Of all of podcasting's problems, "sameness" isn't one.
Evo Terra:Listen to 10 different podcasts, and you're likely to hear 10
Evo Terra:different approaches to sound.
Evo Terra:Are those differences from intentional design choices?
Evo Terra:Today's episode is brought to you by the Advancing Podcasting
Evo Terra:community at advancingpodcasting.xyz.
Evo Terra:Because why would I do anything normal?
Evo Terra:It's a special community just for listeners and readers of
Evo Terra:Podcast Pontifications and it's populated by like-minded working
Evo Terra:podcasters just like you who also want to make podcasting better.
Evo Terra:You're already listening to the show.
Evo Terra:So why not extend the conversation and your influence
Evo Terra:on the future of podcasting?
Evo Terra:Join us today at advancingpodcasting.xyz.
Evo Terra:Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.
Evo Terra:Does your podcast have a style?
Evo Terra:Not a type like narrative non-fiction, chatcast, or monologue, but a style,
Evo Terra:a design, some sort of artistic identity or affectation that you're
Evo Terra:going for with each of your episodes.
Evo Terra:I was watching Love, Death & Robots, an animated television series on
Evo Terra:Netflix, which is great, by the way, very different styles of animation
Evo Terra:in those short ten to fifteen-minute long episodes ranging from the
Evo Terra:hyper-realistic 3-D - is that real or not?
Evo Terra:- down to the Harryhausen style of Claymation almost.
Evo Terra:And as I was watching, I realized that some of those definitely looked better
Evo Terra:to me, and I think better to anybody, and by better, I mean more fluid style.
Evo Terra:Some of them were nearly lifelike, as I said.
Evo Terra:While others were far less...perfect, if you will, very jerky animation,
Evo Terra:blocky coloring, or backgrounds that looked, well, fake.
Evo Terra:But I'm betting that 100% of those episodes were all rendered on a computer.
Evo Terra:Probably very likely the same or similar computer with the same or
Evo Terra:similar computer programs as the person who did the much more realistic ones.
Evo Terra:Just like 100% of podcasts are rendered on a computer.
Evo Terra:Now, why didn't those different episodes look, at least from
Evo Terra:a style perspective, the same?
Evo Terra:Was it a time savings decision?
Evo Terra:Did the producer not want to spend the time to make it more realistic,
Evo Terra:so, therefore, they just they're stuck with that jerky style,
Evo Terra:herky-jerky movement because they couldn't afford to make it any better?
Evo Terra:No, of course that wasn't why that was done.
Evo Terra:The decision to have that herky-jerky movement, to have that replication of Ray
Evo Terra:Harryhausen style Claymation was a choice.
Evo Terra:They were trying to affect a particular style.
Evo Terra:So I'll ask that question of you again, does your podcast have a style?
Evo Terra:Does it have intentional design elements that make it unlike most other podcasts,
Evo Terra:but very much like a few others.
Evo Terra:And if so, can you name those other shows?
Evo Terra:Are you communicating with the people who make podcasts in the same style, again,
Evo Terra:not topic in the same style as yours, so that you can share tips and techniques and
Evo Terra:generally raise the profile of the style of podcasting you and others are doing.
Evo Terra:And if you're not, why not start now?
Evo Terra:Seems like a good idea, because I can assure you that listeners
Evo Terra:love a particular style.
Evo Terra:Everyone shouldn't say that a lot of people who listen to a lot of
Evo Terra:podcasts have a particular style, an artistic feeling and a flair that
Evo Terra:they want out of their podcasts.
Evo Terra:We talk about them as people who listen to true crime, but that's topic.
Evo Terra:I'm telling you, there are people out there who like certain styles,
Evo Terra:it hits an endorphin spot in their brain and they love it.
Evo Terra:And if you can find more people who have their endorphins tripped
Evo Terra:by the kind of podcasting you are making, the style of your show, the
Evo Terra:artistic-ness, the way that it feels.
Evo Terra:They're going to want it.
Evo Terra:They're going to want a lot more of that.
Evo Terra:Again, people who love that style will happily consume as much
Evo Terra:of that style as they can find.
Evo Terra:So if in fact, you do have a style you're going for start organizing, find out who
Evo Terra:else has that style propel your entire style of podcasting forward to find more
Evo Terra:people lean into that style of podcast.
Evo Terra:Are you.
Evo Terra:Now if you like the style of this podcast, and more importantly, you
Evo Terra:got some value from my episodes.
Evo Terra:Be they business focused or like this one, much more focused on the nuances and
Evo Terra:the artistic and the style of podcasting.
Evo Terra:Please return some of that value - we call it value for value - by a
Evo Terra:recurring virtual coffee purchase at BuyMeACoffee.com/evoterra.
Evo Terra:With that I shall be back tomorrow with yet another Podcast Pontifications.
Evo Terra:Cheers!
