Summary
Have you ever looked at the heavy, dark cloud hovering over your mind or your teenager's mind and asked: is depression spiritual warfare? When you are utterly exhausted from just trying to "pray it away," it is a heartbreaking situation. You want to know if you are dealing with a physical, medical issue or a literal attack from the enemy.
Do not give up hope; you are in the exact right place! In this episode of the Arise Women of God podcast, host Tamara K. Anderson is joined by Licensed Clinical Social Worker Wendi Christensen to answer this critical question. We explore the "Exacerbation Effect"—how the adversary exploits our genetics, physical exhaustion, and chemical imbalances to make a true clinical condition significantly worse.
Tamara also shares her personal journey as a mother on the frontlines, explaining why getting her children on the right medication was a game-changer, but how medicine alone could not solve the spiritual battle. Discover why the Christian myth of "just pray harder" is dangerous, how to practically treat the physical body (sleep, nutrition, exercise), and how to actively use the name of Jesus Christ to cast out the spirit of depression today!

Hey, my friend, have you ever wondered, is depression spiritual warfare because you or someone you love is trapped under a heavy dark cloud and you're exhausted from just trying to pray it away?
This is a difficult and heartbreaking situation because you want to know if you're dealing with a physical medical issue or a literal attack from the enemy. Well, don't give up hope. You are in the right place.
And by the end of today's episode, you'll know how to tell when the enemy is exacerbating a true chemical imbalance, how to treat the physical body, and how to break the dark frequencies that may be disturbing you and your home. Stay tuned. Ordinary women, extraordinary faith. When God calls, we say yes. Hello, and welcome back to the Arise Women of God podcast.
I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson, and I'm so thrilled to have the wonderful Wendy Christiansen joining me today as we tackle this heavy question. Is depression spiritual warfare?
And the reason I'm glad Wendy is here is because she has over 30 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker, and she happens to be an amazing mom and fellow warrior of light. And today, we're breaking down three critical pillars.
First, the exacerbation effect, how the adversary exploits our genetics and physical exhaustion. Second, the mother's front line, my personal story of combining clinical medicine with spiritual warfare.
And third, the King Saul principle, how to use light to break up the spirit of heaviness. But let's begin by answering this big question about depression and spiritual warfare directly.
As a clinical professional, Wendy sees this kind of interaction every single day. Let's listen to her explain how the enemy targets us when our physical bodies are compromised.
Wendi Christensen:Depression can be many different things. It can be a genetic tendency that is actually, you know, if you've got it in your family line, it can carry through your genes.
So it absolutely can be a genetic thing. There are different types, many different types of depression.
Some of those like, for example, bipolar, you, you really do need to get some treatment for some medication combined with some therapy. But can depression also be spiritual warfare? Absolutely it can. It can be Satan attacking.
Satan likes to take something that's already there and exacerbate it and make it worse. And he absolutely does that with depression. I've seen it with new moms and postpartum depression.
He's going to attack them when they're exhausted and tired and so overwhelmed. But such an important time, right, for this brand new baby and bringing this new little spirit into the world.
He will attack them with that depression. And so sometimes it's kind of hard to know the difference.
I would just pretty much guarantee that even if it's a genetic depression, he's also probably working on you and attacking it and making it worse. That's. That's kind of the way he works, is he'll take whatever we're dealing with and he'll make it worse.
So it's important, I think, to notice when I'm feeling really overwhelmed, I'm feeling exhausted, I'm feeling tired, and especially if you're feeling not like yourself, that's probably the thing I hear the most. That kind of indicates to me, oh, somebody, they're being attacked by Satan.
When they come in, somebody in my office will sit down and say, hey, I'm just not feeling myself. I feel exhausted. And depression does that anyways.
But then you're feeling maybe more moody than you usually are or feeling really off and not your typical self. Your moods, not only are they like a little kid roller coaster, they're like a massive adult roller coaster. Right. With your moods. Absolutely.
He's exacerbating it, so I would just count on it. And there's nothing wrong with just casting out Satan when you're dealing with depression, because depression is hard and difficult and it's heavy.
And I. I don't think that the God, that God really wants us to be depressed, but he knows it's a side effect, it's a consequence, it's a result of living here. There's just so many beautiful things that you can do as far as treating depression.
But I would also, in the back of my mind, be getting rid of Satan because, you know, he's exacerbating it. And you can just easily say, I have my clients just say, in the name of Jesus Christ, I command the spirit of depression to leave.
I cast it out and I cast it away from me, Especially if you're having a hard day.
Tamara K. Anderson:I completely agree with what Wendy just shared, and I want to speak directly to the mom who's in the trenches right now. I have a couple of siblings and children who have battled deep depression.
And I have learned that while depression may absolutely be a chemical imbalance, as loved ones, we are also helping them wage a fierce battle against the adversary. Getting my children on the right medication was a game changer for each of them. But medicine alone did not solve the spiritual battle.
There were so many times when I sat there right beside them, helping them counter the negative swirling voices in their heads with absolute truth of their identity. You are a child of God. You have worth and value. There is hope and there is healing ahead.
I taught them how to cast out the adversary in the name of Jesus Christ and bring in light.
And when I physically couldn't be in the room with them because perhaps they were away or up at school, I taught them to call on ministering angels in their hardest moments. Just like an angel came and ministered to Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane in his hardest moment.
This battle is real because every soul is precious in the eyes of God.
But my friends, there is a dangerous myth in Christian culture that if you just read your Bible enough and pray fervently with all your soul, that depression will magically vanish. Let's listen to Wende shatter this myth and explain exactly how to combine physical habits with spiritual eviction.
Wendi Christensen:Another thing I hear a lot too is people will say, well, if you just read your scriptures every day, if you just pray every day, you, your depression will go away. No, you need to treat it. You need to make sure. I'm looking at it through a lens of am I physically doing what I need to? Am I getting sleep?
Is my sleep effective? Because if you're not getting sleep, that will add to depression. Is my nutrition good?
If you're not eating well, that will give you brain fog and that will also make it difficult and even hydrating. Well. Exercise is actually one of the number one things for depression.
Like you need to be able to do these things that are important, taking care of that mental health and that mental well being. Along with getting rid of the spiritual warfare, prayer and scriptures can give you more light.
They can boost and help add to the light that your body is craving and needing. When you're dealing with depression, they don't take it away, but they can definitely battle it.
They're tools in the battle against depression to give you more light as well as completely casting it out and casting it away from you.
Tamara K. Anderson:I love how Wendy phrased that prayer and scriptures don't instantly cure the chemical imbalance, but they add the light your body is craving. We see this exact combination of spiritual heaviness and the need for light.
In the Old Testament, King Saul was plagued by a chronic oppressive spirit of heaviness and distressing thoughts that left him completely paralyzed. Human logic couldn't fix it, so his servants brought in young David to play the harp.
The beautiful music and praise broke the heaviness and darkness in Saul's mind, bringing him immediate emotional and spiritual relief. If your home feels heavy, you can change that same frequency.
Play worship music, speak truth, stand on the promises found in Isaiah, chapter 61, verse 3, where God indeed promises to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. So, my friend, you do not have to keep wearing that garment of heaviness that the enemy is trying to lash upon you.
If you're ready to trade that spirit of heaviness and actively defend your family's mental and spiritual health, Wendy and I have a powerful tool that we would love to give you. It's our A Mother's Spiritual Defense Guide 6 Empowering Steps to Fortify Home and Family, and it's completely free at the link below.
When you get your booklet, we invite you to turn to step number four, Cast out and Calm Down. You can learn right there how to command the spirit of a depression to leave your home and family.
Just like Wende talked about today, it is incredibly practical and it will help you reclaim light in your own household. Well, my dear friend, as we conclude this episode, remember that you are a divine child of God. He loves you.
He won't leave you alone to fight these heavy battles on your own. Cling to Jesus and He will help you. And until next time, may you arise. Do it God's way. God Strong.
