What does a kettle have to do with systems?

Actually quite a lot... especially if it's a component of a system 😉

Jonathan Stewart:

A system is not something that needs to

Jonathan Stewart:

fix you or make you better.

Jonathan Stewart:

A system is a safety net.

Jonathan Stewart:

In a previous episode, I redefined systems as a series of components that

Jonathan Stewart:

work together towards a common goal.

Jonathan Stewart:

Now in the way things are spoken about currently, it's about trying to fix

Jonathan Stewart:

things that's wrong with you to make you fit in a certain way of working.

Jonathan Stewart:

However, it's designed to be a safety net to support your way of working.

Jonathan Stewart:

Not trying to completely change it.

Jonathan Stewart:

If the way you work doesn't support what you're trying to achieve,

Jonathan Stewart:

which can indeed still be a thing.

Jonathan Stewart:

A system can be that safety net for when things fall over a bit.

Jonathan Stewart:

Because you're human, not a robot.

Jonathan Stewart:

A good example of this is a non-business thing.

Jonathan Stewart:

I mentioned a kettle in a previous audio . I often operate on an out

Jonathan Stewart:

of sight out of mind mentality.

Jonathan Stewart:

This has never been more truer when it comes to making myself a hot drink.

Jonathan Stewart:

Now, my studio is not the warmest, so hot drinks are a must.

Jonathan Stewart:

I also get super dehydrated very, very easily.

Jonathan Stewart:

So I need to drink plenty and do have a tendency to drink a lot of tea.

Jonathan Stewart:

If you see any of the videos or the podcasts that I'm on.

Jonathan Stewart:

I always have a drink by my side, often two.

Jonathan Stewart:

Now previously I had a traditional kettle, which required at least two three, maybe

Jonathan Stewart:

even five minutes to make a cup of tea.

Jonathan Stewart:

So I used to put the kettle on, I go back to work.

Jonathan Stewart:

Three hours past.

Jonathan Stewart:

I forgot that I was trying to make myself a drink.

Jonathan Stewart:

I'm dehydrated.

Jonathan Stewart:

Oh, I boiled the kettle and now it's cold and I have to do it again.

Jonathan Stewart:

That process then repeats itself over and over.

Jonathan Stewart:

So instead of trying to force myself to fix that, I thought, well, is it

Jonathan Stewart:

possible to buy a kettle that super fast to boil and also fills up my cup?

Jonathan Stewart:

So even if I do forget.

Jonathan Stewart:

I'll have a drink.

Jonathan Stewart:

Now I could have created reminders to try and force myself to remember force myself

Jonathan Stewart:

to wait and focus and probably a host of other, just get better at it things.

Jonathan Stewart:

But instead, the kettle that I've bought and use is a mundane

Jonathan Stewart:

example of a component of a system.

Jonathan Stewart:

That's part of the safety net.

Jonathan Stewart:

I am piece of that system and it supports me.

Jonathan Stewart:

Do I still forget things?

Jonathan Stewart:

Yes.

Jonathan Stewart:

Will that ever change unlikely, but have a catalog boils faster?

Jonathan Stewart:

That means more times than not.

Jonathan Stewart:

I always have a drink ready to drink, whether it's hot or cold.

Jonathan Stewart:

Is another story.

Jonathan Stewart:

We are bombarded by things we should be doing each and every day in our business.

Jonathan Stewart:

However, sometimes things in our real life.

Jonathan Stewart:

Outside of our business can have a fantastic influence on the way we work.

Jonathan Stewart:

Remembering that your system shouldn't fix you and be focused on providing

Jonathan Stewart:

a support network or a safety net to support you allows you to get

Jonathan Stewart:

things done in a way that fits you.

Jonathan Stewart:

If you're interested in learning how you can create systems that support your

Jonathan Stewart:

brain in your business and your life.
