodes.
I have to admit it:Heck, you're not even looking for the best of those things or even
I have to admit it:the top rated of those things because those things are things.
I have to admit it:They're just objects, objects that will perform differently under your
I have to admit it:hands, like they perform differently under my hands or as they would perform
I have to admit it:differently under someone else's hands.
I have to admit it:It's the you that brings the best to the party, not those objects.
I have to admit it:Making a personal commitment to quality means you care.
I have to admit it:You care about your own listeners to your own show.
I have to admit it:You care about the listeners of other shows that you appear on.
I have to admit it:You care about the craft of podcasting.
I have to admit it:And also that means you're committing to quality in all the
I have to admit it:things you do with podcasting.
I have to admit it:Again, every single time you're interviewed on another podcast.
I have to admit it:Yes, every episode of your podcast, but also every presentation
I have to admit it:you give at a conference.
I have to admit it:Everything you do podcast-y, make that commitment to quality.
I have to admit it:But remember, a commitment to quality does not mean a refusal to
I have to admit it:accept anything that is not perfect.
I have to admit it:A commitment to quality doesn't mean you can't act like a goofball
I have to admit it:sometimes, lord knows I do.
I have to admit it:A commitment to quality simply means that you are confident that you are doing the
I have to admit it:best you can with what you have today.
I have to admit it:And if you can get to better tomorrow, you will.
I have to admit it:With that, I shall be back directly with yet another Podcast Pontifications.
I have to admit it:Cheers!
