Shownotes
From 1967 to 1977, Canadian pianist Glenn Gould, created three, hourlong pieces of experimental broadcast art — a kind of abstract exploration, and musique concrete portrait of individuals, places and communities who have deliberately withdrawn from the world.
From 1967, “The Idea of North" explores Northern geography and climate and solitude. “The Latecomers," from 1969, is a study of isolation in the remote Canadian Provence of Newfoundland. And the final work, broadcast in 1977, entitled "The Quiet in the Land," is a portrait of Mennonite society.
On completion Gould collects these pieces under the title “the Solitude Trilogy.” On today’s special three hour episode, we are going to listen to all three, in their entirety.
