A Long Summary

Crashing (UK, 2016) is what Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote before Fleabag — a six-part comedy about six twenty-somethings living as property guardians in a disused London hospital, paying cheap rent in exchange for keeping the building safe, and inevitably making a mess of their personal lives in close quarters. It stars Waller-Bridge as Lulu and Jonathan Bailey as Sam, and it is, by any measure, a great show that deserves more attention than it gets.

We chose to spend an entire episode on one scene. A silent one. Less than sixty seconds. We are aware of how that sounds for a podcast, and we made a sketch about it.

The scene demonstrates perfect heightening — the storytelling technique of escalating tension, stakes, or absurdity in precise, deliberate steps until the audience feels the full weight of what's happening without a word being spoken. We watched it, described it verbally (the only option), tried to guess what it was about going in blind, and then broke down exactly how Waller-Bridge constructs the escalation. By the end we had traced the scene back through the characters' histories and argued it contains everything you need to know about the whole series.

WHAT THEY DID NEXT

Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote and starred in Fleabag later that same year — which went on to win eight Emmy Awards and four BAFTAs, and is widely considered one of the best television series ever made. Jonathan Bailey has since become a major star, best known for playing Anthony Bridgerton in Bridgerton and for his stage and screen work including Fellow Travelers and the Wicked film adaptation.
