There are few things in hunting that get passed down more often than advice.

Some of it comes from decades of experience. Some of it comes from mentors who genuinely want to help. And some of it… well… has simply been repeated so many times that nobody ever stops to ask whether it’s actually true.

“Never shoot a young buck.”

“Only hunt mornings.”

“Scent control is everything.”

“Big bucks don’t move in daylight.”

We’ve all heard them. Some of us have probably said them. But how many of these so-called rules are universal truths, and how many only apply under certain circumstances?

Today, we’re putting some of the most common pieces of hunting advice under the microscope. Not because we’re trying to tell you your granddad was wrong or that decades of tradition don’t matter, but because hunting isn’t black and white. Every property is different. Every animal is different. Every hunter has different goals.

Sometimes the best advice in one situation can be the worst advice in another.
