Shownotes

In this enlightening talk, we have a deeper exploration into the nature and power of kindness. Here are the key points and insights from the service, focusing on the transformative impact of kindness in our lives:

  1. Spiritual Foundation of Kindness: Understanding kindness as a fruit of the Spirit, which God cultivates within us as we grow in faith and spirituality.
  2. Kindness and Wholeness: How acts of kindness contribute not only to the well-being of recipients but also to the personal wholeness of those who give. Kindness is about connecting deeply with the essence of God’s character—His unending grace and mercy.
  3. Biblical Perspectives on Kindness: Insights into how kindness is portrayed in the Bible, including references from Paul’s letters emphasising kindness as a path to repentance and transformation.
  4. The Good Samaritan: A detailed look at this powerful parable that illustrates the boundless nature of true kindness, transcending societal and cultural boundaries.
  5. Practical Impacts of Kindness: Discussion on the physical and psychological benefits of kindness, supported by both scriptural references and modern scientific research.
  6. Living Out Kindness: Practical steps and motivational insights on how to incorporate kindness into daily life, making it a transformative force for ourselves and those around us.
  7. Call to Action: Encouraging listeners to designate a day specifically for practicing intentional acts of kindness and sharing these experiences to inspire a community-wide embrace of compassionate living.

This talk is not just an exploration of kindness as a concept but a compelling call to make kindness a dynamic and transformative part of our daily lives. By embracing kindness, we embrace a part of God’s own nature and open ourselves up to a more fulfilling and spiritually enriched life. Join us as we discover how even the smallest acts of kindness can lead to radical changes, not just in individual lives but across communities.

I'm just chuckling slightly because as the introduction was playing he was talking

Sharon Edmundson:

along with it because he knows it so well.

Matt Edmundson:

I've heard it so many times, right?

Sharon Edmundson:

So I had double Matt speaking to me.

Matt Edmundson:

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Sharon Edmundson:

We'll just leave it as double Matt.

Sharon Edmundson:

Ha!

Sharon Edmundson:

Ha!

Sharon Edmundson:

I don't know what to say,

Matt Edmundson:

don't know what to say.

Matt Edmundson:

For those of you who don't know me, I'm Sharon and I'm married.

Be great to hear from you.

Matt Edmundson:

Let us know where you're watching from.

Matt Edmundson:

Because, we're just jamming the chorus, start that sentence again,

Matt Edmundson:

we're genuinely curious, aren't we?

Sharon Edmundson:

And a bit nosy, yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Are you curious or are you nosy?

Sharon Edmundson:

Oh, a bit of both, yeah, definitely.

Matt Edmundson:

Where's the line?

Matt Edmundson:

I'm not sure.

Sharon Edmundson:

Who do we have with us so far?

Matt Edmundson:

In the comments we've got Matt Crew, the

Matt Edmundson:

intro needs recording again.

Matt Edmundson:

Andy's in the comments, Peter is in the comments, so good evening to everybody.

Matt Edmundson:

What's this?

Matt Edmundson:

Mega congratulations to my United Women on winning the FA Cup Final.

Matt Edmundson:

Fair play to you, but I am going to say congratulations to the

Matt Edmundson:

women's England team, under 17s.

Sharon Edmundson:

Oh, great.

Matt Edmundson:

They're winning.

Matt Edmundson:

They're winning.

Matt Edmundson:

They're doing really well.

Matt Edmundson:

Hats off to you.

Sharon Edmundson:

Great.

Matt Edmundson:

Hats off to you.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

Go support the England women's under 17s.

Matt Edmundson:

Rebecca Dowse is in golf.

Matt Edmundson:

She's a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Absolute legend.

Matt Edmundson:

So yes, they're winning, which I'm very excited about.

Matt Edmundson:

Not that this is a football channel.

Sharon Edmundson:

No, and I really don't understand football, so I'm

Sharon Edmundson:

starting to glaze over a little bit.

Sharon Edmundson:

Moving on swiftly.

Sharon Edmundson:

Move on quickly, yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

Welcome

Matt Edmundson:

to you today.

Matt Edmundson:

We are talking, do you know what we're talking about today?

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, it's me, isn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Talking about Say that again.

Sharon Edmundson:

Kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness, you have to say it louder so it goes in the mic.

Sharon Edmundson:

I was just slightly hesitant, I was like, I think it's

Sharon Edmundson:

kindness, I listened to it earlier so I should know, but yeah, the

Sharon Edmundson:

memory's not playing at the minute.

Matt Edmundson:

The memory's not playing.

Matt Edmundson:

Peter says, nosy nothing wrong with a healthy interest.

Matt Edmundson:

Exactly,

Sharon Edmundson:

yes.

Sharon Edmundson:

Healthy interest, I like that.

Sharon Edmundson:

Would you incur?

Matt Edmundson:

Concur?

Sharon Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

We like Peter.

Matt Edmundson:

He's a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

So yes, warm welcome to everybody in the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

Today we are talking about kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

You've got double Matt today.

Matt Edmundson:

Unfortunately, I'm terribly sorry, because I'm doing the talks just

Matt Edmundson:

the way it's worked out with the schedules that I'm hosting.

Matt Edmundson:

Normally, we try and do it where somebody else is hosting when I do the

Matt Edmundson:

talk, but it didn't quite work out.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, you've got me doing the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

We're talking about kindness.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And somehow I've got to tie this into wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

Now we've been talking about the fruits of the spirit, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And we've been looking at this whole thing about spiritual health.

Matt Edmundson:

We've been talking about the fruits of the spirit, what happens to you when the

Matt Edmundson:

Holy Spirit works through you, right?

Matt Edmundson:

That's how we would define the fruits of the spirit.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, we've got all of that going on.

Matt Edmundson:

Miriam's in the comments as well.

Matt Edmundson:

Hi, Miriam.

Matt Edmundson:

Hi, Miriam.

Matt Edmundson:

Another legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Say hi to Miriam.

Matt Edmundson:

Miriam's on YouTube.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, say hi to Miriam.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, so we've been doing this spiritual health thing, talking about

Matt Edmundson:

the fruits of the spirit, what happens when the Holy Spirit works for you.

Matt Edmundson:

We're on the topic of kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, yes, we're going to get into that.

Matt Edmundson:

So what's going to happen?

Matt Edmundson:

Why don't you, they're going to have enough of my voice, you

Matt Edmundson:

tell them what's going to happen.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, so we've got Matt talking about kindness.

Sharon Edmundson:

And then after that, we're going to come back and discuss the talk and

Sharon Edmundson:

pick up on any comments that you make.

Sharon Edmundson:

So throughout the talk, do put your comments in.

Sharon Edmundson:

If you've got any examples of where you've received kindness or given kindness, or

Sharon Edmundson:

just any thoughts that you've got about the talk, chuck them in the comments,

Sharon Edmundson:

and we'll hopefully pick them up after.

Matt Edmundson:

And for our American cousins that might not

Matt Edmundson:

know what chuck means, just chuck.

Matt Edmundson:

Put them in the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm just translating.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, check them in the comments, lob them.

Matt Edmundson:

Lob them in the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

We will see you in there during the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, Sharon, I'll be back after the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

So I'm just looking for the, there we go, always looking for

Matt Edmundson:

the talk button on the keypad.

Matt Edmundson:

So we're gonna play the talk now.

Matt Edmundson:

We'll be back for Conversation Street.

Matt Edmundson:

Don't go anywhere.

Matt Edmundson:

Grab your notebooks, grab your pens, because this one is I found

Matt Edmundson:

actually quite a challenging talk.

Matt Edmundson:

This whole topic of kindness, you're going to find out why.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm going to quickly switch to you.

Matt Edmundson:

You can introduce the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm going to get changed, change location, sort my hair out, and

Matt Edmundson:

then I'll be back to do the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

Here we go.

Matt Edmundson:

So the other week I was having lunch with some colleagues in a cafe catching

Matt Edmundson:

up about a new brand we are going to be launching soon in brackets just for

Matt Edmundson:

context if you don't know I run my own company as well as being part of crowd so

Matt Edmundson:

here we are chatting away eating some good food having some fantastic conversation as

Matt Edmundson:

we usually do but this for me turned into an unforgettable moment because The bill,

Matt Edmundson:

the food bill, was paid for by a stranger.

Matt Edmundson:

Now, to this day, I do not know who paid it.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know why they paid it, but pay it they did.

Matt Edmundson:

And not just for me, for all three of us.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh yes, which was amazing.

Matt Edmundson:

I was the recipient of a random act of kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

It was a beautiful thing, too.

Matt Edmundson:

Being kind, then, it seems to have this sort of Amazing ability, the power

Matt Edmundson:

to transform an ordinary moment into something really quite extraordinary.

Matt Edmundson:

So today, guess what we're looking at?

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Which is one of those words that I think can elicit all kinds of emotions in us.

Matt Edmundson:

Now the Bible tells us that kindness is a fruit of the Spirit.

Matt Edmundson:

In other words, it's something that God brings about in us and

Matt Edmundson:

through us as we grow in Him.

Matt Edmundson:

And start to become whole now.

Matt Edmundson:

All good stuff, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So let's look at it.

Matt Edmundson:

We're gonna ask, what is kindness?

Matt Edmundson:

Is it just about doing good deeds or is there more to it than that?

Matt Edmundson:

How does kindness actually make us whole, given that we're talking about wholeness?

Matt Edmundson:

Probably a good question to ask.

Matt Edmundson:

We will ask why.

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness has such a powerful impact, not just on those who receive it,

Matt Edmundson:

cause we all, makes a lot of sense, but actually also on those who give it.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh yes, that's coming.

Matt Edmundson:

And then finally we're going to ask how can we become more kind,

Matt Edmundson:

which I think is a really dangerous question, but that's just me and

Matt Edmundson:

we're going to get into all of that.

Matt Edmundson:

But before we ride into the danger zone,

Matt Edmundson:

Love the 80s pop reference there.

Matt Edmundson:

Name the movie in the comments if you know what I'm talking about.

Matt Edmundson:

But before we head into the danger zone, I want to look at the kindness of God.

Matt Edmundson:

Because this is church after all, so let's look at the kindness of God.

Matt Edmundson:

Paul is one of the key writers of the New Testament, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And he wrote a letter to a chap called Titus, who was his spiritual son.

Matt Edmundson:

And in that, he said this about himself.

Matt Edmundson:

He said, we lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

Matt Edmundson:

But when the kindness and love of God, our savior appeared, he saved us.

Matt Edmundson:

Wow, that's a great phrase, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

When the kindness and love of God appeared, he saved us.

Matt Edmundson:

Now, that word saved, he saved us.

Matt Edmundson:

What does that mean?

Matt Edmundson:

It carries the idea of soundness and wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

In other words, when the kindness and love of God appears, he

Matt Edmundson:

makes us whole, nothing missing.

Matt Edmundson:

Nothing broken.

Matt Edmundson:

Wholeness is the kindness of God in action.

Matt Edmundson:

I think that kindness is God's secret weapon that brings

Matt Edmundson:

about change in our lives.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's not just me that thinks this.

Matt Edmundson:

Actually, Paul thought this too, which is where I got the

Matt Edmundson:

idea from, not going to lie.

Matt Edmundson:

Paul wrote this in a letter to the Roman church.

Matt Edmundson:

He said, God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance.

Matt Edmundson:

Which is a really powerful idea that the purpose, the reason behind

Matt Edmundson:

God's kindness is repentance.

Matt Edmundson:

The reason God is kind is repentance, which is all about change.

Matt Edmundson:

Repentance just means to turn around, we're going one way, so we turn around

Matt Edmundson:

and we go the other way to repent.

Matt Edmundson:

That's what it means.

Matt Edmundson:

It's about turning around from what was holding us down, and in this case,

Matt Edmundson:

Paul, when he was talking to the Roman Church, was talking to them about sin, and

Matt Edmundson:

being really judgmental of other people.

Matt Edmundson:

He's telling you to turn around from that.

Matt Edmundson:

And go a different way, go a God kind of way.

Matt Edmundson:

Why?

Matt Edmundson:

Because God has been kind to you.

Matt Edmundson:

So it's about turning towards something, I think, which is infinitely better.

Matt Edmundson:

Repentance is not turning away from something out of fear.

Matt Edmundson:

Like God is mad at us.

Matt Edmundson:

So I think this idea that repentance is inspired by the

Matt Edmundson:

overwhelming kindness of God.

Matt Edmundson:

God is a beautiful thing.

Matt Edmundson:

It leads you to turn away from things that keep us broken and

Matt Edmundson:

brings you to a place of wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

The kindness of God in action.

Matt Edmundson:

Love that, not gonna lie.

Matt Edmundson:

So just what is, I love talking about this stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

I genuinely do.

Matt Edmundson:

I get really excited.

Matt Edmundson:

What is God?

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

Before we answer that question, what I want to do is

Matt Edmundson:

understand what kindness isn't.

Matt Edmundson:

What is it not?

Matt Edmundson:

Because I think there are some misconceptions out there about

Matt Edmundson:

kindness, and in understanding those, I think we'll get to

Matt Edmundson:

understand what kindness actually is.

Matt Edmundson:

The first misconception I see out there is that kindness is often

Matt Edmundson:

confused with self indulgence.

Matt Edmundson:

Let's take the idea be kind to ourselves, which is a phrase I hear a

Matt Edmundson:

lot, often tied with the idea of things like self compassion and self care,

Matt Edmundson:

probably being the most well known phrase, and I get the intent here.

Matt Edmundson:

Behind it.

Matt Edmundson:

I really do.

Matt Edmundson:

It even sounds right when we say it because self care, being

Matt Edmundson:

kind to ourselves, we're often our own worst critic, aren't we?

Matt Edmundson:

Being overly judgmental and harsh on ourselves, which I

Matt Edmundson:

don't think is godly at all.

Matt Edmundson:

So I do think self care in many ways is actually a basic responsibility before

Matt Edmundson:

God, but I don't think it should tip over into obsession with ourselves or

Matt Edmundson:

actually neglect of others as this creates a conflict with the biblical principles

Matt Edmundson:

of self denial, stewardship, and the prioritization of loving others, something

Matt Edmundson:

we should probably talk more about.

Matt Edmundson:

Self care can, I think, tip into self indulgence and it can become about

Matt Edmundson:

finding that elusive, Comfort based lifestyle, which I don't believe

Matt Edmundson:

is what faith should be about, which is all a bit ouch, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Being kind to ourselves then, that can become an excuse, can't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Which we don't want.

Matt Edmundson:

We don't want that excuse for a lifestyle which is in conflict with the plans

Matt Edmundson:

that God has for us, which repentance.

Matt Edmundson:

Being kind to yourself is not about Accepting those things that God actually

Matt Edmundson:

wants to free us from or change in us.

Matt Edmundson:

But it is about changing how you think about yourself.

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness is seeing yourself as God sees you.

Matt Edmundson:

Being kind to yourself is thinking of yourself the way

Matt Edmundson:

that God thinks about you.

Matt Edmundson:

And when you do this, honestly, it opens up the door for repentance,

Matt Edmundson:

for changing your direction in life, learning from our mistakes and

Matt Edmundson:

bringing about God's transformation and wholeness in us and through us.

Matt Edmundson:

But the reality is to do that may actually make us uncomfortable.

Matt Edmundson:

At least for a season.

Matt Edmundson:

So being kind to ourselves is not always about comfort, it's not always about being

Matt Edmundson:

comfortable, it's not about accepting those things that God wants to change in

Matt Edmundson:

us and it's not about self indulgence.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think we can also confuse kindness with something else.

Matt Edmundson:

The avoidance of conflict.

Matt Edmundson:

How many of you know what I'm talking about, right?

Matt Edmundson:

Mainly because I think the opposite of kindness is often seen as meanness,

Matt Edmundson:

and so to be kind, we avoid situations that could make us look mean.

Matt Edmundson:

So what if I define kindness simply as a behaviour intended to benefit others?

Matt Edmundson:

That's it.

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness is a behaviour intended to benefit others.

Matt Edmundson:

So the opposite of kindness is not necessarily meanness, but rather

Matt Edmundson:

a behaviour that is intended not

Matt Edmundson:

When we behave in a way that doesn't benefit somebody else,

Matt Edmundson:

we're not being kind to them.

Matt Edmundson:

If we want to be kind to somebody, maybe, just maybe, the best thing that we can do

Matt Edmundson:

for them is to confront or to challenge.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe that's the benefit that we're bringing.

Matt Edmundson:

Sure, now, hear me on this.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm not saying it has to be like this.

Matt Edmundson:

All the time.

Matt Edmundson:

There are some people that need to hear that.

Matt Edmundson:

But I don't think that kindness is about keeping the peace at all

Matt Edmundson:

costs, or sidestepping difficult conversations, or ignoring injustice.

Matt Edmundson:

Actually, being kind is more about how you deal with conflict, rather

Matt Edmundson:

than the avoidance of conflict itself.

Matt Edmundson:

And we see this, don't we?

Matt Edmundson:

Case in point, the life of Jesus,

Matt Edmundson:

he was confrontational in many ways.

Matt Edmundson:

But at the same time, he was the kindness of God personified.

Matt Edmundson:

He confronted in a kind way because kindness is a behavior

Matt Edmundson:

intended to benefit others.

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness is about wholeness and not just about keeping everyone comfortable.

Matt Edmundson:

Why does kindness have such a powerful impact on others and on ourselves?

Matt Edmundson:

To answer that, there's an old story about a guy who was lying

Matt Edmundson:

in a ditch next to the road.

Matt Edmundson:

He had been robbed and practically beaten to death and left there to die.

Matt Edmundson:

He was unconscious, he was pretty much naked, and in a bad way and a long

Matt Edmundson:

way from anywhere that could help.

Matt Edmundson:

He was the victim of a horrific and violent crime, but the

Matt Edmundson:

story doesn't end there.

Matt Edmundson:

It goes from bad to worse for him, because people start to walk down that

Matt Edmundson:

road and they see him, they notice him, but they don't do anything.

Matt Edmundson:

To help him, one of whom was even a priest for some reason, the three people that

Matt Edmundson:

walked past him did not want to help.

Matt Edmundson:

None of them wanted to be inconvenienced or get involved with something that

Matt Edmundson:

they shouldn't get involved with.

Matt Edmundson:

They were not being kind and the very people that should, they

Matt Edmundson:

were the very people that should have been kind, but they weren't.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's easy, I think, as we hear that story, to get angry.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think that's actually something of God in us, that kind of anger rising

Matt Edmundson:

up when somebody should have been kind, but wasn't, that's maybe why Jesus

Matt Edmundson:

told this story, which we've come to know as a parable of the good Samaritan.

Matt Edmundson:

It was a good Samaritan that pulled this guy out of the ditch

Matt Edmundson:

and paid for his medical care.

Matt Edmundson:

Now, the important part of this story is the kindness came from a Samaritan who,

Matt Edmundson:

They didn't just own a telephone line here in the UK or a bunch of charity shops.

Matt Edmundson:

They were actually a race of people who were despised by

Matt Edmundson:

the Jews at the time of Jesus.

Matt Edmundson:

Now, Jesus was talking to Jews.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

They despised the Samaritans and yet it was a Samaritan who was

Matt Edmundson:

the kind stranger in the story.

Matt Edmundson:

To bring this matter home.

Matt Edmundson:

I want you to imagine that you are the Good Samaritan.

Matt Edmundson:

You walk down the road and you see someone in the ditch that is from a

Matt Edmundson:

group of people that have done nothing but spew hatred towards your people,

Matt Edmundson:

that have oppressed them in some way.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe they have, I don't know, Nazi tattoos on their arm.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe they are a bully from school or that person that went out of their way and

Matt Edmundson:

knowingly had an affair with your partner.

Matt Edmundson:

Basically, they are a person that has wronged you in some major way.

Matt Edmundson:

They are lying there in the ditch.

Matt Edmundson:

They need your help and you see them.

Matt Edmundson:

Do you help or do you walk past?

Matt Edmundson:

Jesus here is helping us understand that kindness is the

Matt Edmundson:

outworking of the love of God.

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness is a behavior based on love intended to help

Matt Edmundson:

others, to help our neighbor.

Matt Edmundson:

It's powerful stuff, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Jesus goes on to ask this question.

Matt Edmundson:

He says, what do you think?

Matt Edmundson:

Which of the three became a neighbor to the man attacked by robbers?

Matt Edmundson:

The one who treated him kindly, the religion scholar responded.

Matt Edmundson:

Jesus said, Go and do the same.

Matt Edmundson:

Bingo!

Matt Edmundson:

Right there.

Matt Edmundson:

Go and do the same.

Matt Edmundson:

Go and be kind.

Matt Edmundson:

Look beyond the superficial, the tattoos, the memories, the

Matt Edmundson:

hurt and the pain and be kind.

Matt Edmundson:

Now, Matt, this is easy to say, but it is hard to do, right?

Matt Edmundson:

But this is what happens when the Holy Spirit brings about the fruit

Matt Edmundson:

of kindness in us and through us.

Matt Edmundson:

It's what happens as we start to become whole.

Matt Edmundson:

You cannot, I don't think, According to scripture, be a whole person

Matt Edmundson:

without being a kind person.

Matt Edmundson:

You cannot be whole without being kind.

Matt Edmundson:

So what about the Samaritan?

Matt Edmundson:

Was there a benefit for him in all of this?

Matt Edmundson:

We know that there was a definite cost when we read the story.

Matt Edmundson:

Cost him money, cost him time and effort and actually probably in forgiveness.

Matt Edmundson:

But was there a benefit to go along with this Same level of cost.

Matt Edmundson:

Research has shown that when we are kind to others, our own happiness and

Matt Edmundson:

life satisfaction actually increase.

Matt Edmundson:

That's a beautiful thing.

Matt Edmundson:

And our blood pressure and our cortisol levels, which is a hormone directly

Matt Edmundson:

correlated with stress they decrease.

Matt Edmundson:

That's another beautiful thing, right?

Matt Edmundson:

All good stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

And not actually at all surprising, because as you would expect, the Bible

Matt Edmundson:

does have something to say about this.

Matt Edmundson:

It says in the book of Proverbs that those who are kind benefit themselves,

Matt Edmundson:

but the cruel bring ruin upon themselves.

Matt Edmundson:

So we can see from the Neuroscience.

Matt Edmundson:

And the Bible and probably, you know what we know and have experienced that

Matt Edmundson:

kindness is one of those things that transforms both the receiver and the

Matt Edmundson:

giver win . So if you are not feeling happy in life, rather than waiting

Matt Edmundson:

on someone to come and be your white knight in shining armor, why not figure

Matt Edmundson:

out why God is telling you to be kind?

Matt Edmundson:

And watch what happens.

Matt Edmundson:

Your journey to wholeness is your journey in kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

So that's quite a revelation right there.

Matt Edmundson:

So how can we actually be more kind?

Matt Edmundson:

That's a big question, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

I'm aware that for many of you watching this, you may have rarely experienced

Matt Edmundson:

kindness first hand, and the sad truth is, if we haven't seen kindness, if

Matt Edmundson:

we haven't experienced kindness, I think it's hard to actually be kind.

Matt Edmundson:

It's easy to be unkind.

Matt Edmundson:

We just repeat what has been modelled to us.

Matt Edmundson:

So how can we become kinder people?

Matt Edmundson:

The answer lies not within our own strength or in our own power, But

Matt Edmundson:

I think in opening ourselves up to the healing of the Holy Spirit and

Matt Edmundson:

experience His kindness, the kindness of God, His wholeness in our lives.

Matt Edmundson:

The ultimate act of kindness was Christ on the cross, taking our place.

Matt Edmundson:

Spiritually, we were the ones lying in that bed.

Matt Edmundson:

Ditched by the side of the road.

Matt Edmundson:

We were the ones that were in a bad way, and Jesus was the Samaritan.

Matt Edmundson:

We despised him.

Matt Edmundson:

The Bible says we hated the name of him and we mocked him for years,

Matt Edmundson:

and we still do in many ways.

Matt Edmundson:

But he was kind and he heals.

Matt Edmundson:

Our hearts and our wounds.

Matt Edmundson:

He pays the price for us, and it is God's kindness that leads us to repentance, to

Matt Edmundson:

change, to turn around and find wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

When that grace of God, his kindness and action heals and changes us.

Matt Edmundson:

We start to become like Him and we start to become kind because He is kind.

Matt Edmundson:

Jesus put it this way.

Matt Edmundson:

He said, I tell you, love your enemies, help and give without expecting a return.

Matt Edmundson:

You'll never, I promise, regret it.

Matt Edmundson:

Live out this God created identity the way our Father lives towards

Matt Edmundson:

us, generously and graciously, even when we're at our worst.

Matt Edmundson:

Our Father is kind.

Matt Edmundson:

You be kind.

Matt Edmundson:

Wow.

Matt Edmundson:

We take the kindness of God and we extend that to others.

Matt Edmundson:

And the key here is not to do it expecting anything in return

Matt Edmundson:

because that's not kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

That's trading, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

That's almost investing.

Matt Edmundson:

We have a different example.

Matt Edmundson:

Our father is kind.

Matt Edmundson:

So you be kind.

Matt Edmundson:

Jesus goes on when talking to the crowd of people, he goes on to say

Matt Edmundson:

this, don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults,

Matt Edmundson:

unless of course, you're not kind.

Matt Edmundson:

You want the same treatment.

Matt Edmundson:

Ouch.

Matt Edmundson:

Don't condemn those who are down.

Matt Edmundson:

That hardness can boomerang.

Matt Edmundson:

Be easy on people.

Matt Edmundson:

You'll find life a lot easier.

Matt Edmundson:

Give away your life.

Matt Edmundson:

You'll find life given back, but not merely given back.

Matt Edmundson:

Given back with bonus and blessing.

Matt Edmundson:

Giving, not getting is the way.

Matt Edmundson:

Generosity begets generosity.

Matt Edmundson:

Don't be mean to people.

Matt Edmundson:

Don't jump all over them.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm not telling you not to hold people to account.

Matt Edmundson:

Because that's not what it's about.

Matt Edmundson:

Behave in a way that benefits others.

Matt Edmundson:

Be kind, which includes what you say, right?

Matt Edmundson:

Who around you needs to hear a word, a kind word from you?

Matt Edmundson:

Texting them is okay, but calling them is better.

Matt Edmundson:

I came across a study recently that found when young girls were under some form

Matt Edmundson:

of stress, that stress would reduce when they hear a voice of someone they trusted.

Matt Edmundson:

Like their mum.

Matt Edmundson:

Not only did their stress go down, but their positivity actually went up, which

Matt Edmundson:

is not, it's not to be unexpected, right?

Matt Edmundson:

It makes an awful lot of sense, but you know what?

Matt Edmundson:

That same study also found that if a mum sent a text message rather

Matt Edmundson:

than actually spoke to them, The effect was not nearly as profound.

Matt Edmundson:

What that means is this, voice is more powerful than text messages.

Matt Edmundson:

So if someone, if you need to be kind to someone, if someone needs a kind

Matt Edmundson:

word from you, be vocal about it.

Matt Edmundson:

Text messages are okay.

Matt Edmundson:

But it's better for them to hear your voice.

Matt Edmundson:

Calling takes an extra effort.

Matt Edmundson:

Visiting that person takes even more effort, but that's the

Matt Edmundson:

kindness of God in action, right?

Matt Edmundson:

That's all it is.

Matt Edmundson:

So talk with people.

Matt Edmundson:

Look for opportunities to help others without expecting anything in return.

Matt Edmundson:

Offer a helping hand and be like the good Samaritan.

Matt Edmundson:

What would happen if those that disagreed with each other in our society We're

Matt Edmundson:

actually kind and helpful to each other at the same time, despite those differences,

Matt Edmundson:

rather than just spouting hate.

Matt Edmundson:

What a difference that would make.

Matt Edmundson:

We should be more Samaritan and less judgy.

Matt Edmundson:

Open the door for others.

Matt Edmundson:

Just listen to them, send care packages, cook a meal, talk to the

Matt Edmundson:

person who is serving you at the checkout, make them smile, make that

Matt Edmundson:

a challenge, can I get this person in front of me to smile, yes or no?

Matt Edmundson:

Take an interest, call a friend you haven't spoken to for a while,

Matt Edmundson:

compliment everyone you meet with actual genuineness, not in a false

Matt Edmundson:

kind of way, just be genuine.

Matt Edmundson:

Volunteer, donate, even pay for somebody's coffee or meal at a cafe.

Matt Edmundson:

in a way that benefits others.

Matt Edmundson:

There are so many ways to be kind and it just takes intentionality and the Holy

Matt Edmundson:

Spirit working in you and through you.

Matt Edmundson:

Just allow that to happen and go for it.

Matt Edmundson:

So this week, I want to challenge you to designate a day as your kindness day.

Matt Edmundson:

Imagine a day wholly devoted to spreading kindness In every

Matt Edmundson:

interaction that you have, every conversation, even with those you find

Matt Edmundson:

it hard to agree with, plan it out.

Matt Edmundson:

What can you do?

Matt Edmundson:

What can you say?

Matt Edmundson:

Be intentional about it.

Matt Edmundson:

See how it goes.

Matt Edmundson:

But if I'm honest, I don't want it to just be a one off.

Matt Edmundson:

If Thursday is your kindness day, do it every Thursday.

Matt Edmundson:

Build the habit of kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

Because the impact will be extraordinary, extraordinary, because kindness will

Matt Edmundson:

seep out of every area of your life and it won't just be Thursday, it'll be

Matt Edmundson:

Wednesday and Tuesday and when we practice it and keep being intentional about it.

Matt Edmundson:

Things can and will change in the world around us.

Matt Edmundson:

Remember, as the Bible tells us, those who are kind indeed benefit themselves.

Matt Edmundson:

Kindness is one of the few things that really is a win.

Matt Edmundson:

So let's make kindness our mission.

Matt Edmundson:

What do you say?

Matt Edmundson:

Choose your kindness day.

Matt Edmundson:

Choose to be kind to everyone you meet that day.

Matt Edmundson:

And even those of you who don't, share your stories with

Matt Edmundson:

us, we'd love to hear them.

Matt Edmundson:

Remember, God our Father is kind, so we get to choose to be kind too.

Matt Edmundson:

So there

Matt Edmundson:

you go, quick change of location.

Sharon Edmundson:

You did that so well, so quickly.

Matt Edmundson:

The boy's got talent.

Sharon Edmundson:

Definitely.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, something like that.

Matt Edmundson:

Welcome back to Conversation Street.

Matt Edmundson:

Glad you could join us.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes, I did the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

For those of you who joined us during the talk, a warm welcome to you today, Sharon.

Matt Edmundson:

My beautiful wife and I are hosting, and I just happened to do the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

Ordinarily, that doesn't happen.

Matt Edmundson:

Normally, our scheduling's a little bit better than that.

Matt Edmundson:

But on this occasion, we need Double

Sharon Edmundson:

Matt.

Sharon Edmundson:

That's the phrase of the day.

Sharon Edmundson:

Double Matt.

Matt Edmundson:

Double Matt.

Matt Edmundson:

At least it's not triple.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah at least I'm not hosting and speaking.

Matt Edmundson:

That would be tricky, but nigh impossible, actually.

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway, I digress.

Matt Edmundson:

So what did you make to the talk?

Matt Edmundson:

There are lots of things going on in the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

I was watching that people dipping in and out on the old gram, people

Matt Edmundson:

dipping in and out on the old Facebook lots of comments going on.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, I think I had different reactions.

Sharon Edmundson:

Part of me is just, lots of really lovely bits.

Sharon Edmundson:

And then there was quite a bit of owie bits.

Sharon Edmundson:

It's quite challenging, isn't it, as well?

Sharon Edmundson:

It's lovely on the one hand and the story you started with.

Sharon Edmundson:

I love hearing stories like that of these random acts of kindness.

Sharon Edmundson:

And I know Nicola put in the comments that she's done some, and I remember

Sharon Edmundson:

her talking about them in the past.

Sharon Edmundson:

I can't quite remember what they are.

Sharon Edmundson:

So I was looking for some to come back in the comments.

Sharon Edmundson:

And it's always really, it's really cool to hear those things, I think.

Sharon Edmundson:

And they do, they can change your day, can't they?

Sharon Edmundson:

When someone's kind to you.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

But then there is the owie.

Sharon Edmundson:

section where actually it can be a challenge being kind sometimes

Sharon Edmundson:

if you've got someone who you find very frustrating and you just

Sharon Edmundson:

want to tell them how you feel.

Sharon Edmundson:

And of course sometimes it is appropriate to tell them how you feel, but it's

Sharon Edmundson:

what's our motivation and what's our tone and are we doing it out of

Sharon Edmundson:

kindness or is it pure frustration?

Sharon Edmundson:

Yes.

Sharon Edmundson:

That kind of thing.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yes.

Sharon Edmundson:

So yeah, it's a challenge.

Matt Edmundson:

Very much a big challenge, very much a big challenge.

Matt Edmundson:

So yes yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Peter said a good example of kindness is my sister back in the UK has

Matt Edmundson:

recently had a cancerous cyst removed.

Matt Edmundson:

A friend of mine here in Spain sent her flowers to celebrate the great news.

Matt Edmundson:

She is unknown to my sister.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah,

Sharon Edmundson:

that would be totally unexpected, wouldn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

So that's got quite a big impact.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, she's really lovely.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

But Peter, you should send flowers as well.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm assuming Peter did actually.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, it's great news about your sister as well, Peter.

Matt Edmundson:

We've been praying for her.

Matt Edmundson:

Good news that she's on the road to recovery, which is great.

Matt Edmundson:

And that's actually, it's one of those things that one of the kindest things you

Matt Edmundson:

can do for people is pray for 'em, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And to take that time aside and just to remember them before God in prayer, it's

Matt Edmundson:

always a good place to start with people.

Matt Edmundson:

I didn't even say that in the talk.

Matt Edmundson:

What kind of a preacher am I?

Sharon Edmundson:

It's hard to fit everything into 20 minutes, isn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

It is

Matt Edmundson:

yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Matt Crew says There's so much

Sharon Edmundson:

that could be said.

Matt Edmundson:

Matt Crew says you don't sound as fluey compared to midweek.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes, true.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm pretty much healed now, which is a beautiful thing.

Matt Edmundson:

You're doing much better, aren't you?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, back to normal, which is nice.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah very nice.

Matt Edmundson:

What else we got?

Matt Edmundson:

Jenny's in the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

Andy says, sounds like you've been listening to one too many podcasts, Matt.

Matt Edmundson:

Why'd you say that, Endy?

Matt Edmundson:

Not that I'm offended at all, but I'm curious as to what you mean by that.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah interesting comments.

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway, I digress from the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

What were your notes?

Matt Edmundson:

You took lots of notes.

Matt Edmundson:

I didn't, I thought it was a bit weird if I took notes of my own talk.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know, I just didn't.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, it just helps me to concentrate a bit and then

Sharon Edmundson:

to remember bits that stood out.

Sharon Edmundson:

I think apart from the story you started with, the first thing that stood out

Sharon Edmundson:

was about God's kindness repentance, because I think sometimes we can get the

Sharon Edmundson:

impression that God is just wanting us to do the right thing and almost is angry,

Sharon Edmundson:

Oh, you've messed up again, but it's showing like it, no, it's his kindness

Sharon Edmundson:

that is wanting us to turn around.

Sharon Edmundson:

It's not this angry God is just going.

Sharon Edmundson:

I guess it's the same when we look at someone we love, who's making

Sharon Edmundson:

decisions that we think are actually, or we can see that are really harmful.

Sharon Edmundson:

I think sometimes it's easier from the outside looking in to go, that's, that

Sharon Edmundson:

doesn't make sense, that's going to be harmful to your life and looking at them

Sharon Edmundson:

and just going, why are you doing that?

Sharon Edmundson:

No, don't do that.

Sharon Edmundson:

Do this and it's not because you hate them.

Sharon Edmundson:

It is literally because you love them and you want good for them

Sharon Edmundson:

and you want their life to go.

Sharon Edmundson:

So I think that was the first thing that came out is God's kind.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, and being God.

Sharon Edmundson:

I think he's surely he's got to be the kindest.

Sharon Edmundson:

If you think of the kindest person that you've ever met, it's like

Sharon Edmundson:

God is way more kind than that.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, he is the kindest being ever.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, that's very true.

Matt Edmundson:

I like that.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I think it's an interesting one, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Because again, we're talking about wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

How do you become a whole person?

Matt Edmundson:

I think part of that journey is understanding that God is in fact kind

Matt Edmundson:

towards you and towards everybody else.

Matt Edmundson:

And that in his kindness, he will bring about that wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

And part of that journey then is the outworking of kindness, the

Matt Edmundson:

kindness of God through you, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So he uses you and me to bring the cut his kindness to the world.

Matt Edmundson:

And that's all part of the journey, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

And that's where you start to go.

Matt Edmundson:

Wow, that is a bit.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, but involved.

Sharon Edmundson:

I see Dave, there's so many comments, I feel like we're

Sharon Edmundson:

not being able to pick up on them all.

Sharon Edmundson:

But I've just seen one from Dave saying, we have to be prepared to get involved

Sharon Edmundson:

with people like the Good Samaritan.

Sharon Edmundson:

That's part of the cost.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And I think, yeah, there is sometimes a cost to kindness, isn't there?

Sharon Edmundson:

And I think with that Samaritan, it's like going into what is essentially an

Sharon Edmundson:

enemy village to find somewhere safe where this guy can be healed and recover.

Sharon Edmundson:

Actually, that is a huge cost.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And that's not to say that we shouldn't look after our own needs as well.

Sharon Edmundson:

But I think sometimes we do need wisdom on where to step out and where

Sharon Edmundson:

we need to pay that cost and actually where sometimes we need to draw back.

Sharon Edmundson:

That can be a fine line sometimes.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, that all comes down to boundaries, doesn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

And understanding boundaries.

Matt Edmundson:

And that's one of those things, we have such a fear, I think of being

Matt Edmundson:

of burning out and quite rightly so to all being taken advantage of.

Matt Edmundson:

But I always remember something they said at Bible school, which is always

Matt Edmundson:

stuck with me, it's better to have a little wildfire than no fire at all.

Matt Edmundson:

In other words, I'd rather be taken advantage of a little bit, or maybe go

Matt Edmundson:

you know, beyond my boundaries, maybe a little bit, then not

Matt Edmundson:

enough, if that makes sense.

Matt Edmundson:

But I'm not talking about being stupid or excessive, obviously

Sharon Edmundson:

obviously in that story with the Good Samaritan, that was

Sharon Edmundson:

somebody who was completely helpless.

Sharon Edmundson:

There was nothing he could do to help himself.

Sharon Edmundson:

And yeah he actually, he needed somebody, which is very different to

Sharon Edmundson:

someone not being continuously not taking responsibility for their own

Sharon Edmundson:

life, isn't it, where yeah, different scenarios, different responses sometimes.

Matt Edmundson:

They do.

Matt Edmundson:

They do.

Matt Edmundson:

And, but again, it sounds wonderful, doesn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

The kindness of God is extended to us and through us, but there can be a cost.

Matt Edmundson:

To that, it's

Sharon Edmundson:

not popular, is it?

Matt Edmundson:

No, it's not popular.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's not all sunshine and rainbows, either.

Matt Edmundson:

It's not it's can't being kind is not always easy to do.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think that's the whole point of it, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Is it's not always straightforward.

Matt Edmundson:

It's not always easy.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

But you know that there is a cost and we do have to count that cost.

Sharon Edmundson:

I think I've got, there's a comment from Matt Crew saying

Sharon Edmundson:

I've had people who've taken advantage of my kindness and then twisted the

Sharon Edmundson:

kindness into claiming its evilness.

Sharon Edmundson:

It's hard to trust anyone else after your kindness has been violated.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, that can be tricky.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, and we need to be wise with our kindness.

Sharon Edmundson:

But I think at the end of the day, it's like, who are we serving?

Sharon Edmundson:

And what do we expect from our kindness?

Sharon Edmundson:

I think that's something that helps me it's God that I'm serving not people.

Sharon Edmundson:

So in a sense, how they react to that's not my responsibility.

Sharon Edmundson:

My responsibility before God is how am I, what's my actions?

Sharon Edmundson:

How am I thinking about people?

Sharon Edmundson:

How am I dealing with that?

Sharon Edmundson:

Cause it's hard when people are like that back, isn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

You're just trying to be kind and it's getting misinterpreted.

Sharon Edmundson:

That is, that's tricky.

Sharon Edmundson:

But yeah, I think for me, that would be how I'd help with that one.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

That's super wise.

Matt Edmundson:

I think I said this in the talk that actually, if it's hard to model

Matt Edmundson:

kindness, if you've never actually received kindness in any way, and we've

Matt Edmundson:

all got our stories, and we've all got stories of when people have been

Matt Edmundson:

unkind, as well as when people have been kind, and we've all got those stories.

Matt Edmundson:

But like you say, fundamentally, kindness is a fruit of the spirit.

Matt Edmundson:

If God is living in you, and you are a Christian, and you are

Matt Edmundson:

on your journey to wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

Part of that deal, in some respects, whether we like it or whether

Matt Edmundson:

we don't, we're going to have to extend the kindness of God out.

Matt Edmundson:

And what we learned from Christ on the cross is actually, it's not always that

Matt Edmundson:

well received, with the two guys, either side of him on the cross, one of them

Matt Edmundson:

was criticizing him and mocking him.

Matt Edmundson:

The other guy was like no

Sharon Edmundson:

he did it anyway.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And yeah, I think that brings back to the verse where it talks

Sharon Edmundson:

about the God, oh, it's stuff in Romans.

Sharon Edmundson:

I can't think of the exact quote where it talks about how Jesus died

Sharon Edmundson:

for us when we were his enemies.

Sharon Edmundson:

So even for people when we are mocking him, rejecting him, he

Sharon Edmundson:

still extends that gift to us and it's up to us what we do with it.

Sharon Edmundson:

But he's constantly giving that kindness just can't come back to me,

Sharon Edmundson:

but he's kind, but he's not controlling.

Sharon Edmundson:

So he gives us the choice of how we receive that, how we react to that.

Sharon Edmundson:

And yeah, it's the same, isn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

We give out that kindness and Pete, some people are going to reject it.

Sharon Edmundson:

Some people are going to receive it, but it's for us to just, to

Sharon Edmundson:

say, Judy, give it out, isn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

But I think it's a really good point about, it's about being

Sharon Edmundson:

connected to God and it's not just all this self effort stuff, but.

Sharon Edmundson:

If we're connected to God and constantly receiving his kindness, then it's easier

Sharon Edmundson:

to give from what you've got than try and give something that you've not got.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, that's super true.

Matt Edmundson:

Because I'm there's a guy was talking to you the day he was talking

Matt Edmundson:

about how he was a kind person.

Matt Edmundson:

But he was saying it in the context of something bad is going on in my life.

Matt Edmundson:

Therefore, I don't deserve it because I was a kind person.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, and I think that's very dangerous thinking.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah very dangerous thinking, because that's a case of I'm doing this

Matt Edmundson:

stuff to earn some kind of position in life, which I think is not going

Matt Edmundson:

to help you really in any way.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think the other thing to think about here is actually, God is kind to you.

Matt Edmundson:

But how God defines kindness, and how we understand kindness,

Matt Edmundson:

might not be connected that well at various points, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And so I like the definition that kindness is mercy, that kindness is a benefit and

Matt Edmundson:

is an action intended to benefit you.

Matt Edmundson:

And so when God is kind to humanity, you don't always see the end from

Matt Edmundson:

the beginning, but he does, and we have to trust that, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And God being kind to you is not giving you everything you want or need.

Matt Edmundson:

Everything that your wishlist sort of thing.

Sharon Edmundson:

And one of the things I think it's reminded me

Sharon Edmundson:

that I did the first talk on the Fruits of the Spirit about love and

Sharon Edmundson:

I've got my train of thought now.

Sharon Edmundson:

Oh, yeah, it was talking about how sometimes we can

Sharon Edmundson:

do things that look loving.

Sharon Edmundson:

So you can have two people do the same action that looks like love.

Sharon Edmundson:

So maybe make a meal for somebody who's having a hard time from

Sharon Edmundson:

one person, but the motivation can be completely different.

Sharon Edmundson:

So the motivation for one person might actually be love in that they've

Sharon Edmundson:

concerned about that person and they want to show them support and

Sharon Edmundson:

whatever the other person, it might be

Sharon Edmundson:

the motivation is to make themselves look good or like that to get something back.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And there was an example, I gave the story of somebody who, when

Sharon Edmundson:

they first became a Christian, they had this just sense of God's love

Sharon Edmundson:

and how it was such a pure love.

Sharon Edmundson:

And I think that could be said with all of these fruits from God.

Sharon Edmundson:

It's a pure kindness.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

Out of purity.

Sharon Edmundson:

So that the inside matches the action.

Sharon Edmundson:

There's not this kind of separateness between them.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And I think that again, that's the difference when, if we're connected

Sharon Edmundson:

with God and receiving from him, we've got much more chance of giving out pure

Sharon Edmundson:

kindness rather than all this, wrong motives, right thing for the wrong reason.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah very true.

Matt Edmundson:

So Nicola's put one of her stories in the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

So I love this one.

Matt Edmundson:

I once paid for a person behind me on the M6 toll.

Matt Edmundson:

They caught up with her at the next service, in fact I'm going

Matt Edmundson:

to put this in the broadcast.

Matt Edmundson:

They caught up with me at the next services, super grateful I'm guessing

Matt Edmundson:

because they had forgotten their money.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

Oh, yeah, that's great.

Sharon Edmundson:

I think that sounds quite fun, doesn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

And that when you were talking in the talk about having a day where you

Sharon Edmundson:

have an acts of kindness day, like you say, this is something that in theory,

Sharon Edmundson:

should just be flowing out of us.

Sharon Edmundson:

But I did quite like the idea of having a focus for a day.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And like developing a habit in a sense of, but it sounds quite fun, which I liked,

Sharon Edmundson:

not because sometimes things can be I don't know, maybe I can make them like a

Sharon Edmundson:

bit of a task to do, but that can be like quite creative and, yeah, no, you totally

Sharon Edmundson:

can, about all these different things.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

No, I like the idea of it.

Matt Edmundson:

And I've, it's not that Thursday is my kindness day, but that's the day where

Matt Edmundson:

I think I have these little challenges.

Matt Edmundson:

And I just remind myself have a little reminder, the sort of do

Matt Edmundson:

the kindness thing, and it started to start to become a habit.

Matt Edmundson:

The main one is always now whenever I am my big thing, if I'm ever in the checkout

Matt Edmundson:

at the supermarket, I really want to make the person at the checkout smile.

Matt Edmundson:

That's my thing.

Matt Edmundson:

I've got a thing now I'd like I want to talk to them and engage them in a

Matt Edmundson:

way where they just, you know, Smile.

Sharon Edmundson:

I'm intrigued now as to how you do that.

Matt Edmundson:

Normally it involves a dad joke.

Sharon Edmundson:

Is it a smile from enjoyment or a smile from please move on?

Sharon Edmundson:

I don't mind either way.

Matt Edmundson:

So Andy says, Oh, you mentioned blood pressure, cortisol

Matt Edmundson:

levels in the talk, Enz Huberman coming.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, no fair play.

Sharon Edmundson:

It is interesting though, I that, when all the researchy

Sharon Edmundson:

stuff matches up with scripture.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I was listening to actually the Human Podcast today, which is why I was smiling.

Matt Edmundson:

I was walking around the park listening to one of his podcasts on sleep, which

Matt Edmundson:

I thought was really interesting.

Matt Edmundson:

Nicholas says, A few weeks ago I met a lady and her husband and she was trying

Matt Edmundson:

to get a taxi just to go down the road.

Matt Edmundson:

Because he couldn't walk that far, so I save him seven quid and get my lift.

Matt Edmundson:

Nice.

Sharon Edmundson:

Cool.

Matt Edmundson:

Nice.

Matt Edmundson:

I think Nicola

Sharon Edmundson:

is good at those little acts of kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

No contest, but Nicola's winning right now.

Sharon Edmundson:

She's putting the most stories in, definitely.

Sharon Edmundson:

But yes, you're winning, if it is a competition.

Matt Edmundson:

Pete says the comment to speak rather than text is very valid.

Matt Edmundson:

Appreciate that.

Matt Edmundson:

Text is black and white and can be read in whatever mood the receiver is in.

Matt Edmundson:

The spoken word is far warmer.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, it is.

Matt Edmundson:

It's interesting, isn't it, how the spoken word that I was really intrigued

Matt Edmundson:

by this study that came out where they took two control groups young girls

Matt Edmundson:

who were stressed with something.

Matt Edmundson:

I think it was to do with school.

Matt Edmundson:

They were stressed with something and one control group, the

Matt Edmundson:

parent, the mom, especially the mom would talk to her daughter.

Matt Edmundson:

And in the other control group, the mom would text her daughter.

Matt Edmundson:

And actually the one where she physically called her.

Matt Edmundson:

was far more effective than just a text message.

Matt Edmundson:

Which is interesting in a world that just delights in sending

Matt Edmundson:

text messages now, right?

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, sometimes it's more convenient.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

You can read them back again, can't you?

Sharon Edmundson:

You can.

Sharon Edmundson:

But yeah, I think they're, the Bible again says that there's

Sharon Edmundson:

power in the tongue, doesn't it?

Sharon Edmundson:

Talks in the beginning of the Bible of how God created by speaking.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And so you're like, I think there is a lot more power than we

Sharon Edmundson:

actually realize in when we speak.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, no, there is.

Matt Edmundson:

And actually, this comes down to your kindness challenge day as well.

Matt Edmundson:

When you're out and about talking with people, one of the things that

Matt Edmundson:

you can do to be kind, I think, is just to be encouraging and be kind

Matt Edmundson:

with your words and say, nice things, flattering things, complimentary things.

Matt Edmundson:

False way, but in a genuine way about the person in front of you,

Matt Edmundson:

because you just don't know what battles they've been fighting.

Sharon Edmundson:

It makes so much difference as well.

Sharon Edmundson:

It reminds me of this week had the last couple of weeks, actually.

Sharon Edmundson:

So at work, we have quite a few students.

Sharon Edmundson:

I work with women teaching English to non English speakers and, There's a lot of

Sharon Edmundson:

problems going on for a lot of people.

Sharon Edmundson:

So we try and help them and part of that involves connecting

Sharon Edmundson:

with different organizations.

Sharon Edmundson:

And the last couple of weeks I had to phone this one particular

Sharon Edmundson:

organization to do with housing.

Sharon Edmundson:

And the lady on the phone was so kind and helpful and I was shocked.

Sharon Edmundson:

It's a bit sad that I was shocked.

Sharon Edmundson:

I think because I've had so many phone calls where people

Sharon Edmundson:

haven't been so kind and helpful.

Sharon Edmundson:

And at the end she she said, Oh, I think it was a line that they have

Sharon Edmundson:

to say, Oh, how have I been today?

Sharon Edmundson:

Have I been helpful?

Sharon Edmundson:

I was like, you have been so helpful.

Sharon Edmundson:

so much.

Sharon Edmundson:

And then I actually wrote in and as a compliment thing on that.

Sharon Edmundson:

And you actually picked up on that, didn't you?

Sharon Edmundson:

And you were like

Sharon Edmundson:

why have you not sent me any compliment emails?

Sharon Edmundson:

So I've been sending him compliment emails every day since.

Sharon Edmundson:

Every day.

Sharon Edmundson:

Maybe I should start doing, do you want voice notes now?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah no.

Matt Edmundson:

No,

Sharon Edmundson:

okay.

Matt Edmundson:

No, Mona sends me voice notes.

Matt Edmundson:

And I, here's the thing, right?

Matt Edmundson:

I guess no one's done a study on voice notes.

Matt Edmundson:

Because I know we've gone back to this.

Matt Edmundson:

It's nicer to talk to somebody than it is to send them a text.

Matt Edmundson:

But I think voice notes are just all kinds of wrong.

Sharon Edmundson:

But for some people that actually easier if you find that

Sharon Edmundson:

if you're dyslexic, and you can't read.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

Anyway, I think we're wondering,

Matt Edmundson:

I do appreciate that for some people I, if you're

Matt Edmundson:

going to send me, I just like text me because I can read them.

Matt Edmundson:

I can scan them, if that makes sense.

Matt Edmundson:

Whereas Mona, God love her, whenever she sends me a voice mail, you know you've

Matt Edmundson:

got to sit down, get a drink, notepad.

Matt Edmundson:

It works better for some people.

Matt Edmundson:

It does.

Matt Edmundson:

No, it does.

Matt Edmundson:

It does.

Matt Edmundson:

We are

Sharon Edmundson:

very much off point.

Sharon Edmundson:

That's unlike

Matt Edmundson:

us.

Matt Edmundson:

So Matt says you can't do that when you use a self service checkout.

Matt Edmundson:

Try and get yourself

Sharon Edmundson:

to smile,

Matt Edmundson:

yeah, talk to yourself, see how long it is for the

Matt Edmundson:

security to come and take you away.

Matt Edmundson:

But this is where I think, actually intentionally going and

Matt Edmundson:

see somebody at the checkout.

Matt Edmundson:

I know the self service checkouts are easier and I know they're more convenient.

Matt Edmundson:

But sometimes deliberately going and seeing somebody that can do

Matt Edmundson:

that's doing the checkout for you.

Matt Edmundson:

One, I think they're probably in fear of their job because the whole

Matt Edmundson:

self service thing is taken over.

Matt Edmundson:

But two, Go make them smile.

Matt Edmundson:

Just do that.

Matt Edmundson:

Go and say, how's it?

Matt Edmundson:

And it just doesn't have to be people at the checkout, obviously everywhere,

Matt Edmundson:

you need to make people smile.

Matt Edmundson:

Whoever you meet.

Matt Edmundson:

Nicola says having the dog with me helps as I've trained her to

Matt Edmundson:

give hugs and sometimes that's all you need is a hug off a dog.

Matt Edmundson:

And he says totally agree, dog hugs are the best.

Matt Edmundson:

You should get a t shirt.

Matt Edmundson:

Dog hugs given that kind of thing be really quite interesting.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Anything else in your notes?

Sharon Edmundson:

Oh there was the whole thing of kindness is not the

Sharon Edmundson:

avoidance of conflict, which again I think from my own point of view, I

Sharon Edmundson:

know in the past people have really challenged me about stuff in my life

Sharon Edmundson:

and I really didn't like it at the time.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

But actually it was the kindest thing they could have done because after I'd

Sharon Edmundson:

finished fuming and muttering under my breath and like being like, I was

Sharon Edmundson:

actually, I think they've got a point.

Sharon Edmundson:

And those are the moments that have actually turned things around

Sharon Edmundson:

in my life because they've been able to see things that have

Sharon Edmundson:

needed, genuinely needed changing.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

Sometimes I think we can get I'm speaking for myself.

Sharon Edmundson:

I know I can get stuck in a rut and a bit blinkered where you just can't see

Sharon Edmundson:

your way out and it's always easier, I think, to see what somebody else is

Sharon Edmundson:

doing wrong, not necessarily wrong or where they just, if they shift stuff,

Sharon Edmundson:

life would go a whole lot better.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

And sometimes I think we can bat off those comments and be just like, Oh,

Sharon Edmundson:

you're just being horrible, but actually sometimes that can be out of kindness.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

So I think it's worth listening and just.

Sharon Edmundson:

If we do get those comments just to go, okay, is this, does this person,

Sharon Edmundson:

is this person for me, if they are, is there anything in what they've

Sharon Edmundson:

said that actually I need to listen to and take note of because it could

Sharon Edmundson:

well change our lives and actually bring us to that place of wholeness.

Matt Edmundson:

This comes back again to the kindness of God leads

Matt Edmundson:

us to repentance or leads us to change, leads us to turn around.

Matt Edmundson:

But kindness is not the avoidance of conflict, nor is it accepting it.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't think God accepts in us those things which he wants to change in us.

Matt Edmundson:

If that makes sense.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And sometimes we get comfortable in that.

Matt Edmundson:

Sometimes that's our sin.

Matt Edmundson:

Sometimes that's just our way of living.

Matt Edmundson:

And God's I don't know, I think I want you out of that really.

Matt Edmundson:

And so it's the kindness of God that brings about the repentance.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah that's where it gets tricky, because I think it's easy.

Matt Edmundson:

When you're in those situations, for me, it's easier to complain about other

Matt Edmundson:

people than it is to look at myself and go, God, what are you saying here,

Matt Edmundson:

and I've, I just have this simple check if I'm complaining about others more

Matt Edmundson:

than I am praising and being thankful, there's a balance, which is, what is it?

Matt Edmundson:

It's out of balance, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Things which are, things are unchecked.

Matt Edmundson:

I appreciate we go through seasons and that there are

Matt Edmundson:

events and stuff that happen.

Matt Edmundson:

But fundamentally Dave says, takes us back to the truth of power and

Matt Edmundson:

life and death being in the tongue.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, definitely.

Matt Edmundson:

Explain that.

Sharon Edmundson:

Yeah, I think it's picking up on what we said before about

Sharon Edmundson:

that our words are really powerful.

Sharon Edmundson:

And I know the effects on myself that if somebody is speaking kind words,

Sharon Edmundson:

it's almost if you've got a thirsty plant and you give it water, Yeah.

Sharon Edmundson:

A few hours later, it's revived.

Sharon Edmundson:

I've just done that with a plant today, which is why it's on my mind.

Sharon Edmundson:

Words are like that, but words that have come out of hate or unkindness have the

Sharon Edmundson:

completely opposite effect and have the ability to crush us or crush our spirit.

Sharon Edmundson:

So yeah, we just really need to be careful with that.

Sharon Edmundson:

How we use our words.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

I totally agree.

Matt Edmundson:

Provide an update.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, yeah, put that in the comments an update on what's

Matt Edmundson:

going on with the WhatsApp number.

Matt Edmundson:

WhatsApp number saga here at Crowd Church.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, there's a saga.

Matt Edmundson:

So we set up the WhatsApp number two years ago, and it was working fine.

Matt Edmundson:

We got apps on our phone.

Matt Edmundson:

So then whenever someone was texting Stephane, it'd come straight to my

Matt Edmundson:

phone, which was a beautiful thing.

Matt Edmundson:

But it stopped doing that a few months ago, just went, Yeah,

Matt Edmundson:

I'm not doing that anymore.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm just gonna die.

Matt Edmundson:

And so for a few weeks, we had no WhatsApp number.

Matt Edmundson:

Now we have got it working.

Matt Edmundson:

But the WhatsApp doesn't go through to my phone, it goes through

Matt Edmundson:

to the church mobile phone, for want of a better expression,

Matt Edmundson:

which is not manned all the time.

Matt Edmundson:

So we do have a WhatsApp number, you can send stuff through to it,

Matt Edmundson:

we promise we will respond to you.

Matt Edmundson:

It may not be within that hour.

Matt Edmundson:

That's all I'm saying.

Matt Edmundson:

It may take a day sometimes or depend on when it is a day or two.

Sharon Edmundson:

Okay, that's not too bad.

Sharon Edmundson:

I thought you're gonna say a month or two.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, no, should be within a few days.

Matt Edmundson:

The phone's actually on my desk in my office.

Matt Edmundson:

So it's whenever I'm in my office, every couple days.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, it is working.

Matt Edmundson:

So if you do have any prayer requests, any stuff you want to send

Matt Edmundson:

through to us, you can WhatsApp us.

Matt Edmundson:

And we will respond, honestly, and you can also reach out to us

Matt Edmundson:

via social media at Crowd Church, all through the website, crowd.

Matt Edmundson:

church and also you can reach us by email and all that sort of good stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

Email actually is probably better than WhatsApp now, because it's just available

Matt Edmundson:

on more devices, that's the update, Matt.

Matt Edmundson:

I hope that clarifies it.

Matt Edmundson:

Jenny yes, you can now start WhatsAppping me again, because

Matt Edmundson:

why would you not want to send

Sharon Edmundson:

it in all your compliments and your kind

Sharon Edmundson:

words as well as your requests.

Matt Edmundson:

Jenny, what a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Wow.

Matt Edmundson:

Edmo uses his office.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Thanks, Matt.

Matt Edmundson:

Sometimes maybe a bit too much.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe

Sharon Edmundson:

I'm not saying anything.

Sharon Edmundson:

I have seen that Matt's also asking about next week, Yeah, so yes, it is

Sharon Edmundson:

Will Sopwith talking about goodness,

Matt Edmundson:

gracious, me,

Sharon Edmundson:

what's it goodness?

Sharon Edmundson:

I wrote it down, but it's got lost in all my notes, I'm not sure where it is.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes, it is in fact goodness, Will is talking to us next

Matt Edmundson:

week about goodness come and join us next week as we carry on this wee

Matt Edmundson:

journey through the fruits of the Spirit.

Matt Edmundson:

We've got a couple more weeks on this.

Matt Edmundson:

Cause there's goodness, there's faithfulness.

Matt Edmundson:

You're doing that talk.

Matt Edmundson:

I think Dave's doing a talk.

Matt Edmundson:

I can't remember that.

Matt Edmundson:

I think Dan Orange is doing self control.

Matt Edmundson:

I can't remember the other fruit of the Spirit.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm really sorry.

Matt Edmundson:

Apparently I'm a church pastor and I can't remember all the fruits of the Spirit.

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway after that we are then jumping into identity in Christ as we carry

Matt Edmundson:

on this journey in spiritual health.

Matt Edmundson:

We're going to look at what it means to be in Christ Jesus and

Matt Edmundson:

how life changing that teaching is.

Matt Edmundson:

Sharon Edmundson: Definitely changed my life.

Matt Edmundson:

Yep.

Matt Edmundson:

And mine too.

Matt Edmundson:

So I'm very excited about that coming up.

Matt Edmundson:

So got some cracking stuff coming up.

Matt Edmundson:

Then over the summer in August, we're going to do the non live, just letting

Matt Edmundson:

you know what's going on, really got the non live streams coming up.

Matt Edmundson:

We're going to get some Psalms out there in August.

Matt Edmundson:

And then in September, we're going to start the next part of the whole thing.

Matt Edmundson:

We are going to start part two of the wholeness series.

Matt Edmundson:

Part one is spiritual health.

Matt Edmundson:

Part two is soul health, mind, will and emotions.

Matt Edmundson:

We're going to get into all those kind of things September, October time as well.

Matt Edmundson:

So very excited about what's coming up.

Matt Edmundson:

Some good topics, some meaty topics.

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway, anything else from you as we wrap up today's service?

Sharon Edmundson:

No, just thanks for joining us and for all your comments.

Sharon Edmundson:

Sorry we've not picked up on all of them.

Sharon Edmundson:

There were lots, so that's fab.

Sharon Edmundson:

Thanks.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

So I'm just, I don't know why I'm looking at this.

Matt Edmundson:

There's way too many comments, which is nice.

Matt Edmundson:

I it's better to have too many than too little.

Matt Edmundson:

Absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

So thank you so much for joining us here on Crowd Church.

Matt Edmundson:

It's been great fun.

Matt Edmundson:

Really enjoyed this conversation about kindness.

Matt Edmundson:

Go do your kindness challenge day.

Matt Edmundson:

Tell me what day of the week you're going to choose.

Matt Edmundson:

You've got a few seconds.

Matt Edmundson:

Write it in the comments.

Matt Edmundson:

Just pick a day which makes sense for you in the week.

Matt Edmundson:

What's your kindness day going to be?

Matt Edmundson:

And then start to plan it out.

Matt Edmundson:

What can you do that brings about the kindness of God to other people?

Matt Edmundson:

It doesn't have to be big.

Matt Edmundson:

Nicola proved that dog hoax.

Matt Edmundson:

Paying someone's toll on the M6.

Matt Edmundson:

They don't even have to involve cash.

Matt Edmundson:

Just kind words, but whatever it is, pick your kindness day

Matt Edmundson:

and let us know your stories.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm really intrigued.

Matt Edmundson:

It's been, yeah, it's been great.

Matt Edmundson:

So thank you so much for joining us.

Matt Edmundson:

Have a fantastic week wherever you are in the world.

Matt Edmundson:

That's it from me.

Sharon Edmundson:

Goodbye.

Matt Edmundson:

Sharon Edmundson:

Sharon Edmundson:

We were

Matt Edmundson:

so professional.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm out of words now.

Matt Edmundson:

That's it, is that it?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Fair enough.
