Guanajuato is a beautiful central Mexican state which is known for its rich colonial history. Mexico is a country rich in culture and history, and its language is no exception.

What does Guanajuato mean ?

Guanajuato is a Mexican word that can trace its origins back to the Aztec civilization. Guanajuato is a word of Mexican origin. What does Guanajuato mean ? The name Guanajuato comes from the Nahuatl word "cuauhnāhuatl", meaning "hill of frogs" or "place of frogs".

According to legend, the city was founded by a group of Aztec hunters who were chasing a frog through the hills. The frog led them to a spring of freshwater, and they decided to settle there. 

According to another legend, the city was founded after an indigenous woman had a dream in which she was told to settle at the junction of two rivers. When she awoke, she found herself surrounded by frogs, and so she took this as a sign that she should indeed build her home there.

Today, the image of a frog is often used as a symbol of the city. 

The name Guanajuato eventually came to be used for the entire state of Guanajuato, which is located in central Mexico. Today, the word Guanajuato is still used to refer to both the state and its capital city.

This charming name is fitting for the state, as it is home to many picturesque towns and villages set amidst rolling hills and lush green fields.
