Hello.

Brit:

Thank you so much for having me.

Diane:

So let's kick things off with a little bit about

Diane:

you and your business journey.

Brit:

Okay, so me and my business journey.

Brit:

So I started my business back in 2016, which feels like a long time ago now.

Brit:

I don't where did it, where did it go?

Brit:

So prior to that, I was a director of marketing for a small

Brit:

company in my local area and.

Brit:

know, I was young in my twenties.

Brit:

I was like, you know what, I think, I think I could do this for other companies

Brit:

and be my own boss and let's go try that.

Brit:

So I quit my job, didn't have any clients.

Brit:

And by the next Monday I had a client.

Brit:

And then by the next Monday I had another client and it just worked out.

Brit:

I, it's the craziest thing, but I was meant, I was meant to be my own boss.

Brit:

I'm meant to do my own thing.

Brit:

I'm really glad that I, I did take that leap because it fits me and who I am.

Brit:

So that was back in 2016, started an agency model type of

Brit:

business and by 2017 people were.

Brit:

You know, online they were finding me and they were saying you

Brit:

know, I don't necessarily need you to do the marketing for me.

Brit:

I'm not quite there yet, but would you coach me?

Brit:

And 2017 coaching was just like the thing.

Brit:

I mean, it kind of still, I guess it kind of still is, but

Brit:

it was really popular back then.

Brit:

So I said, yeah, that sounds really good to me.

Brit:

Let's try it out.

Brit:

And I loved it.

Brit:

So I over time stopped working.

Brit:

The agency model really went full force into the coaching model.

Brit:

Started a, a podcast in 2017 that went really well, and then

Brit:

it was about 2018, mid 2018.

Brit:

I.

Brit:

Got the, I say a download about marketing personality types.

Brit:

What happens when we pull this world of marketing and marry it with this

Brit:

world of personality types, two worlds that I have always loved.

Brit:

What happens when we pull them together?

Brit:

I've never seen anybody do this before.

Brit:

What would it look like?

Brit:

So I open up a Google sheet, I start figuring it out, and in

Brit:

like an hour it was downloaded.

Brit:

There was something there.

Brit:

I started kind of talking about it a little bit with

Brit:

my close mastermind friends.

Brit:

Talked about it on a podcast, just kind of dropped it in, like didn't

Brit:

even really mean to talk about it.

Brit:

And that podcast host was like, wait a second.

Brit:

This is major.

Brit:

Like have you, have you put any actual thought into making this a thing?

Brit:

And that was what I needed to say.

Brit:

Like, yeah, let's try to make this a thing, make this a thing.

Brit:

And that's when Marketing Personalities was born.

Brit:

So I created the website.

Brit:

It's gone through many iterations, but still@marketingpersonalities.com and it's

Brit:

where you can still go to this day to find out what your best marketing strategy is.

Brit:

Based on your Myers-Briggs personality type, and that's the core of my

Brit:

business now, still do a little coaching, still do a little agency

Brit:

work, you know, here and there for like the great, great clients that I

Brit:

just really, really wanna work with.

Brit:

But the core of it is marketing personalities.

Diane:

So, Let's first of all just dive a little into Mayers Briggs or M

Diane:

bti, just in case anyone listening is like I don't really know what it is.

Diane:

And I know that you, in your work, kind of lifted into several categories,

Diane:

which maybe makes it a bit easier for people to think about as well

Diane:

versus trying to remember.

Diane:

I can't remember how many combinations of types or personalities there can actually

Diane:

be, but let's dive just a little into the basics of

Brit:

Yeah.

Brit:

So when I started, when I pulled marketing and personality types

Brit:

together, I had to make that big decision of what personality.

Brit:

Assessment or indicator am I gonna use?

Brit:

The one that I decided on was Myers-Briggs type Indicator or the M B T I.

Brit:

And there were a couple reasons for that.

Brit:

I get that all the time.

Brit:

It's like, why'd you do, why'd you go Myers-Briggs?

Brit:

I like M B T I and it's really the gold standard as far as science

Brit:

backed personality typing, and it's really well known in corporate.

Brit:

I mean, if you had ever had a corporate job, you probably took

Brit:

a Myers Briggs type indicator.

Brit:

And it's also really popular in high school and college too.

Brit:

A lot of times students take that as well.

Brit:

And so, usually you've had some kind of exposure to Myers Briggs.

Brit:

Myers Briggs is a 16 type system.

Brit:

So what that means for me is when I make one thing, I make 16 things.

Brit:

It's.

Brit:

Bananas probably why I haven't really made anything new in a while, but

Brit:

but I haven't really needed to cause this, this stuff is still great.

Brit:

So 16 types and an an easier way to kind of, enter into the world is to break

Brit:

those 16 types into their four main tribes or categories like I like to call them.

Brit:

So there are the analyst tribe.

Brit:

The diplomat tribe, the Sentinel Tribe, and then the Explorer tribe.

Brit:

And so there are four types in each of those tribes.

Brit:

And, and those four types in those tribes have some really core

Brit:

similarities within their personalities.

Brit:

And that can kinda group you into a, into a crew of other people who are like, yeah,

Brit:

we're kinda like, we're really similar.

Brit:

And a lot of times when you're working with service-based businesses or

Brit:

coaches it's really fun to see how you very naturally attract people in your

Brit:

own tribe because you just naturally , appeal to those types of people.

Brit:

They get you a little bit more because you're so similar.

Brit:

You might not have the exact same type, but you, you may

Brit:

very well be in the same tribe.

Brit:

So that's, that's an easy way to kind of dip your toe in the water.

Brit:

And then we do go deep.

Brit:

I mean, we, I, I make everything a marketing personality

Brit:

is based on the 16 types.

Brit:

So if you know your type and you wanna go deep into what is my exact

Brit:

best marketing strategy, we go there.

Diane:

So what about the people who say like, look, I've done Myers Briggs

Diane:

and Oh, it doesn't feel like it fits.

Diane:

Or like I get a different one every

Diane:

single time.

Diane:

I find, because Myers Briggs is so like it's the four elements of it.

Diane:

The chance of like you being an E one time and an eye the next time,

Diane:

based on your mood, it feels like it's important that people get that type right

Diane:

before they then dive into their marketing personality.

Diane:

And build a whole marketing strategy

Diane:

on it.

Brit:

So there are a couple things that I, that I talk about when we, when I speak

Brit:

with someone who's like, eh, I dunno, for whatever reason, you know, they either

Brit:

feel between two different personality types and like, well, which one do I pick?

Brit:

You know, or I never really felt like that really fit me so, Number one is

Brit:

there are seven to 8 billion people on the planet and only 16 types.

Brit:

So this is not a perfect science.

Brit:

This is not something that, that I would say is at the end of the

Brit:

day, perfect, always going to fit.

Brit:

You take the assessment and it's like, oh my gosh, this is absolutely

Brit:

mean to a t from top to bottom.

Brit:

It's not, it, it's a tool.

Brit:

It's a, it can be a really useful tool.

Brit:

As long as you can answer the questions, really, and I mean brutally honest,

Brit:

you can answer those questions from the core of you not answering them in the

Brit:

way that you think you should answer them, but you're being honest with

Brit:

yourself and that you have to be pretty self-aware in, in order to do that.

Brit:

And so if you I kind of feel for the high schoolers who have to take

Brit:

these because it's like, I remember taking this when I was in high school.

Brit:

I didn't, I wasn't self-aware.

Brit:

I was answering it for my parents.

Brit:

Are you kidding me?

Brit:

My guidance counselor is gonna see this and I think I wanna go for journalism.

Brit:

So I better not answer this in like an analytical way,

Brit:

even though I'm good at math.

Brit:

Like, there's, even, even if you're not having conscious

Brit:

thought about that, it's happening.

Brit:

So you do.

Brit:

You do have to really sink into an honest place for yourself to be

Brit:

able to get an accurate indication of your personality type with this.

Brit:

And over time, as you said, like, can it change?

Brit:

Yeah.

Brit:

I, I think there's a, there's a lot of stuff out there.

Brit:

You know, people much more experienced in psychology than I am may have

Brit:

a different opinion, I think.

Brit:

Over time, you may see a change in your personality type.

Brit:

Maybe not because you at your core changed, but your awareness

Brit:

of yourself may have changed or your awareness of a past trauma.

Brit:

May have changed, you may have become aware of a past trauma, you may have

Brit:

cleared that, and now you feel like, man, I kind of feel like a different person.

Brit:

Like I can really truly be myself.

Brit:

Whereas five years ago I couldn't have answered this question honestly because

Brit:

I was still living in that trauma.

Brit:

I've seen that, I've had conversations about that.

Brit:

So does it change?

Brit:

I don't know.

Brit:

Dunno about that.

Brit:

But I do think your self-awareness changes and therefore your,

Brit:

your tight knee change.

Brit:

So, If you have hesitations, if you're like, I don't really know.

Brit:

I do encourage anyone who is even a little bit interested in finding out

Brit:

what their best marketing strategy is based on their personality type.

Brit:

Number one, take an assessment again.

Brit:

I have no affiliation with them.

I don't own that site, nothing.

Brit:

I just really, really like their assessment and it's free.

Brit:

And I really like the results that they give you too.

Brit:

It's just really fun to read through those.

Brit:

So, if you're at all interested, take the assessment again.

Brit:

Even if you took it just a year ago, take it again.

Brit:

Just, just do that.

Brit:

See what pops up.

Brit:

Read through your results and.

Brit:

And maybe make some notes around like, yeah, that definitely hits.

Brit:

And then maybe the next paragraph is like me.

Brit:

I can kind of see that, but there's also this thing going on, right?

Brit:

So that just helps your self-awareness as well.

Brit:

And at the end of the day, I say this all the time, your marketing

Brit:

needs to feel good for you.

Brit:

So the tool that I've created in marketing personalities hopefully

Brit:

gets you closer to finding out and confirming and trusting that, yeah,

Brit:

that is my best marketing strategy, because that really does feel good.

Brit:

I really do like doing that one thing in marketing.

Brit:

All the other stuff I don't really like, but that one thing I can get down

Brit:

with, I can put my best energy into.

Brit:

Regardless of what the tool says, regardless of what your personality

Brit:

type says, ask yourself, can I bring my best energy to this today?

Brit:

And if the answer is no, I can't.

Brit:

Then you get to make a choice of whether you force yourself to show up or you

Brit:

take a step back and say, Hmm, maybe I just don't put that out there today.

Brit:

Because at the core of what marketing Personalities stands for and teaches and

Brit:

preaches, and I've said it so many times over the years, is marketing that feel

Brit:

good, feels good, is marketing that works.

Brit:

Because when you bring that feel good energy, your audience, your best

Brit:

audience members, your best clients, your best customers, your best followers,

Brit:

they're like, oh, That feels right.

Brit:

I like that they kind of lean in, but when you show up feeling fake and salesy

Brit:

like you just should because this person that you're in this group with said

Brit:

like, oh, maybe you should try this.

Brit:

And you're like, oh, I don't, I don't really wanna do that, but I guess I will.

Brit:

Guess what your audience is gonna be like.

Brit:

Mm.

Brit:

They're gonna feel that they're not gonna trust it.

Brit:

And marketing 1 0 1.

Brit:

No, like trust.

Brit:

If they can't trust your message, if they can't trust your energy, they're not in.

Brit:

So you might as well show up with, with authentic and real energy.

Diane:

Okay, so, so let's connect all of

Diane:

this now.

Diane:

So we've got the four tribes.

Diane:

I am an E N T J or an I N T

Diane:

J.

Diane:

I ambivert with the best of

Brit:

yes.

Brit:

So do I.

Diane:

So am I the analyst

Brit:

Yes, you're in the analyst tribe, right?

Diane:

Okay.

Diane:

So what does that mean for me in terms of marketing?

Brit:

Okay, so let me break this down a little bit further.

Brit:

So, we've got I N T J and E N T J.

Brit:

I stands for introvert.

Brit:

E stands for extrovert.

Brit:

That's the one everybody knows.

Brit:

Right?

Brit:

And then let's talk about the N T J N stands for intuitive, meaning

Brit:

you prefer to pay attention to your internal cues rather than external cues.

Brit:

Okay.

Brit:

There's lots of stuff going on around you, but you would prefer to pay attention.

Brit:

Well, what's going on inside me?

Brit:

You're gonna, you're gonna wanna pull information from there.

Brit:

T stands for thinking.

Brit:

So thinking means you prefer to make decisions based on logic data, things you

Brit:

can, you can make sense of consciously.

Brit:

On the flip side of that is, is the letter F feeling.

Brit:

So people who are an i n fj, they, they prefer to make decisions

Brit:

based on how they're feeling.

Brit:

Okay, so you're, you're the T Logic data.

Brit:

Let's make sure we can make it make sense in a Google sheet, and

Brit:

that's gonna feel better for you.

Brit:

And then the J stands, yes, leva.

Brit:

And then J stands for judging.

Brit:

That doesn't mean judgemental, it means judging, meaning you prefer to

Brit:

see more of a black and white picture when you look out and have closure.

Brit:

You like to make decisions.

Brit:

You like to have.

Brit:

You would prefer, like, here's option A, here's option B.

Brit:

I can make a decision from there.

Brit:

You can make sense of a lot of options as well, but you, you

Brit:

would just so much rather like just make the decision, move on.

Brit:

You can judge the situation.

Brit:

Okay, we're moving on.

Brit:

Right.

Brit:

On the flip side of that is a P, which stands for Perceiving Perceivers.

Brit:

Really?

Brit:

They look out at the world and they see more gray.

Brit:

They like to have a menu of options.

Brit:

They like to sample here and sample there, and they don't prefer to make

Brit:

a hard and fast decision and feel like they can never look back on it.

Brit:

That makes them feel really uncomfortable, whereas the J is like, no, I like that.

Brit:

Like, let's just.

Brit:

Moving on now.

Brit:

And then, as you said, sometimes you dip into Ian, not dip, but like

Brit:

you kind of switch over to I N T J.

Brit:

So, and this happens for a lot, a lot of people.

Brit:

My hand is raised too, and so if you're thinking, yeah, I kind of

Brit:

feel like I'm between I and E or sometimes people feel like they're

Brit:

between any of the other letters.

Brit:

In that case, I always recommend blend them together no problem there.

Brit:

At the end of the day, let's just make it feel good cuz that's

Brit:

what, that's what works here.

Brit:

Okay, so E NT j's.

Brit:

They, no, they're shit, and they do not mind making sure everyone

Brit:

knows they know their shit.

Brit:

Okay, so, no, these are, I, I, I

Diane:

Wait, I take it back.

Diane:

Let's not do my

Brit:

Yeah, no, I joke only because I love this.

Brit:

I love, I love EMTs who they, they step into their power.

Brit:

They have no qualms about it.

Brit:

They're gonna teach you, they're gonna tell you how it works, and they're

Brit:

gonna make sure you do it right.

Brit:

That's, they know, they know how it works, right?

Brit:

And so I see E N T J as being really great at showing up behind a mic,

Brit:

whether on a podcast, on a stage.

Brit:

They have this presence about them that is really no bs.

Brit:

And, and that's really attractive to the right audience because when someone has a

Brit:

problem, I mean, we're in business, right?

Brit:

Like if you're listening to this, you're in business.

Brit:

So, When someone has a problem and they're really seeking a solution, it

Brit:

can, it can feel for the right person.

Brit:

So relieving to find someone like an E N T J who's just showing up and saying,

Brit:

this is what you need to do they've got the solutions to your problems.

Brit:

On the flip side, let's talk about I N T J.

Brit:

I N T J is.

Brit:

Is super logical, super analytical, and really, really good at

Brit:

setting up a digital sales funnel.

Brit:

So when you put, I really think this is like, this is kind of

Brit:

gold when you can put an I N T J and an E N T J in one person.

Brit:

You've got the external persona, who's got the answers, and the really

Brit:

great logical mind who can, take this big, big picture and this is, this

Brit:

is across the entire analyst tribe.

Brit:

They can see this huge, huge, big picture, like, okay, we're at point

Brit:

A and we need to get to point L.

Brit:

How do we bridge that gap?

Brit:

Most other personality types are gonna be like, I can kind of see

Brit:

like A to B, maybe B to C, but then after that I'm like, I don't know.

Brit:

I need help.

Brit:

The analyst, if you're in the analyst tribe, you could probably sit down and

Brit:

figure that out pretty quick because your, your mind is just strategic like that.

Diane:

Yeah, one of my friends said to me, my superpower is the

Diane:

ability to see seven steps ahead of

Diane:

where she is while still sitting in the weeds with her of where she

Diane:

is.

Diane:

It is that big picture.

Diane:

But I do chuckle, like as you're speaking, because I have definitely

Diane:

been known to say to people I'm less of a coach and more of a consultant

Diane:

because I would prefer to tell you the

Diane:

answer than wait for you to kind of get

Brit:

And that's so valid.

Diane:

And I'm also pretty direct about how direct

Diane:

I am.

Diane:

Like I don't pull punches on my podcast because I want people who listen to

Diane:

my podcast if they decide to work with me to understand what they're gonna

Diane:

get.

Diane:

And I am definitely not for everyone, and, and I'm okay with

Diane:

that.

Diane:

So my

Diane:

marketing strategy is to speak and to teach, which makes me very happy

Diane:

cuz that is very much my happy place.

Diane:

I do not wanna lip sync on a reel for all the money in the

Brit:

No, and I think that's a really, what you just said.

Brit:

I think it's a really powerful place and statement to say I'm more of

Brit:

a consultant and less of a coach.

Brit:

I, I can see how it would be really easy for someone in the analyst tribe,

Brit:

I think E NT JS and e NTPs to maybe get sucked into the coaching model because

Brit:

coaching is like this whole thing, right?

Brit:

Especially in our world.

Brit:

But if that's not how you present, that's not gonna feel right to you.

Brit:

And your clients are, if you present, if you say you're a coach, but you're

Brit:

showing up as who, who you genuinely are, which is a consultant, like I

Brit:

have the answers you need to follow.

Brit:

There's gonna be a disconnect between the people who are signing

Brit:

up and, and, and how you're.

Brit:

How, how you are consulting them.

Brit:

And I love that you've kind of, you've, you've hit on that.

Brit:

I'm more of a consultant.

Diane:

And so, okay, so that's, so our analysts are like our super

Diane:

logical, big picture down to small

Diane:

details types.

Diane:

Then we have sentinels, explorers and

Diane:

diplomats.

Diane:

What did they do high level for their

Brit:

sure.

Brit:

Yeah.

Brit:

So I'll start with the diplomat job.

Brit:

So the diplomats have the two letters, N and F.

Brit:

Similar.

Brit:

So a, again, N stands for intuitive preferring to pay attention to internal

Brit:

cues, and F stands for feeling preferring to make decisions based on how they

Brit:

feel rather than what they think.

Brit:

So with that in that diplomat tribe, these are intuitive feelers.

Brit:

They tend to appreciate big blocks of time because these are,

Brit:

these people are creative and.

Brit:

Don't prefer to be forced into production when it's just not flowing.

Brit:

They're seeking flow.

Brit:

They're seeking alignment.

Brit:

And these, I mean, I'll say, these people are co, these people are great coaches.

Brit:

They've just got that.

Brit:

Like sit back, let me ask some questions of you.

Brit:

I'm not gonna guide you to a specific answer.

Brit:

I'll let you do that yourself.

Brit:

I'm here to.

Brit:

You know, be a bit of a mentor, be a, you know, ask the right questions.

Brit:

So that's kind of the vibe of these people.

Brit:

Again, every single, all, all four of them in this tribe

Brit:

have different best strategies.

Brit:

But I will say a, a through line is being mission driven.

Brit:

So these people are gonna do, are gonna feel, feel the best when

Brit:

they have a really clear mission.

Brit:

Why are they showing up?

Brit:

If they have a marketing, if they have anything on their marketing strategy,

Brit:

marketing plan, marketing to-do list and a sauna or whatever, and they, they don't

Brit:

understand why it matters to do that.

Brit:

What's it really gonna do in the long run?

Brit:

They're not, they're not going to put their best energy into it because,

Brit:

and it, and it's usually so behind the scenes, they're not, they don't even

Brit:

realize that's what's got them stuck.

Brit:

I've coached, so I'm part of the diplomat tribe, so I've coached so

Brit:

many people in the diplomat tribe and.

Brit:

It's, I've had so many conversations where this is actually what has them stuck.

Brit:

They just don't know why they're doing it.

Brit:

Like, can't I just do this other thing?

Brit:

Like I can see how that's gonna work.

Brit:

So the mission is really key.

Brit:

They're really, they're usually pretty service oriented.

Brit:

So if they can, if ever they feel far from the service that they're

Brit:

actually gonna provide, where they're, they're offering products or

Brit:

services, it doesn't really matter.

Brit:

But if they feel far from their client or customer, Say in like making a digital

Brit:

sales funnel and like getting in the weeds of SamCart and Stripe and like that

Brit:

feels very far away from their client, that's not gonna feel good for them.

Brit:

Okay, so that's a zip diplomat tribe.

Brit:

I could talk so much more about them, but.

Diane:

So is their marketing, are they kind of marketing where like the

Diane:

analyst is marketing, Hey, let me help you break this down in a different way.

Diane:

Let me help you think about this differently.

Diane:

Let me show you a framework to deliver

Diane:

this.

Diane:

Because they are so consultative.

Diane:

More

Diane:

with the diplomats are more coaching.

Diane:

That's a much harder thing to.

Diane:

Like you can't coach someone through an Instagram post.

Diane:

Right?

Diane:

So are they kind of marketing their mission and talking about the mission

Diane:

and the way they serve that mission then tends to be in a more coaching

Diane:

rather than consultative space.

Brit:

It.

Brit:

It could be, it could be that way.

Brit:

It's, I can't say that it's that clean cut because there are

Brit:

people who are marketing products.

Brit:

You know, there are people out there marketing soap, and so an analyst.

Brit:

Who loves making soap, because that's actually a really

Brit:

interesting thing for analysts.

Brit:

This is, this is a weird example, but I swear it's like, it's like

Brit:

a science project for an analyst.

Diane:

I may have several Google tabs open on candle

Diane:

making at the moment, so you know.

Brit:

Point made it candle making is the same way.

Brit:

Because it's, it's, it's a science project for an analyst and then for a

Brit:

diplomat, it's more of like an artistic expression of how they're feeling today.

Brit:

And you're still making amazing candles.

Brit:

They're making amazing soap.

Brit:

So, and at the end of the day, those two people are marketing soap or candles.

Brit:

And so they're not necessarily, you can't, I can't really say

Brit:

like the analyst is gonna then be marketing like a framework, right?

Brit:

Because they're marketing a candle.

Brit:

But but the way they go about developing that strategy and what goes into it is

Brit:

gonna look, it's gonna look different.

Diane:

I can picture almost the two Instagram accounts of the one being

Diane:

like, here's how I made this candle.

Diane:

I'm the scenes of making this

Diane:

candle.

Diane:

Why use these 17 ingredients versus this is the experience of lighting a candle.

Brit:

that's a real, yeah, that's a good, yeah, that's a good through line.

Brit:

An analyst is naturally gonna show off a different perspective to their process.

Brit:

Could look exactly the same.

Brit:

steps and they're exactly the same.

Brit:

But those two people are gonna show off different perspectives

Brit:

of that whole process.

Diane:

Okay, so we have our animals and our diplomats, and

Diane:

now we have our Sentinels and

Diane:

Explorers.

Brit:

So the Sentinel Tribe they are, they have the similarities of the S and the J.

Brit:

So s stands for sensing, meaning they prefer to Pay attention to

Brit:

cues externally, what's going on in their surroundings rather

Brit:

than what's happening internally.

Brit:

And then the j we've talked about this, they prefer to

Brit:

make the decision and move on.

Brit:

Clear clap, black and white.

Brit:

So sentinels are really good team members.

Brit:

They teamwork makes the dream work for these people.

Brit:

So, If I could sum up across the board across for sentinels, sentinels are

Brit:

gonna work really well on a team or within a collaboration or within some

Brit:

kind of collaborative environment.

Brit:

If a sentinel is working completely on their own, they're 100%

Brit:

responsible for their marketing and.

Brit:

They have no, like referral partners or or affiliates or

Brit:

someone that feels like they're kind of in the marketing with them.

Brit:

They're gonna not feel great about that.

Brit:

And so I typically again, it gets individual between the four types, but

Brit:

referral networks are great for sentinels.

Brit:

Anything that you can be doing to.

Brit:

Build your referral network, incentivize referrals that that can feel and

Brit:

work really, really well for you.

Brit:

And then as we get more on the extroverted side of the Sentinel tribe these people

Brit:

are setting up affiliate programs.

Brit:

They're working with influencers if they have the cash for that,

Brit:

you know, that sort of thing.

Brit:

They're working with other people to help sell their thing.

Diane:

are they also the JV kind of webinar strategy types where they're

Diane:

showing up in other people's communities?

Diane:

If they're the extroverted side

Brit:

Oh, that could def, that could totally be, sentinels, especially on

Brit:

the extroverted side of the Sentinel tribe, they make friends so easily.

Brit:

So those opportunities seem to just kind of come to them like, Hey,

Brit:

would you come be on my podcast?

Brit:

Hey, would you come into my group?

Brit:

Especially this one, would you come into my group and do a training for my people?

Brit:

It's like they didn't even have to ask because they're just so friendly

Brit:

and they make friends with anyone.

Brit:

They're, they're around and they also have an air of, I still know what I'm doing.

Brit:

I'm not just here to make friends.

Brit:

You know?

Brit:

So they've got that nice alchemy of those two things.

Diane:

So their network is kind of their, their huge marketing

Diane:

asset.

Diane:

Okay.

Diane:

And then we have explorers left.

Brit:

Yes, explorers have the S and the P in common.

Brit:

S sensing prefer to pay attention to external cues.

Brit:

And then the p perceiving, again, they look out and they, they like

Brit:

to see gr like more of a gray.

Brit:

They don't really like to make a hard and fast decision.

Brit:

They like to sample and, and B, to me as a J I'm just like,

Brit:

oh no, I can't live like that.

Brit:

But they love it.

Brit:

They love it.

Brit:

They kinda

Brit:

thrive in chaos,

Brit:

I have lots of friends who are peas, and I totally get it.

Brit:

Like I see them and I see how good that feels for them.

Brit:

And then I'm here, like, you know, once they hit a road back, I'm

Brit:

like, you just need a routine.

Brit:

And they're like, no.

Diane:

like,

Brit:

So it's, you know, you just gotta know.

Brit:

You gotta know your, your audience, right?

Brit:

But no, I, I love people who operate in that perceiving place because you

Brit:

know what In my own mind, I think P, yes, it stands for perceiving,

Brit:

but it also stands for play.

Brit:

Perceivers can be so much more open to play, so much more open to opportunities

Brit:

that they didn't see coming, but they're, because they're open and

Brit:

they're not so, committed to closure.

Brit:

They're open to more things and then more things might come their way.

Brit:

So it can be a really beautiful thing.

Brit:

So explorers super creative super in the moment.

Brit:

These people are, these people are in the present moment.

Brit:

They are not planning far ahead.

Brit:

So I see these explorers being best at.

Brit:

It's not really being best at, it's more about feeling best when they

Brit:

are sharing something in the moment.

Brit:

These people love Instagram stories.

Brit:

or just making a TikTok off just off the cuff or didn't mean didn't really plan

Brit:

to write this email to their list, but they're, they've got something on their

Brit:

mind in they love sending those emails and they typically get really good responses

Brit:

regardless of how many typos are in it.

Brit:

Because it came, it just came from the heart.

Brit:

It just so these people, if, if you're in the Explorer tribe right now and

Brit:

you are trying to fit yourself into the the box of having a content calendar

Brit:

planned out for the next quarter doing all of your social media posts on Monday,

Brit:

so they're planned out for the rest of the week, that doesn't feel good.

Brit:

It's totally overwhelming.

Brit:

That's not where they live.

Brit:

That's not their, their mind is not in the future like yours.

Brit:

And I like you and I, we live in the future, right?

Brit:

With who we are.

Brit:

And we think like, of course you need a content calendar.

Brit:

Of course you need to plan ahead.

Brit:

How do you know what's gonna happen if you're not?

Brit:

And they're like, but I don't get, it feels completely irrelevant.

Brit:

And ultimately, If that content calendar is being kind of forced

Brit:

upon them or, or feels like a big should, it can feel so overwhelming.

Brit:

So I like to give explorers the, the advice to, Hey, what's going on today?

Brit:

You wanna share about it?

Brit:

Would it feel good to share about that today?

Brit:

Great.

Brit:

Go do that.

Diane:

I've definitely been in like social media settings, like

Diane:

groups and programs and stuff with

Diane:

explorer types.

Diane:

As soon as anyone talks about a content planner, they're like, but

Diane:

how will I know what I wanna say

Diane:

tomorrow?

Diane:

And I'm like, how can you go to sleep tonight?

Diane:

Not

Diane:

knowing what you're gonna say tomorrow.

Brit:

Well, right, right.

Brit:

And this is that so gets to the crux of all of this, you know, we

Brit:

all are gonna do this differently and every way we do it is so valid.

Brit:

There are, you know, there are so many marketing gurus out there.

Brit:

Who mean really well and have amazing strategies, like amazing

Brit:

ways to find success in in business.

Brit:

Unfortunately, it's often presented as like, as long as you

Brit:

do this, you're gonna succeed.

Brit:

And the reality is, as long as you are that type of person and you do this,

Brit:

Then, yeah, you probably will succeed, but if you're not that type of person,

Brit:

it's not gonna be that clean cut.

Brit:

And it's great when you can find somebody who, who you really feel operates exactly

Brit:

like you do, because yeah, you can kind of plug and play, but if, if you, if

Brit:

that's not how you are naturally wired and you're trying to follow their system.

Brit:

I mean, you can make it work, but it's not, it's not gonna be as easy.

Brit:

And unfortunately, I see a lot of people kind of go down that

Brit:

path and then, and then end up feeling like they are the problem.

Brit:

And it's not that you're the problem.

Brit:

You never were the problem.

Brit:

And the marketing guru isn't the problem either.

Brit:

It's just the fact that we have to remember the energetics

Brit:

of what's happening here.

Brit:

And the energetics are very clear when you show up.

Brit:

Feeling good.

Brit:

Your audience leans in.

Brit:

They want more of that feel good, authentic energy.

Brit:

When you feel, when you show up feeling fake and salesy, they pick up on that

Brit:

too, and they don't want any of it.

Brit:

So regardless of what the strategy is, you have to approach it and

Brit:

say, does that feel good to me?

Brit:

And your answer might change over time.

Brit:

I'm a diplomat and as an intuitive feeler that my answer to those

Brit:

questions changes all the time.

Brit:

And it can be really.

Brit:

I can feel really frustrated by that.

Brit:

I have a lot of diplomat friends too, and that can feel really frustrating.

Brit:

I have one who's just like so bought in and they're like, I'm

Brit:

just gonna do whatever feels good and, and it works for her so well.

Brit:

And it's like, oh man, I, I wish I could let go that much.

Brit:

I'm, I'm working at it.

Brit:

There are so many ways to do this.

Brit:

The real trick is, Seeking finding and then trusting that which feels good for

Brit:

you long enough to let it actually work.

Diane:

That's the trick, right?

Brit:

That's The

Brit:

trick.

Diane:

So if there was only one thing.

Diane:

That you could tell every entrepreneur or business owner about marketing,

Brit:

Hmm.

Diane:

what would the one thing be?

Brit:

Marketing that feels good is marketing That works.

Brit:

Period.

Brit:

That's at the core of everything.

Diane:

And I will say as well, like that has been at the core

Diane:

of everything for you four years.

Brit:

Years, yeah.

Brit:

That is the hill I will die on.

Brit:

Yes.

Diane:

Right.

Diane:

So just trust.

Diane:

If it feels good, it will work.

Diane:

we've talked a lot about like your website and stuff.

First of all, what is your number one lifestyle boundary for your business?

So many, I'm having trouble like deciding which wood am I

Brit:

gonna go with again, that J right?

Brit:

I'm, I'm an E N F J, so it's like I have lots of boundaries.

Brit:

I'm really good at boundaries too.

Diane:

Let me just do a ProCon list.

Diane:

Let me stack rank them quickly.

Diane:

Let me do a comparison just to make sure it's all correct.

Brit:

Well see, I'm a feeler though, so I don't, I don't usually go with the

Brit:

ProCon or like mapping anything out.

Brit:

I just like, If I can, if I can calm myself enough and get grounded, I

Brit:

know exactly what the answer is.

Brit:

But the getting calm and the grounding thing again, I have a kid.

Brit:

It's, it's not always that easy, but okay.

Brit:

Boundary.

Brit:

Well, huh, let's see.

Brit:

I, you know what this is, this is the one that's coming up.

Brit:

The most, I only work with people I really like.

Brit:

if I'm on a consultation call and it's a like a really, I've had so

Brit:

many of these like exciting projects, I could see myself really enjoying

Brit:

the project, but I don't like the pe.

Brit:

This sounds awful, but whatever.

Brit:

This is how I feel if I don't really care for the people that I'm conversing

Brit:

with and that I'm, that are gonna be my point people on the project with

Brit:

the company that's trying to hire me.

Brit:

It'll fall through it.

Brit:

Usually, it's funny because I think my energy will then push them away, but there

Brit:

have been, there have been times when I'm just like, this isn't, this isn't right.

Brit:

I'm just not good money, good project, but I don't, I don't wanna work with you guys.

Brit:

I, of course, I don't say it that way, but that's a huge boundary and I think

Brit:

I've been able to, well, I know, I know.

Brit:

That has made my business a lot stronger because now.

Brit:

I'm able to continue to boundary off my time for marketing personalities

Brit:

and keep that at the core.

Brit:

And, when you start anything new, you've gotta give it time.

Brit:

It's not always, it's not gonna make you money right away, like unless

Brit:

you're just offering a service.

Brit:

Okay?

Brit:

Services are different, but when you're offering a product, a digital product, and

Brit:

a website that has to like, kind of do its own thing, That doesn't necessarily make

Brit:

you money right out the gate, so you have to give it time and why you're giving it

Brit:

time, you gotta make money somewhere else.

Brit:

And my, that boundary of only w working with people I like, I think has saved

Brit:

me so much heartache, so many headaches, trying to balance like, I hate these

Brit:

clients, but they're paying me and I'm trying to keep this website up.

Brit:

That's not my life.

Brit:

I can keep up the website and I can keep up marketing personalities, and I

Brit:

can work with really fantastic clients that I, I just love doing work for them.

Diane:

Yeah, I think we often forget in that moment where, There's a lot

Diane:

of money being waived in front of us

Diane:

because we're a human and we can see that that would be really helpful or,

Diane:

or, you know, really fun to spend.

Diane:

We forget about the energetic drain of that pain in the ass

Brit:

Mm-hmm.

Brit:

And I've only learned this boundary because I didn't do

Brit:

it right in the beginning.

Brit:

Right.

Brit:

So,

Diane:

yeah, I feel like this is one that everybody has to learn.

Brit:

absolutely.

Diane:

Like by experience.

Diane:

Yeah, good boundary to set.

Diane:

Okay, so finally, what is the worst piece of cookie cutter advice you

Diane:

have been given as an entrepreneur?

Brit:

Hmm.

Brit:

How do I choose?

Brit:

The thing that.

Brit:

Makes me itch the most is when I, when I see a podcast episode or an email or

Brit:

an Instagram post that's written from a place of guys, it's not that hard.

Brit:

Like, just do this thing and it'll work for you.

Brit:

, it brings up rage for me because I, I, obviously, it's an opposition of

Brit:

what I'm trying to do in the world, so I recognize my own ego there.

Brit:

But even if it's like, great, great advice for me as an E N F J, but I know.

Brit:

And E S F P is seeing it and probably feeling overwhelmed.

Brit:

That just makes then me feel like, oh, like take this shit down.

Brit:

I don't, it's, it's not that clear cut.

Brit:

And, and the way in which you're saying it makes it seem like, oh,

Brit:

if, I mean, if you could just do it.

Brit:

If you just do this, it's gonna be easy.

Brit:

And then the person who just does the, just does the quote unquote

Brit:

dress does that and it doesn't work, then they feel like crap.

Brit:

And I've worked with so many people in that place of feeling like

Brit:

crap because they just like, how have they not figured it out yet?

Brit:

and they're kind of shaming themselves in those shoulds and

Brit:

it's, that's a crappy place to be.

Brit:

So I think that kind of stuff, I think it's really more how it's

Brit:

said than what's said that I wish we could just erase off the internet.

Diane:

Yeah, I had a, a friend posted something yesterday or the

Diane:

day before if she listened to this.

Diane:

She's, I'm gonna get an earful.

Diane:

But one of the things was like, you have to be going live.

Diane:

And I chuckled to myself because she's absolutely brilliant

Diane:

at turning on the camera

Diane:

and just talking and like, Wisdom spouting out.

Diane:

Whereas for me, I'm like, okay, what am I gonna say?

Diane:

What topic am I gonna cover?

Diane:

What am I, like, what's the point of me doing this?

Diane:

Like where am I?

Diane:

So it takes,

Brit:

And both of you are totally right.

Diane:

Right.

Diane:

And, but it's funny cuz you read that and for me, I know.

Diane:

Okay, yes, that's a, I agree with her going live as a great

Diane:

strategy.

Diane:

But I know myself enough to know if I want that to be a strategy, I need to

Diane:

write out 30 topics that I'm gonna do.

Diane:

I need to, you know, before I launched my

Diane:

podcast, I had a list of 50 to a hundred guests

Brit:

Mm-hmm.

Diane:

that I knew I could

Diane:

invite.

Diane:

And 50 ish topics that I could talk about in my

Diane:

solo episodes before I even turned on a microphone, before I even asked

Diane:

Apple for anything.

Diane:

And so for me, I know that about myself, but I do think that must be really hard.

Diane:

As a baby business person, or even somebody who's just always, I

Diane:

guess been told what to do in their business by the gurus to go, hang on a

Diane:

second, maybe that won't work for me.

Diane:

And then going live and being like, oh, I dunno what I'm talking about.

Diane:

And, and they even said like, don't worry about a script.

Diane:

Just turn, just start talking and the right thing will come out.

Diane:

And I was like, oh, I don't know if you want me to do that.

Diane:

That's gonna be a whole different kind of life.

Brit:

Yeah.

Brit:

And you know, it's a, that's such a great example because it's not that you're

Brit:

held up on being on camera, whereas a lot of personality types read that and

Brit:

was like, I, no, I, it's not even that.

Brit:

I don't need a scripter.

Brit:

Like I just don't wanna be on camera.

Brit:

Whatcha are you talking about?

Brit:

Right.

Brit:

And then they're already clammed up.

Brit:

But in your case, it wasn't about the video being on, it's, it's

Brit:

about how prepared you were.

Brit:

So it's, that's such a keen self-awareness, which is, that's the kind

Brit:

of stuff we need to be asking ourselves.

Diane:

I think for me it's less about having a script to know like exactly.

Diane:

Like what I'm gonna say, it's more having like a script or some bullet

Diane:

points, because otherwise I will talk to you for 45 minutes about the

Diane:

latest thing that I'm nerding out

Diane:

on.

Diane:

And I'll go into so much complexity that somebody who's just met it

Diane:

for the first time, you know, so I wanna make sure I've taken, here's

Diane:

the concept I'm talking about.

Diane:

Here's what I want someone to take away from it.

Diane:

And I want it to just be one thing that I'm talking

Diane:

about.

Diane:

Because otherwise, you know, three hours later I'm still talking

Brit:

right.

Brit:

And you know what, and that, and it's funny cuz there's, there

Brit:

might be some people who are like, well, I get on live and I just talk

Brit:

about whatever, and I'm talking for an hour and it's like, whatever.

Brit:

And.

Brit:

And that might actually work for them because they don't have that internal

Brit:

thing saying like, no, I don't want, that's not what I wanna put out there.

Brit:

They don't have that internal block that's like, I don't wanna put that out there.

Brit:

They're just like, whatever.

Brit:

Like I put it out there, it's fine.

Brit:

And because they don't have a block about it, it works for them

Diane:

They show up differently doing

Brit:

you are honest about like, that's not what I wanna put out.

Brit:

So if that's not what you wanna put out, but then you put

Brit:

it out, it's not gonna work.

Diane:

Yeah, and I think that's the power of a knowing yourself

Brit:

Mm-hmm.

Diane:

Like whether you've done M B T I or disk

Diane:

or Wealth dynamics or Enneagram or like, I almost don't care.

Diane:

Like just go do something that gets you more in touch with

Diane:

yourself and then it's, it is, like you said, from the marketing perspective,

Diane:

but at that bigger perspective, committing to yourself in that space.

Brit:

Yep.

Brit:

And there's gonna be a lot of distractions.

Brit:

If you're in a mastermind group, if you're in a coaching program, if you're here,

Brit:

there, you're on a, if you're on a Zoom call with a bunch of people and you're

Brit:

talking about, you know, what's going on in your business and somebody's going

Brit:

to shout out like, oh, well I tried this thing, maybe, maybe you could try this.

Brit:

You gotta take that step back cuz otherwise you're just gonna

Brit:

get inundated with so many ideas.

Brit:

They sound okay on the surface, but in, in actuality, when you actually put them

Brit:

into practice, you feel crappy about it.

Brit:

You feel yourself procrastinating.

Brit:

You keep bumping it the next day, the next day, the next day on your Asana thing,

Brit:

and it's been there for like 14 weeks and you're like, I still haven't done that.

Brit:

Well, there's probably a reason

Brit:

for that.

Diane:

Gosh, I can't relate to that at all.

Brit:

We all do it.

Diane:

Yeah.

Brit:

your sign.

Brit:

Let's just take that off of, and this is what I say, either

Brit:

eliminate it or delegate it.

Diane:

Oh, this has been so much fun.

Diane:
