SERIES - Worshipping In Mr. Rogers Neighborhood: I Like You Just The Way You Are

When Fred Rogers was a boy, and saw something on the news that scared him, his mother’s counsel to bring him comfort was, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” The year 2020 will always be known as the year of COVID 19. Quarantines, stay-at-home orders, masks, and anti-bacterial soaps. While there were many who rose to the occasion by self-sacrificially serving on the front lines, helping neighbors or simply following suggested protocols, others stockpiled toilet paper. It’s normal to fear in situations like this, but could the way we manage that fear and how we respond in a crisis reflect on the trust and hope we find in our God?

One of our #WholeLifeTakeAways this week asked: How possible do think it is for us to have no human as an enemy but rather make enemies of hate, meanness, greed, etc.?

This might be the hardest hitting takeaway that I can remember. How possible is it? I wish this wasn’t a question we needed to ask ourselves in 2020, but yet here are we are. As Christians is there a more important show of love for our neighbors, the world, than to live our lives with love and equality for all? So many Christians will leave this issue at the feet of government which has been so complicit in the perpetuation of racism and class warfare that they need someone else to solve this issue. I propose that they need us, the body of Christ. The question that remains is whether or not we will answer the call.
