Speaker:
00:00:00
Well, I admit it.
Speaker:
00:00:02
I was wrong.
Speaker:
00:00:03
It's happened before.
Speaker:
00:00:04
It's, it's, it's going to happen again, guaranteed.
Speaker:
00:00:08
But I was wrong about something really important.
Speaker:
00:00:10
And I want to share that with you today on this episode, because what I was wrong about was employee engagement.
Speaker:
00:00:17
Yeah, I had this messed up a few years ago.
Speaker:
00:00:20
And that's what I want to talk with you about on this short form of the, uh, confidence covered by humility podcast.
Speaker:
00:00:26
Hey everybody.
Speaker:
00:00:27
Welcome back to confidence covered by humility.
Speaker:
00:00:29
My name is James Mayhew and I'm the host of the podcast.
Speaker:
00:00:32
And this is the podcast that we talk about what it means to lead our business, our team, or even inside
Speaker:
00:00:39
of our home with humble confidence and being wrong.
Speaker:
00:00:44
And admitting you're wrong is.
Speaker:
00:00:46
I think a real life example of confidence that's covered by humility.
Speaker:
00:00:50
I'm telling you, I screwed this up.
Speaker:
00:00:52
And the reason I want you to know this is because some of you are screwing it up in the same way.
Speaker:
00:00:57
You don't mean to, your intentions aren't bad.
Speaker:
00:01:00
You make the same mistake that I am currently, or that I had made.
Speaker:
00:01:04
And I'm currently now have fixed over the last several years.
Speaker:
00:01:08
But.
Speaker:
00:01:09
What was happening, um, that, that I was getting employee engagement wrong was I was equating that to how much you
Speaker:
00:01:15
loved your job and that is a really unfair expectation.
Speaker:
00:01:19
And so what was happening is when I was at a company where, where that was my role to, to do this, uh, every
Speaker:
00:01:26
meeting that I was going into and every, every, whether it was a group meeting or it was a one on one with a manager
Speaker:
00:01:31
or, you know, somebody in, in a leadership role, we were talking about, um, You know, how they felt about the
Speaker:
00:01:38
company and you know, what a great place this is to be.
Speaker:
00:01:41
And, and, and we want you to love it.
Speaker:
00:01:43
We need you to love it and all those things.
Speaker:
00:01:44
And I might be laying it on a little thick there.
Speaker:
00:01:47
I don't know if it was quite that bad, but looking back, you know, 10 years ago, that's kind of what it felt like.
Speaker:
00:01:52
Here's the thing.
Speaker:
00:01:54
If you have a company filled with people who love their job, that's a great outcome.
Speaker:
00:01:58
That's awesome.
Speaker:
00:02:00
But if you set that as your goal, you are going to fail and you're going to cause people to be miserable as a result.
Speaker:
00:02:07
You can, however, have a company filled with people who are engaged in the work around the
Speaker:
00:02:12
things that are tangible and measurable and see love isn't tangible and measurable in this case.
Speaker:
00:02:19
This is where I come back to say engaged employees.
Speaker:
00:02:22
They know three things.
Speaker:
00:02:24
They know what's expected of them.
Speaker:
00:02:26
They know what to work on first, second and third, and they know how they're doing.
Speaker:
00:02:31
They know what they are doing well and where they can continue to grow.
Speaker:
00:02:34
And that's it.
Speaker:
00:02:35
Well, if you do all those three things, well, does that ensure you're going to have a hundred percent engagement
Speaker:
00:02:41
across your, your company with through all your employees?
Speaker:
00:02:44
Well, the answer to that is a definite no.
Speaker:
00:02:45
It's a hard no.
Speaker:
00:02:47
However, it does create a culture of excellence around execution and around leadership and management.
Speaker:
00:02:54
And when you do.
Speaker:
00:02:56
With that, well, when that's done, well, you create an environment where people can thrive if they so
Speaker:
00:03:02
choose to, when that happens, when you create that environment for people to thrive, here's what you hear.
Speaker:
00:03:08
You hear things like, I love my job.
Speaker:
00:03:11
This is a great company.
Speaker:
00:03:13
What I do matters.
Speaker:
00:03:14
This is a great place to work.
Speaker:
00:03:15
Those are the things that you hear.
Speaker:
00:03:17
See, I was wrong about employee engagement because I was missing those three vitally important aspects of leadership
Speaker:
00:03:26
and getting your, your team members engaged in the work.
Speaker:
00:03:31
Don't make the same mistake that I made.
Speaker:
00:03:33
I want you to know employee engagement.
Speaker:
00:03:35
It is not rocket science, but it's also not for the faint of heart.
Speaker:
00:03:39
It does take commitment and it does take consistent effort.
Speaker:
00:03:42
It also takes a system that ensures that the right conversations are happening on a consistent basis.
Speaker:
00:03:47
And that's what I get to help founders and business owners and executives do.
Speaker:
00:03:52
Now we achieve that through what I call my purpose driven teams framework.
Speaker:
00:03:57
Now, just, I'm going to end the podcast with just a little call to action here.
Speaker:
00:04:00
If you want to know if that can help your company, uh, can it help you get unstuck or capitalize on some low
Speaker:
00:04:06
hanging fruit that just feels like it's just out of reach?
Speaker:
00:04:08
Well, how about we have a conversation today?
Speaker:
00:04:12
My name is James Mayhew.
Speaker:
00:04:14

Speaker:
00:04:19

Speaker:
00:04:21
