When your spouse doesn’t want to get on board with a budget?
Start small with them, drastically shifting your lifestyle sometimes overnight can be really hard on your partner if they aren’t really looking forward to getting onto a budget. Start with little changes like instead of going cold turkey to not going out all the time, maybe limit it to a few days a week. If your partner is just going off and spending money wildly than that's going to be a bigger conversation you are going to need to have. Communication between couples about money is one of the most important components in any financial future together.
When to save for retirement?
Yesterday. Right now. Start today. If you have a 401K option you should be paying into that any thing you possibly can. Also getting a Roth IRA as you work on paying down your debts so that you can slowly start tucking away money. Create a retirement savings account with your bank that you can again put money away that you will leave untouched. Use a well known and reputable investment app such as Stash, Acorns, get into responsible cryptocurrency.
Investing in emergency preparedness?
Yes. Do it as soon as you can. Climate change is not going anywhere unfortunately and we have to be prepared to survive potentially harsher conditions as the severity of natural disasters ramp up. Have extra water, non perishable foods you can eat without power, sleeping bags, emergency blankets, flashlights, tape, paper products. Keep these things in a waterproof tote and keep them easily accessible in the event of any kind of emergency. Have a plan in place.
