me here each week to find out how. Today I'd like to tell you a story. It's about one of the most important things to do before
-:
01:14
you decide to go alcohol free or drink less for a while. It is to get absolutely clear on your reasons why you want this.
-:
01:22
It's important because in those moments when you doubt yourself you've got some ideas to go back to and to reassure yourself
-:
01:30
that you've made the right choice. I'll tell you some of my reasons I chose to do my alcohol free life experiment in a moment,
-:
01:38
but first a tip for you. Once I'd got all the reasons why I wanted to go alcohol free for a while straight in my head, I wrote
-:
01:47
them down. I saved them in various places. I put them in the front of my diary. I put them inside the kitchen cupboard door.
-:
01:57
I put them on a bookmark, and I took a photo of that list and I saved it into my favourite photos. I also put it in a Trello
-:
02:05
board and on Evernote, but you can use whatever apps serve you for this purpose. I also recorded a voice note of myself reading
-:
02:15
it out loud to act as my own audio record to listen to in moments of panic. Having my reasons why noted in various places
-:
02:22
meant that when I felt like I might be tempted to have a drink, I could find them easily and use them as a tool to dissuade
-:
02:33
myself from any rubbish choice I was about to make. On to my reasons why I decided to go alcohol free for a while. I just
-:
02:44
knew that there was something more I could do in my life. I was doing all sorts of things that I knew to be good for either
-:
02:54
my mind, body, or soul. I was running. I was doing some yoga. I was drinking green smoothies. I was taking vitamins. I was
-:
03:03
meditating. I was journaling. But for a long, long time, it didn't occur to me that if I just stopped doing one thing, it
-:
03:12
would make a massive difference, and that one thing I decided to stop for a while was drinking alcohol. I wanted to know if
-:
03:21
life would be stressful, lonely, or boring without alcohol like I'd led myself to believe, or if it was possible, to relax,
-:
03:29
connect with others and have fun without a drink like I suspected it could be. The hangovers and brain fog were getting worse.
-:
03:36
In my late thirties I just couldn't get away with it like I had done in my twenties. I wanted to be a more patient parent,
-:
03:44
no more selfishly rushing the kids through bedtime because I wanted to get back downstairs to my drink. I wanted hangover
-:
03:53
free weekends to actually enjoy my time away from work. I wanted to maximize my nutritional choices. No more rubbish food
-:
04:02
choices dictated by brain fog or horrible hangovers. I wanted to sleep deeply and wake up feeling fabulous. I wanted to know
-:
04:10
I was giving myself the best chance at not getting high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, breast, mouth, throat,
-:
04:19
liver, or colon cancer, dementia, or in any other way compromising my immune system. Once I'd got all these reasons why I
-:
04:26
wanted to try an alcohol free life for a while, it was time to decide when was going to be the best time to commit to it.
-:
04:33
Thank you for listening today, and please listen in again next time to find out about how I made the commitment to my alcohol
-:
04:43
free experiment. It would make me happier than a Buddhist monk if you would 5 star review my podcast on whatever platform
-:
04:53
you listen. Please imagine it like tasting notes on the finest wine I'm never going to drink. Thank you, and PS, I believe in you.
