Tara was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and is of Jamaican/Haitian heritage.

She began singing at the age of 3 and has had a passion for it ever since. As a child, Tara was immersed in music through singing and piano lessons and studied dance as well as various sports.

With such strong taking to music and after competing in local events and attending and graduating from Berklee College Of Music with honors, she knew she was meant to pursue a career in creating music and storytelling.

Favourite credits include Merritt, Sterling, and Evie award-winning performances as Celie in The Color Purple (Neptune, Citadel/RMTC), Hadestown (Citadel), The Invisible (Catalyst Theatre), Brave Girl (Lunchbox).

Tara and her co-creator, Masini McDermott, launched a virtual platform “Musical Tokens” (musicaltokens.com) with hopes of connecting women of color in the musical theatre industry.

They’ve also started an unfiltered podcast, “Straight Up, Sis!

“I’ve been fortunate enough to perform all across Canada and am proud to be a Black woman who inspires others to speak their truths and create and share their art with whoever will receive it.” - Tara Jackson
