Shownotes

We’ve talked a lot about choosing Wordpress over other platforms, but something else you’ll need to decide is where to host your website. Unlike Squarespace or Kajabi, your Wordpress site can be hosted in many different places and you’ll have to choose which one you’ll use.

In this episode, we’ll talk about what to consider when choosing your hosting provider. Some factors include:

  • Pricing
  • Bandwidth
  • Memory
  • Backups
  • Traffic capacity
  • Security measures

Your clients and potential clients don’t have time for 404 errors. It’s not about planning for the business you are today, it’s about planning for the business that you see in the future.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Hello, hello, hello and welcome to episode eight,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

season two of More Than a Brand.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Y'all.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

If y'all been listening this season, you know that I've been going step by step

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

of the website process of WordPress, of how to get to point A to point B.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I gave you, the tools, the HelloFresh for your website on what all you need.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But today I wanna get into hosting because hosting is, I.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now last episode I spoke about finding our home in Crownsville, where our,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

uh, real estate agent told us that when she would sell us the homes or

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

when she would look at home, she would say, well, the basement with it being

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

unfinished is something you can grow into.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But I wanna look outside the.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And when you're looking to a space to actually live now, there are

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

so many different counties and that you can live in and under.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

There's different things that people look for, depending on

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

what your family situation is.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Some people don't wanna have to drive, so they'd rather live in the city where they

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

can just walk to where they want to go.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

For people that have kids, specifically me and my family, the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

school system was very important.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

When it came to choosing where to live, schools played a huge factor in what home

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

we chose and what county we lived in.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Rather, it was, the college acceptance rates in the different schools, what the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

grade was on the, uh, the school list.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

The, diversity ratio, the student to teacher ratio, the graduation rate,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

all this stuff went into account when choosing where we wanted to live and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

then choosing the right home, the right area for our home to be in.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

The same goes for your hosting when you are building a WordPress site.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I mentioned in last episode that with WordPress that you are hosting isn't

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

paid necessarily through WordPress.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

When you do wordpress.org now wordpress.com, that's something different.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But with the native WordPress, you can by hosting through anyone.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Well, when it comes to choosing who your hosting is, I want you to take

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

some things into a consideration when you choose whichever one you want to.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now, pricing, most of them have very similar prices.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

When it comes to WordPress.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It really depends on what you're looking for, but the pricing

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

can range from anywhere from.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

$5 a month to $25 a month.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It really depends on how robust your WordPress site is.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So I wouldn't necessarily just judge based on pricing.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Cause there's very slight variation between the pricing of the different

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

hosting platforms for WordPress.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But what I do want you to think about when you're digging into which host to go with

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

for your WordPress site is number one, I want you to think about how much bandwidth

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

are you going to get, how much memory are you going to have on your website?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

you're probably sitting here thinking, What does bandwidth mean

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

when it comes to your website?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So bandwidth basically is how much information can get

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

from your site to the server.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So if you have one of these huge sites, then you want more bandwidth

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

because you have more information that needs to reach back to that server.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Are people gonna get that crazy for, for code and nobody wants that.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Another thing you need to think about when you are deciding on which hosting platform

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

to go with for your WordPress website.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Is backups.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I cannot express enough how important backups are.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I don't know how many times I have had a call or a DM like my side is

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

down and I don't know how to get my backup, or my side is down and my

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

hosting platforms that they would do backups, but I don't have access to it.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Backups are your.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Lifeline when your website crashes.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

If your hosting platform does not give you backups, or if they back it up and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

you don't have access to it, or if it's not a frequent backup, I'm telling you,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

if they're not backing up at least once a.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Then you don't wanna go with them because anytime you make a change to

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

your site, if you don't have a backup and if you have to, Upload from the last

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

time it was backed up, you'll lose some of that information and some of that

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

data that, some of those things that you changed cuz the backup is outdated.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So yes, you want to check on the backup, you want to check on the bandwidth, and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

you also want to check on the memory.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So memory is how much memory do you have for your website in particular?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So if you know that you have these huge files that you wanna host on

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

your website, then you definitely want to have something, have a

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

hosting platform that allows you, or a plan on a hosting platform that

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

allows you to have more memory so that you don't run into those crazy.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Four or four codes.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Those codes where people are like, people cannot get to your website

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

because you've used up too much memory.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Another thing to look at when you are looking at your hosting is visitors.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now we all want 50 million visitors to come to our site all the time, but is your

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

site equipped for 50 million visitors?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Did you pay for 50 million visitors to be able to go to your site?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

If not, and you know that you're getting to the point where your site is gonna

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

be overwhelmed and overwhelmed with visitors and that is a good thing.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But you need to think about that when you're thinking about your hosting.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

How many times have we heard about sites crashing?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Because too many people on the site.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That's because the company or the person that created the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

site didn't take into the.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

How many people would actually come to it?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It makes no sense to have a website that people can't get to when things

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

are on and popping and they are trying to get to it, it makes no sense to

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

have a site that's not equipped for the influx of people that you're gonna have.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

These Twitter streets will drag you, okay?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Twitter will drag you.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

These internet streets are unforgiving and they will drag you if you start

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

sending people to a website and you get so popular that your website hosts

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

cannot accommodate all the people coming cuz you didn't think about.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So, like I said in the last episode, think about where you want to be when

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

it comes to deciding on what website platform to use and specifically

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

what hosting platform to use.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Cuz if you don't, you are going to have your visitors running into problems and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

you are gonna have problems cuz your site's gonna be crashing and nobody wants.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Another thing to think about when we're getting to the hosting,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

same as you would with your house.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You want to think about security.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

What security measures are in place.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Cuz what you don't want is somebody hacking your sighting.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That shit going down, that's not a good look.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Once that thing is hacked, once it has, I don't know how much malware

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

then it's only so much you can.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now, good thing about some hosting is that they provide malware service for you.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So if you suspect there's some malware on your website, then they go in, they'll

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

find it, fixed it, and get rid of it.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You can't ask for anything better, but you wanna have some tools in place

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

that when you decide on which website to go with, which hosting platform to

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

go with, that you are able to keep it.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That is protected.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That is in a good neighborhood.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That it's gonna get into the best H B C U or the Ivy League

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

school that it wants to get into.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That's why it's important to choose your hosting wisely when you're stepping

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

into these D E I spaces and your website is not equipped to take on the influx

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

of people that's going to your site to hold all the memory or to send that.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

amount of data it needs to send back to the servers, your potential client.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

These corporations don't have time for a 4 0 4 era.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They will leave my friend.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So when choosing your hosting platform, think about those things.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It's not about planning for the you are today.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It's about planning for the business that you see yourself in the future.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I'm a fan of Rachel Rogers.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Hello.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Seven has been rebranded a couple times and sh her tech be, and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

anytime that Rachel has a big launch.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I've known, cause I'm in her group, that she has her tech people on

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

standby and somebody can come up and say, Hey Rachel, this thing isn't

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

working on a, in a Facebook post.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

She'll tag the tech person and they're on it because your tech has to be teching.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

If you know you don't have that ongoing 24 7 support, You need to

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

pick the correct platform and pick the correct hosting so that you don't

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

have to worry about those issues.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I give you another organization that is huge that everybody knows is the Army.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

The Army has just launched a new platform and that thing is on

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

WordPress because I got, yeah, I have gotten several server errors.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Let's put that out there.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Mm-hmm.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And it says WordPress, but when it came to building this new platform, I'm

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

not sure how they chose the provider.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And I'm not even sure who built it.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But what I do know is that was not, it is not.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

At this moment equipped to take on the influx of users that it gets because

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

that thing be crashing all the time and there's always a server error and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

there's a lot of data that's going back to whatever server that the Army is

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

using, and it is overloading the system.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

People make mistakes, but I'm here so you don't have to make those mistakes.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You can be the Rachel Rogers and have the people around the clock and make sure the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

tech is teching and being forward thinking and strategizing when it comes to creating

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

your website and choosing your hosting and choosing the platform that you wanna go

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

with and be the Rachel Rogers of d e i, or you can be like the Army whose hosts.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Planned for this huge launch of this big platform, but it is not

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

equipped for the own influx of people that visit it every day.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Which one do you want to do?

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Choose wisely when you're choosing your hosting.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

If you don't take anything else away from this episode, choose your hosting wisely.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

All right you guys.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That's it for episode eight.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I will see you in episode nine, y'all.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

We are more than halfway there for the season.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

This season has 12 episodes.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

We are really close three quarters of the way there.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I will see you guys in episode nine and enjoy the rest of your day.
