Melissa Brown:

If you struggle to come up with a word of the year

Melissa Brown:

for yourself, just keep it simple.

Melissa Brown:

I think it's easy at the beginning of a new year to get overwhelmed by

Melissa Brown:

planning to take on way too much and set your expectations as if you're going

Melissa Brown:

to morph into Wonder Woman overnight.

Melissa Brown:

And we all know that only serves to set you up to burn out, and then

Melissa Brown:

you give up on your resolutions and goals, and your word of the year.

Melissa Brown:

Hello there, Content Creators.

Melissa Brown:

Let's dive in with today's episode because you've got content to get out there.

Melissa Brown:

Hey, welcome back to another episode of the She's Got Content Podcast.

Melissa Brown:

Before we get into our topic for today, I want to give a big, thank

Melissa Brown:

you and a shout out to our Content Creator of the week, Thousand XD,

Melissa Brown:

who left a review on Apple Podcast.

Melissa Brown:

They wrote this review,

Melissa Brown:

"Melissa truly gets it, when it comes to content marketing, we're shaping

Melissa Brown:

the world with every word we publish.

Melissa Brown:

I love the podcast and I have really enjoyed the guests

Melissa Brown:

sharing their experience.

Melissa Brown:

It's inspiring."

Melissa Brown:

Well, thank you so much for those kind words, Thousand XD.

Melissa Brown:

That means so much to me.

Melissa Brown:

And I have to tell you, you inspire me too!

Melissa Brown:

Now let's get into our content for this week.

Melissa Brown:

And this week is that weird week or what I call a limbo week where it's sandwiched

Melissa Brown:

in between the Christmas holiday and the start of a new year on New Year's Day.

Melissa Brown:

You've probably got kids home from school and maybe you've got grandkids

Melissa Brown:

doing a sleep over, or you might have relatives still staying with you.

Melissa Brown:

And some of you may be lucky enough to be getting away from it all and

Melissa Brown:

you're out of town on a holiday.

Melissa Brown:

And somewhere in the midst of all of this post-Christmas and pre New Year's

Melissa Brown:

Day, you're likely doing some end of the year reflections planning for the

Melissa Brown:

year ahead and mapping out a roadmap for where you'd like to be in 2023.

Melissa Brown:

All the emails in my inbox this week, they're talking about

Melissa Brown:

goals; setting goals, smart goals, money goals, launch goals.

Melissa Brown:

And new year's resolutions, big projects, small ones.

Melissa Brown:

And well, Friends, you could reflect back on the year that's ending by going

Melissa Brown:

through a very extensive checklist or a lot of journal prompts about important

Melissa Brown:

lessons you've learned during the year, creating a list of the people

Melissa Brown:

you met, people you collaborated with, and those you're grateful for.

Melissa Brown:

You could go through all your business numbers and run

Melissa Brown:

reports and fill up notebooks.

Melissa Brown:

And while that's all well and good to have all that information and that

Melissa Brown:

data, I like to keep it simple with this traditional year end transition.

Melissa Brown:

I can run all those other data points at any point of the year.

Melissa Brown:

Here's what I like to do during this very last week of the year, even though this

Melissa Brown:

year I confess I've already started some of these steps in the past few weeks.

Melissa Brown:

So it's not all waiting until this limbo week.

Melissa Brown:

Here are my four steps to make my year end transition, and I

Melissa Brown:

have a new bonus one at the end.

Melissa Brown:

Step number one for the year end transition is when I reflect on my

Melissa Brown:

outgoing year's word of the year.

Melissa Brown:

And I ask myself how it went with that word.

Melissa Brown:

Did it help me improve things in my life.

Melissa Brown:

And how did that happen?

Melissa Brown:

I then choose a new word for the upcoming year.

Melissa Brown:

Sort of a theme for me to focus on for the entire year.

Melissa Brown:

I'll use that as a lens to filter all my planning and all I do in the coming year.

Melissa Brown:

My word for 2022 was simplify.

Melissa Brown:

And yeah, that didn't go over so well this year as an overall theme.

Melissa Brown:

Somewhere after about the first quarter or so of 2022, I more or

Melissa Brown:

less set aside and forgot all about that word and the theme for the year.

Melissa Brown:

Sorta went the way of most new year's resolutions.

Melissa Brown:

It was just left by the wayside and not really adopted.

Melissa Brown:

The way this usually works best for me to keep that word of the year top of

Melissa Brown:

mind is to keep it in my visual sights.

Melissa Brown:

For instance, the year I made a laminated bookmark with my word

Melissa Brown:

drawn and colored as artwork on that bookmark, that year, I was constantly

Melissa Brown:

reminded of my word whenever I picked up the book I happened to be reading.

Melissa Brown:

I also usually write the word on sticky notes to remind myself, and

Melissa Brown:

I put those around my computer, on the bathroom mirror, in my car,

Melissa Brown:

although I rarely drive anywhere anymore, especially in the winter.

Melissa Brown:

And I write it in my planner and my calendar, where I look at it all the time.

Melissa Brown:

I forgot to do that last year.

Melissa Brown:

Some of the things that I also plan to add to keeping that word top

Melissa Brown:

of mind is to have it appear in my writing journal this year-- like on

Melissa Brown:

the cover of my writing journal or on a sticky note, or written on an index

Melissa Brown:

card and just placed in the journal.

Melissa Brown:

I can create a sign with the word and put that inside my closet so it's seen

Melissa Brown:

every time I open up the closet and I pick out my clothes for the day.

Melissa Brown:

So in this new year, I'm not going to drop the ball on my new word.

Melissa Brown:

So I've got plans to keep that word top of mind by doing those things and

Melissa Brown:

making sure I'm constantly reminded.

Melissa Brown:

That way I can continue to just check in and see.

Melissa Brown:

Am I remaining true to my word of the year?

Melissa Brown:

If you struggle to come up with a word of the year for

Melissa Brown:

yourself, just keep it simple.

For 2023, the word of the year that came to me immediately was implementation.

Melissa Brown:

And that's because I feel like I've spent a lot of time learning the how

Melissa Brown:

tos for a lot of things, although I put less time putting those into action.

Melissa Brown:

So I recognize that that needs to change.

Melissa Brown:

And while I'll never quit learning, there comes a time to slow the roll on lots

Melissa Brown:

of new courses and instead, take aligned action and implement what's been learned.

Melissa Brown:

Now to add a little confusion to this process of choosing a word, last month

Melissa Brown:

my mastermind group read a book by Donald Miller titled Business Made

Simple:

60 Days to Master Leadership, Sales, Marketing, Execution, Management,

Simple:

Personal Productivity, and More.

Simple:

I know that's a mouthful.

Simple:

Let's just call it Business Made Simple.

Simple:

One of the final chapters in the book was about execution.

Simple:

So this concept of execution gave me pause with thinking about,

Simple:

well, what's the difference between implementation versus execution?

Simple:

And I think the distinction between the words, those two words is worth noting.

Simple:

According to dictionary.com, implement means to put into effect according to or

Simple:

by means of a definite plan or procedure.

Simple:

So basically implement means to begin to put into action to set

Simple:

on, to start a course of action.

Simple:

To begin.

Simple:

According to that same source, dictionary.com, execute means

Simple:

to perform or accomplish something as an assigned task.

Simple:

So, the word execute means to see through to completion.

Simple:

I've been thinking about that distinction as it might apply to the chosen word of

Simple:

the year implement or implementation.

Simple:

And I think I really intend to implement and execute this year.

Simple:

It's not just about putting into action but to also see it through to completion.

Simple:

And so because of that, I actually have two words for 2023.

Simple:

The root word, implement and implementation.

Simple:

And the root word execute and execution.

Simple:

I feel like I'm really excited about these words and by keeping them top of

Simple:

mind, I know that's going to help keep me focused on the doing and completing that

Simple:

I want to accomplish in this next year.

Simple:

In addition, I've also started to pick out a skill to focus

Simple:

on during each coming year.

Simple:

In past years, I focused on improving skills like copywriting, email marketing.

Simple:

In 2023, I want to focus on building habits.

Simple:

Two habits I want to get down solid this next year are the

Simple:

exercise habit and a writing habit.

Simple:

I really got off track with exercise over the past year.

Simple:

And I feel it.

Simple:

So that's going to become a big focus for me in 2023.

Simple:

I want to write even more than I do, so starting a habit or a

Simple:

routine for writing is the way I'm going to be able to do that.

Simple:

Connie Ragen Green was my guest on the podcast in episode 13.

Simple:

And she spoke about how she developed her writing habit by sitting

Simple:

down to just write every morning.

Simple:

And over the years, Connie has written over 25 books and she's still going

Simple:

strong writing at least a book a year.

Simple:

She writes blog posts for multiple blogs, regular emails to her

Simple:

audience, screenplays and more.

Simple:

So I'll tap into another book that my mastermind group read this

Simple:

year to make these habits stick.

Simple:

And that book was Atomic Habits by James Clear.

Simple:

If you haven't read that book yet, I highly recommend you run

Simple:

out and you get your hands on it.

Simple:

If you've already read it, now might be a good time to reread

Simple:

it and use these principles.

Simple:

The principles inside that he teaches to set yourself up for inevitable success.

Simple:

Now onto step two.

Simple:

It's easy to describe step two, but it usually takes a lot

Simple:

more time than the other steps.

Simple:

In this step, I spend some time reflecting back over the year, month by month.

Simple:

I usually have to jog my memory for each month, especially

Simple:

earlier months of the year.

Simple:

So I need to pull out my calendar or my planner and go through the pages.

Simple:

I go through emails I wrote for the year.

Simple:

I look at products, coaching and courses I signed up for.

Simple:

When and where did I do speaking engagements?

Simple:

What products did I release for sale?

Simple:

And going back through my business expenses and income for this too.

Simple:

I started out in January 2022 doing this look back at the end of each

Simple:

month and writing a summary for myself.

Simple:

But somewhere in the second quarter of the year, I got away from doing

Simple:

that at the end of each month.

Simple:

I just sort of forgot about it one month and much like the word of

Simple:

the year for 2022, it just sort of faded into the background.

Simple:

So this is something that needs to be inked into my calendar, part of

Simple:

working on some habits so it becomes routine at the end of the month.

Simple:

That's going to make it easier to do the year end reflection so I can just

Simple:

look back at each monthly summary.

Simple:

Once I go through each month by month, I ask myself, over the

Simple:

course of the year, what went well?

Simple:

These things need to be acknowledged and celebrated.

Simple:

These are the wins.

Simple:

We, or maybe I should say I ,do too little of that thing.

Simple:

Really standing back and acknowledging and celebrating.

Simple:

So only after that's completely savored will I list out all the

Simple:

wins as something I'll consider doing more of in the coming year.

Simple:

And then I ask myself, what didn't go well?

Simple:

And if I can figure out the cause, why didn't it go well?

Simple:

Why did that happen that way?

Simple:

And maybe I've already done the analysis at the time if something didn't go right

Simple:

but by reflecting back and having a little distance of time, sometimes it's

Simple:

easier to see why things did not go well.

Simple:

I can then decide whether to tweak it or improve that thing and add it into the

Simple:

coming year to see if I can improve it, or is it something to let go of and move on?

Simple:

I will then filter any of the things I want to keep and put

Simple:

into 2023, filter it through step three, before I schedule anything.

Simple:

Now on to step three, I answer this question; what do I want to create more

Simple:

of in the world in this coming new year?

Simple:

So that gets incorporated into my big picture for the year.

Simple:

I'm more of a quarterly planner, but I like to have the big picture in

Simple:

place for the year as an overall goal.

Simple:

That's why I create that theme or word of the year first too.

Simple:

To complete this step three, I start with planning annual goals for income.

Simple:

And look at the different events or products or

Simple:

offerings I'm planning to make.

Simple:

I can then break down and estimate income through each quarter, based

Simple:

on the projects I have planned.

Simple:

Further breaking down the projects, the events, the offerings into

Simple:

quarterly, monthly, weekly, or maybe even daily actions to reach

Simple:

those goals is the next step.

Simple:

In 2023, I'm going to be using a new spreadsheet for these goals.

Simple:

That's a stretch for me since I don't usually use one for this type of planning.

Simple:

I often say I'm allergic to spreadsheets.

Simple:

So, wish me luck with this piece.

Simple:

I'll let you know how it goes.

Simple:

And then we come to step four, the last step.

Simple:

That's where I ask myself, what did I let go of during the past year?

Simple:

And that's followed by, what else do I still need to let go of?

Simple:

And for me, this is more about a personal letting go since I've already looked

Simple:

at the things I wanted to let go of in my business offerings in step two.

Simple:

There's been a recurring answer in the letting go category for me and that

Simple:

has to do with clutter in my office.

Simple:

This past year has seen a huge change in that space as I did let go of a

Simple:

lot of old papers and memorabilia, and I cleaned things out from that room.

Simple:

Have to admit it's still got a ways to go, but little by little,

Simple:

there is, and has been improvement.

Simple:

In addition to possessions, letting go might look like releasing

Simple:

weight, letting go of relationships, letting go of the need to be

Simple:

right, or setting old habits free.

Simple:

I'm still thinking about this and doing some reflection on what else

Simple:

I think I might like to let go of.

Simple:

And that's it for my year end planning process during this last week of the year.

Simple:

It's simple.

Simple:

It's effective for me.

Simple:

And it doesn't usually take tons of time to go through the steps.

Simple:

Okay.

Simple:

Let's recap.

Simple:

Step one is to review the last year's word of the year and choose a new word

Simple:

or a theme for the upcoming new year.

Simple:

Step two is to do a month by month review of the year and answer the question, what

Simple:

went well and what didn't go so well.

Simple:

And why.

Simple:

Step three is to ask and answer, what do I want to create more of in the world?

Simple:

And step number four is when I ask myself, what did I let go of in the past year?

Simple:

And what else do I still need to let go of?

Simple:

And I promised you a bonus.

Simple:

So this year, there's one more thing I'm adding to this year-end reflection.

Simple:

I did this in a planning session earlier this month with a group

Simple:

I'm in and it totally blew my mind.

Simple:

This is so powerful.

Simple:

After all your planning for this next year is over.

Simple:

Write yourself a letter.

Simple:

Well, you can write a letter to yourself or just it could

Simple:

be a statement to the universe.

Simple:

And use this prompt, oh, my gosh, it's December, 2023.

Simple:

Can you believe

Simple:

. . . . ? And then you just fill in stating

Simple:

out as if they've all been hit.

Simple:

And more.

Simple:

And then just go through them and how you feel having reached all of those

Simple:

achievements and allow for even more.

Simple:

And when I say, allow for even more, let's say you set your yearly income

Simple:

goal for a hundred thousand dollars.

Simple:

And you would say during this letter to yourself or the universe,

Simple:

Can you believe that I have earned over a hundred thousand

Simple:

dollars in the year of 2023?

Simple:

So you want to allow for even more abundance with this goal setting by not

Simple:

just saying you hit a specific number.

Simple:

Hope that makes sense.

Simple:

Okay, so there you have it.

Simple:

A simple way to transition from the current year to the next.

Simple:

And by all means, go ahead and adopt this year- end transition plan if you'd like.

Simple:

If you already have a planning process, keep using what's working for you though.

Simple:

And keep this in mind with all of these plans and goals you're making,

Simple:

there's one thing you definitely want to make sure you've got in place.

Simple:

And that's to make sure you set yourself up with accountability.

Simple:

You'll drastically increase your odds for success when you create a regular check-in

Simple:

with an accountability partner or a group.

Simple:

This way, things aren't slipping through the cracks and you're less likely to

Simple:

procrastinate and put things off when someone is holding your feet to the fire

Simple:

to do what you say you're going to do.

Simple:
