This isn’t your typical “goal setting” pep talk — and it’s definitely not a January 1 reset. In this powerful part two episode, Jan reframes what it means to finish strong… not from striving, but from overflow. You’ll learn how habit stacking can build the spiritual, physical, and mental foundation you need to step into 2026 already aligned with who God is calling you to be.
If you’re tired of quitting on resolutions and ready to become the woman who finishes in step with Jesus — this one’s for you.

“The way you end 2025 is the starting line you carry into 2026.”
“Habits shape who you’re becoming. Rhythms protect what you’re becoming. Rest sustains how you’re becoming.”
“God never designed your soul to carry the weight of the whole world. Ask Him what’s actually yours to carry — and let the rest go.”

🎙️ Ep. 88 – Habit Stacking to Become v2
Opening
Welcome back, friends! If you haven’t listened to last week’s episode yet — hit pause and go do that first. Because today is part two of what I consider a powerful two-part series about stepping into your next season before the calendar flips.
and strategic foundation for:
Section 1: The Real Starting Line
I want to reframe how you think about goal setting. Not just for the new year, but in general.
Here it is: The way you end this year is training your future self.
If you finish:But if you finish grounded, clear, and obedient? You’ll start from overflow. (And hey, if you want to go deeper on overflow, check out Episode 21.)
So let’s stop treating January 1 as the magical reset button. It’s just another day. The real starting line? It’s today.
I mean really, you can apply this to any time frame not just the annual one. Day, week, month, quarter, year… The principle is the same.
If you did the work from last week, you’ve already sat with the Lord and asked Him who He needs you to become in order to carry what’s ahead. Now the next step is asking: What’s necessary for me to actually become her?
Spoiler: it’s going to involve breaking some old habits and building new ones.
Section 2: Why Habits Fail
I don’t throw the word “hate” around much, but I’ll say it — I hate New Year’s resolutions. They rarely work. Researchers say only 9% of people actually complete them, while 23% quit within weeks. Why? Because resolutions rely on motivation, not integration.
📚 James Clear, in Atomic Habits, explains: The key is identity-based habits.
• Don’t say: “I want to work out more.”
Say: “I am someone who honors my body.”
• Don’t say: “I want to pray more.”
Say: “I am someone who meets with God daily.”
The way to make this practical? Habit stacking.
(And if you haven’t read Atomic Habits, go grab it. I’m re-listening right now on Audible!)
Section 3: What is Habit Stacking?
Habit stacking simply means attaching a new, identity-based habit to something you already do consistently.
Here are some examples:
• After I pour my morning coffee → I’ll pray Psalm 23 out loud.
• After I close my laptop → I’ll stretch and breathe for 2 minutes.
• After I brush my teeth → I’ll write down one thing I’m grateful for. (maybe that’s not the best example because you don’t usually keep paper or a journal in the bathroom but you get what I mean)
Your anchor is whatever you already do every single day. Those are you habits — coffee, brushing your teeth, checking your phone. Stack the new habit on top.
days left in:How cool is that?
Section 4: Build Your Protection Rhythms
So how do we make sure our habits stick? Two words: obedience and capacity.
We seem talk a lot about obedience, and it is important to be obedient to what the Lord is calling you to. But today let’s focus on capacity. Because sustainable, faith-fueled success doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from protecting your energy.
I was listening to a podcast the other day and literally had to pause it and tell Siri, “Write this down.” Psychologist Nedra Glover Tawwab said:
“Rest is not a reward for work completed. Rest is a requirement for work to be sustainable.”
WOAH! I’m going to say that again. Because my default mode is: just one more email, one more tweak, one more thing… but the list never ends. Maybe you can relate?
So here are some questions to ask yourself:
• What consistently drains me?
• What triggers my burnout?
• Do I have any actual Sabbath in my week?
Some rhythms to try:
• A true Sabbath (phone off, heart open)
• No-meeting days
• Content batching with actual margin built in
unread emails and:Recently I started using an app called Opal — it locks me out of time-wasting apps when I need focus. No more doom scrolling or getting hijacked by what my brain perceives as emergent. Praise hands.
I was talking to a friend recently about the heaviness we’re all carrying these days, and she said something that I’d not really heard put this way: “God never designed our minds and souls to carry the weight of the whole world.” Wow. No wonder we’re exhausted and anxious all the time. That is exactly what we’re doing through constant news and content consumption. I’m not saying we should bury our heads in the sand. But we’ve got to be wise! Ask Him what’s actually ours to carry and let the rest go.
This isn’t about restriction. It’s about sustainability.
Section 5: Tie It All Together
So how does this all connect — habits, rhythms, distractions, rest?
Here’s the bridge: Habits shape who you’re becoming. Rhythms protect what you’re becoming. And rest sustains how you’re becoming.
Without habits, you’ll drift. Without rhythms, you’ll burn out. Without rest, you’ll collapse.
That’s why this matters so much. Because you’re not just setting goals — you’re forming identity. You’re stacking micro-habits, protecting your energy, and anchoring yourself in Christ so that when you turn the planner to a new day or the calendar to a new month or year, you’re not scrambling to catch up. You’re already aligned and equipped.
Section 6: Closing Encouragement
Friend, please remember this. You are in the process of becoming.
And the more you honor that process now — the more aligned, equipped, and peaceful you’ll be in as you move forward into what God has for you next.
Build identity evidence.
Vote every day for the woman you are becoming.
You are the kind of woman who protects her peace.
You are the kind of woman who builds from obedience, not exhaustion.
You are the kind of woman who finishes in step with Jesus.
So let’s walk it out together.
Until next week, keep becoming. And walk it out as her.
