Meet Minister Mericha Walker—a bold voice for this generation and a trailblazer in youth ministry across The Bahamas.

Born and raised in New Providence, she holds a double bachelor's degree in Youth and Music Ministry from Prairie College in Alberta, Canada, and has faithfully served in ministry since the age of sixteen. With over two decades of experience, Mericha is now the first female General Youth Director of The Highway Church of God Bahamas, overseeing 19 churches throughout the nation.

She's a certified counselor with training in suicide prevention, violent behavior, addiction, and grief, a two-time Marlin Award nominee, an Elevation Award Nominee, a Bahamas Gospel Music Award recipient, and was honored with the Louise Simmons National Youth Ally Award in 2021. Mericha has facilitated intervention programs in C V Bethel, S C McPherson, C H Reeves, R M Bailey, Government High Public Schools respectively.

An author of four impactful books—Lead On: Fueling Your Fire as a Youth Leader, Building Dynamic Foundations, The 4T's Approach to Youth Ministry and Hephzibah: The Desire of All Nations 21-Day Devotional—Mericha equips leaders to build strong, Spirit-led youth ministries. She sings solo and with the gospel group Denczil Rolle & Friends, teaches voice lessons, and facilitates leadership seminars. She's also the founder of The Style Concierge, where she blends faith, fashion, and function with flair.

Currently serving as the Minister over Teen LIFE Youth at LIFE Worship Center, Mericha is also the manager and radio host of "Girl Talk" on Glory 93.9FM; a show impacting and inspiring women around the globe.

What part of the world are you in today?

I'm in Nassau, the Bahamas.

The place where God lives, is what Dr. Miles Monroe would say.

Oh, there's nothing as beautiful as a Caribbean voice.

Come on now, yeah?

Absolutely.

How did you come to meet Jesus?

I am definitely a church girl, so I had a grandmother that placed me on the altar at a very young age.

I had no choice but to be saved, but I actually got saved in an Anglican church, or what most people would call Episcopalian, but a very forward, a very progressive Pentecostal Anglican church.

I was only six years old when my grandmother placed me on the altar and told me, you are going to get saved because God needs you.

So you go up to that altar and you give your life to the Lord.

And then of course, like a good church girl, I went to a Christian school as well, so I had many more opportunities to give my life to the Lord.

That's very cool.

After that, right?

But that was the moment that I would say I remember, that I still recall even as an adult.

I was six years old and my grandmother told me, no, you go to that altar.

The moment that I would say I surrendered my life to God, I would never forget it.

I was 14 years old on my school campus and we were having a revival, believe it or not, on my school campus.

And just under the tree, after the revival was done, a group of students, we got together and we just decided to pray.

And that was when I made a conscious decision as a teenager, no, I'm going to serve God with my life.

And yeah, my life has never been the same since.

Are you singing along?

Because my reference point to your voice is singing.

So are you singing along six to 14?

So singing was always a thing for me.

I would say that I didn't really start singing like gospel music though until probably my pre-teens.

Prior to that, my vocal training was actually in jazz and classical music.

Do you think that the six-year-old coming to Christ versus the 14-year-old coming to Christ would have changed the impact if it went the other direction in terms of what you would be singing and who you would be singing for?

Absolutely, absolutely.

Actually, to this day, my close friends would make comments and say to me, you sound much better singing secular music than you do singing gospel.

Which is kind of ridiculous, but I understand where they're coming from.

But my heart is with God and I gave my life to him and I'm not even comfortable listening to secular music, let alone singing it.

So I don't think that the six-year-old who was doing what he was doing, even though her grandmother had placed her in this positioning, the six-year-old who was starting to mature and then eventually became that 14-year-old, I don't think I had any other choice but to really submit to God.

I honestly can't see it happening any other way.

It's just, of course, it's because it happened that way, but I couldn't see it happening any other way, to be honest.

That is how strong your choice was.

Absolutely, I was resolute.

Resolute, I love that.

So take me through the rest of the years from 14, take me to what happens next.

Well, I got really, really active in my church youth ministry to the point that by the age of 16 at graduation, I was actually running the youth ministry at my old church.

It was me and two of actually my peers at that time.

We had a situation where we had a church split, and when those persons left the church, all of the youth leaders that existed at that time, along with the volunteers, would have left.

And so our priest at the time said, let the young people lead the youth ministry, and they gave us some advisors so we could go to.

And so me and two of my other friends, three of us, we ended up being the persons who were in charge of the youth ministry.

So I basically would say I settled into giving God my best and my yes at 14, and two years later, I ended up in youth ministry.

I served in youth ministry at my church while I was in college, because I went to college locally, served in youth ministry, and then I would say about at the age of 19, one day sitting in my classroom, I was in a music theory class.

At that time, my major in college was music education.

And one day sitting in class, I just heard the Spirit of the Lord said, this is not where you're supposed to be.

And I got up out of that class, went to the administration building, and withdrew from all of my classes.

I went home that day.

Is this in a book?

Is this in a book?

No, it's not.

Not yet.

I withdrew out of all of my classes, and I went to my mom, and I said to my mom, I think I'm supposed to go to Bible college.

I think I'm supposed to be somebody's pastor.

I feel like that's what the call on my life is.

And she said, well, if that's what you will, she said, let's go sit down with your priest at the time, Fr.

Bullock was the priest.

She said, let's go sit down with him.

Let's see what schools he recommends.

I'm shaking in my boots thinking he's going to tell me absolutely not.

Women don't be pastors.

All the little things that people say to you.

I really went into that conversation expecting to hear those things.

And when I went to him, he said, I don't see you as a priest.

I see you as a pastor.

So he said, let's find a Bible college.

Let's find a Bible college for you.

He found a Bible college, and he said, and the church is going to pay for you to go.

Wow.

I just got chills there through my whole body.

Yeah, that's amazing.

And he said to me, he said, I don't want you to just do youth ministry.

He said, let's put the worship in there as well, because you are a worshiper.

You are a worship leader.

And so we settled on Prairie College.

It was Prairie Bible College at the time, but it's now Prairie College in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada.

So you're leaving the Bahamas now.

I'm leaving the Bahamas now.

I'm leaving the Bahamas as a 21-year-old now.

I didn't leave until I was 21.

And so I leave the Bahamas, and I finish my first year of college.

And when I'm done with my first year of college, the church goes into another transition, and the priest who sent me off to college is no longer in charge of the church.

And the church no longer commits to the scholarship that it's given me after my first year.

I spent my entire savings on my second year, because in between the day that I left school in Nassau, I left college in Nassau, and then I went off to college.

I worked for two years before I went off to college, so I had some money saved up.

So I covered my tuition for my second year and started to panic when year three came.

My mom did everything that she could to get me some help, and the last semester in my third year, my college said to me, we value you so much.

We are going to give you a full scholarship for your last year, your last semester in your third year, and for your entire fourth year.

So my college basically paid me to be there.

I ended up touring Canada, representing my college at college fairs, at different missions events, because the college that I went to was very missions oriented.

So whenever there was a missions conference or anything in the area, anything in the western Canada area, they would send me.

And so I ended up becoming the poster child for my school's campus, and the Lord exposed me to so many people internationally.

It was just crazy.

The in North America, particularly in the Seattle, Washington area.

So you were in Vancouver, were you?

I was in Alberta, which is more northeast of Vancouver, yeah.

How did you get in relationships with the western side of America?

Because the school would have sent me to represent them at different college fairs, at different missions conferences, at different youth conferences.

I just got exposed so much.

It was just crazy.

At any point, are you thinking to yourself, wait a minute, this definitely was God that told me to leave?

Absolutely, absolutely.

Let me paint the picture for you fully.

Imagine walking into a school campus my first year.

I'm the only Black female in the town.

Not on the campus, in the whole town.

Okay?

So whenever I move, everybody knows who I am.

And by the time I graduated, of course, my school had started a program for Muslim background believers.

And so there were other Black persons on the campus.

But for some strange reason, it's just, God just had me standing out.

And I can't describe it any other way.

He, if I could describe it, he made a distinction of me.

You know that distinction that the Bible talks about when God says to the children of Israel, he says, I'm going to place you in Goshen, where there's so much things going on around you that should be impacting you, that should be having a negative effect on you, but I placed you in Goshen because there's a distinction on you.

That is the story of my life.

He's always, he's always, always made a distinction when it came to who I am, everywhere I've gone, everywhere I've been in the world.

When you're speaking to youth now, and you're telling them your story, how much impact does it have on them?

It's crazy that I don't really get to share as much of the triumphant parts of my story with young people.

I think you're highlighting to me that I probably should share more of that.

The parts that they usually hear about is after I was done with this amazing journey of college that I went on 23 job interviews and got no for all of them before I moved back home.

That's usually the part of the story that I tell, and how that literally started a seed of rejection in my life that I had to, I had to not only go to God concerning, but I also had to go to therapy concerning, and I had to process that.

And so it's moments like that, that young people look at me and like, I can relate to that because I know what it feels like to be rejected.

I know what it feels like to not be chosen.

I know what it feels like to be abandoned.

And so that part of my journey, I share a lot.

I definitely have to be a better youth faster and share the triumphant parts of my testimony.

Yeah.

Well, I think it's, I think it's a double, I think it's a package because most definitely what you're telling me has motivated me by just listening.

Yeah.

That, that listening is so important.

However, you're bringing the truth and the reality of, Hey, when Joshua and they went out to check out the land, right?

Yeah.

Perspective was what it was.

It didn't mean that what the others saw wasn't what was there for them.

Right.

So yeah, a hundred percent make it the package deal because what a powerful story, because it proves that you knew who you were.

Absolutely.

It's powerful.

I always remember my mother telling me when I was younger, when I told her from someone that I'm sure I love, you don't know what love is.

I know.

All you know is love, right?

But the truth is, if you think about it, of course I'd know what love is because my parents would have loved me.

My grandparents would have loved me.

Yeah.

We grew up with extended families models here where grannies right there and cousins are there.

Yes.

I didn't know what love was.

Yes.

And you expressed a story that represents that you knew the voice of God.

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

And of course it's definitely matured and shifted for me over the years.

I'm not going to say that like every time I thought I heard God, I got it right.

Definitely not.

But in this particular case, when I look at my now, like when I look at who Marisa is in 2026, I know without a shadow of doubt that I heard the voice of God concerning my purpose in the earth.

And I think the deciding factor, like that thing that made me just do something so ridiculous.

When I look back at it, I said, you know what?

That only could have been God because I am such a planner.

I am such a calculated individual.

I am definitely not a risk taker when I choose to make decisions in my carnal state without prayer.

If my will was the thing that I operated by, I would have never left the classroom that day.

If I had been 100% myself.

And so I knew that not only was I hearing the voice of God, I was being led by the spirit of God.

Like the spirit of God was giving me boldness to make a decision that I wouldn't normally make.

I definitely was like, when I look back at it, I was like, girl, that was so out of character for you.

But the provision as well though, Marisa, the provision, right?

Because you said, yeah, this person is going to say, no, there's no way you're being called, right?

Like, get back to class.

But God has just been so kind.

He's been so kind.

Amazing.

So, all right.

What would you say to future you five years from today?

Well, first I would say, girl, you got through it.

You got through it and it didn't kill you.

That's the first thing that I would say to myself.

And then the next thing that I would say is, no matter what it is that you feel may be delayed or even deterred concerning you, know that God is not like man that he should lie or the son of man that he would change his mind.

If he said it is your portion, he's going to do it.

And I would remind, I would remind this girl, like, girl, look, take a look at where you've come from and always remember that your ladder is greater.

So, if you can look back at where you come from and marvel at how far God has brought you, just imagine the greater glory that's ahead of you.
