Progressivism began as a movement in response to the bad of the industrialization of the United States. The goal of the original Progressivism was to move to more equal social conditions for Americans consistent with the original American principles. There were Republican and Democrat progressives.

Today, Progressivism is no longer about progress to improve, it is about progress to move farther down the path until the issue falls off of a cliff.
