1 Peter 1:18-19 GW
Realize that you weren’t set free from the worthless life handed down to you from your ancestors by a payment of silver or gold which can be destroyed. Rather, the payment that freed you was the precious blood of Christ, the lamb with no defects or imperfections.
The crucifixion story
Luke 23:32-35 ERV
There were also two criminals led out with Jesus to be killed. (33) They were led to a place called “The Skull.” There the soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross. They also nailed the criminals to crosses beside Jesus—one on the right and the other on the left. (34) Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.” The soldiers threw dice to divide Jesus’ clothes between them. (35) The people stood there watching everything. The Jewish leaders laughed at Jesus. They said, “If he is God’s Chosen One, the Messiah, then let him save himself. He saved others, didn’t he?”
Luke 23:39-43 ERV
One of the criminals hanging there began to shout insults at Jesus: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Then save yourself, and save us too!” (40) But the other criminal stopped him. He said, “You should fear God. All of us will die soon. (41) You and I are guilty. We deserve to die because we did wrong. But this man has done nothing wrong.” (42) Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you begin ruling as king!” (43) Then Jesus said to him, “I promise you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Luke 23:46 ERV
Jesus shouted, “Father, I put my life in your hands!” After Jesus said this, he died.
Our problem - Sin
Romans 3:23 NLT
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Romans 4:25 NLT
He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.
Romans 6:23 NLT
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Our value - Jesus' life
John 3:16,17 NLT
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
Romans 5:6-9 NLT
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.
Our hope - Jesus
Romans 3:23-25 NLT
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (24) Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. (25) For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past
Isaiah 53:4-6 NLT
Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! (5) But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.
