Queer people and queer identities are drawn to the furry community for any number of reasons,
Speaker:
00:00:35
but at the bottom of them is this.
Speaker:
00:00:38
The furry community, the whole subculture,
Speaker:
00:00:40
is based on a lifelong exercise in self-definition.
Speaker:
00:00:45
We say “I am a tiger”
Speaker:
00:00:46
or “I am a badger”
Speaker:
00:00:48
or “I am a dog” and our friends accept it.
Speaker:
00:00:53
And all LGBTQ+ rights are founded on the right
Speaker:
00:00:58
to self-definition,
Speaker:
00:01:00
that nobody may decide who I love,
Speaker:
00:01:03
who I am, what I am,
Speaker:
00:01:05
but me. Read by B.P. Rugger,
Speaker:
00:01:10
the ineffable Moo-Moon.

00:01:11
Please enjoy “Fair and square”
Speaker:
00:01:15
a poem by Madison Scott-Clary
Speaker:
00:01:20
I bought my name fair and square;
Speaker:
00:01:23
Bespoke, built from whole cloth.
Speaker:
00:01:27
I wrote it again
Speaker:
00:01:29
and again, Savoring every J,
Speaker:
00:01:32
Skipping every fifth tittle, Until it felt right,
Speaker:
00:01:37
Like sitting inside and watching the snow fall Through the window
Speaker:
00:01:42
Or finding the perfect way that branches in two trees Line up with each other
Speaker:
00:01:48
Or when the windshield wipers move In time with your music.
Speaker:
00:01:54
I built myself fair and square With hands raw from coarse identity.
Speaker:
00:02:00
I kneaded and pressed
Speaker:
00:02:02
and squeezed, Savoring every curve,
Speaker:
00:02:06
Skipping every tenth day,
Speaker:
00:02:08
Until it all felt right,
Speaker:
00:02:11
Like the sweet smell of
Speaker:
00:02:13
pine bark Rubbed between fingers
Speaker:
00:02:16
Or the whisper of maple leaves Under hurrying paws
Speaker:
00:02:20
Or the perfect overlap
Speaker:
00:02:22
of new buds Already sticky
Speaker:
00:02:24
with sap. This was “Fair and square”
Speaker:
00:02:32
by Madison Scott-Clary,
Speaker:
00:02:34
read for you by B.P. Rugger,
Speaker:
00:02:35
the ineffable Moo-Moon.
