Transcripts

Ghia:

Hi everyone.

2

:

This is Ghia.

3

:

I'm this week's host of the

creative, spiritual journey podcast.

4

:

Here we are in March.

5

:

It's still winter or what

we might call late winter.

6

:

This is the time of year when the

sun is especially tantalizing.

7

:

We wear sunglasses, which

is important in the snow.

8

:

So we don't burn our eyes.

9

:

And it's lighter in the morning,

which is my favorite part.

10

:

There was a time in my life when what I

wanted more than anything was for it to

11

:

be light in the morning when I got up.

12

:

I was a single mom.

13

:

I was lonely.

14

:

Financially stressed

and perpetually tired.

15

:

And dark mornings just added to my gloom.

16

:

I still love the growing light.

17

:

But the darkness isn't as

disheartening as it once was.

18

:

I'm not sure when this changed for

me, but I would guess it was sometime

19

:

after I met a wonderful woman in Canada

who lived very close to the land.

20

:

Surviving, almost exclusively

off what she could grow or make.

21

:

I told her about how much

I longed for the light.

22

:

And I will never forget her response.

23

:

She told me that for her light

meant it was time to work.

24

:

Living off the land.

25

:

She had to work from sunrise to sunset

during the gardening months to make

26

:

sure she had enough food for winter.

27

:

When darkness finally came, it

meant the work was done and she

28

:

could get some glorious rest.

29

:

That's when I realized the

true cause of my melancholy.

30

:

In my so-called modern life, I

was almost completely removed from

31

:

the natural rhythms of the earth.

32

:

No wonder I was sad.

33

:

I didn't know where I was in the world.

34

:

As I've worked to tune into the seasons,

I've learned something wonderful about

35

:

this time of year called late winter.

36

:

Yes, late winter is still cold and

there is still storm potential.

37

:

And it's maddening to have spring

beckoning from around an elusive corner.

38

:

We never quite turn.

39

:

But I'm begging you.

40

:

Don't give into that allure.

41

:

Don't rush through the

last part of winter.

42

:

Let me explain why.

43

:

I'm going to start with a

quote from elder UQ Dorff.

44

:

This is from his talk daily restoration.

45

:

He says.

46

:

As our days go.

47

:

So go our lives.

48

:

And next he quotes from the book

Jurassic park, which makes me laugh.

49

:

The quote goes.

50

:

A day is like a whole life.

51

:

You start out doing one thing,

but end up doing something else.

52

:

Plan to run an errand,

but never get there.

53

:

At the end of your life,

your whole existence has the

54

:

same haphazard quality to.

55

:

Your whole life has the

same shape as a single day.

56

:

Now elder UQ dwarf.

57

:

RF continues by saying.

58

:

Do you want to change

the shape of your life?

59

:

Change the shape of your day.

60

:

I love this principle.

61

:

A day is like a little

mini clip of your life.

62

:

And we can change our life by

changing what we do each day.

63

:

Our days and our lives

are literally linked.

64

:

Now.

65

:

You have to take a leap with me here.

66

:

For a moment.

67

:

I want you to think about

each individual day.

68

:

Like it has the seasons of a year.

69

:

You go to bed in the winter when it's

dark, get up in the light or spring.

70

:

We work during the day or summer,

we slow down in the fall or evening.

71

:

And then we start the

cycle all over again.

72

:

Each day is like a mini year

in relation to the light.

73

:

Now, with this image in mind,

think about each season being

74

:

represented by part of the day.

75

:

Spring is morning.

76

:

Summer is daytime fall as the evening.

77

:

And winter is night.

78

:

So here we are in late winter.

79

:

What time of day is that?

80

:

We are in the pre-dawn

hours of the morning.

81

:

Right?

82

:

This is one of my favorite

times of the whole day.

83

:

I love it when I start waking

up, but I'm not quite there yet.

84

:

And I get to roll over and snuggle

into the covers a little longer.

85

:

But it's more than just

getting that additional sleep.

86

:

I call this the time

of magical inspiration.

87

:

I don't know about you, but I get

so many answers to my questions

88

:

during this time of the morning.

89

:

So often in the evenings, I will be

mulling over a question and can't seem

90

:

to come up with any kind of answer.

91

:

Then in those magical pre-dawn

hours, the answers just come to me.

92

:

Or at least I can see things in a new

light and I see more possibilities.

93

:

I know this is a nudge

from the holy ghost.

94

:

There are a lot of things that

happen physiologically in the

95

:

body that could explain why we

think clearer in the mornings.

96

:

But God works in mysterious ways.

97

:

Meaning in ways I can't understand.

98

:

And in my mind, I know my answers,

my inspiration or clarity of

99

:

thought come from the holy ghost.

100

:

Do you experience this?

101

:

I know other people have.

102

:

In fact, I will never forget

reading a story about president

103

:

Hinckley that shows this exactly.

104

:

I'm going to quote this from an LDS

living article, entitled the revelation

105

:

that became the Hong Kong temple.

106

:

It says, quote.

107

:

When president Hinckley traveled

to Hong Kong in:

108

:

potential temple sites, he felt

unsatisfied with all of them.

109

:

We looked at one after

another, after another.

110

:

I became very discouraged.

111

:

He later said, The sites were so tiny in

some respects and the cost of real estate.

112

:

So high.

113

:

Many millions of dollars for

a little piece of ground.

114

:

One night, he retired with no clear

understanding of how he could proceed on

115

:

this assignment to find a temple location.

116

:

But in the middle of the night,

he woke with an inspiration.

117

:

Something very interesting.

118

:

Came to my mind.

119

:

He recorded.

120

:

I did not hear a voice with my

natural ears, but in my mind

121

:

there came a voice of the spirit.

122

:

It said.

123

:

Why are you worried about this?

124

:

You have a wonderful piece

of property where the mission

125

:

home and small chapel stand.

126

:

They're in the very heart of Calloun in

the location with the best transportation.

127

:

Build a building of several stories.

128

:

It can include a chapel and

classrooms on the first two floors.

129

:

And a temple on the top

two or three floors.

130

:

I relaxed and went back

to sleep and quote.

131

:

I know here, he says

the middle of the night.

132

:

But what is the middle of the night?

133

:

Really?

134

:

The early morning, the pre-dawn.

135

:

If we put this magical time and

perspective with the year, it's where

136

:

we are right now in late winter, right

before the light of spring or morning.

137

:

Late winter has the potential to

be a magical time of inspiration.

138

:

Are you following me here?

139

:

I hope so.

140

:

If a day resembles the seasons of a

year, that the year resembles a day.

141

:

I know for some people,

this idea is stretching it.

142

:

May being more imagination than you like

to engage, but if you can see it, if you

143

:

can relate to it, then it's beautiful.

144

:

Here's my recommendation.

145

:

I don't hurry through late winter.

146

:

Linger there.

147

:

I know spring is taunting and tempting

you, and it would be easier to rush

148

:

through the season or wish it away.

149

:

But that would be a waste of

such a beautiful glorious time.

150

:

Some people call this

time of year, the womb.

151

:

Being in the womb.

152

:

I like to think of it as a

seed planted in the fall.

153

:

It's roots growing all through winter and

before it pops its head out of the soil.

154

:

There was a pause.

155

:

That is late winter.

156

:

That is your last

snuggle under the covers.

157

:

And that is where we are right now.

158

:

The plans have been made.

159

:

The seed is ready now.

160

:

It's time for inspiration.

161

:

I can almost see it as a time for

a father's blessing, right before

162

:

a child goes out into the world.

163

:

Revel in this moment.

164

:

I don't throw it away or rush through

it, curl up and your down comforter and

165

:

hold onto it for a couple more weeks.

166

:

Spring will be here soon enough.

167

:

And besides spring is fickle.

168

:

It doesn't always come when we

expect it, leaving us disappointed.

169

:

Just stay in late winter until

spring has truly arrived.

170

:

It's so much easier.

171

:

That is my choice.

172

:

It's a small and simple step

on this life journey and I'm

173

:

going to take it deliberately.

174

:

Thank you for sharing your time with me.

175

:

If you enjoy this episode,

share it with a friend.

176

:

That's the only way

this podcast will grow.

177

:

Take loving care of yourself.

178

:

Nama stay.
