Family Twist, a podcast about relatively unusual stories of long -lost families, adoption, and lots of drama. I'm Corey. And I'm Kendall, and we've been partners for over 16 years.
Hi everyone, this is Kendall and today's episode is from a car ride Cory took with my dad, Scott, on the way to my uncle Sean's house on Cape Cod. So the sound quality is a bit different than other episodes. And while we do still plan to have my dad on another episode, we think that this one contains new information about my biological parents' relationship. Cory and I hope you enjoy it and thanks for listening.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Hey, Chris. Hey, how's everything going? Good. How are you? We're stuck in Boston traffic. Yeah, we're approaching Boston traffic anyway. Right. Oh, are you guys on 93? It's 495. Where abouts on 495? What county now? I think we still have like another 70 -something miles on 495. Yeah. Oh, OK. That's Boston. I think we're going to get there around the same exact time. It says I got 61 miles to go to get to the Cape in hours.
10 minutes from here so. OK, OK, which should be pretty close. Well, it's expected. I think we got Pete and repeat are supposed to come down. Yeah.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:He didn't, you know, didn't fight off more than he can chew because Sean, you know, Sean reached out to him this week and he was like, geez, Sean, I don't know if I can do it. So Pete landed a new job, but he's only been there for like a week. So, you know, there's no way he could take off early on his first Friday working for the company. Probably not the best idea. Yeah. Yeah. So instead.
Instead, what I think he's doing is I think he's probably going to work until around 4 .35 o 'clock and then head straight home, pick up Pete, and then drive, probably get to down to the Cape for like 7 .30. OK, all right. Yeah, a little bit later, you know? Yeah. So, but either way, good night. We'll hang out. We'll hang out by the fire. Yeah. Drink some beers, have some laughs. Yeah. Sounds good. Sounds good.
kick the Red Sox game on next to us, because it's the first game of the ALCS. So we're all looking forward to seeing you guys, and we'll get something to eat, I guess. I don't know if Sean's already got plans for food down there or whatever. And then tomorrow, I'll bring you back down. I'll bring you back home, back to Monaco. And then I'll probably take you out for lunch or something if you want. That sounds good. All right, cool. Awesome. Excellent day.
It'll be good to see you. Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing you. I'll probably see you guys in about an hour and 10 minutes or so. Yeah, around 6 o 'clock I think is when we're supposed to get there. Okay, awesome. Alright, see you in a bit. Drive safe. Alright, you too. See you later. Bye. Is that right for the pork studio radio? Yep. I didn't know the question was coming at all. Yeah, yeah. Cool.
So, Ken will tell you about this like radio thing that we're doing to tell his story about, you know, his life, getting adopted and finding everything. So, yeah, we started doing some recording stuff and then Chris came and did it when I was talking about how, you know, he had the DNA test and all that stuff. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Did you think, I mean, until, did you think you would ever meet your first son before all this stuff happened?
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:I honestly didn't think he wanted me to. Why do you think that? Well, because I wasn't able to take care of him. Well, yeah, I mean, I was too young. Exactly. I mean, it wasn't like I think he said the only way that he would ever have been upset if it would have been like people who are older and knew better than just decided like, oh, I'm the one the hassle of a kid. You know, that wasn't the situation. Right. What was your reaction when Chris told you that?
They got in touch with each other. I was kind of shocked. Wow, we brought that up. It's nice. I mean, it's good to see everybody. Yeah, yeah. I haven't seen Sean in a long time. Yeah. How long ago did you start doing these Boys Weekends things? Things like that. Like I said, so far distance between us. It's a giant ass. Yeah.
Especially now that I don't have a vehicle and I can't go anywhere. Right. But you used to go, well, when they had them at the property, right? Oh, hell yes. Yeah. Well, I had a piece of property across the street that I had bought because we were thinking about buying the third one and making it a big, big lot of ours. Like a compound? Yeah. And I owned a beautiful piece right on the horse field in that part of the street.
was mine. Yeah. So I could fence it in if needed me. But if I'd left it, you know, the way it was, there was a stream running through it. It was great. Nice. Yeah, it was, it was spring fed spring, which is nice, cool. Yeah. Good fishing.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Yeah.
more than I ever, more than both of my brothers by far. Yeah, I got into it big time. I loved it though. Would you and the family go to the Cape for like during summer to like do barbecues and stuff at Sean's? No, it's always in my folks house now. Oh, okay. Because they were still kicking. Yeah. They had a nice place as well. The Cape is where I grew up, you know, unfortunately.
My brother's John was my brother Steve was 16. We were all very close. Yeah Well, there's 15 months between but they're at one time they're all in on the road. Yeah Did your parents ever say they wanted a girl? No, they never did But they thought my mother was pregnant with my brother Sean. Yeah
It was gonna be a girl. Yeah, that's what they assumed because oh, you've already got two sons and my mother also had two sons miscarried. Oh, okay. Yeah, and so we assumed, okay, it's gotta be a girl this time. Yeah. Nope. It didn't happen. My younger brother was born, that's the way it stands, three boys. You had three boys before you got a girl? Yep.
Yeah.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:What was your mother's reaction when she found out you got the girl pregnant? Oh, Jesus, you're out of here. I got a job and I got actually had two jobs when I got married. Yeah. I worked in the commissary as a stock boy and then also taking groceries out of the rail to lease. Yeah. And put them in their car and they give you a tip. Oh, okay. For doing that. Yeah. And I made a lot.
money actually making tips that I did inside stocking. Because in those days, 333 was the top dollar. Right. Now it's like 22.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Yeah, I started very young. I'm ashamed of myself that way because I did use protection. It just didn't work. They're not made as well as they are today. They weren't made.
I just wasn't intentional mom don't beat me because of it. My god I don't want no kid at this age. And getting brought up. That's how he's my son. Right. Right.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Yeah. Yeah.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Did you try to keep in touch with her after they moved away? No. No? Occasionally, you know, like I call her on her birthday or something. Yeah. But, you know, she was doing well with the recording of that special night. It's up to her now. Yeah.
Yeah.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Right. Right. What about after you got married and had kids? Was she nice to the kids? Yes. Yes, she was. Did you guys get along better? Yeah, we got along better and she was proud of the kids. Yeah. You know, granted, you know, my doings as well. Right. But she forgave me for that. You know, I went my way, she went her way. Yeah.
I got married at 17. Got out of the house. Yeah. I didn't even finish high school. Well, with a kid on the way, you gotta work, right? Yeah, exactly right.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Did she mellow out as she got to be old? Yes. Yeah. She had. She was getting closer to death. In a way. In a new way. Oh yeah. Because she was an alcoholic, as well as my father. Yeah. But she drank hard liquor. Yeah. She drank half of the night. Every single night.
that two six packs of plucks would be for every single night. And I said, where did you pick up such a habit? I said, are you kidding? You gotta be kidding me. I said, do you guys see what you do every single night? Then they realized it should shut up.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:But then again, I was gone at 17. My father was very easy going as far as temper. I mean, he didn't like the fact that got, you know, that s***, right? Right. But I said, that happens, you know, it wasn't intentional. I didn't want a child. It just, I used protection. It didn't work. Yeah. It happened to a lot of people then because they weren't made as well as they are today. Yeah.
Yes. Yeah.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:So did you talk to her first or did she talk to you? Oh no, we both, it was like, well, she was only two doors down. We rode the same bus, so we started talking on the bus. Just, you know, got closer and closer as we went. One thing led to another and Kendall came along. But that was, you guys were, we were seeing each other for a long time, right? Oh yeah, about a year ago. And then she says,
into the second years when Kendall came along. Right. Right. But she moved away. Her father's mother moved to get away from me. Right. Right. They went to have the baby. Yeah. To have the baby, yeah. Yeah. To have the baby and get away from me because they thought I was just a hippie. They're embracing hell. You know, no care for her or anything ever wrong. I love them. Yeah. But.
they made it a little more untouchable than I wanted. Right, right. I was very mescalous when I was young. It was a different time. Absolutely. It was a hippie days. Exactly what it was. Peace, love, free love. Right. Yeah.
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Has he ever been to the Cape? Mm -hmm. Yeah. Well, he went just a couple of weeks ago. His daughter was in town visiting one of her daughters, Stephanie. Oh, okay. And so they went to the Cape that weekend. She must have been in her 20s. She's just turned 50. She just turned 50? Yeah. Holy Christ. Yeah. That's right. What am I talking about? I remember y 'all started young.
Just to get away from mom. Well, didn't stop either. I think. She and she's not going to be here. No, no, no. God, no, no, no, no, no
Corey & Kendall Stulce (:Yeah, I think she just I don't know if she can handle it, you know, I think she's just trying to leave the past in the past, you know, yeah. So what's I can understand? Yeah, I mean, it's been upsetting for him, you know, but you know, you can't force her. Right. We've met. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She probably looks quite a bit like actually. Call her, I think.
Yeah, she was even younger when she was young she was taller. Yeah. I think she's about 5 '2". Yeah, maybe. Yeah, I actually asked my parents if I could marry her and they said, oh, you're too young. And I was. Yeah. Her parents, as soon as they found out she was pregnant, they knew. I can understand now that I'm an adult.
