Shownotes

Have you ever found yourself thinking...

"Why did I react like that?"

Maybe someone didn't text you back.

Maybe your boss gave you feedback.

Maybe your partner used the wrong tone of voice.

Logically, you know it shouldn't have affected you that much...

Yet emotionally, it felt overwhelming.

In this week's Tammy's Takes, we're building on my powerful conversation with David Dean Haskell, author of Wounded Angels and Inner Child Unleashed, who reminded us that our biggest emotional reactions often have very little to do with what's happening today.

Today, I'm taking that idea one step further.

Because your triggers aren't random.

They're not proof that you're too sensitive.

And they're certainly not evidence that you're broken.

They're messages from a younger part of you that still remembers what it felt like to be rejected, criticized, abandoned, or unseen.

In this episode you'll learn:

✔ Why emotional triggers often have nothing to do with the present moment

✔ The difference between today's event and yesterday's wound

✔ How childhood survival patterns shape adult reactions

✔ Why curiosity heals faster than self-judgment

✔ Three powerful questions to ask whenever you're triggered

✔ How to begin calming your nervous system instead of fighting it

Healing isn't about never getting triggered again.

Healing is learning to understand what your triggers have been trying to teach you all along.

Ready to Go Deeper?

If you're ready to stop reacting from survival mode and start responding from a place of calm, I'd love to help.

Speaker:

Welcome back to another episode of

Tammy's Takes, where we take powerful

2

:

conversations with our guests and

turn them into practical strategies

3

:

you can use right here, right now.

4

:

So if you haven't listened to my

episode with David Dean Haskell,

5

:

author of Wounded Angels and Inner

Child Unleashed, I encourage you to

6

:

go back and listen after this episode.

7

:

David shared something,

that I absolutely loved.

8

:

He said that when our emotional reaction

feels much bigger than the situation

9

:

in front of us, it usually is because

something much older has been touched.

10

:

And I thought, "Oh my God, yes,

exactly," because that's one of

11

:

the biggest misunderstandings

people have about healing.

12

:

People come to me all the time

with, say things like, "Tammy,

13

:

I don't know why I get so upset.

14

:

I don't know why I couldn't stop crying.

15

:

I don't know why I shut down.

16

:

I don't know why I get so angry."

17

:

They assume something is wrong with them.

18

:

But what if nothing's wrong with you?

19

:

What if it's just your nervous system

simply trying to finish a conversation

20

:

that started many, many years ago?

21

:

Here's what I teach my clients.

22

:

There are events, and then there

are meanings to those events.

23

:

The event today might be tiny.

24

:

Someone forgets to text you back.

25

:

The spouse sounds irritated.

26

:

Your boss gives you constructive feedback.

27

:

A friend doesn't invite you somewhere.

28

:

Those are today's events

that happen every single day.

29

:

But your nervous system doesn't always

seem to react from today's event.

30

:

It reacts to yesterday's meaning, meaning

if you spent your childhood feeling

31

:

totally ignored, being out, being left

out today doesn't just feel disappointing.

32

:

It feels completely familiar.

33

:

So if you were constantly criticized

growing up, your mom was always telling

34

:

you you were doing something wrong,

when you get constructive feedback

35

:

from your boss, it doesn't just feel

uncomfortable, it feels dangerous.

36

:

If love was unpredictable and you always

had to earn your peace and earn your

37

:

love, silence doesn't feel peaceful.

38

:

It feels like abandonment.

39

:

That's why your reaction seems

so much bigger than the moment.

40

:

Guys, you've heard me say it so

many times, time and time again.

41

:

When you were little,

everything feels big.

42

:

So if you were living from the past when

you were little, it's going to feel big.

43

:

One of my favorite things that David

talked about was how triggers often

44

:

point us back toward your younger

selves, and I completely agree with that.

45

:

But here's what I wanna take

just a little bit further.

46

:

I don't want you to fear

your triggers anymore.

47

:

I want you to become curious about them.

48

:

Stop looking at them with judgment,

because every single trigger you have,

49

:

it's nothing more than information.

50

:

It literally contains all the

information you need to heal.

51

:

So instead of asking yourself this

dreaded question of what's wrong with me,

52

:

those four words that I think ought to

be taken out of the English vocabulary

53

:

completely, start asking yourself, "What

is this reaction trying to protect?"

54

:

It's a completely different question,

and when you start asking it, it's going

55

:

to change the way you look at yourself.

56

:

If I had to give this a name, and you

know I love giving things a name, I

57

:

would actually just call this becoming

the detective instead of the judge.

58

:

Most of us judge ourselves immediately.

59

:

What do you say to yourself?

60

:

You go, "Oh my gosh, I

shouldn't feel this way.

61

:

I'm overreacting.

62

:

I'm too sensitive.

63

:

No wonder nobody likes me."

64

:

Sound familiar?

65

:

Yeah, we've all said

those things to ourselves.

66

:

But instead, I want you to

put your detective hat on.

67

:

Ask yourself, "What happened?

68

:

What did I make that mean?

69

:

And more importantly, when

have I felt this before?"

70

:

Notice I didn't ask,

"When did this start?"

71

:

Because sometimes you don't

even know when that started.

72

:

Sometimes your body remembers

long before your mind does.

73

:

So here's something I

want you to try this week.

74

:

Simple exercise.

75

:

The next time you notice a big emotional

reaction, just pause, take a slow breath,

76

:

and ask yourself these three questions.

77

:

Number one: What just happened?

78

:

Number two: What is the story

I immediately tell myself?

79

:

And number three, and this may

seem really strange to you, but

80

:

how old do I feel right now?

81

:

The last question surprises almost

everyone, because you'll often

82

:

realize, "I don't feel 57 years old.

83

:

I feel 8, or I feel 12.

84

:

I feel 5.

85

:

I feel like that scared little kid

who believed they weren't enough."

86

:

And that is incredibly invaluable

information Because honestly, once

87

:

you realize that your eight-year-old

self is driving the bus, you can

88

:

lovingly invite your adult self

back into the driver's seat.

89

:

Healing doesn't happen

because you get triggered.

90

:

Healing happens because you stop believing

every trigger is telling you the truth.

91

:

The trigger is not your enemy.

92

:

It's a messenger, and if you stop

fighting it long enough to listen,

93

:

it may show you exactly where your

next layer of healing is waiting.

94

:

David also shared something

that I hope sticks with you.

95

:

He reminded us, "Don't

give up on yourself."

96

:

I couldn't agree more.

97

:

Healing isn't about pretending

your childhood never happened.

98

:

It's about refusing to let it

write the rest of your story.

99

:

I talk all the time about how when

I was a child, I used to feel like

100

:

somebody else was writing my story,

and I wasn't holding the pen.

101

:

But now I am a grown-ass adult,

and I get to hold the pen to this.

102

:

I get to write the rest of my

story, and so do you, my friends.

103

:

You get to write the rest of your story.

104

:

So if this episode resonated with

you at all, and you're kinda tired

105

:

of reacting in ways that you don't

understand, I would love to help you.

106

:

During my complimentary Clarity

and Calm call, we'll be identifying

107

:

the survival patterns your nervous

system learned years ago and more

108

:

importantly, how to start changing them.

109

:

Or if you're just curious about maybe

what chronic stress did to you and how

110

:

you might be communicating through these

patterns through your body, I also offer

111

:

a complimentary AO Biofrequency scan demo.

112

:

We can explore your body's stress patterns

and talk about practical next steps.

113

:

You'll find both links in the show notes.

114

:

But before you go, I want you

to remember this: your trigger

115

:

is not proof that you're broken.

116

:

It's proof that a younger part of

you is still waiting to be heard.

117

:

So until that time, take care of yourself,

be gentle with yourself, and remember,

118

:

healing begins the moment curiosity

becomes stronger than self-judgment.

119

:

I'll see you next time.

120

:

Take care, and I love you guys.

121

:

Have a good day.
