Lucia Knight:Now, this might be a weird topic, but we've covered lots of seemingly weird
Lucia Knight:topics that impact stress and joy at work.
Lucia Knight:This week I want to talk about something that I've been trying
Lucia Knight:to change for myself since I discovered it, and it's been so hard.
Lucia Knight:And I wonder if maybe you've noticed it yourself.
Lucia Knight:Let me start with a story about how this weird thing was discovered.
Lucia Knight:Back in 2007 Linda Stone, a former Microsoft executive, sits down
Lucia Knight:to tackle her inbox and realizes she's doing something weird.
Lucia Knight:She's inhaling in anticipation, but not exhaling.
Lucia Knight:Emails keep pouring in, and she's just holding her breath.
Lucia Knight:This is where I leaned in.
Lucia Knight:She started wondering, is this just me or are other people doing this too?
Lucia Knight:So she did a little kitchen table experiment.
Lucia Knight:She recruited friends and she said at monitors, and guess what,
Lucia Knight:80% of them were also holding their breath or breathing really
Lucia Knight:shallowly while working on a screen.
Lucia Knight:She called it screen apnea like sleep apnea, but with your eyes wide
Lucia Knight:open and staring at your screen.
Lucia Knight:Now, I don't get it with all screens, but when I analyze my own
Lucia Knight:breath, it only seems to happen when I'm reading or writing emails.
Lucia Knight:And emails are how I run my business.
Lucia Knight:I suffer from email apnea.
Lucia Knight:Here's the really intriguing thing in Linda's experiment, the 20%
Lucia Knight:who were not holding their breaths were trained performers, dancers,
Lucia Knight:singers, a test pilot, even a cellist.
Lucia Knight:People who had learned to breathe while focused.
Lucia Knight:So what's going on with the rest of us?
Lucia Knight:Science journalist, James Nestor, who wrote the book Breath.
Lucia Knight:Says, most of us have forgotten how to breathe properly.
Lucia Knight:We breathe through our mouths, we breathe into our chests.
Lucia Knight:We hold our breath without realizing.
Lucia Knight:And when we're hunched over our screens all day, our bodies
Lucia Knight:literally can't take a breath.
Lucia Knight:So what happens?
Lucia Knight:We go shallow.
Lucia Knight:Our brains get stress signals.
Lucia Knight:Suddenly focus is gone.
Lucia Knight:Moods are low.
Lucia Knight:Decision making gets foggy and energy depletes.
Lucia Knight:But here's the good news.
Lucia Knight:You can retrain your body to breathe well, even when emailing.
Lucia Knight:I've been doing a little work on this daily and it's really hard.
Lucia Knight:How is something so natural, so hard?
Lucia Knight:So if you think you might be holding your breath while emailing or just
Lucia Knight:looking at screens, here's some ideas to experiment with getting your breath back.
Lucia Knight:Experiment one.
Lucia Knight:Become aware.
Lucia Knight:Just check in with yourself a few times a day.
Lucia Knight:Are you holding your breath while scrolling?
Lucia Knight:While reading emails, while writing emails, or while doing
Lucia Knight:some other online activity?
Lucia Knight:Are you breathing shallowly?
Lucia Knight:If you are, try and catch it.
Lucia Knight:If you catch it once, take a few slow.
Lucia Knight:Deep nose breaths as a reset.
Lucia Knight:Experiment number two, watch a baby or a dog.
Lucia Knight:Seriously.
Lucia Knight:Healthy dogs and infants breathe perfectly.
Lucia Knight:Their bellies rise and fall.
Lucia Knight:Their breath is soft, slow, and through the nose.
Lucia Knight:That's the gold standard.
Lucia Knight:Experiment number three, try out an instrument.
Lucia Knight:Linda Stone, the person who coined the phrase screen
Lucia Knight:apnea, took up an instrument.
Lucia Knight:Then ballroom dancing both helped with her posture and
Lucia Knight:awareness of mindful breathing.
Lucia Knight:Now, I'm a swimmer, and one of the reasons I feel so good after even the
Lucia Knight:shortest of swims is that I've been doing big deliberate breaths and I feel
Lucia Knight:more relaxed, more able to deal with stress and just happier after swimming.
Lucia Knight:Experiment number four.
Lucia Knight:Step away from the blue light.
Lucia Knight:Move away from the screen.
Lucia Knight:Do it now.
Lucia Knight:Stand up, stretch out, and breathe even a minute or two.
Lucia Knight:Helps calm the nervous system and refreshes your brain.

Lucia Knight:Experiment five, try out a breathing app.
Lucia Knight:There are a load of them out there.
Lucia Knight:They'll play a sound or a tone that guides your breathing while you work.
Lucia Knight:Now, years ago, I tried out the Vim Hof app, but I got so frustrated
Lucia Knight:by being sold too constantly.
Lucia Knight:I deleted it.
Lucia Knight:I am currently totally obsessed with Lawrence Van Lingen, who's more
Lucia Knight:my vibe as my teenagers would say.
Lucia Knight:He has released a free breathing app called Aeri, A-E-R-I, which is a super
Lucia Knight:simple place to retrain yourself.
Lucia Knight:I admit it, I've totally fallen down a Lawrence Van Lingen
Lucia Knight:shaped rabbit hole on YouTube.
Lucia Knight:He's got me walking backwards, doing his Happy Hips mobility training
Lucia Knight:every morning, strengthening my feet, flow roping, and trying to
Lucia Knight:source a tire to pull up hills.
Lucia Knight:The man is a genius of holistic body movement, you've been warned.
Lucia Knight:Experiment number six.
Lucia Knight:Two little reset breathing exercises.
Lucia Knight:Here's the simplest breathing exercise from Jane's Nester.
Lucia Knight:Breathe in through your nose for five to six seconds.
Lucia Knight:Feel your belly expand.
Lucia Knight:Then your chest.
Lucia Knight:Nice and gentle.
Lucia Knight:Now exhale through your nose for the same amount of time.
Lucia Knight:Repeat for two minutes.
Lucia Knight:Done.
Lucia Knight:See how you feel.
Lucia Knight:And then there's another simple breathing technique called the
Lucia Knight:physiological sigh, which is so simple.
Lucia Knight:It goes like this.
Lucia Knight:Take two short in heels through the nose.
Lucia Knight:Followed by one long, slow exhale through the mouth.
Lucia Knight:I play with this a lot during my day and I find it most helpful to do when
Lucia Knight:someone has just cut me up in the car.
Lucia Knight:Or when I've accidentally seen a disturbing image on the news or when
Lucia Knight:I've heard some bad news on email or in real life, I find the physiological
Lucia Knight:sigh a real pattern disruptor.
Lucia Knight:And it's great to have in your daily life toolkit.
Lucia Knight:It just works.
Lucia Knight:When you do either of these breathing exercises or your own, your body starts to
Lucia Knight:remember how to breathe naturally, even.
Lucia Knight:When we're knee deep in spreadsheets or slack messages.
Lucia Knight:Screen apnea and email apnea are a real problem in lives where we spend
Lucia Knight:so much time looking at screens.
Lucia Knight:I'm even doing it now, but with just a little awareness and a few
Lucia Knight:simple tools, we can breathe better, we can feel better, and maybe even
Lucia Knight:make better decisions while we work.
Lucia Knight:Try a few of these little experiments this week, see what difference they make.
Lucia Knight:I hope you fall down a breathing improvement rabbit hole because it's
Lucia Knight:so foundational, but so many of us miss out on the benefits that could
Lucia Knight:form a solid base for a long and enjoyable life at work and beyond,
Lucia Knight:and you absolutely deserve that.
