[Music] tired of the same old same old at business events well this is not the same as last year the
0:14
podcast where we blow up the boring and lead the charge into the attendee first era of business
0:20
events I'm Clare Forestier a business event Emcee obsessed with transforming audiences from passive
0:27
observers into Dynamic participants at events each week we'll challenge the conventions share
0:34
actionable tips and hear from fellow event Rebels who are mastering the engagement game
0:40
imagine your attendees begging for more after your next event that's the magic of prioritising
0:46
their experience ready to ditch the dull and create corporate events your audiences will
0:52
Rave about then you found your tribe join the movement welcome to not the same as last year
1:02
hi and welcome back to not the same as last year I'm your host Clare Forestier I'm a professional
1:08
business event Emcee and today we're diving into a topic that is absolutely crucial for any
1:14
successful event the power of a clear objective now many of you might be thinking well isn't
1:20
that obvious well you would be surprised because sometimes even with all the planning and effort
1:27
events fall flat if there is no no clear understanding of what we all actually want
1:33
to achieve so this episode today is inspired by a couple of things first of all as an Emcee myself
1:41
I have seen firsthand how unclear objectives mean that the needs of the attendee are not a
1:47
priority and the events fail now you might think surely there are KPIs and goals and objectives in
1:56
business events well yeah but I can't tell you how often my question to planners which is what
2:04
do you want your attendees to do as a result of attending this event is met with a blank face and
2:11
that is a glaring sign that the objective behind the event is just not clear to those who are
2:16
actually organising it so while everyone working on the event organisers suppliers etc we all might
2:24
have ephemeral objectives like engagement fun education or whatever it's often a little bit
2:30
wooly and that makes success harder to measure and Achieve and I'd suggest it potentially sets
2:38
the team or at least certain members of it up to fail because in the absence of a clear objective
2:45
interpretations of success will vary this is the second inspiration behind this week's episode I've
2:53
heard event planners complain that one or other of their suppliers didn't do their job properly
3:00
and that's the reason that the event wasn't a great success now while I like to believe I've
3:06
done a good job at all the events I've hosted I might sometimes wonder why didn't they rebook
3:12
me this year or why was the testimonial not that great so I did a little research recently to find
3:20
out what clients say when their Emcee has failed to meet expectations now there is little data on
3:27
this actually because none of the big event Prof survey seem to ask that many questions about the
3:33
event hosts or the professional moderators but being a modern girl I thought I'll ask
3:38
artificial intelligence and the responses I got they're like this Emcee 's that got the
3:46
tone wrong Emcee 's that didn't engage with the audience those that told inappropriate jokes or
3:52
that weren't able to deal with an emergency okay fair enough I'm often Justified although not me
3:58
obviously I'm hilarious ious and I'm an absolute Tower of strength in emergencies just saying but
4:04
my point is while of course there are crappy Emcee 's and ineffective suppliers I wonder how often is
4:11
it the supplier's fault and how often is it the fact that supplier was set up to fail by a lack
4:18
of clear direction from the start I believe you are just not set up properly for Success
4:24
if you are not properly briefed on the goals and objectives for the event so let's unpack
4:30
this idea of clear objectives why are they so important well imagine you building your dream
4:37
home now you know you want somewhere nice to live and in the same way with an event you
4:42
know you want your audience to have a good time but would you just get the Carpenters to start
4:48
hammering away without a blueprint absolutely not you need a really Clear Vision of what
4:55
you want your final product to be everybody's dream home is very different from each other
5:00
and events are the same a clear objective is that blueprint it tells you what you're aiming for do
5:06
you want your attendees to walk away with a new skill a shift in their perspective A Renewed sense
5:12
of motivation once you know exactly what you want then you can make all your other decisions about
5:17
the event flow from there the content the format the speakers even your choice of Emcee and of
5:24
course this Clarity benefits everyone involved prevent planners you get the clear objective
5:29
that guides every decision you make you can then choose your content and your activities that are
5:34
laser focused on achieving your goal for suppliers like Emcees, AV whoever with a clear objective we
5:43
know exactly what role we need to play we can tailor our approach adjust our tone ensure the
5:49
audience is engaged in a way that moves the needle towards your objective and for attendees really
5:56
clear objectives translate into a more relevant and engaging experience the content you present
6:02
the discussions you have everything aligns with what your attendees are there to get out of the
6:07
event okay so how do you actually Define a clear objective well remember that question I asked what
6:14
do you want your attendees to do after the event that is actually a pretty powerful way to get you
6:20
started because it attributes an action that can be measured so do you want your attendees
6:27
to implement a new strategy in the workplace change your behaviour in their daily lives
6:33
buy your product become an ambassador for your organisation make a donation make an investment
6:39
what by focusing on the what getting the desired action you are then going to be well on your way
6:46
to crafting a clear objective that you can then share with the entire event team to ensure that
6:52
every decision and investment aligns to the goal for example if you want them to implement a new
6:58
strategy you your objective might be increase attendee confidence in implementing new marketing
7:04
strategies by 20% after the event then you work out how you going to achieve that you've got
7:10
this super clear objective you then make sure everyone involved in the event from planning
7:16
team to suppliers to speakers and panelists knows it and understands how their role fits
7:22
in and if necessary how it will be measured I don't think you need to say that to your
7:26
panelist but definitely to your suppliers then of course this is fed into your event design every
7:32
investment decision that you make the content how it's delivered everything it's going to make
7:38
sure that that is effective and then the event is effective so you think will this hire this
7:44
purchase this event Tech investment this speaker impact the experience of our attendee in a way
7:51
that produces the emotions we want to ensure that they are impelled to the action we've decided in
7:56
our objective if we need engagement to get them to do what we want which short answer you always
8:02
will shall we do what we've always done or shall we change things to move the needle faster will
8:09
shoving in acres of content grabbing for shiny things like apps and led walls and celebrity
8:15
speakers get our attendees to do what we want maybe or do we need to be more intentional reduce
8:22
the session times reduce the number of sessions increase the breaks hire an amazing Emcee and
8:28
design and agenda of collaborative workshops and facilitated networking to get our attendees to
8:33
do what we want could be that too nine out of 10 times the way you've always done it is not going
8:39
to give you your objective and spoiler alert the fastest most effective way to get people
8:45
to do what you want is to give them what they want you need to build an event that makes them
8:51
feel heard and valued and inspired so I promise I won't do this often but I want you to do some
8:59
homework it won't take long think about your next event do you have a clear objective in
9:05
mind and I don't just mean everyone have a great time and leave thinking we're brilliant if not
9:11
grab a pen and paper and get these creative juices flowing figure it out remember a clear
9:17
objective isn't just a nice to have it is the foundation for an event that truly will deliver
9:23
impact it is going to ensure that your attendees leave feeling empowered and equipped to achieve
9:29
the outcome you desire so take action define your objective and watch your event reach new
