Matt Edmundson:

Beside me is are you warm yet?

Matt Edmundson:

You were cold.

Sadaf Beynon:

I'm much better.

Sadaf Beynon:

Thank you.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

We're recording this on a very actually we're saying it's cold.

Matt Edmundson:

It's cold inside, but actually outside it's really warm now.

Matt Edmundson:

Very nice outside.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

The sun is shining.

Matt Edmundson:

We should do an outdoor broadcast.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, well, actually I should say, if you're listening to the

Matt Edmundson:

audio, this is Sadaf next to me.

Matt Edmundson:

I know you can see it on the screen if you're watching the video

Matt Edmundson:

but yes, welcome to Podjunction.

Matt Edmundson:

You know what I'm going to do, true podcasting legend that I am, I'm

Matt Edmundson:

actually going to put my phone on do not disturb because I realized

Matt Edmundson:

I'd not done it before we started.

Matt Edmundson:

We should probably do a whole episode on that.

Matt Edmundson:

And that whole thing.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway, welcome.

Matt Edmundson:

Welcome to the show.

Matt Edmundson:

How was your weekend, by the way?

Matt Edmundson:

Was it a long time ago?

Sadaf Beynon:

It feels like a long time ago.

Matt Edmundson:

Or did something so bad happen that it required

Matt Edmundson:

that serious intake of breath?

Matt Edmundson:

Honestly, I

Sadaf Beynon:

can't remember it.

Matt Edmundson:

Always bring your attention to detail.

Sadaf Beynon:

I got to sleep in, I think,

Matt Edmundson:

which actually, I can't remember it.

Matt Edmundson:

That's a big deal with your kids.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Cause I can't imagine they're one for letting you sleep in.

Matt Edmundson:

Hudson,

Sadaf Beynon:

he's feels, seems like a teenager actually.

Sadaf Beynon:

He wakes up at like midday.

Sadaf Beynon:

Oh, wow.

Sadaf Beynon:

Lincoln's more like 7,

Matt Edmundson:

6.

Matt Edmundson:

30.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

It's more what I'd expect really.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

It's Lincoln.

Matt Edmundson:

It's Lincoln.

Matt Edmundson:

Hey Lincoln, how you doing?

Matt Edmundson:

What a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

What a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

What we got coming up today, apart from talking about your lying habits.

Matt Edmundson:

Anybody else got a lie in this weekend?

Matt Edmundson:

No.

Sadaf Beynon:

You like how we stopped just in case someone was going to respond.

Matt Edmundson:

People listening to the show are going yeah,

Matt Edmundson:

no, no one else got a line.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

So today we are back with Richard Brooks, part two.

Sadaf Beynon:

The legend.

Sadaf Beynon:

And he is talking about how actually podcasting isn't for

Sadaf Beynon:

everyone and it requires a passion.

Sadaf Beynon:

Ooh, controversial.

Sadaf Beynon:

For the medium.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's.

Sadaf Beynon:

In essence

Matt Edmundson:

what it is about.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

So do we not need to listen to the interview?

Sadaf Beynon:

No, you got it all Moving on.

Matt Edmundson:

No, it should be great.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

Cool.

Matt Edmundson:

So shall we run that?

Matt Edmundson:

No, I got a

Sadaf Beynon:

question for you first.

Sadaf Beynon:

You okay there?

Matt Edmundson:

Just smack the microphone into my chin.

Matt Edmundson:

We've got the We've got these new mic stands.

Matt Edmundson:

So the mic stands don't come across your face when you're talking on camera

Matt Edmundson:

and I just for whatever reason just decided to knock this one so the mic

Matt Edmundson:

just punched me right in the chin.

Matt Edmundson:

You just have to watch the video as Matt's teeth fall out.

Sadaf Beynon:

I

Matt Edmundson:

really need to get used to these.

Matt Edmundson:

Wow, that's awkward.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

For once, it's you and the microphone, not me.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

I've got mic issues.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay, so Matt, if you had to describe your podcasting style.

Sadaf Beynon:

In three adjectives, what would they be?

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, I hate these kinds of questions.

Matt Edmundson:

Three, what's an adjective?

Sadaf Beynon:

It describes a.

Sadaf Beynon:

You don't know, do you?

Sadaf Beynon:

No, hold on.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's coming.

Matt Edmundson:

English 101.

Matt Edmundson:

A noun.

Sadaf Beynon:

No?

Sadaf Beynon:

Or is it a verb?

Sadaf Beynon:

Adverb is a, describes a verb.

Sadaf Beynon:

So adjective describes a noun.

Matt Edmundson:

How would I describe my podcast?

Matt Edmundson:

What was my podcast style?

Matt Edmundson:

Your style.

Matt Edmundson:

My podcasting style.

Matt Edmundson:

Hopefully curious.

Matt Edmundson:

Does that work?

Matt Edmundson:

Does that work as a word?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, curious.

Matt Edmundson:

I like to be curious friendly, hopefully, try and be a little bit friendly I don't

Matt Edmundson:

know if I'd use the word entertaining because I don't It's not what I would

Matt Edmundson:

call a traditional form of entertainment, but I'm hoping that it does entertain.

Matt Edmundson:

It's actually enjoyable.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe that's a better word.

Matt Edmundson:

I want it to be enjoyable.

Matt Edmundson:

Nice.

Matt Edmundson:

So I don't know if that's actually reality or just what it is in my head.

Matt Edmundson:

No, this is my podcast is enjoyable.

Matt Edmundson:

It's curious and it's friendly and everyone else listening to it going,

Matt Edmundson:

Matt, no, not on any kind of level.

Matt Edmundson:

I should ask you the question, how would you describe my podcast style?

Matt Edmundson:

You don't have to use adjectives, by the way, you can use

Sadaf Beynon:

whatever word you like.

Sadaf Beynon:

No, I definitely think it's entertaining.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

Because you do listening in, I do laugh.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

Along with the jokes that you guys are making, even though I'm not there.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I definitely agree with you that you have an inquisitive mind, so you do dig.

Sadaf Beynon:

And yeah, and you just keep digging until you've had your fill and then you move

Matt Edmundson:

on.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, that's true.

Matt Edmundson:

In England, we just call that being nosy.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

You can use words like inquisitive and curious, because

Matt Edmundson:

it just makes it sound better.

Matt Edmundson:

But he's just nosy.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I'm just like, I'm just

Sadaf Beynon:

nosy, nosy, so and what was the other one you

Sadaf Beynon:

used, friendly, yeah, I think you definitely disarm your your guests.

Matt Edmundson:

One would hope so.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So you basically have just used the same three words I did.

Matt Edmundson:

I was

Sadaf Beynon:

just qualifying your I didn't actually pay any

Sadaf Beynon:

attention to your question.

Sadaf Beynon:

I went with my own.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay, I'll just

Matt Edmundson:

give you the same answer.

Matt Edmundson:

Very good.

Matt Edmundson:

Ladies and gentlemen listening in, how would you describe your podcast in style?

Matt Edmundson:

Use adjectives, add nouns, adverbs, verbs, whatever language you want to

Matt Edmundson:

use to describe your podcasting style.

Matt Edmundson:

It's an interesting thought though.

Matt Edmundson:

Well done, I like that question.

Matt Edmundson:

You're welcome.

Matt Edmundson:

Let's play the video.

Matt Edmundson:

Obviously podcasting's been good for you and your business, and I would say it's

Matt Edmundson:

been good for me and mine, definitely.

Matt Edmundson:

Do you think podcasting is right for everybody?

Rich Brooks:

Absolutely not.

Rich Brooks:

You mentioned, you made the joke about having a face for radio.

Rich Brooks:

Some people have a voice for newspaper, right?

Rich Brooks:

That's my joke, by the way.

Matt Edmundson:

I need that joke.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I like that.

Matt Edmundson:

That's very good.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm going to use that one.

Matt Edmundson:

Please go.

Rich Brooks:

No, first of all I don't think it's for every ind first, I don't

Rich Brooks:

think it's for every person because you really have to enjoy the platform.

Rich Brooks:

And I'm not just saying about being a consumer because I probably podcast

Rich Brooks:

produce more than I podcast consume.

Rich Brooks:

And to be honest, when I consume audio, like I'm driving down to

Rich Brooks:

pick up my daughter from college tomorrow, I'm going to be listening

Rich Brooks:

to the latest Jack Reacher book.

Rich Brooks:

That's generally how I like to consume.

Rich Brooks:

Audio is through stories and stuff like that, but the other piece of it is, Does

Rich Brooks:

your audience want to learn that way?

Rich Brooks:

And that becomes the trickier piece.

Rich Brooks:

So if you, there are industries where it's natural for somebody to listen to

Rich Brooks:

audio, to learn, to become informed, but there are other ones where it's

Rich Brooks:

a little bit of a tougher sell.

Rich Brooks:

For example my girlfriend's brother is a real estate, successful real

Rich Brooks:

estate agent down in Nashville.

Rich Brooks:

Tennessee.

Rich Brooks:

And he wanted to start a podcast.

Rich Brooks:

Now, if you think about a real estate podcast that's geared

Rich Brooks:

towards consumers, like that is not the customer journey, right?

Rich Brooks:

No one's like I'm looking for a new home.

Rich Brooks:

I'll go listen to an audio podcast like there's, that's

Rich Brooks:

not something that people do.

Rich Brooks:

But what he decided to do is he created a podcast with a friend of his

Rich Brooks:

that talks about food and nightlife.

Rich Brooks:

in Nashville Now, that's an interesting podcast, and that's something that a

Rich Brooks:

lot of people would want to tune into.

Rich Brooks:

All of a sudden, he becomes the go to guy for that nightlife, for the

Rich Brooks:

restaurants, for the lifestyle of Nashville, even though he's only

Rich Brooks:

been there for a few years, but now he's establishing his credibility.

Rich Brooks:

Some of that's going to spill over into people who are looking for homes,

Rich Brooks:

or maybe during their journey to find out more about Nashville, is this

Rich Brooks:

where I want to move, suddenly they're like, they discover this podcast.

Rich Brooks:

They find out that it's done by a local real estate agent who

Rich Brooks:

must know the area because he's literally doing a podcast on it.

Rich Brooks:

So if you love the idea of podcasting and you're like I don't know if it

Rich Brooks:

will work for my industry, you may have to get creative on the exact content

Rich Brooks:

that you're going to be talking about.

Rich Brooks:

I don't know that he's ever saying oh, I've got a great new house in a quiet

Rich Brooks:

neighborhood just outside of Nashville.

Rich Brooks:

He's just talking about the experience of living in Nashville.

Rich Brooks:

Yeah, which is a great positioning, I think, for his podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, it's very clever, actually a good way to

Matt Edmundson:

make it accessible, I think.

Matt Edmundson:

What sort of equipment have you invested in?

Matt Edmundson:

Have you spent a small fortune or is it all fairly standard?

Matt Edmundson:

I've

Rich Brooks:

not spent a small fortune and I started with a

Rich Brooks:

much, much smaller fortune.

Rich Brooks:

I think when I first started, I bought like a 30, headset

Rich Brooks:

USB plugged into my computer.

Rich Brooks:

I've always been a Mac guy, so I've always had GarageBand for the last 15, 20 years.

Rich Brooks:

So I just used that and I put it all together and I discovered

Rich Brooks:

Libsyn through my podcasting friends and that was a platform I used.

Rich Brooks:

So at the beginning, it was an investment of about 35 plus about

Rich Brooks:

10 to 15 a month in hosting fees.

Rich Brooks:

Now over time, and this is how I've always lived my life, like when I

Rich Brooks:

wondered if I wanted a road bike, I didn't go out and buy a 3, 000 road bike.

Rich Brooks:

I went down to the bike store, I found 100 bike that was 20 years old

Rich Brooks:

and I just started riding that to see if this was something I yeah.

Rich Brooks:

Absolutely.

Rich Brooks:

Clever, yeah.

Rich Brooks:

Now I have, off to my right, I've got a Roadmaster mixing board, which I

Rich Brooks:

literally never touch except to turn on because I don't know how to use it,

Rich Brooks:

and I've got a nice microphone here.

Rich Brooks:

I had my, I had a guy who no longer works here, but used to work in radio,

Rich Brooks:

and I'm like, set this up for me so I never have to think about it again, and

Rich Brooks:

he did, and I've got a nice boom mic just off the side those kind of things.

Rich Brooks:

Usually I have earbuds in, but I apparently left them at home

Rich Brooks:

today,so I'm using my old school.

Rich Brooks:

So I've invested more in overtimeabd obviously, using a service like

Rich Brooks:

Barevalue, even when I do think they very affordable, cost money.

Rich Brooks:

Having my team members, who could be doing billable work, work on my

Rich Brooks:

podcast costs money, all those things cost money but as far as like physical

Rich Brooks:

equipment goes, I moved from 35 for a microphone to about 115 for the Blue

Rich Brooks:

Yeti or whatever it was at the time.

Rich Brooks:

And now up to the Rodecaster where I think I spent close to 1, 000 on my

Rich Brooks:

current setup, but again, I didn't do that until I was like at episode 400.

Rich Brooks:

I think the thing is, you can get really good quality sound out of a 35 headset

Rich Brooks:

that you plug into your computer.

Rich Brooks:

Find out if you like this.

Rich Brooks:

Yeah.

Rich Brooks:

Find out if you've got the long term commitment for this before dropping a

Rich Brooks:

thousand, $1,500 or more on a true setup.

Matt Edmundson:

Welcome back.

Matt Edmundson:

Great conversation there from Rich.

Matt Edmundson:

You know what?

Matt Edmundson:

I really enjoyed talking to Rich.

Matt Edmundson:

Such a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

He keeps threatening to come over and we go for a pint.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

We're talking and I should take some video cameras and microphones when we do it,

Matt Edmundson:

cause it'll just be a great conversation.

Matt Edmundson:

But Rich is another guy that I met through podcasting.

Matt Edmundson:

Just you meet some really cool people and Rich is one of them with a podcasting.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

What'd you think?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Oops.

Matt Edmundson:

Sorry.

Matt Edmundson:

I see now you're smacking the name.

Matt Edmundson:

That's the problem, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Once you've got your pen

Sadaf Beynon:

in it.

Sadaf Beynon:

What do I think?

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

I liked what he said about positioning your or understanding

Sadaf Beynon:

how to position your podcast.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

And rather than, every like podcasting is fun instead of just jumping in though,

Sadaf Beynon:

like aligning your, what you enjoy with what your listeners actually want to hear.

Sadaf Beynon:

And then how do you position that so that you know you're getting value

Sadaf Beynon:

content that's value, that adds value Plus, yeah, you're enjoying

Matt Edmundson:

the process.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, that's very true.

Matt Edmundson:

And he gave that example, didn't he?

Matt Edmundson:

Of a friend that was a real estate.

Matt Edmundson:

Broker in, was it Nashville?

Matt Edmundson:

Nashville, yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And doing a podcast that wasn't about houses in Nashville.

Matt Edmundson:

, because he, you're right.

Matt Edmundson:

Understanding the customer journey was what he talked about, wasn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

. And it's just that's not what people want.

Matt Edmundson:

Positioning it in a way that made sense for.

Matt Edmundson:

I hope that was helpful.

Matt Edmundson:

It's

Sadaf Beynon:

It's

Matt Edmundson:

an interesting idea.

Matt Edmundson:

And I love what he said about that, actually.

Matt Edmundson:

I thought that was really good, but it's still a slightly controversial comment.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Was that actually podcasting is not for everybody.

Matt Edmundson:

What did you think to that?

Sadaf Beynon:

I thought that was great, actually.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's nice to hear something, so direct.

Matt Edmundson:

Because you're quite a black and white type person, aren't you?

Matt Edmundson:

You like yes and no's.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, for the most part.

Sadaf Beynon:

I like some grey areas too.

Sadaf Beynon:

I like I like ambiguity as well.

Sadaf Beynon:

Do you?

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

On any kind of level.

Matt Edmundson:

That's the end of the story.

Matt Edmundson:

We're going to get your husband on this podcast one day.

Matt Edmundson:

Spill the beans.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah you, so you like it.

Matt Edmundson:

Very definite.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm hitting the desk, by the way.

Matt Edmundson:

That's what that loud bang is in there.

Matt Edmundson:

Very professional.

Matt Edmundson:

Hit the desk.

Matt Edmundson:

Near your microphone.

Matt Edmundson:

Why, yes, apart from the fact

Sadaf Beynon:

it's black and white.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, I think I like, again, going back to what he said, why you should

Sadaf Beynon:

why you shouldn't, not everyone should have it because you've got to have

Sadaf Beynon:

a passion for what you're doing.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I think that's when you go the distance.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

And sometimes you can jump into stuff and it can be fun for a bit.

Sadaf Beynon:

But if you don't have, you don't know what you're doing or where you're

Sadaf Beynon:

heading you're, it's going to fall flat.

Sadaf Beynon:

And then, what

Matt Edmundson:

then?

Matt Edmundson:

Exactly.

Matt Edmundson:

Because podcasting excuse me, podcasting is all about longevity, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

And I think if you don't enjoy what you do, that's going to come across through

Matt Edmundson:

the microphone because you'll hear it.

Matt Edmundson:

I've listened to the podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

I was watching this Instagram video.

Matt Edmundson:

It's not podcast, but I was watching this guy, a tax accountant the

Matt Edmundson:

other day on Instagram came up and was just literally reading a script

Matt Edmundson:

and you could see his eyes going across in a very monotone voice.

Matt Edmundson:

Just reading a script about how directors should pay themselves.

Matt Edmundson:

And I was just laughing to myself, I thought, how in the world does

Matt Edmundson:

this guy think this is a good idea?

Matt Edmundson:

Because there was just no engagement.

Matt Edmundson:

It's just how you stereotypically perceived an accountant to be.

Matt Edmundson:

He was being on camera, no.

Matt Edmundson:

Tonality in his voice.

Matt Edmundson:

No, just boring on camera.

Matt Edmundson:

And you know what?

Matt Edmundson:

I made all kinds of judgments about this.

Matt Edmundson:

I thought this is not going to work for this guy, surely.

Matt Edmundson:

And then I saw that he'd had 15, 000 likes.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's other accountants.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's

Matt Edmundson:

the other accountants going, yes.

Matt Edmundson:

We finally got one of us on TV.

Matt Edmundson:

It's brilliant.

Matt Edmundson:

And you're doing a great job.

Matt Edmundson:

So it shows you what I know really, but I think that it

Matt Edmundson:

does come across in your voice.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think if you, unless you are an accountant or maybe, any other

Matt Edmundson:

profession that doesn't need to be interesting, I'm really sorry if

Matt Edmundson:

you're an accountant listening to this show, and I don't mean to offend you.

Matt Edmundson:

The only reason I can make fun of accountants is I technically am one.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, you are?

Matt Edmundson:

Little known fact by Matt.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I went and did accountancy at uni, got qualified, I didn't do all my

Matt Edmundson:

qualifications because after uni, doing it for three years at degree level, I

Matt Edmundson:

was like, I've had enough, never want to be an accountant really, but I will

Matt Edmundson:

say this, it did teach me everything I needed to know about money and figures,

Matt Edmundson:

very useful degree, very happy I did it, but that's an aside so yeah, unless

Matt Edmundson:

you really, I don't know, I don't know.

Matt Edmundson:

Occasionally, it is going to work if you are boring and monotone, but I

Matt Edmundson:

think if you have a passion that comes through on the microphone and it just

Matt Edmundson:

makes the show much more interesting.

Matt Edmundson:

Does that make sense?

Matt Edmundson:

It does.

Matt Edmundson:

Very good.

Matt Edmundson:

What about you?

Matt Edmundson:

In

Sadaf Beynon:

what sense?

Sadaf Beynon:

What

Matt Edmundson:

did you think?

Matt Edmundson:

About what Richard?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I thought it was all nonsense.

Sadaf Beynon:

Especially that part about just, investing slowly in equipment.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, especially that part, because that was the

Matt Edmundson:

bit where I was like, whatever, I just did not do that at all.

Matt Edmundson:

That's not actually true.

Matt Edmundson:

When we did our first podcast, you can see it in the behind us, we've mentioned this

Matt Edmundson:

before, the sound desk, the little sound desk we started out with, and I borrowed

Matt Edmundson:

some microphones from our local church.

Matt Edmundson:

Connected into that and thought let's have a go and then I bought some microphones.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, when you're in the studio with sound, it's not cheap.

Matt Edmundson:

But it is good.

Matt Edmundson:

But you have been

Sadaf Beynon:

doing this for a fair while

Matt Edmundson:

now.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I've definitely gone through the cycle.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, it was funny.

Matt Edmundson:

And it is, if you're like me and I totally get this.

Matt Edmundson:

If you're like me, when you start something new, you're

Matt Edmundson:

like, I am going to go all out.

Matt Edmundson:

I am going to, I have a budget, whatever the budget is, I'm going to

Matt Edmundson:

blow it because there's tech, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And there's tech and tech is shiny and tech is wonderful.

Matt Edmundson:

And that means I can do some really cool things.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah, if you're like me with that sort of shiny object syndrome,

Matt Edmundson:

podcasting is one of those things where you can get utterly carried away.

Matt Edmundson:

It's funny the amount of conversations I have with people who are thinking

Matt Edmundson:

of starting podcasts saying, you don't need that, you don't

Matt Edmundson:

need that, you don't need that.

Matt Edmundson:

But they're like, but Matt, you've got it.

Matt Edmundson:

And I'm like, yeah, but you

Sadaf Beynon:

don't need it.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, especially his part where he said, but

Matt Edmundson:

I agree with him actually.

Matt Edmundson:

The one thing that I would say is if you do start a podcast with

Matt Edmundson:

something like Apple AirPods and Zoom, which I've seen a lot of people do.

Matt Edmundson:

That I don't think is particularly great.

Matt Edmundson:

I think the one thing that I think you have to invest in, even from day

Matt Edmundson:

one, is a good quality USB microphone, right now because audio is everything.

Matt Edmundson:

It's better, it's more important, we've got a nice camera with a nice lens.

Matt Edmundson:

We've got nice lighting.

Matt Edmundson:

We're in a studio.

Matt Edmundson:

We've got the backdrop.

Matt Edmundson:

More important than all of that are the microphones that we use.

Matt Edmundson:

And without good audio, people just don't listen.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think you can get a good USB mic for 20, 30 bucks.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't think you need to necessarily spend more than that.

Matt Edmundson:

You can, Rode do a really nice microphone, the pod mic, which is now USB.

Matt Edmundson:

That's 200 bucks.

Matt Edmundson:

That's quite a bit of a leap.

Matt Edmundson:

But we got one of those for Jen.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, yeah, the Rooted Podcast and stuff like that, beautiful microphone.

Matt Edmundson:

So if you've got a few quid and you want to invest, that

Matt Edmundson:

is just a great mic to get.

Matt Edmundson:

But the rest of it, I agree with, I think you don't need to rush in, but don't just

Matt Edmundson:

do them on airpods because the sound gets compressed and it doesn't sound too great.

Matt Edmundson:

But that would be my only thing.

Matt Edmundson:

Use a USB mic.

Matt Edmundson:

Honestly, top tips but no, I loved what he said about passion.

Matt Edmundson:

I love what he said about how podcasting is not right for everybody.

Matt Edmundson:

I think you've got to enjoy it.

Matt Edmundson:

It's a complex medium in some ways.

Matt Edmundson:

It's a unique medium.

Matt Edmundson:

I think it's got some great opportunities, but it's not difficult.

Matt Edmundson:

I just think, I think you've got to be comfortable sitting in a

Matt Edmundson:

room by yourself talking a camera.

Matt Edmundson:

With a microphone as though you're talking to a crowd of 5, 000 people

Matt Edmundson:

now, I don't think you get that straight away does that make sense?

Matt Edmundson:

I think that's part of the craft which you hone So I don't think you need to be

Matt Edmundson:

there before you start Yeah, but you do have to get used to the idea the fact that

Matt Edmundson:

you are going to be talking to yourself Yeah, and some people call that crazy

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah

Matt Edmundson:

I just want to point that out.

Matt Edmundson:

So you're crazy if you talk to yourself.

Matt Edmundson:

But if you put a microphone in front of your mouth and talk to

Matt Edmundson:

yourself, people call you a podcaster.

Matt Edmundson:

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll leave you to make your own conclusions.

Sadaf Beynon:

I like that.

Sadaf Beynon:

And on that note.

Matt Edmundson:

I should, we should if I haven't got it on,

Matt Edmundson:

I haven't got a button to do it.

Matt Edmundson:

No.

Matt Edmundson:

I want to play Seal's Crazy.

Matt Edmundson:

The song by Seal.

Matt Edmundson:

Crazy.

Matt Edmundson:

Sorry, I just put that song in everyone's head and I apologize

Matt Edmundson:

for my really awful singing.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, have the passion.

Matt Edmundson:

So I like what Rich said, I thought, coming back to your original

Matt Edmundson:

question, I like what he said.

Matt Edmundson:

I didn't like what he said about not going to town on tech, that's just me.

Matt Edmundson:

But the rest of it, I thought was great.

Matt Edmundson:

I thought I, I just really enjoyed that whole interview.

Matt Edmundson:

If you've not joined the Podjunction Cohort, go check it out, go

Matt Edmundson:

check out the full interview and really have a listen to it.

Matt Edmundson:

It's.

Matt Edmundson:

It's just utterly insightful, the stuff that comes from Rich and do connect

Matt Edmundson:

with him because he's such a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

And if you haven't done so already, check out his podcast, Agents of Change.

Matt Edmundson:

It's a great marketing book.

Matt Edmundson:

I really enjoy listening to it.

Matt Edmundson:

So, yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Anything else on that?

Matt Edmundson:

Nope.

Matt Edmundson:

Not for me.

Matt Edmundson:

Not for me.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

What's coming up next week?

Sadaf Beynon:

In the next episode, I think it's Nick Trueman.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's going to be Nick Trueman.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, it's going to be Nick Trueman , isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Another legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Another legend.

Matt Edmundson:

He messaged me a little while ago.

Matt Edmundson:

He said, Matt, I'm in Liverpool.

Matt Edmundson:

Do you fancy going and getting a pizza?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So we went and grabbed a pizza.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, cool.

Matt Edmundson:

And we just chatted for an hour and a half, I wish I'd recorded

Matt Edmundson:

that as well, such a legend that guy, really enjoyed that, learned

Matt Edmundson:

a lot about him, which was cool.

Matt Edmundson:

So do tune in for the conversation with Nick Trueman next week as we carry on

Matt Edmundson:

our conversation around podcasting, how to use it to grow your business

Matt Edmundson:

and all of that sort of good stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

Matt Edmundson:

Matt Edmundson:

We'll see you next week.
