Why Making a Good Podcast Isn't the Same as Growing One

You've done everything right. Good audio, thoughtful episodes, publishing every single week. And your downloads haven't moved in months.

Here's what nobody tells you. It might not be your content at all. It might be that nobody can find it. Or it might be that they do find it, and they're gone in ten seconds.

Those are two completely different problems, and they need two completely different fixes.

In This Episode

I'm calling this the Door and Bridge Check. Every listener you'll ever get has to do two things, find your podcast, and decide to stay. The finding is the bridge. The staying is the door. Most podcasters spend all their energy building bridges and never check whether the door actually opens.

We start with the door, since it's the fastest fix and there's no point sending more people to one that doesn't work. Then we walk through three bridges, promoting the problem instead of the podcast, borrowing the right audience, and giving people an episode to send instead of a podcast to share. And I'll tell you why you should pick exactly one of the three, not all of them at once.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fix the Door Before Building Bridges: Make sure a new visitor can quickly understand and choose to follow the podcast before investing more effort in promotion.
  • Make Your Podcast Page Click in 10 Seconds: Clearly communicate who the show serves, what listeners will gain, and where to start.
  • Promote the Problem, Not the Episode: Lead with a listener’s specific frustration to create interest, rather than simply announcing a new episode.
  • Borrow the Right Audience: Reach relevant listeners through aligned podcasts, guests, newsletters, or communities; prioritize fit over sheer audience size.
  • Make Episodes Worth Sharing: Focus episodes on a specific person and situation, giving listeners a clear reason to send them to a friend.
  • Commit to One Bridge for 30 Days: Choose one growth strategy and give it enough time before judging the results.
  • Let a Stranger Test Your Podcast Page: Give someone unfamiliar with the show 10 seconds to browse, then ask who it’s for, what they’d get, and which episode they’d play first.
  • Promotion Is Service, Not Vanity: Treat helping the right listeners find the podcast as a way to share its message.

The Door and Bridge Check

Before you record or post anything this week, run through this.

Your door has to answer, fast:

  1. Is this for me?
  2. What will I get?
  3. Where do I start?

Then choose one bridge:

  1. Promote the problem, not the podcast.
  2. Borrow the right audience.
  3. Give her an episode to send.

Stay with that one bridge for 30 days before you decide whether it's working.

Free Discovery Calls, All of October

I'm bringing back free calls for the entire month of October.

If your podcast feels stuck, or you're not sure whether you have a door problem or a bridge problem, let's talk it through together. Where your podcast is right now, what's working, and what deserves your attention next.
