Six seals down, one to go — and by the end of this chapter, every rank of humanity, kings and slaves alike, is asking the same terrified question: who can possibly stand? In this episode of The Bible in Small Steps, I walk through Revelation 6 verse by verse, from the four horsemen thundering out one after another to the martyrs crying out from under the altar to the cosmic upheaval that closes the chapter. This is the episode I feared most when I started this project — and it turned out to be less about horror-movie imagery and more about how seriously God takes both sin and the suffering of His people.
The Four Horsemen, One Seal at a Time
Each horseman gets pulled apart from the popular Hollywood picture most of us grew up with. The white horse and rider carry a victor’s crown, not a king’s — this is conquest, not Christ. The red horse is war, the black horse is famine-level inflation that hits the poor while sparing luxury goods, and the pale horse is Death himself, granted authority over a fourth of the earth.
Seal Five: The Martyrs Under the Altar
The pattern breaks completely. No horse this time — just souls who died for their testimony, asking “how long” in a plea for justice, not vengeance. The answer isn’t a timeline; it’s a promise that the waiting has purpose and an end.
Seal Six: Cosmic Upheaval
Earthquake, blackened sun, blood-red moon, falling stars — imagery pulled straight from Isaiah, Joel, and Jesus’s own words on the Mount of Olives. I talk through why this “birth pangs” pattern shows up again and again across Scripture, and why it applies to more than one point in history at once.
Why the Lamb’s Wrath Is the Most Unsettling Image in the Book
The gentlest image in Scripture becomes the most fearsome. I sit with why that contrast matters — and what it means that there’s nowhere left to hide except in the very Lamb whose wrath is being described.
Meditate, Pray, Share
I close with a reflection on the “caves” we build in our own lives — the false safety nets we run to instead of running toward the Lamb — and a challenge to sit with what you’re waiting on God to answer.
