Is it positive thinking? Emotional control? A way to avoid painful feelings? Or simply Choice Theory with a different name?
The answer is no.
In this episode, I explain what Mental Freedom really is, where it came from, and why I developed it after nearly 30 years of work as a counselor, coach, trainer, and educator.
Choice Theory, developed by Dr. William Glasser, is one of the strongest foundations of Mental Freedom, but it isn't the entire framework. Mental Freedom also integrates insights from trauma-informed care, emotional intelligence, neuroscience, coaching, human behavior, and decades of practical experience.
At the heart of Mental Freedom is one central question:
How can people reduce unnecessary psychological suffering and create more influence over their own lives?
I define Mental Freedom as the ability to remain emotionally grounded when life doesn't go your way, so you can respond intentionally instead of reacting automatically.
In this episode, you'll explore:
- The relationship between Mental Freedom and Choice Theory
- Why Mental Freedom isn't about eliminating difficult emotions
- The space between what happens and how we respond
- How we can learn to enlarge that space
- Why awareness creates the possibility of choice
- How our stories, expectations, and language influence our responses
- Why Mental Freedom is a practice rather than a switch you flip
- How intentional choices help shape the person you're becoming
Mental Freedom doesn't promise that life will always go your way. People will disappoint you. Relationships may change. Difficult and painful things will happen.
What Mental Freedom offers is the possibility that even when you can't control what happens, you can increase your influence over how you respond and who you become because of it.
The next time something doesn't go your way, consider asking yourself:
What response would move me toward the person I most want to become?
Because Mental Freedom isn't about getting a different life.
It's about becoming a different person within the life you already have.
