Shownotes

My journey to becoming an online business attorney wasn't something that happened overnight. I didn't wake up one morning and decide to be an online business attorney. I started my career as an attorney on a more traditional path.

However, circumstances lined up, and one thing led to another, and I realized that becoming an online attorney was my calling, this is what I had to do.

training and strategy for online businesses, coaches and entrepreneurs.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I'm your host, Mariam Tsaturyan.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Welcome.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Hello.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Hello.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So I've decided to do things a little bit differently to shake things up,

Mariam Tsaturyan:

and I've realized that I haven't really introduced myself to you in all this time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

You've been listening to these episodes.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Hopefully you have been finding them helpful for your businesses.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So I wanted to connect with you better today.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I wanted to give you a little bit of background as to who I am, how I

Mariam Tsaturyan:

came to be how what I do today came to be, and the main reason for that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I hope you'll enjoy the episode, and if you do, please don't forget to give me

Mariam Tsaturyan:

a follow and leave a review if you have.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

A quick minute, so let's get started.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

As I've talked about the fact that I'm actually an attorney many times during

Mariam Tsaturyan:

this episodes, just because I have to do my legal disclaimer all the time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But this journey as attorney for online entrepreneurs didn't start out

Mariam Tsaturyan:

from the fact that I was an attorney.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So several years ago I believe it was maybe 2017 my husband

Mariam Tsaturyan:

applied for his medical residency.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

He's a physician, and we got the results that he matched in Washington State

Mariam Tsaturyan:

in this county called Yakima County.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

For those of you who don't know about Yakima it's took quite

Mariam Tsaturyan:

little place, a very agricultural farming and, growing trees.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Delicious apples and peaches and cherries, like all that good stuff.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But we had to move, we had to move to a new state from California for three

Mariam Tsaturyan:

years we had to move to Washington State.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

We didn't have anyone there.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

We didn't know anyone in that state.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

You can say it was a little bit of an adjustment for all

Mariam Tsaturyan:

of us, but we moved there.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

After three months or so, we adjusted and we actually fell in love with the place.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

We bought ourselves a little house.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Everything was great.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

My husband and I looked for an office space for me, and I opened up my law firm.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

While we were there, I found the babysitter who was caring for my kid.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Thankfully, everything seemed to work out for a little while.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Unfortunately it didn't last long.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I say unfortunately, but I think it was fortunate because it actually

Mariam Tsaturyan:

set me on the path that I am now.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And I believe I was always called to do this.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

This was always going to be part of my journey.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I just didn't know that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And circumstances made it so that it was impossible for me not to do it.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So as I was practicing in Washington state I realized that I was spending

Mariam Tsaturyan:

a lot of time apart from my child.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

He was barely two years old at the time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Oh no, I'm sorry.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

He was not even two years old.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

He was barely a year old at the time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And I was spending all my time at the office.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I would come home constantly worried about him because the

Mariam Tsaturyan:

babysitter we hired obviously was somebody that we didn't know.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

We did our best to background check and everything.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But at the end of the day, when you have a child and for those of you who have

Mariam Tsaturyan:

a child will probably relate to this, you can never trust somebody too much.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

You can, no matter who that person is, you always have this fear in the back

Mariam Tsaturyan:

of your mind that somehow they might not take care of your kid properly or

Mariam Tsaturyan:

they might do something to hurt them.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So you always like in this constant state of worry, at least I was.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And it came to a point where my husband and I sat down and we've decided

Mariam Tsaturyan:

that this wasn't working anymore.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I needed to be with my kid.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

He only goes through that age once and those years were going to pass by so

Mariam Tsaturyan:

quickly and I could always rebuild my practice if need be at a later time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

It definitely was not an easy decision but it was one that was

Mariam Tsaturyan:

important for our family at the time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So I closed shop basically.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I closed my law practice at the time, closed my office down

Mariam Tsaturyan:

and became a stay-at-home mom.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I loved it because obviously I was spending a lot of time with my child,

Mariam Tsaturyan:

but I was bored out of my mind.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

One, because there was nobody in that state that I knew and I could talk to

Mariam Tsaturyan:

at least to spend some time with two, because up to that point, I have always

Mariam Tsaturyan:

been a person who worked throughout college, throughout law school.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I have always worked, so it was a little.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Weird or and unusual for me to be home.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And the only thing I had to do was be a housewife and a mom.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I love that, but I needed a little bit more.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So in order for me to, not to go start crazy at the time

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I've decided to start a blog.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I was familiar with blogging just because I've done it long time

Mariam Tsaturyan:

ago while I was in high school.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

It was something that I've done at the time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I've decided to start a blog.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I've researched what were people talking about?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

What were some topics that people were talking about and interested?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And I came across a lot of mom blogs at the time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Moms talking about their lives with their children, like posting

Mariam Tsaturyan:

photos sometimes doing affiliate marketing by writing articles,

Mariam Tsaturyan:

recommending products and services.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So I figured, hey, why not?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

All I do nowadays is mommying, right?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I'm a mom and I'm not doing anything outside of this, so

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I might as well start a mom.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And I think I'm trying to remember the name of the mom blog I started

Mariam Tsaturyan:

and I can't, it's not something about mommy being right.com or I

Mariam Tsaturyan:

don't know, I hope I'll remember, probably come to me at some point.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But I started a mom blog.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

It didn't take long for that to fail just because I realized.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

What I was talking about wasn't something that I was excited about.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I started sprinkling that mom block with a few things here and there.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

In my about section, I talked about the fact that I was a full-time

Mariam Tsaturyan:

attorney, turn stay at home mom, and then something magical happened.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I had people reaching out to me via.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

On that blog or in a comment section and asking me questions about legal topics

Mariam Tsaturyan:

when it comes to blogging, when it comes to online businesses in general.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And I'll be honest, sometimes I knew the answers and sometimes I didn't.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But what I did know was where to look for those responses, how to get to the answer,

Mariam Tsaturyan:

just because of your critical analysis and critical thinking and knowing the

Mariam Tsaturyan:

law and researching law and all of that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So little by little, more and more people started asking me legal

Mariam Tsaturyan:

questions, and then I would get comments such as, what are you doing?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Talking about mom topics or creating a mom blog when so many of us need an attorney

Mariam Tsaturyan:

in this space to tell us how to run our businesses, how to protect our businesses.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So that got me thinking.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And I started researching.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I realized that what they said was true.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

There are a lot of business attorneys out there, but majority of those

Mariam Tsaturyan:

business attorneys concentrate on traditional businesses.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Brick and mortar type of businesses where you have a physical location

Mariam Tsaturyan:

where you know, maybe you need some kind of a permit or a license to start

Mariam Tsaturyan:

doing your business and all of that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

However, there was a huge shortage for attorneys who were knowledgeable

Mariam Tsaturyan:

about online businesses.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So that one thing led to another.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I started researching.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I started actively learning and I started experimenting on my own

Mariam Tsaturyan:

websites, on my own online businesses.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And little by little I realized that, hey, I have become an

Mariam Tsaturyan:

actual online business attorney.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I knew more about online businesses at that point and how to keep it

Mariam Tsaturyan:

legit, how to make sure they were legally protected than I knew about

Mariam Tsaturyan:

any other legal topic trust me.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I know a lot about other topics, but online business was something that I

Mariam Tsaturyan:

became very passionate about very quickly.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So I just, del.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Into that topic headfirst.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And I never quite recovered from that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I'm still in that mode.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I love online businesses because I believe this change from

Mariam Tsaturyan:

traditional businesses to this more hybrid or online only businesses

Mariam Tsaturyan:

gave a lot of people opportunities that they didn't have before.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

They.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

People such as stay-at-home moms, for example, for one thing to be able

Mariam Tsaturyan:

to start and run their businesses from the comfort of their own homes.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

They gave professionals who had day jobs, but maybe dreamt about quitting those day

Mariam Tsaturyan:

jobs one day and following their passion, they gave those people the opportunity to

Mariam Tsaturyan:

start that business on a side and grow it and scale it, and then one day quit that

Mariam Tsaturyan:

day drop that they were miserable at.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And so online.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Is definitely something that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Speaks to me.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

It is a passion of mine and personally, I have two online

Mariam Tsaturyan:

businesses outside of my law firm.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So if you count my law firm, it's three.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And my law firm, by the way, is completely virtual too.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I do have an address, a physical address, and if somebody wants to meet with

Mariam Tsaturyan:

me in person, I can make that happen.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But my preference is to just keep everything virtual because it's much

Mariam Tsaturyan:

easier to work with somebody virtually.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And besides my clients are all over the world, all over the United

Mariam Tsaturyan:

States and the world, so it's easier, obviously, and almost a requirement

Mariam Tsaturyan:

to meet with them virtually.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I went all in on this virtual workspace idea way before Covid hit.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So to be honest with you, when Covid.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Everything's shutting down and all of that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

It didn't really affect me too much because I was already

Mariam Tsaturyan:

completely online and virtual.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So my work just continued as it was before.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Now throughout this like process and stages of me researching and learning

Mariam Tsaturyan:

the law and trying to figure out how to protect this online businesses, or

Mariam Tsaturyan:

what were some things that set online businesses apart from traditional

Mariam Tsaturyan:

businesses, I've realized that I should create my own website and

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I should concentrate on talking about online businesses strict.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So that led me to start my website.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

At the time it was called Freelance and marketing.com.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Horrible name, horrible url.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I will never forgive myself for picking that, it was the first

Mariam Tsaturyan:

thing that came to mind and I picked that and I rolled with that.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I just wanted to get.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Started now it's called maryam saurian.com.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I have recently rebranded because my business is shifting a lot.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

There's all these amazing things that are happening and I'll

Mariam Tsaturyan:

share them with you later on.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But I started a website and obviously it had a blog component

Mariam Tsaturyan:

to that, and I started talking.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

All kinds of legal topics that were relevant for online businesses, for

Mariam Tsaturyan:

entrepreneurs, for coaches and little by little it took a life of its own.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I started making connections with some strategic people in the industry.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

They were bloggers, they were coaches, e-commerce owners who had audiences.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And as a result, what ended up happening is, This people started recommending

Mariam Tsaturyan:

my information, my blog posts to their audiences in their Facebook group

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Facebook groups in their memberships.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So whenever somebody needed actual information on a particular

Mariam Tsaturyan:

topic, if I had a blog post on it, they would come and read it.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

If I didn't have a blog post on that topic, I would get an email

Mariam Tsaturyan:

from them asking me to create one on that particular topic.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So little by little I developed a reputation in this space.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Then the next natural progression, came to my legal contract templates.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

At the time I didn't have my shop, I believe this is back in 2018 I started

Mariam Tsaturyan:

getting inquiries from my audience Miriam, can you create a privacy policy?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Or Miriam, we found this online, but I don't know if it's a good one to use.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I use this generator, or I copy and pasted somebody else's privacy policy.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Can you see if I can use that?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Immediately.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

This is a no, you cannot copy paste somebody else's privacy policy to

Mariam Tsaturyan:

use a copyright infringement on top of not knowing whether that

Mariam Tsaturyan:

privacy policy is good or not.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But this is how it all came about.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

They started wanting contracts, policies more advanced things such as collaboration

Mariam Tsaturyan:

agreements, NDAs, and whatnot.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

My blogging.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

In the online business space, led my audience to ask for contract.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I ended up creating an entire shop full of contract and policy templates.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I opened it up to the public, to the audience, and as they

Mariam Tsaturyan:

say, the rest is history.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

This is how my journey has begun in this online.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Fast forward now several years later.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I have several online courses.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I have a shop full of digital products contracts and policies, and I still

Mariam Tsaturyan:

have my website full of a lot of block posts that I keep adding

Mariam Tsaturyan:

onto on hopefully after this point.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

To be really frank with you, I took about a year and a half of break from this part.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Portion of my business, everything was still there for everyone.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

People could buy the contracts and they did, but I didn't actively promote

Mariam Tsaturyan:

it, market it or create anything new for it because for the past, like

Mariam Tsaturyan:

two years or so, I was heavily cons.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And trading on building up my law firm side of the business.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And now that I feel like my law firm's okay, it's doing well on its own.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I don't need to constantly feed it.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I, it obviously requires attention, but it's not the same

Mariam Tsaturyan:

as when I was just starting out.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So it's doing okay now on its own.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I figured it's good time for me to go back and concentrate.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Business, this is when that shift happened.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I decided I have let things go for quite some time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Sometimes no change is not a good thing.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Sometimes you need change.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

You need shift in direction.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

And that happened because when I started primarily in the beginning of my

Mariam Tsaturyan:

journey, my audience was predominantly composed of beginner blogger.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

However, in the recent years there was a shift, especially because of my law

Mariam Tsaturyan:

firm, because my law firm concentrated on helping six to seven figure coaches

Mariam Tsaturyan:

con course creators and entrepreneurs.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Because of that, the audience that started coming into my, this online

Mariam Tsaturyan:

business space were also the same people that were coming to my law firm.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So my this one right now that I've rebranded and instead of

Mariam Tsaturyan:

freelance and marketing.com, it became maryam saurian.com.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

My audience for that has started getting more and more, six to seven figure

Mariam Tsaturyan:

coaches, consultant course creators.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So I, I figured it's time I start creating products and services for that audience

Mariam Tsaturyan:

as well, because what I have up to.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Served well for beginners beginner bloggers, beginner online business owners

Mariam Tsaturyan:

beginner e-commerce business owners.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

But right now, the shift is that I'm trying to create content for my current

Mariam Tsaturyan:

audience, which is I would say about 70.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

5% comprised of coaches, course creators and consultants who are

Mariam Tsaturyan:

in multi six to seven figure range.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So this is where the shift for my business came about that right

Mariam Tsaturyan:

now, that's what I'm working on.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

In fact, my website is being rebuilt.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

It's being redesigned.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

My products are getting.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Facelift they're being updated.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

The policy are being kept up to date at all times.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So with that said I am basically moving in a completely new direction and I'm

Mariam Tsaturyan:

excited to see where this is heading.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I should have something really exciting to share with you in about a month and a.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Time.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I won't say much about that right now, but in about a month and a half

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I'll share something amazing with you.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So yeah this is me, basically, this is how I came to be.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

This is how my online business was born.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

This is how I started working with online businesses, entrepreneurs providing the

Mariam Tsaturyan:

services that I provide pro offering them the digital products that I created.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So that was the beginning of my journey.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

That was how I started, but that's not where I'm going.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I'm definitely going up and I hope you're coming with me.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So I wanna hear from you.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I'd love it if you sent me an email.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Miriam derian.com or when you go to the website of my podcast when

Mariam Tsaturyan:

you click on a link, you'll see that there is a comment section.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

You're welcome to leave me comments as well.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I wanna hear from you.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I wanna hear how you started in your journey into this.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Space.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

What prompted you to take that first step and actually start on your business?

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Create something out of thin air, basically.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

So tell me a little about you.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

I really wanna connect and I wanna know my audience as much as possible.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

Great talking to you.

Mariam Tsaturyan:

As always, I'll talk to you in a couple of days.
