Speaker:

As I sit here late at night.

2

:

I'm wondering if maybe you didn't

need the episode we were creating.

3

:

About a beautiful, yet

unique Christmas tree.

4

:

And wrapping your packages . And

perfectly coordinated papers.

5

:

As humble and helpful and

practical as we tried to be.

6

:

Maybe you needed something else first.

7

:

You see, I had a plan.

8

:

We recorded a lengthy Christmas episode

9

:

and we were going to release it in three.

10

:

To four different parts.

11

:

Throughout the month of December.

12

:

And then just a few days before Christmas.

13

:

I was going to share with you.

14

:

A very vulnerable devotion.

15

:

The Lord has put on my heart.

16

:

I shared part of it a couple of years

ago in a blog post friend, trusted.

17

:

And the Lord continues to build upon.

18

:

This painful but much needed lesson.

19

:

Christmas.

20

:

Doesn't always look like we plan.

21

:

like, we hope.

22

:

But in all of it.

23

:

Jesus is.

24

:

Emmanuelle.

25

:

And I'm happy to share that story.

26

:

But to be honest, I didn't

think it would be tonight.

27

:

You see, I've worked hard

for much of today on editing.

28

:

Our episodes.

29

:

I've spent much time, voice

leveling and making sure we're

30

:

not talking over each other.

31

:

And polishing and right before I

went to press the publish button.

32

:

my edits disappeared.

33

:

This has happened before and I've

worked into the wee hours of the night.

34

:

More than I'd care To make

sure that we stay on schedule.

35

:

So tonight, as I asked

the Lord what to do.

36

:

I felt he was laying it on my heart.

37

:

To remind us where our focus

should be this Christmas season.

38

:

Before I share this story I just

want to acknowledge that my husband

39

:

is not also sitting behind the

microphone, sharing his story.

40

:

As I said, it's very late right now.

41

:

And he's asleep.

42

:

But he did give permission for this

story to be shared and it has been

43

:

forgiven so I ask that you give him

grace while I share my perspective.

44

:

When I listened to the

Trans-Siberian orchestra is famous.

45

:

Christmas Eve, Siri, Ava.

46

:

I had to look up the name,

but it's the one on the radio

47

:

all the time around Christmas,

48

:

you know which one I'm talking about.

49

:

I have this image emblazoned in my mind.

50

:

I picture a heavenly football

stadium filled with angelic hosts.

51

:

The angels are bursting

with powerful praises.

52

:

In the center stands the

Trinity and all their glory.

53

:

They are facing each other, knowing it

is the last time they will be together.

54

:

For quite some time.

55

:

The countdown is on the music is

pounding, filling the stadium in

56

:

anticipation of the redemption of mankind.

57

:

The Lord Jesus is preparing

to leave his heavenly home.

58

:

To do what has been promised

thousands of years before.

59

:

The enemy doesn't understand what

is about to occur, but God is about

60

:

to fulfill his promise to humanity.

61

:

My heartbeat to my chest, as I imagine it.

62

:

Oh, how I long to get to heaven and find

out what that moment really look like.

63

:

It humbles and thrills me all at once.

64

:

The anticipation of good conquering

evil in the most unexpected way.

65

:

It is truly the most miraculous story.

66

:

FOr me, this reality is more exciting than

any Christmas morning gift has ever been.

67

:

I've always been that way.

68

:

Even as a little girl, the candle

at Christmas Eve service was

69

:

the time I launched foremost.

70

:

To venture out into the bitter

cold, looking up at the stars.

71

:

Imagining my sweet savior

coming into the world.

72

:

And worshiping with my

family has been a moment.

73

:

I treasured.

74

:

I wanted to be like Mary.

75

:

A simple faithfully young woman.

76

:

Oh, God looked down at and was pleased.

77

:

To step out in faith,

regardless of the consequences.

78

:

To serve God.

79

:

It's a beautiful example.

80

:

Yet often.

81

:

And frequently around the holidays.

82

:

I find my diet itself attitude.

83

:

Gets challenged.

84

:

Let me take you back to my

first Christmas being married.

85

:

Travis.

86

:

And I got married in March of 2009.

87

:

We lived right in the

middle of our parents.

88

:

Mine were three and a half hours north and

his we're three and a half hours south.

89

:

Because my mother-in-law's birthday

is right around Thanksgiving.

90

:

We decided to go south to

my in-laws for that holiday.

91

:

And then at Christmas, the plan

was to go to my house on Christmas

92

:

Eve and Christmas morning.

93

:

Then to drive seven hours south

to make it to my in-laws for

94

:

Christmas dinner and presence.

95

:

The plan seemed like a reasonable one.

96

:

As we both knew we would be at

my in-laws the next Christmas.

97

:

So there we were celebrating

at my parents' house.

98

:

Having just gotten home

from Christmas Eve church.

99

:

When Travis heard that a big

snow storm was on its way.

100

:

He started nervously looking into the

weather report and discovered that a storm

101

:

was possibly coming on Christmas day.

102

:

To my horror and to the

confusion and shock of my family.

103

:

Travis declared that we had to leave.

104

:

He didn't want the snowstorm to impact

a center, a long drive the next day.

105

:

Now I know a large part of my

new husband was concerned about

106

:

putting his bride in danger.

107

:

But I didn't feel protected at all.

108

:

I privately pleaded with him

to just let us stay longer.

109

:

Waited out a little, please, please.

110

:

Travis.

111

:

Can't we just stay here.

112

:

I knew we would be safest right.

113

:

Where we were.

114

:

And my tears did nothing.

115

:

To convince him.

116

:

I can still remember hugging my parents.

117

:

Goodbye.

118

:

As I struggled to submit to my husband.

119

:

The drive was a long, hard one.

120

:

I don't remember much, but

I do remember my deep sobs.

121

:

I could not believe that he

wouldn't listen to me at all.

122

:

I felt like I had made a horrible

mistake, marrying someone who

123

:

could overlook my heart so easily.

124

:

And as luck would have it.

125

:

The blizzard never came.

126

:

And then somehow my husband, who usually

struggles to stay awake while driving.

127

:

Had a burst of energy that allowed

him to drive through the night.

128

:

And we arrived at his parents'

house early Christmas morning.

129

:

We had a nice Christmas with.

130

:

His family.

131

:

They are wonderful and amazingly generous.

132

:

And I loved them, but it

was not what I was used to.

133

:

And my heart ached.

134

:

My bitterness lasted much

more than that morning.

135

:

And sadly adding salt to my wounds.

136

:

That turned out to be my

father's last Christmas.

137

:

We have to continually surrender.

138

:

The many instances.

139

:

Where our hopes do not become our reality.

140

:

But what matters so much more than my

story, or then my husband's experience.

141

:

Of this moment.

142

:

Is Christ's example.

143

:

And the hymn hark the Herald angels sing.

144

:

The verse that's been standing out to me.

145

:

This Christmas season is mild TLA.

146

:

His glory by.

147

:

Jesus.

148

:

So willingly gave up

heaven to come to earth.

149

:

Not for a quick rescue.

150

:

But for 33 years of living on this

earth, he subjected himself to earthly

151

:

authorities to constant misunderstanding.

152

:

Discomfort and suffering.

153

:

Pain and rejection.

154

:

And when I feel I might be justified

to feel moments of bitterness.

155

:

My Savior reminds me to mildly.

156

:

Lay it down.

157

:

That his glory is what matters.

158

:

We don't need to fight for ourselves.

159

:

We don't need to exhaust ourselves.

160

:

To have a Pinterest where the Christmas.

161

:

What we really need is

Emmanuelle God with us.

162

:

Looking back.

163

:

don't know if I took my tears to the Lord.

164

:

I know, I pled to him to

break through to my husband.

165

:

But I don't know if I

entered in with my savior.

166

:

I don't know if I let him be God with me.

167

:

There are so many difficult situations

you could be experiencing this Christmas.

168

:

It might be your first

holiday without a loved one.

169

:

It might be your 20th holiday

without that loved one, but the

170

:

pain and the grief is still there.

171

:

You might be fearfully anticipating

visiting in-laws that don't approve of

172

:

you or perhaps they treat you unkindly.

173

:

You might be bracing for the way they're

going to critique you and your parenting.

174

:

And of course you already

know your shortcomings.

175

:

And you just wish you

could spend Christmas.

176

:

More peacefully somewhere else.

177

:

might have a special needs child.

178

:

And you're anticipating all of

the sensory issues and meltdowns

179

:

that are going to come up.

180

:

And are triggered by the lights

and the sounds and all of the

181

:

stimulation that Christmas can bring.

182

:

Your child might be in a wheelchair

and you're faced with the

183

:

reality that you're very limited.

184

:

Where you can celebrate.

185

:

And you just wish you had more freedom.

186

:

You or someone you love may have

recently been given a health diagnosis.

187

:

That's threatening to suck all of

the joy from the Christmas season.

188

:

You're trying to embrace the joy

of the holidays while wondering

189

:

if it will be your last.

190

:

You could be struggling financially.

191

:

There may be job loss in your home.

192

:

And you're wondering how you're

going to give your kids the

193

:

Christmas you want them to have.

194

:

You're stressing out as you analyze

what to buy them, and yet you don't

195

:

want to pass on that fear to them.

196

:

So you're putting on a happy face.

197

:

Praying that the Lord would provide.

198

:

Maybe you have a baby or a

toddler that still doesn't sleep.

199

:

And the thought of decorating our tree.

200

:

Or having a devotional is so exhausting.

201

:

You just want to rest for a moment.

202

:

Perhaps you're struggling

with infertility.

203

:

And, you know, you're supposed to

rejoice every time you hear the

204

:

words for, onto you, a child is born.

205

:

Onto you, a son is given.

206

:

But if you're honest, Your hardest

breaking because you just want

207

:

to see a positive pregnancy test.

208

:

Or maybe you've had the joy of

bringing children into this world.

209

:

And now they're grown and one

of them isn't following Christ.

210

:

You did your best.

211

:

You truly try to point them to the Lord.

212

:

But they've chosen their own way.

213

:

Or maybe you're looking

back full of regret.

214

:

And pleading on your knees.

215

:

For them to be a prodigal.

216

:

While it may seem like the

right attitude of Christmas.

217

:

Is to enter with all

smiles and giggles and fun.

218

:

It's okay.

219

:

If you enter in with a

manual while grieving.

220

:

While aching for a different reality.

221

:

It's okay.

222

:

If you stop the rapping presence.

223

:

cookie making and trimming the tree.

224

:

To be honest at the Lord.

225

:

Uh, savior.

226

:

Who surrendered so much.

227

:

Understands.

228

:

A savior who had brothers that didn't

even believe he was the Messiah, surely

229

:

can understand pain and Nur family.

230

:

can also look at Mary's example.

231

:

though we know how she has

been honored in history.

232

:

Let's not brush past the

shame that she surely endured.

233

:

When I think about her example, I

wonder why I felt so entitled to

234

:

be with my own family on Christmas.

235

:

My earliest longings of being

like Mary and following God,

236

:

wherever he would have me.

237

:

How did I forget so quickly?

238

:

That Mary wasn't with her

family on Christmas either.

239

:

Perhaps she was still learning.

240

:

She could trust Joseph with her heart.

241

:

We know, she certainly couldn't have

been comfortable with her surroundings.

242

:

And she definitely wasn't cozy on her.

243

:

Gen-Z pretation.

244

:

She was shunned by men and

almost completely alone.

245

:

And then God did the

most beautiful miracle.

246

:

The star shown.

247

:

The shepherds came the wise men worshiped.

248

:

Scripture doesn't tell us all of

the difficult moments Mary endured.

249

:

we can focus on the

holiness of that night.

250

:

That all of eternity was

changed in that moment.

251

:

And the stillness of the stable.

252

:

Emmanuel.

253

:

Came to her.

254

:

God was with her.

255

:

And that's all that mattered.

256

:

It's all that matters for

us to, and every trial.

257

:

And every joy he is there.

258

:

He is with us.

259

:

Oh, Lord Jesus.

260

:

Help us to take our eyes off of ourselves.

261

:

And focus on you.

262

:

Please give us families that glorify you.

263

:

And help us to persevere and hope.

264

:

Knowing that you are a faithful God,

that's drawing all men on to himself.

265

:

We thank you that you are

Jehovah, Gyra God, our provider.

266

:

We thank you that you are Jehovah, Rapha.

267

:

God, our healer.

268

:

You are the God who sees

269

:

we thank you that our identity is

found in you and the regardless

270

:

of how others may feel about us.

271

:

We are accepted by you.

272

:

Lord we ask that your joy

would be our strength.

273

:

That even in the midst

of painful circumstances.

274

:

That you would help us

to choose gratitude.

275

:

And see the blessings before us.

276

:

May we choose deep satisfaction in you.

277

:

Maybe we choose with Mary to

treasure and ponder your blessing.

278

:

Slurred.

279

:

Instead of racing through the holidays.

280

:

Over spending our budgets are

over decorating our homes.

281

:

Thank you, Lord that you came.

282

:

Thank you for your word.

283

:

Thank you that bless it are those

who do not see any yet believe.

284

:

Thank you for the opportunity

we have to celebrate in faith.

285

:

Knowing what you did.

286

:

Give us eyes to see our own sin.

287

:

And be humbled and repent.

288

:

And yet rejoice.

289

:

Because the savior has come.

290

:

Maybe we understand that

wonderful counselor is with us.

291

:

Maybe we rejoice and the

mighty God and prince of peace.

292

:

And may we trust you and your

goodness and our circumstances.

293

:

Even as we struggle.

294

:

May we join with the angels and

sing glory to the newborn king.

295

:

Amen.
