Episode 205 - Prairie Winds: On Set Interviews with Executive Producer and Crew
In this episode of the Faith and Family Filmmakers Podcast, your host Geoffrey Whitt, who also filled the role of Production Sound Mixer on the film, conducts several short interviews as the filming of Prairie Winds comes to a close. Executive Producer Hank Erwin describes how he got involved and urged the team to put “heart and soul” into their filmmaking. Erwin recounts advising sons Andy and John Erwin to avoid “cheap and cheesy” Christian films, noting their later awards and projects like I Can Only Imagine II and House of David. The episode also features Colby Robison on serving as B-cam operator, plus his mother Claudia and sister Shalina - working on set as a family in multiple departments. Lead costumer Lottie Brown and hair/makeup head Julia Swarms describe the fun and challenges of working on a 1870s period film, while interviewing in Johnny Cash’s 1830s log house.

Hey, we're back again with the executive producer of Prairie Winds, Hank Erwin.
Speaker:Hank, it's been a pleasure having you around set this week.
Hank:Oh, what a joy to come out and watch everybody work on a project.
Hank:You know, this is a dream that's been going on for about two or three years-
Geoff:Uh-huh
Geoff:… Hank: with George Escobar- Yeah
Geoff:writing the script.
Geoff:Mm-hmm.
Hank:And then working to get it, uh, in place that you guys and all of us
Hank:could start working and filming this thing, actually filming this thing and
Hank:doing it in just a little over a month.
Geoff:Yes.
Hank:And it is so impressive- … watching these kids work and
Hank:the adults, everybody as a team.
Hank:And to see the dailies of what they're producing, so impressive.
Hank:Yeah.
Hank:I can't wait for it to come out.
Hank:Everybody's gonna love it.
Geoff:So tell me about how you i- initially got involved.
Hank:It's interesting, uh, Joel Bunkowski, who is the- Uh-huh … uh, key
Hank:producer, uh, is a good friend of mine.
Hank:And, uh, he approached me, I guess, about a year ago and said,
Hank:"Hey, we'd like- we're gonna try to make, uh, Prairie Winds now."
Geoff:Yes.
Hank:And, uh, y- "We want you to be the pastor in the whole production."
Geoff:Mm-hmm.
Hank:And I said, "Joel, I, I'm humbled and, uh, and flattered,
Hank:but I'm not an actor." "You need an actor." And, uh, he said, "Well, you
Hank:know, please." And I said, "I can't.
Hank:I've got- I'm working on The Great American Prayer
Hank:Revival-" Mm-hmm … GAP26.
Hank:Mm-hmm.
Hank:I got my hands full.
Hank:I just can't do it.
Hank:But anything I can do to help, I will be delighted to do it.
Hank:So, uh, I became the executive producer.
Geoff:Yeah.
Hank:And we got a great actor that's playing the pastor.
Geoff:Yes.
Hank:And, uh, he has done an excellent job.
Hank:Yeah.
Hank:And I think they hit a home run.
Geoff:Greg Martin.
Hank:Greg did a- Mm-hmm … great job, and I'm so proud of him.
Hank:Yeah.
Hank:And, and this is the, the great thing, everybody played their role-
Geoff:Yes
Geoff:… Hank: and everybody brought to the screen a new something-
Geoff:Yeah
Geoff:… Hank: that's gonna make this such a special series.
Geoff:Now, I'll say, we- as we're having this conversation,
Geoff:we just finished the wrap party.
Geoff:Oh,
Hank:yeah.
Geoff:We, we just had a great meal, and, uh, some great
Geoff:speeches and all that stuff.
Geoff:You had some things to say on our very first day.
Hank:Yeah.
Geoff:Uh, two words in particular that I, I remember.
Geoff:I know you can't go all into it, but tell us- … what you s- what you had to say.
Hank:Well, I wanted to, I wanted everybody on the team to remember
Hank:just three words, heart and soul.
Geoff:Mm-hmm.
Hank:Heart and soul.
Hank:To say to everybody that's a part of the staff, the team, everybody, "No
Hank:matter what your role is, put your heart and soul into this." Mm-hmm.
Hank:This is a project we want to do to please the Lord, to glorify Jesus,
Hank:and to say to the world, "There is value in Christianity." Yeah.
Hank:"There is value in the Bible."
Hank:Yeah.
Hank:So I just, uh, said it over and over, "Heart and soul." Yeah.
Hank:"Heart and soul." And it leads me to the opportunity to say to all of your fans
Hank:that listen to your show, whatever you do in life, put your heart- Yes … and
Hank:soul in it to the glory of Jesus Christ.
Geoff:And it's not something new from you, I'm sure.
Geoff:Um, of course, we know filmmaking's not new to your family.
Hank:Yeah, with Andy and John, yeah.
Geoff:Mm-hmm.
Hank:Yeah, Andy is, uh, head of Kingdom Story Company.
Hank:We just finished, uh, with, uh, I Can Only Imagine II.
Geoff:Yes.
Hank:Uh, they just won, uh, the Caleb Award for the Film of the Year.
Geoff:Yep.
Hank:And then John is doing House of David on- Yes … television,
Hank:and he just won his Caleb Award-
Geoff:Yes … for best- Love both of them.
Geoff:Love both of them.
Geoff:Um, uh, I Can Only Imagine II- was just way beyond even the first
Geoff:one, and obviously that was very successful and, and a great movie.
Geoff:But, uh, it was so good.
Geoff:And, uh, and my wife and I are, you know, watching House of David, so
Geoff:really- Ah … really well done.
Hank:Oh, thank you so much for that.
Hank:Yeah.
Hank:I'll tell them you said that, you know?
Hank:And that was what we… When the boys started-
Geoff:Yeah
Geoff:… Hank: uh, they started when they were teenagers.
Geoff:Actually, John was 12 when he came to me and he said, "Dad, we think God's
Geoff:calling us to make motion pictures." Yeah.
Geoff:And I said, "Well, go for it. Answer the call."
Geoff:Yeah.
Hank:And but I said, "I'm gonna give you a piece of advice."
Hank:I said, "If you're gonna go into Christian motion pictures, Christian motion pictures
Hank:has a bad brand label, cheap and cheesy.
Hank:So if you're gonna do this, you can't make cheap and cheesy films.
Hank:If you're gonna do this, you've gotta use the wow factor.
Hank:So you gotta put your heart and soul in it so that when anything
Hank:goes up on that screen, people go, 'Wow, that's a Christian movie?'"
Geoff:And if anyone's doing it, they're doing it.
Hank:Yeah.
Geoff:And so congratulations to you, because I know you obviously played,
Geoff:played a part in their life and no doubt the trajectory of their careers, so.
Hank:Well, it's an honor just to s- be a dad- … and to watch them.
Hank:Uh, you know, a dad has, to me, satisfaction when you see your children
Hank:exceed what you thought they could do.
Hank:Of course.
Hank:And just to… You were… My job and my desire was to give them a
Hank:platform where they could launch from- Yeah … and really excel.
Hank:Yeah.
Hank:And I'm just so humbled to see how well they're doing and, and, uh, they've
Hank:got a lot of years ahead of them.
Hank:They're playing at the top of their game right now in the-
Geoff:Mm-hmm
Hank:in the industry, and there are great films that are coming-
Hank:Yeah … that the people are gonna enjoy.
Hank:And the main, main thing we want is that when you leave that theater,
Hank:you have a love for Jesus in your heart, you have a hope for the future,
Hank:and you have that love for your grandkids that are gonna be with you.
Hank:Because when you see an Erwin film, there'll be no bad language and no
Hank:bad scenes, so enjoy the popcorn.
Geoff:Yeah.
Geoff:And of course, we're so thankful that we've also now, as a crew and cast here
Geoff:at Prairie Winds, have had the opportunity to have you kind of plant seeds into us.
Geoff:So I really appreciate that.
Hank:Well, my honor, and I'm so proud of you.
Hank:You keep up the good work.
Hank:Keep telling the story.
Hank:Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
Geoff:I'm excited now to be introducing, uh, a family.
Geoff:We've got Colby Robinson, and, uh, I'm introducing him first Colby's
Geoff:been here since the beginning of, of the shoot here on Prairie
Geoff:Winds, and Colby is B cam operator
Colby:Yes, I was.
Geoff:Okay.
Geoff:Well, first of all, uh, and I'll introduce his mom and sister in
Geoff:just a moment, tell us what you do.
Colby:So, uh, with Prairie Winds, I was the B cam operator, which,
Colby:um, basically says what it was.
Colby:I was, uh, running the, uh, B camera for Prairie Winds.
Colby:We… Typically on most, uh, films, you wanna run, like,
Colby:at least two or more cameras.
Geoff:Mm-hmm.
Colby:And each of those cameras are labeled as A, B, C, D, and so on.
Colby:Uh, so with Prairie Winds, we actually had three.
Colby:Mm-hmm.
Colby:So I was primarily running that B cam.
Colby:And most of the shots I was working with was on the, you'll see a
Colby:bunch of, like, tighter close-ups.
Colby:Mm-hmm.
Colby:Uh, a lot of the shots that are tracking.
Colby:Jeremiah, our DP, he was working a lot of the wider- Yep … shots.
Colby:So he was working with especially the t- 35 and sometimes the 50 millimeter lens.
Colby:Mm-hmm.
Colby:Man, that 85 millimeter, that was my home.
Colby:Mm. That was, that was my baby.
Colby:And, um, every so often, there were some shots I would be on an
Colby:easy rig, uh, just like Jeremiah.
Colby:Sometimes there was, like, some chaotic-type scenes, or just with
Colby:the momentum, getting as many shots as possible, we would, um, just
Colby:have it, like, handheld on the easy rig, and sometimes I'd be on the 50.
Colby:But, um, but yeah, mostly it's… You'll see those, like, tighter, like, close-ups.
Colby:And, um, yeah,
Geoff:were you primarily pulling focus yourself, or did you have, um,
Geoff:an assistant doing that in this case?
Colby:So that was a unique adventure.
Colby:I was pulling all the focus myself.
Geoff:Okay.
Colby:Uh, Jeremiah, he… because especially his setup was a lot of dolly-
Geoff:Yeah
Geoff:… Colby: and easy rig, so, and with him being the, you know, the main master
Geoff:camera, it was essential that he had his first AC pull focus for him.
Geoff:With me, because of my setup, since the majority of time I was what,
Geoff:mostly on sticks- Yeah … which is,
Geoff:you know,
Colby:the tripod.
Colby:Static.
Colby:Yeah, exactly.
Colby:Static shots.
Colby:Um, or, like, I was always within reach of where I could pull focus.
Colby:Mm-hmm.
Colby:So I just did my own focus.
Geoff:Yep.
Geoff:Cool.
Geoff:Uh, so let's go back for a second and tell us about your history with film.
Colby:Oh, man, that is… Oh, that's a whole journey in and of itself.
Colby:Yeah.
Geoff:Oh, we're, we're gonna do the short version tonight.
Geoff:Okay.
Geoff:Okay.
Geoff:Yeah.
Geoff:'Cause we, we also… I'm g- I'm gonna say this.
Geoff:Uh, I believe that your, your mother and your sister- Have had a significant,
Geoff:um, even though they haven't been here the whole time, they've been a
Geoff:significant addition to this film, so I wanna get a chance to talk to them too.
Geoff:But yeah, tell us, uh, first of all, like, let's start where you're from and your
Geoff:history with film in a minute or two.
Colby:Well, me as well as the rest of the family- Uh-huh … we're from a, uh, we're
Colby:from an hour up north of Atlanta, and, uh, I've basically been there my entire life.
Geoff:Mm-hmm.
Colby:Born and raised there, and
Colby:loving Christian family.
Colby:And, um, and my dad, he was a, uh, chaplain in the military for
Colby:27, 27 years, so, uh, I was very familiar with, um, you know, with
Colby:Christianity and faith and all that.
Colby:And, um, and my earliest years of- film goes as early as, like, around third or
Colby:fifth grade, I actually was an actor.
Geoff:Okay.
Colby:And I actually was doing some of the classes and, uh, there was three
Colby:films, I don't fully remember, but they're on, they're on the archives somewhere.
Colby:Um, that I… That's it.
Colby:That was my, my early, what I like to call, like, my rosebud of, uh,
Colby:where I got started- Yeah … was, uh, doing those acting things and all.
Colby:Then fast-forward, and this is the log line version of it all, by the
Colby:time I got, especially towards high school, I wanted to be able to get
Colby:back, uh, to being on camera again.
Colby:So from that, there was that curiosity stirring me about making videos-
Colby:Mm-hmm … and, you know, building that opportunity to be on camera again.
Colby:So I started a YouTube channel, and I was really in the whole vlogging
Colby:scene throughout, especially 2017
Claudia:and '18.
Claudia:And he got really popular in our Forsyth County.
Colby:And, yes, very popular.
Colby:Uh, that was a funny, funny adventure in and of itself.
Colby:so from that, I ended up, uh, running to an online Christian film
Colby:academy called Tomorrow's Filmmakers after searching on YouTube for
Colby:different, ways to learn about film.
Colby:I took that course, then I actually got to meet, uh, the founder, Justin
Colby:McCranie, at a homeschool conference, and he told me about Bob Jones University.
Geoff:Right.
Colby:And I went there for two of the summer camps because
Colby:they have a cinema, edu-camp.
Colby:And shout out to, uh, Mr. Z. That's, uh, Christopher Zadowitz.
Colby:He's the, uh, professor there that he, alongside many of my
Colby:friends, we all s- a lot of us, uh, started at that summer camp.
Colby:Uh, and then, and then I was at, Bob Jones for freshman year for, uh, for a year.
Colby:And then, um, there was, there was an opportunity where God told me that it
Colby:was time for me to come home early, and I wasn't sure, you know, what exactly
Colby:He had for me, what the next steps were.
Colby:But I knew, I knew that He had something in store.
Geoff:Yeah.
Colby:And so after, um, hearing and taking that leap of faith, that's when
Colby:the film journey really began, and that's where all the projects that I've been
Colby:able to be a part of and have been blessed to work on, that's where, uh, yeah,
Colby:that's where it all just continued on.
Geoff:Cool.
Geoff:And so, uh, we've got a f- whole family here right now.
Geoff:I shouldn't say a whole family.
Geoff:Perhaps, uh- Half.
Geoff:Half family.
Geoff:He, he… Yes.
Geoff:Claudia, um, perhaps you can tell us, first of all, about
Geoff:the rest of your family.
Geoff:Uh, and before we move on,
Claudia:My family, my wonderful family I've been blessed with.
Claudia:Um, my husband, as Colby was saying, was military chaplain for almost
Claudia:three decades, and, uh, he retired, became a special needs teacher.
Claudia:Our second son, Nolan, is Down syndrome and extremely funny.
Claudia:He's also very, very, very creative.
Geoff:I've heard some stories this week.
Claudia:Oh my gosh, he's hilarious.
Claudia:He is awesome.
Claudia:He's hilarious.
Claudia:And then, um, then there's Landon.
Claudia:He's our fine tech guy in college at KSU, so doing very well, so
Claudia:we're really proud of him, too.
Claudia:And of course, my beautiful Shalena right here.
Claudia:She's 16 and just decided to start dabbling in the, uh, in the film, too.
Claudia:The film bug bit her, too.
Claudia:So here she is.
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:So tell us how you ended up here.
Claudia:Here?
Claudia:I wasn't supposed to come at all.
Claudia:Uh-huh.
Claudia:'Cause Colby only ke- going to Tennessee, and then one morning he calls, he says,
Claudia:"Mommy, they're needing help." And I'm like, "Ooh, I, okay, uh, maybe." You know?
Claudia:And next thing I know, Donna's calling me, and I put her on speakerphone, and
Claudia:my husband was listening in on in, and she, he heard the, her desperation.
Geoff:Did you know her before then?
Claudia:No, I'd never, I'd never met her before.
Geoff:Okay.
Claudia:So, uh, she was extremely nice, but, uh, they were needing
Claudia:help, the art department, catering department, and wardrobe department.
Claudia:So my husband's like, "Pack up your bags and go now." Uh-huh.
Claudia:And I'm like, "Ooh, well, maybe." So I ended up, uh, leaving in the
Claudia:morning, and I'm an, uh, I'm a, a flight attendant for American Airlines.
Claudia:And I told Colby, "I've got three trips.
Claudia:I can't go." My husband's just like, "From Nashville, why don't you commute to
Claudia:Dallas, do your one trip, and then drop the other two?" So that's what I did.
Claudia:I dropped my other two trips, did my little trip there.
Claudia:Came back here.
Claudia:Colby picked me up from the airport and everything and, um, and took me.
Claudia:And, uh, so ever since I've just kind of been helping wherever
Claudia:I need, I was needed, you know?
Claudia:I'm just here to help, um, these wonderful filmmakers.
Claudia:I know that their goal is to bring souls to Christ through the power
Claudia:of film, and I'm just here to help in any way I, I can, you know?
Claudia:Yeah.
Claudia:Just, I just wanna help.
Geoff:Well, I know that you have indeed, both you and Shalaina, pitched right in.
Geoff:I… And have worked very hard.
Geoff:It's been obvious to everyone.
Geoff:And, um, it seems like you belong.
Geoff:Thank you.
Geoff:And then if I remember- We deeply
Shalina:appreciate that.
Geoff:If I remember correctly, um, I asked you earlier in the week and
Geoff:you said this is really the first time you've been on a set yourself.
Geoff:Is that correct?
Claudia:No.
Claudia:I've, I've been in f- in a few sets.
Claudia:See, we've co- Okay,
Geoff:so-
Claudia:Shalaina and I are, usually we PA and- Okay … usually
Claudia:are extras in films here and there.
Claudia:Not, not a whole lot.
Claudia:Very few.
Claudia:Very few, but- So
Geoff:don't count on my memory in other words.
Geoff:Yeah.
Geoff:Okay.
Claudia:No.
Claudia:It, we have been in- Well, that's cool … but it, it's…
Claudia:We love it.
Geoff:Yeah.
Claudia:It… And it's a lot of hard work, and it's just…
Claudia:It always amazes me how extremely talented everybody is, especially
Claudia:this crew and this cast is highly intendent, talented, um, hard workers.
Claudia:Uh-huh.
Claudia:Excellent work ethic.
Claudia:It's just been amazing.
Claudia:And everybody supporting each other, praying for each other.
Claudia:It has been the most amazing experience.
Claudia:I have loved every second being here.
Claudia:And it's been tough.
Claudia:Everybody's a hard worker.
Claudia:It's been really, really tough, but it's been fun.
Geoff:You guys have fit right in from the day you walked in,
Geoff:and it's obvious that it's fun.
Geoff:Um, and I think you've brought joy to this place.
Geoff:And, uh, Shalaina is, uh, well, ob- the youngest here in this room.
Geoff:Yes.
Geoff:Uh, 16, I believe.
Geoff:Tell us, Thank you … about your interest in film.
Shalina:Well, I, I feel like God has rooted a really deep,
Shalina:deep passion for acting.
Shalina:So I kinda just have been going around with Colby on the sets that he goes on
Shalina:and just having the pleasure of meeting people and really experiencing it.
Shalina:Firsthand and experiencing different ways, like actors get into, like into
Shalina:their zone, like how they get prepared for the scenes, while also… I also just
Shalina:help out however I can and serve, serve however way I can be the most beneficial,
Shalina:and that's just… It's just, it's so fun getting to meet so many new people
Shalina:and getting to know the stories and the testimonies of so many amazing people.
Shalina:So it's just been such a blessing to be able to be on all these sets,
Shalina:and hopefully one day acting in one.
Geoff:Well, you've, as I said, along with your mom, you know, jumped
Geoff:right in and been very, very helpful.
Geoff:But- Thank you … uh, I believe I understand you have been studying and
Geoff:getting coaching with your acting.
Geoff:Yes,
Shalina:sir.
Claudia:A lot of it,
Shalina:yes.
Shalina:Yes, sir. My acting coach, Justin Sterner, he is amazing.
Geoff:Uh-huh.
Shalina:He's been such a blessing in my life as well, and I believe God has placed
Shalina:him in my life in such a beautiful way.
Shalina:So he's been amazing.
Shalina:And yeah, I continue… I plan on continuing, uh, my
Shalina:coaching with him for a while.
Geoff:Cool.
Geoff:Um-
Claudia:And I have to add that she is now going to be a student
Claudia:in the Storytellers Film Academy, so we're really, really excited
Claudia:about this film aca- academy that she's- Cool … gonna be part of.
Claudia:Mm.
Geoff:Very good.
Geoff:And, um, I believe from talking to Colby, you have been involved with, um,
Geoff:Christian Worldview Film Festival as well.
Geoff:I don't know if we've crossed paths there.
Geoff:Um, we were there-
Colby:So-
Geoff:Well, not this year.
Geoff:It was '26, not in '20… So we were there in '24.
Geoff:Were you there in '24?
Colby:Absolutely, I was.
Colby:You were?
Geoff:Okay, cool.
Geoff:Um, well, we, we had a table there for Faith and Family Filmmakers Association.
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:And, um, so we, we would have crossed paths.
Colby:Small world.
Geoff:Yeah.
Colby:Yeah.
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:Well, you know, I'm, I'm doing a variety of short interviews, uh, tonight
Geoff:after our, wrap party, uh, f- and, uh, been pulling little groups together.
Geoff:But I thought it would be cool to do this one as a family.
Geoff:Uh- Yeah … Thank you … a lot of different unique
Geoff:situations with people- Yeah
Geoff:just different roles.
Geoff:This one's a unique one with the family, and- Yeah.
Geoff:Yeah … uh, it's been such a pleasure having you all here.
Shalina:Um-
Geoff:Right.
Geoff:It's
Shalina:so fun getting to all do this as a family and we're all doing
Shalina:what we love and really finding our passions, like, all together as a family.
Shalina:It's just, it's been so, so wonderful.
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:God bless you.
Geoff:I know you're driving tomorrow.
Geoff:Yes, we are.
Geoff:Safe travels.
Geoff:Thank you so much.
Geoff:And I hope to see you all again.
Speaker:Well, we're back with more, of the crew tonight for Prairie Winds.
Speaker:Uh, we've just had our wrap party, and We got all kinds of music going on out
Speaker:there, and it's a really fun night, but it's been a lot of hard work, too.
Speaker:And, uh, these two people have worked hard.
Speaker:I've seen it.
Speaker:Uh, we've got Lottie Brown, who has been the lead costumer.
Speaker:And we also have Julia Swarms, who is the head of the hair and makeup department.
Speaker:so, I just want to introduce you and to get to know a little bit
Speaker:more about what you do, what you've done on Prairie Winds, and, uh, and
Speaker:let our listeners know about you.
Speaker:Hello, Lottie.
Lottie:Hi.
Speaker:Um, tell me I know with this 1870s, setting that costuming
Speaker:is a whole lot different than, you know, a modern-day drama or comedy.
Speaker:Uh, how much prior to, uh, filming were you involved in costume?
Lottie:I was hired about a week before production started,
Speaker:so- Okay
Speaker:… Lottie: not long.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:So was a lot of the collection of the costuming, uh, already
Speaker:done, or was that in your hands?
Lottie:The leads were done.
Lottie:Uh-huh.
Lottie:But all the extras, I sourced.
Lottie:Um, yeah, I think that's accurate.
Speaker:Okay.
Lottie:The, the leads were mostly done, I should say.
Lottie:There was room for a little bit of designing still, which I did, and George
Lottie:and Donna were very accepting of that, so-
Speaker:Okay
Lottie:I had a little input there.
Speaker:Good.
Speaker:I believe some costumes were even sewn on the spot.
Lottie:They were, yeah.
Lottie:That was Bernice.
Lottie:Thanks to her.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's Joel, um, Dr. Joel Brenkusky's mother- Mm-hmm … did
Speaker:a lot of that sewing.
Speaker:Um, that's cool.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, um, what about you?
Speaker:I'm guessing you carry your stuff with you.
Julia:I do.
Speaker:Hair and makeup.
Julia:Yes.
Julia:I do carry my stuff with me.
Julia:I have a kit, but also with a period piece or with any project-
Speaker:Mm-hmm
Speaker:… Julia: um, you have, you know, specialty items you have to order, as well as
Speaker:expendables, disposables, things like that to keep everything sanitary that, you
Speaker:know, you throw them away after one use.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:So, yeah.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:While we're talking to you, Julia- Uh-huh … what is unique about a period piece like
Speaker:this, uh, compared to a modern setting?
Julia:Yeah, so, um, most people when they think of a period piece makeup,
Julia:they think, like, no makeup because people didn't wear a lot of makeup.
Julia:But actually- Uh-huh … it is sometimes a lot of makeup.
Julia:Mm-hmm.
Julia:And sometimes it's a very specific technique to make it look like no makeup.
Lottie:Okay.
Julia:Um, and also, if you're on the prairie, people are dirty, so we're,
Julia:we're trying to make people look beautiful but also dirty, but also natural.
Julia:And one thing that I discovered we do on period pieces, 'cause this is,
Julia:um- One of my first features that's a period, um, you actually have
Julia:to fill in the ear piercing hole.
Speaker:Oh.
Julia:So yeah, we had to do that on a lot of the characters because
Julia:they had pierced ears, and back then people just really didn't pierce
Julia:their ears as much as we do today.
Julia:So that was a unique challenge to overcome.
Julia:It was very exciting.
Speaker:Interesting.
Speaker:Uh, and while we're still talking to you, Julia, um, tell us about
Speaker:your experience here, and, and well, first of all, let me go back.
Speaker:Mm. Tell us about your previous experience.
Julia:Okay.
Julia:So I went to film school in Greenville, South Carolina.
Julia:I, from a young age, knew I wanted to work in film.
Julia:I just didn't know quite where.
Julia:So when I was in film school, I really fell in love with film makeup.
Julia:Mm-hmm.
Julia:Took a lot of film makeup classes.
Julia:I worked on a lot of student films, and I did theater, uh,
Julia:worked on the theater makeup crew as well during my time in school.
Julia:So I graduated in '23, and since then I've been pursuing film.
Julia:Done some shorts, done a couple features.
Julia:This is my third feature, so-
Speaker:Cool
Speaker:… Julia: very excited to be here.
Speaker:Cool.
Speaker:And, uh, where do you live right now?
Julia:Greenville, South Carolina.
Speaker:Greenville, South Carolina.
Speaker:And Lottie, what about you?
Speaker:What's your history with film?
Lottie:Um, so I, this is my second professional set, I guess.
Lottie:Um, well, technically third, but the first one I was just a extra,
Lottie:uh, so this is all kinda new to me.
Lottie:My history with film, when I was about 12 I started making movies with, you know,
Lottie:friends and family, and it just clicked and I knew that's what I wanted to do.
Lottie:So I started my own little film group, my mini studio, and that's been going
Lottie:on for about three years now, and we're making our own short film right now.
Lottie:It's taking, uh, longer than expected, but it's been a really great experience.
Lottie:And then from there I made some connections that got me
Lottie:involved in my first feature, and then that led me to this one.
Speaker:Very good.
Speaker:And, um, so some unique challenges on this one?
Lottie:Um, some of the materials that we used were very difficult to wash.
Lottie:Specifically what we used for the Native Americans, um, 'cause we had a scene…
Lottie:Well, I guess I shouldn't spoil it.
Lottie:I don't know.
Lottie:There, there was… I'll be vague.
Lottie:There was a scene where the costumes had, more stuff on them than usual,
Lottie:and I needed to wash them because we were using them for the next day.
Lottie:And the washing was fine, but the things, like, does not dry.
Lottie:Mm. I, I had it… And you can't put it in the dryer 'cause that'll ruin it.
Lottie:You can't put it out in the sun 'cause that'll ruin it.
Lottie:So I had to put a box fan on it, and it was drying for over
Lottie:24 hours and it was still damp.
Speaker:Mm.
Lottie:We had the actress wear it damp Oh
Lottie:'cause there was nothing else we could do, but-
Speaker:Yeah
Speaker:… Lottie: so, yeah.
Speaker:I guess e- even for the others, you did have a lot of, uh, laundry to do-
Lottie:Yeah
Lottie:… Speaker: because a lot of our scenes required them to be dirty.
Lottie:Right.
Lottie:In fact, naturally a, a lot of our scenes were in the mud.
Lottie:Right.
Lottie:Just by it was raining, we were down by the river.
Lottie:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Uh, you know, and a lot of outdoor stuff and of course then Julia-
Speaker:… was specifically making them dirty- Mm-hmm … uh, to fit the, the scenes as required.
Lottie:Yeah.
Lottie:Mm-hmm.
Lottie:I did a little bit of that too on the costumes.
Lottie:Yeah.
Speaker:Interesting.
Speaker:Uh, Julia, you had a lot of help from our young actors.
Julia:I did.
Julia:Yes.
Julia:Okay.
Julia:So it was a very unique experience.
Julia:We, um, coming into the project, I was brought on two weeks before and I had
Julia:seen, you know, the extensive list of cast and I said, "Uh, if at all possible,
Julia:I need some help." Mm. Because if you have more than I would say four actors
Julia:it can be a bit challenging to get everybody through the chair without having
Julia:them come hours and hours beforehand.
Julia:So we did have some help.
Julia:Shout out to Michelle, uh, Vanderpool.
Julia:She came in for a week and helped and then she had to go, so we got some
Julia:makeup interns and it was our lead actress Lucy and then, uh, her sister
Julia:Elena and, uh, believe it or not, Asher Smallbone as well was a little interested.
Julia:Oh, yeah?
Julia:I s- I still don't know if he was interested in the makeup or
Julia:just hanging out with us- Uh-huh
Julia:'cause we're so cool.
Julia:Uh-huh.
Julia:They, they were definitely very helpful and, um, we got to the point
Julia:where we could do some hairstyle.
Julia:They could do some hairstyles on their own and they could do some very basic
Julia:makeup looks and we kept them, uh, up to date with the sanitation standards.
Julia:Mm-hmm.
Julia:And I was very impressed with their work.
Speaker:And of course they were doing it because it was fun.
Speaker:Yeah.
Julia:Yeah.
Speaker:They just, uh, wanted to learn and- Mm-hmm … wanted to get
Speaker:involved and so that was very cool.
Lottie:Personally, I think it had a lot to do with Julia
Speaker:Uh-huh.
Lottie:She's cooler than me, probably.
Speaker:Oh, you think so?
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:I know that both of you have been very appreciated here and, it's just a, a
Speaker:lot of work So, hair and makeup was done in the building- Mm-hmm … where
Speaker:our sound stage and a lot of our filming was done on green screen.
Speaker:And, uh, so when we were filming here on the farm and out in the bush, I
Speaker:think a lot of your work was still being done back at Storytellers, right?
Julia:Mm-hmm.
Lottie:Yeah.
Speaker:At the sound stage.
Speaker:It was.
Speaker:And then actors were being transported back and forth.
Lottie:Right.
Lottie:At first, and then we kinda figured out that that wasn't the best
Lottie:system, so I was transporting costumes to and from as needed.
Lottie:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Yep.
Lottie:Which was still a challenge, but-
Speaker:And I'm just gonna say right now, because I, I did not
Speaker:say it before when I was talking to, you know, the art department.
Speaker:Right now, where we are doing this interview, we are in, uh, Johnny
Speaker:Cash's house, and the interesting thing is, like right now, this room
Speaker:that we are in is hand-hewn logs.
Speaker:Uh, I believe, if I understand correctly, this was built in the 1830s.
Speaker:Like this is- Hmm … pre-Civil War.
Speaker:I mean, it's pretty cool.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, uh, and some of our scenes actually were shot- Yeah
Speaker:right, a lot of our, at the Thompson family home-
Lottie:Mm-hmm
Lottie:… Speaker: scenes were shot right in this room that we're in right now.
Lottie:Some- And, uh,
Lottie:some of the, the marshal's office
Speaker:was here too.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's true.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:That's true.
Speaker:So it's been, been kinda fitting for the period-type piece we've been shooting.
Lottie:Yeah.
Lottie:Yeah, it was a great find.
Lottie:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:Cool.
Speaker:Well, um, thank you so much for what you've done.
Speaker:Also thank you for sharing with our listeners.
Speaker:Um, and if you guys want to, in our show notes, for listeners to have an
Speaker:opportunity to be in touch with you.
Speaker:Our listeners are all filmmakers.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Um, and we'll get your contact information in there.
Lottie:Thank you.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Thank you.
