Welcome to the One Small Change. I'm thrilled as always that
Speaker:you've taken time out of your busy schedule to join me and
Speaker:listening to this podcast. This is about a journey of
Speaker:exploration and transformation. And I'm your host, Yvonne McCoy,
Speaker:and I bring almost 30 years of entrepreneurial experience, and
Speaker:I have a passion for discovering growth through the power of seemingly
Speaker:small change. And again, thank you. And every week I try to bring
Speaker:you somebody who's interesting, who's going to add to your journey
Speaker:and help you to explore and inspire you, and
Speaker:they're going to share some small, unexpected or insignificant decision
Speaker:that sparked a remarkable transformation and growth in their
Speaker:life, their, you know, personal life, their professional life, or both.
Speaker:And today I bring to you the amazing
Speaker:Michela Quilici . Did. Did I kill it?
Speaker:No, that's perfect. Yvonne, hello. Thank you for having
Speaker:me. So, Michela, tell us
Speaker:about yourself. Tell us what you do and how,
Speaker:you know, this thing made you better at what you do than anybody else.
Speaker:Great question. Okay, so I'm a business
Speaker:growth and leadership coach. I'm actually just celebrating 15
Speaker:years of doing this on my
Speaker:own this last month. So 15 year anniversary.
Speaker:Congratulations. Yeah, thank you. I can't believe it's been
Speaker:15 years already. And I
Speaker:primarily work with business owners and
Speaker:leaders, and they come to me asking kind of a couple of
Speaker:key questions. One is, how do I
Speaker:turn my vision into a.
Speaker:Into traction? So how do I turn my idea into
Speaker:reality? The second question for some folks
Speaker:is, yeah, so I've got a business, but how do I
Speaker:accelerate my path to growth? And the third
Speaker:question that some folks ask is,
Speaker:you know, how do I go from being that chief
Speaker:firefighting officer to the true
Speaker:leader and CEO of a scalable and
Speaker:sustainable business? So I bring
Speaker:strategy and systems and clarity and
Speaker:confidence to my work with
Speaker:business owners and leaders and teams. And Ivonne, I
Speaker:call myself a business navigator because I feel
Speaker:as though actually some of my clients have mentioned that, you
Speaker:know, I'm like a strategic guide, but I've got this roadmap and
Speaker:this compass and I help them navigate those business
Speaker:plateaus with just a little bit more easier ease and grace.
Speaker:And. And so that's really what. What I do.
Speaker:And the other piece of it that's super important,
Speaker:though, is bringing who you are into the business
Speaker:so, you know, we can be successful as, you know,
Speaker:and do all, you know, all the
Speaker:things. But if we are leaving ourselves behind, if
Speaker:we're not building a business that's in alignment with who. Who
Speaker:we are, our values, our vision,
Speaker:our purpose and mapping that
Speaker:to our own self leadership and then marrying
Speaker:that to strategy, then we're not bringing our whole self
Speaker:into the business and into our,
Speaker:you know, our work and the impact that we want to make.
Speaker:So I recently also founded what
Speaker:I call a movement called Ladies who Lead
Speaker:Global. And it's a community, and
Speaker:it is. I've been leading communities of women in business since
Speaker:2015, but this is kind of a newer
Speaker:venture, and I'm calling it a movement because we are
Speaker:women who choose to lead beyond limits.
Speaker:So the, the one change is related
Speaker:to leading beyond limits. So that's, that's what I want to
Speaker:talk about and share a little bit more today with my one change.
Speaker:So. So I have to say I think this is why we connected
Speaker:so well. You have said so many things that I absolutely agree with you on.
Speaker:You know, one of the things that I think is so important is, you
Speaker:know, we are not a divided human being. You know, it, you know,
Speaker:as much as those who have had nine to five jobs, had their nine
Speaker:to five personalities, and then they're like, if you're an entrepreneur,
Speaker:you're, you know, you're on 24 7,
Speaker:and you don't get 24 hours to be an entrepreneur or 24
Speaker:hour and 24 hours to be a person. You've got, you know, so you,
Speaker:you know, you need to live your life, your best life in your business
Speaker:as well as your best life in your personal life. And so
Speaker:having two personalities just, you know, or
Speaker:missions and stuff doesn't work. The other thing you said that I
Speaker:think is so important that people need to really think
Speaker:about is how much time are you
Speaker:spending putting out the fires and not building
Speaker:your business. And in order to do that,
Speaker:you need to have a team that you can lead. Whether that team is
Speaker:actual people that, you know, work, you know, that are. That
Speaker:you are paying, or whether they're the subcontractors or whatever.
Speaker:So that is so important because when I
Speaker:started coaching, the. The sentence that I gave was,
Speaker:do you get to the end of the day and all the things that only
Speaker:you can do are still on your desk?
Speaker:Do you know? So I, I didn't want to take away from what you're saying,
Speaker:but all those questions that you have, people need to listen to those and
Speaker:know that part of that, this is kind of the natural part,
Speaker:the journey. Yes. That we all go. That
Speaker:we all go through. We, you know, go ahead. Absolutely.
Speaker:Absolutely, Yvonne. And I'm so glad that you brought
Speaker:to light those points, because our I've said,
Speaker:I say this all the time. I've learned this myself. I see this over and
Speaker:over again, that our business only grows to the level of
Speaker:our own personal capacity, our own personal
Speaker:leadership, self leadership, ability to lead ourselves.
Speaker:Because if we can't lead ourselves, we'll have a really hard time leading others.
Speaker:And, and so it's, it's not a luxury
Speaker:to have this two personalities. I mean, it's not,
Speaker:it just, it's unsustainable and it doesn't, it doesn't work in
Speaker:the long run. And so the more we can bring ourselves
Speaker:into the business and really think of it like it is a
Speaker:business strategy, you know, we cannot leave the
Speaker:self out of, of the business. It just doesn't, doesn't
Speaker:work. I. This sounds terrible. I'm gonna have such a hard
Speaker:time letting you go, letting you talk, because you're hitting on so many points
Speaker:that I, I'm passionate about. And so, you know, a lot of times
Speaker:when people start with coaches, they're like, why are we doing this mindset
Speaker:stuff? Why are we doing this? You know, but what I find
Speaker:is when I think about, you know, in my own head, the four levels of
Speaker:leadership, there's kind of like self leadership, there's leadership of a project,
Speaker:kind of, there's leadership of a team, and then there's leadership of
Speaker:organization. And as entrepreneurs, we step in the leadership of
Speaker:the project. We have learned, we have not learned
Speaker:the self leadership that actually is going to help our business
Speaker:grow. And so even though, you know, people are talking about
Speaker:mindsets and stuff like that, why am I doing that when I, I just want
Speaker:to do the thing do you know? But that
Speaker:so, so important. Yeah, because
Speaker:the mindset piece is, is another way to say that
Speaker:I think mindset is, that term is over, overrated. It's a
Speaker:buzzword. As you know, people are throwing that around a lot these days. But what
Speaker:does that actually mean? Let's break it down. To me, it means building
Speaker:your capacity, your capacity to do more, hold
Speaker:more, be, be more. And so
Speaker:if you're looking to grow a business, if you're looking to
Speaker:expand your team, if you're looking to scale a business beyond yourself,
Speaker:that is the single thing that will get in the way from
Speaker:where you are to where you want to go. And so I love that you
Speaker:work on that with clients as well, because in that way, you're helping
Speaker:them build capacity. You're helping them grow their wings. If they
Speaker:don't have those wings, they can't fly. And I Know, everyone wants to
Speaker:fly and they just, you know, especially the visionaries, right?
Speaker:And I work with a lot of visionaries, and they just want to fly and
Speaker:they just want to go. And that's amazing because you need
Speaker:that. And do you know that you can fly
Speaker:faster and you can really go further if you work on
Speaker:these. If you have these foundational pieces of,
Speaker:you know, building that capacity and having the right strategy
Speaker:and having the right structure and people to support your vision.
Speaker:It's counterintuitive. Right? So. So
Speaker:let me, Let me just. One of the
Speaker:challenges that I see for entrepreneurs in terms of
Speaker:making that shift into leadership is that you have
Speaker:to go from I'm one of them to, you know,
Speaker:them and us kind of do. You know, it's like,
Speaker:it's. Particularly with women, I find. I call it. I call it the quilting
Speaker:bee mentality. We want to be in the quilting. Be, you know, we're.
Speaker:The action is happening, right? And
Speaker:leadership requires, not that you are different so
Speaker:much, but you have to have a different perspective and you have to be the
Speaker:leader. And my husband said to me once when I was, like, kind of struggling
Speaker:with part of this, he said, think of yourself as the engine on the
Speaker:train. You. You are ahead of
Speaker:everybody else, but you're still with the rest of the cars.
Speaker:They can't come along unless you do what you need to do. And I was
Speaker:like, whoa.
Speaker:I love that. Yeah, yeah, you're out front. You've
Speaker:gotta. You've gotta provide the vision and the energy and the
Speaker:whatever so that you can bring everybody else with you. Absolutely.
Speaker:And at the end of the day, I mean, you've, you know, if you want
Speaker:to have influence over people, you've gotta hold the microphone,
Speaker:so to speak, right? And. And people
Speaker:need, you know, they need to
Speaker:follow. They need somebody to follow. They need somebody to say, hey,
Speaker:everybody, we're going this way. You know, that's where
Speaker:we're going, and shine the light for them. And then you can say, and this
Speaker:is how we're, you know, this, these are the sort of the guard rails, right?
Speaker:Vision, values, etc, that we're going to use to
Speaker:light the pathway. But this is where we're going. This is why
Speaker:we're going. And, you know, this is what we're about,
Speaker:you know, all about and what we're going to be doing. So let's now
Speaker:figure out how we're going to do that, and let's all jump on this path
Speaker:together and go together. But somebody needs to lead.
Speaker:Teams, have captains yeah, ships have captains.
Speaker:Somebody's got to be in charge. And the other thing
Speaker:about what you just said that I think is so important
Speaker:and is missing is when you delegate. You
Speaker:know, to me, delegation is training. You're training
Speaker:somebody to step into the kind of role you would, you know, you
Speaker:want, want to be kind of. And it is not about just
Speaker:do this, do this, do this. And so when you
Speaker:delegate and everybody knows what the mission is and what
Speaker:the journey is and where you're headed, then they can,
Speaker:they can give you better feedback about different ways to do
Speaker:it. They, they do it with much more gusto as opposed to just
Speaker:being a drone. Do this. Exactly.
Speaker:It's called empowerment. Right? I
Speaker:mean, that's what we're doing. We're empowering our team
Speaker:to take responsibility. You know, that needs, you know,
Speaker:we need to get the buy in. We need to have that shared vision. And
Speaker:this is where we're going. And like you said, this is where we're headed. And
Speaker:you know, transfer that ownership onto them so that they feel
Speaker:empowered and so that they feel supported to
Speaker:be able to come forward with ideas, innovate,
Speaker:you know, the solutions, be
Speaker:creative with, you know,
Speaker:thinking about things differently. But if we
Speaker:just tell them what to do, right, that
Speaker:is not going to motivate anybody to do anything.
Speaker:And I think that's, that's one of the big ones for, for
Speaker:newer leaders or, you know, leaders who are having a hard time
Speaker:getting my team what they, you know, to do, what they need to do.
Speaker:That's about, again, building that leadership
Speaker:capacity to step into more of that mentor coach
Speaker:position, right, so that you are being able to
Speaker:really empower your people to,
Speaker:to grab, you know, to, to grab hold of, of whatever
Speaker:it is that you want them to own and run with it with
Speaker:your support. And, and I think the
Speaker:other part, there are two, two other parts of that. The one part is,
Speaker:has to do with not over micromanaging
Speaker:people because that will knock the innovation out of
Speaker:them that will make them, you know, just be like, I'm not doing
Speaker:anything until you tell me to do it. But the
Speaker:downside is if you are really good
Speaker:at this, you will empower
Speaker:your, your people enough that they will leave you.
Speaker:Perhaps there's a, it depends on what you're
Speaker:doing. But I, I, I used to work as season, you know, a seasonal
Speaker:business, and I used to work really hard at bringing people
Speaker:through the ranks. You know, they started, you know, jobs that, you know, required,
Speaker:let's say no skills. And then they got training and then they moved up, and
Speaker:then they moved up. And it was in the tax business. Right.
Speaker:And I dreaded every November because every
Speaker:November people that I had really been working on would come
Speaker:in and go, I hate to tell you this,
Speaker:but I think I'm ready for a real full time
Speaker:job. And I, you
Speaker:know, you have to kind of look at that as a badge. I did my
Speaker:job, you know, I did my job and I'm happy. And you know, I used
Speaker:to jokingly say, you can leave, but you have to find a replacement in the
Speaker:pipeline. You have to find me somebody, somebody
Speaker:that you like that you would benefit, you know, but, you know,
Speaker:absolutely, yes, it's, you know, entrepreneur is an
Speaker:ecosystem. I mean, it is not just about the end
Speaker:product. I mean, it is very much about the client and the
Speaker:service, but it's also about a way of being
Speaker:and your values and what you, you know, and, and so,
Speaker:you know, some of the mini shifts is going from sales to
Speaker:service, going from, you know, I'm looking for a client to how
Speaker:I can support you or can we work together, be more collaborative?
Speaker:And that's not something that, that, that's definitely a
Speaker:shift, I think, from like decades ago.
Speaker:Right. And the idea that,
Speaker:you know, you can go further with more, you know, I,
Speaker:when the first tagline I had for my business is
Speaker:life is a journey, learn to navigate. Because
Speaker:I was very much in the model of I did what I'm supposed to do,
Speaker:I did this, I did this, I did this. And I did not get the
Speaker:results right, you know, following blindly
Speaker:kind of. And so, you know, I think entrepreneurship is
Speaker:definitely a journey. I mean, there, everybody does it differently,
Speaker:but there are certain landmarks that are the same, I think.
Speaker:Absolutely. It's, you know, we each have our own
Speaker:style and personality and
Speaker:vision and values and business model and, and
Speaker:what we offer and the kind of culture we want to create and all of
Speaker:that. But the underpinnings of the business, the engine of the business,
Speaker:that's not up to chance, you know, that is,
Speaker:it's a system, it's an ecosystem, like you said. And so
Speaker:I think if we can get good at,
Speaker:you know, understanding the underpinnings of the business
Speaker:and what are those levers and what are those foundational
Speaker:pieces that need to be in place in order for this machine
Speaker:to move and to operate and then overlay that other
Speaker:piece around, you know, who you are and
Speaker:what you're looking to create and the people you have, I mean, that is,
Speaker:that's the recipe for success. Right there. When you
Speaker:can really hone those two, you
Speaker:know, pieces and really get them, get them humming and working
Speaker:together. I think the challenge that a lot of
Speaker:new entrepreneurs make who
Speaker:perhaps don't have the business
Speaker:background in terms of understanding business models and, you
Speaker:know, like you and I do, is they wing it, right?
Speaker:And there's a lot of winging it that's happening and a
Speaker:lot of, you know, just kind of
Speaker:throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks kind of
Speaker:thing. And I think that that
Speaker:can be quite dangerous, to be honest, because, you know,
Speaker:it can. I've seen it lead to business closures. I've seen
Speaker:it lead to loss of confidence, you know, people
Speaker:going, you know, losing all their money before they can, you know,
Speaker:make the business, you know, viable.
Speaker:So as a new entrepreneur or as a new business owner
Speaker:without that business background, that's
Speaker:where I think it's super important to partner with
Speaker:somebody such as yourself or myself, who have that,
Speaker:you know, experience and that knowledge
Speaker:to really, like, partner, right, and be that
Speaker:strategic guy or that co pilot in the business.
Speaker:It's. It's really, really important.
Speaker:I mean, for me personally, when I left
Speaker:my 9 to 5 and started my own
Speaker:journey into entrepreneurship, I was flailing around
Speaker:for a couple of years until I
Speaker:hired my first business coach. And it was,
Speaker:it was very clear to her what was missing in the business,
Speaker:you know, and, and she was like, you don't have a business model.
Speaker:I'm like, yeah, but I'm selling this and I'm doing this. She's like, no, that's
Speaker:not what you need to do. I'm like,
Speaker:okay, you know, and so you don't know what you
Speaker:don't know when you. And you can go much further when you follow
Speaker:somebody who does know what that path involves.
Speaker:So before we run out of time, I need to ask you what are three
Speaker:things that you would suggest that our, you know, the listeners
Speaker:do? Okay,
Speaker:so there's so many things I could
Speaker:say, but what I
Speaker:wanted to touch on today, which we got off on a
Speaker:completely other different conversation, which is totally fine and
Speaker:totally great. But the one thing that I wanted to lead it back to
Speaker:was this notion around
Speaker:leading beyond limits. Okay? And how
Speaker:this is the self leadership piece, this is about you
Speaker:as a business owner, as a leader, really
Speaker:doing a couple of things. Right? One is owning your
Speaker:vision, right? What is it that you're building? What
Speaker:is it that you're looking to do? What is that? North
Speaker:Star. And really declare it, define it,
Speaker:and then begin imperfectly. With that,
Speaker:because you will, it will get shaped and molded
Speaker:by the external environment, by your
Speaker:customers, by your team, by your, you know,
Speaker:by the feedback that you get from the market.
Speaker:The other thing that comes to mind around the leading beyond limits
Speaker:mindset is align and don't
Speaker:hustle. So this is really about
Speaker:creating flow from alignment,
Speaker:not from forcing. And it's really about checking
Speaker:in around your values, your energy, your
Speaker:calling, your
Speaker:vision, your
Speaker:strengths, and putting those all into
Speaker:alignment so that you have more flow, more
Speaker:fulfillment, more, more abundance, more success
Speaker:and, you know, continuing to
Speaker:calibrate to get into that alignment. Even when
Speaker:there's shiny objects, there's opportunities, especially for the
Speaker:visionaries and the high achievers. I work with a lot of super successful,
Speaker:high achieving women in particular. There's no shortage
Speaker:of opportunities. The key for those folks is to
Speaker:get more into alignment and to say no more
Speaker:often. Yes. Right. That could be the third thing, right? Say
Speaker:no like a leader. Because not every yes is
Speaker:aligned. And leading beyond limits is
Speaker:really all about also about protecting your priorities and
Speaker:protecting your energy and giving yourself permission to
Speaker:say no with love, with confidence,
Speaker:knowing that you've got a path and being clear
Speaker:and confident on that pathway
Speaker:at whatever stage of business you're in. Whether you're
Speaker:that corporate escapee with an idea
Speaker:and you need, you want to, you know, start a business or whether you're
Speaker:that, you know, business owner who's trying to scale
Speaker:and develop a more sustainable business model.
Speaker:So those would be the three things that I would offer.
Speaker:Yeah. So I've got 10 of these. They all are in
Speaker:my free guide, which is my gift. The lead
Speaker:beyond limits. 10 Ways to Lead beyond
Speaker:limits. And so people can grab
Speaker:that@ladiesholeadglobal.com
Speaker:and just pop an email in there and get the guide. And you'll see
Speaker:that in the notes as well. All right, so
Speaker:here's the question. When was the last time you did something new for the first
Speaker:time?
Speaker:Oh, gosh. There's so many things that I like to try,
Speaker:but I would say, okay, just kind of a random thing.
Speaker:I. Last month I started a new
Speaker:morning ritual which includes
Speaker:drinking hot water with lemon and honey as
Speaker:the first thing that I put in my body. And
Speaker:I'm loving it. I'm loving it because it
Speaker:just kind of sets, I don't know, it's like I love rituals.
Speaker:Yeah. Like sets the tone. Right. And then to the rest of the
Speaker:rituals I have in the morning. But that one change that I brought in
Speaker:has just been really. Yeah, there's like sitting and drinking
Speaker:a warm cup of lemon water and honey, you know, in the morning,
Speaker:as you're settling in and getting grounded, it's kind of like a
Speaker:grounding thing. I think. Mine was
Speaker:turmeric tea. You know, like turmeric hot drink in the
Speaker:morning was like amazing. I'm also going to say one other
Speaker:thing about too is, you know.
Speaker:You. Have this incredible presence and confidence that
Speaker:she does flamingo dancing. Oh, yes,
Speaker:flamenco dancing. That's your wild side, right? That's my wild
Speaker:side. So here's the thing. Yeah. Like, I was never
Speaker:confident as a child, so, you know, that flamenco really
Speaker:was another one change that allowed me to really
Speaker:step into who I am. Confidence on stage, off
Speaker:the stage, and it transferred into my business big time. So. All
Speaker:right, we're running out of time. I gotta do the commercial.
Speaker:I want to make sure that everybody's taking a minute to subscribe and share
Speaker:and engage on social media about the podcast. And the reason
Speaker:I do it is I want to bring you interesting people
Speaker:that will supercharge your business through connections and insight
Speaker:and make this a vibrant community and fuel your quest for growth
Speaker:and a bigger growth and bigger impact. So I hope you'll
Speaker:continue to join me on the one small change. And if you
Speaker:haven't heard the first episode about why I did it, you might want
Speaker:to do that. But also there are the quarterly clarity check
Speaker:ins that I do that, talk about business and trends
Speaker:and so take a minute and do that. So what are the last words you
Speaker:want to leave us with?
Speaker:I encourage everybody who is listening and watching
Speaker:to redefine success on your own terms
Speaker:and to really step into leading
Speaker:yourself forward. Leading beyond limits.
Speaker:Stop tolerating what you've got and start creating.
Speaker:Creating what it is that you want.
Speaker:And however that looks like for you in your
Speaker:life and in your business, oh my God.
Speaker:Stick a pin in that.
Speaker:This has been amazing. I wish we had more time, but we'll
Speaker:do this. We'll talk again, I'm sure. So, guys,
Speaker:remember, change is simple, but it's not always easy. It requires
Speaker:courage and resilience and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone.
Speaker:If you are comfortable, you are not growing. And
Speaker:you may think that you're in a good place, but the world is changing
Speaker:around you. And if you are not changing as well, you're getting left behind
Speaker:and you're stagnating. So think about
Speaker:that. My mantra is, I've never been this uncomfortable
Speaker:before. I must be making a great change. So join me
Speaker:again on the one small change as we embark on this journey
Speaker:and make a bolder vision and look for more innovative
Speaker:possibilities. And until the next time, I hope that you
Speaker:will stay curious. Thank you so much for your time.
Speaker:I'm so glad you came. Thank you. Thank you.
