Length: 10 minutes | Released: June 30, 2026
Most high achievers are experts at overriding themselves.
Skipping breaks. Working through exhaustion. Running on adrenaline and framing it as commitment and discipline.
Nonie explains why ignoring your needs doesn't just impact wellbeing, it directly impacts your decision-making, confidence and capacity to lead strategically..
She breaks down the connection between energy, mood, cognitive performance and sustainable success, introducing the PERMA-V wellbeing framework and explaining why positive emotions are not "nice to have." They are foundational to creativity, focus and leadership.
Through the story of a founder named Carly, Nonie shows what actually changes when someone stops treating their needs like inconveniences and starts designing a way of working that supports them properly.
This is about building the infrastructure that allows you to think clearly, lead well and stop white-knuckling through your life.
Because eventually, depletion catches up with everyone.

How Ignoring Your Needs Caps Your Leadership And Your Life
Radical Recentring with Nonie White
This is Radical Recentring with me, Nonie White. The show for ambitious women who are done pushing, proving and performing, and who are ready to build something unshakeable from who they are at their authentic best. If you're at an inflection point, ready for your next level of success, personal power and impact, and you want to do it differently, you're in the right place. Let's go.
Episode 3, how ignoring your needs caps your leadership and your life.
When was the last time you truly honoured what you needed? Not what your business needed, not what everyone else needed, what you needed. Have you even had space to think about what that might be? Or permitted yourself time and space to think at all? For most high achievers, that question is deeply uncomfortable because ignoring your needs has become so normal you don't even notice you're doing it. But here's what I've learned. Nobody builds deep, unshakeable performance, confidence or authority from a place of depletion.
How we learn to ignore our needs. Most high achievers have got very good at ignoring their needs. It's so ingrained, it's just how they operate. On a micro level, how often do you ignore the fact that you need a wee to just finish this one thing? And we all know it's never just one thing. On a macro level, how often do you try to work through illness, exhaustion, and forge ahead, ignoring your feelings or even signs from your body that you need to take a break or even make a change? I know this from firsthand experience as well from all of my clients. It works until it doesn't, and there's always a cost.
The cap that forms. The thing is, we might want to work ourselves like machines, but we're actually human and we have needs for a reason. And when you consistently ignore your needs, best case scenario, you create challenges for yourself. Worst case, your body makes you stop. Your body has a limit that you keep on hitting. But what most people don't fully understand is that low energy directly leads to low mood, which means your patience runs thin. You become short, snappy, defensive. Your relationships at work and at home are impacted. Your focus, attention and your thinking capacity narrows. You operate from a place of fear in survival mode, not from hope in a lovely big picture strategic mode. You find yourself reacting rather than responding. You make decisions from depletion, not clarity. You're trying to outperform exhaustion and white knuckle success. You think about working harder and working more and hustling harder and being grittier, but you're working yourself into the ground from a place of diminishing returns.
And so the quality of your output drops. You push harder in your business and growth slows. You've had more strategies, but clarity decreases.
Your wellbeing and your nervous system are not optional. They're the bedrock of your personal power and your authority. And that's why Stage 1 of the Unshakeable Method looks at our wellbeing and our energy foundations first. We can only step into that next version of ourselves sustainably if we've got solid foundations in place to build from.
What honouring your needs actually looks like. This isn't about bubble baths and yoga classes, although both of those are lovely. It's about understanding what you actually require to operate at your best. In positive psychology, the science of flourishing, wellbeing is a much broader concept than wellness or self-care. I work with a comprehensive wellbeing theory from positive psychology that has the acronym PERMA-V. This theory argues that we all need these six key ingredients represented by one of those letters in order to have good wellbeing. But we all need different amounts of them because we're all different. The P stands for positive emotions. The E for engagement. R for positive relationships. M for meaning and purpose. A for accomplishment or achievement. And V for vitality, which includes everything from sleep, nutrition, hydration, movement, mindfulness, recovery, boundaries, space to think. All of those things that make you vital, have vitality.
It's all about understanding what you need to be your best in life and work, and then building your work around what you need, not forcing yourself to fit into a way of working that actually denies your needs and depletes you.
Whilst all elements of PERMA-V are important, they all lead back to a certain degree to positive emotions, the P of PERMA-V. Because positive emotions are the bedrock of flourishing as a human. They seed positive cognitions, positive relationships, and positive character. They make us feel good, and in so doing, they expand our attention, our focus, and our cognitive capacity. So not only do they make us feel good, they make us do better too. And when we experience positive emotions, we think more creatively, flexibly, innovatively, and we're able to see more opportunities. So it's really in our interest to build the self-awareness to understand what we need and then to honour those needs, so we both feel good and do our best work.
I had a client, let's call her Carly, and she came to me swimming in treacle. She couldn't see the wood for the trees. She was growing her business but feeling really stuck in the weeds every single day. She thought she just needed more willpower, more discipline. Maybe a spa day, twice a year to reset herself. That was her idea of wellbeing and recovery. But when we dug into what was actually going on, we discovered something different. She had this daily crisp habit she hated. She kept on eating crisps and she really wished she wouldn't. She thought it was about willpower, but it wasn't actually about willpower. It was a signifier of lack of headspace. When she felt up against it and she had no space to think, she felt super stressed and pressured, and she made reactive decisions, including what she ate. She ate the crisps to give her some sort of energy to get through every moment that felt incredibly hard.
And when she created headspace, she made intentional decisions and everything shifted. So we got brutally clear on what she needed to function at her best. She hired a cleaner. She got someone to walk the dog. She stopped drinking alcohol in the week. She spent time in nature. She started meditating for 10 minutes every day with a nap. She created boundaries around her working hours and she delegated more. She built what we call her best possible week, including renting office space and getting out of the house so she would see other people, be less lonely, and get energy from those connections.
None of this was self-indulgent, it was strategic. She wasn't adding more luxuries, she was removing the friction that was depleting her every single day and impacting not only how she felt, but how she performed in her work and the results that she got.
Four months later, her partner noticed she'd changed. He said she was calmer, more positive and making better decisions. He didn't actually know that she'd been having coaching. He just knew that something was different.
And that's what honouring your needs actually looks like. It's not about bubble baths, although I love a bubble bath. It's about creating space to understand, own and honour your needs, building a way of living and working that actually supports them.
Getting clear on what you actually need and building your work around it rather than depleting yourself to fit into a system that doesn't work for you is one of the first things we work on inside the Unshakeable Method, my four month one-to-one coaching programme. If this is resonating with you, the link to find out about how you can work with me is in the show notes.
The reframe. Honouring your needs isn't selfish, it's strategic. It's the foundation everything else is built on. When your needs are met, you have capacity. When you have capacity, you can perform at your best.
So Carly couldn't think clearly because she was in the weeds every day, not because she wasn't intelligent or she didn't have the skills or the talents, because she had zero headspace and no capacity. When she built the infrastructure to meet her needs, her capacity returned. And with it, her ability to perform highly and have that lovely bigger picture perspective that she needed. Once she was honouring her needs, she was no longer lost in the business. She was able to get out of the dance floor and survey it from the balcony to look down and work on her business as well.
Let's remember that when we have our needs met, we feel better too. Not only do we feel better, but we have more energy, our mood increases, we perform better, have better relationships and better results. And it's absolutely wild that our default setting is to ignore this, because it's evidence-based fact and it's something that you'll no doubt recognise to be true for you as well.
So here's my question for you. What needs have you been ignoring? And what would change for you if you honoured them?
In the next episode, we're going to look at something that keeps most leaders stuck without them even realising it. Conditioning.
