Speaker:

and they kind of lost their way. Do I

Speaker:

reckon they, they started panicking a

Speaker:

little bit and, and,

Speaker:

and trying to blast him out or just lost

Speaker:

concentration, which which can easily

Speaker:

happen when you're under an onslaught

Speaker:

like that. And it probably really needed

Speaker:

someone just to, to pull them aside and

Speaker:

just slow the game down and, and

Speaker:

change things up a bit.

Speaker:

I'm Ian Hawkins and this is Sporty's

Speaker:

life. The purpose of sport, as I

Speaker:

see it, is to see your vision become a

Speaker:

reality, find your voice, create

Speaker:

strong connections and learn to trust

Speaker:

your body.

Speaker:

Well, how good was that? the Hurricanes

Speaker:

absolutely demolished the Thunder. I'm

Speaker:

going to be honest, when the Thunder were

Speaker:

batting and none for 100, sayingit's

Speaker:

going quite well. It was a flat pitch,

Speaker:

mind you, but it's like, oh, wow. Like

Speaker:

they're a big chance here. But

Speaker:

then wow, like what a fight back.

Speaker:

Nathan Ellis with the bowling pegged him

Speaker:

back, took crucial wickets and then.

Speaker:

Mitch Owen. Like what a display.

Speaker:

Fitting. Unbelievable. Now I've got to be

Speaker:

honest. Sixes fan. I was

Speaker:

out Monday night, got home, the game was

Speaker:

halfway through. Hadn't given it a great

Speaker:

deal of thought, but I started getting

Speaker:

messages and my son was the same he liked

Speaker:

he hadn't really thought about it either.

Speaker:

He get a message. This is ridiculous

Speaker:

what's going on. And so

Speaker:

he put it on and carnage by the time

Speaker:

we like was only 2 1/2 hours in and he

Speaker:

was already must have been nearly 50. I

Speaker:

can't remember the details, but I told

Speaker:

him we had a quick look back. Look TuneIn

Speaker:

again, he's up to 70. And

Speaker:

just smashing it. And I love the back

Speaker:

story, the.

Speaker:

The young felt the photo of the young

Speaker:

fella him Mitch Owen, as a young

Speaker:

fella in the crowd 10 years earlier.

Speaker:

Just like we all were as kids.

Speaker:

Loving the atmosphere, loving the moment,

Speaker:

maybe dreams of one day being out

Speaker:

there doing that sort of thing

Speaker:

themselves, yourself. And then he

Speaker:

got to do that and what it means. It's a

Speaker:

sort of moment back in my Fox Sports

Speaker:

days where we would have looked up the

Speaker:

number of viewers and there would have

Speaker:

been a clear spike as his innings got

Speaker:

underway, as people did exactly what our

Speaker:

mates did, just started texting, passing

Speaker:

messages onto people and are you watching?

Speaker:

Yes or if you're not watching this,

Speaker:

you've got to be watching this because it

Speaker:

was an unbelievable display. It made me

Speaker:

start thinking what is actually

Speaker:

possible because

Speaker:

think of the one day game, how it's

Speaker:

evolved. We thought you know getting off

Speaker:

to anything over 5 and over was pretty

Speaker:

good in the 1st 15 overs. Actually there

Speaker:

was a time where not losing any wickets

Speaker:

and and four and over in the 1st 15 overs

Speaker:

was pretty good and then. That

Speaker:

improved over time, but then

Speaker:

the introduction of 2020 is what? An

Speaker:

exponential increase in the speed at

Speaker:

which?These

Speaker:

batters are able to increase the run

Speaker:

rate. Incredible that it's

Speaker:

halfway through the 3rd, the 4th over and

Speaker:

east on 6th of the scores on 60 already.

Speaker:

Like I can't remember the exact figure

Speaker:

once the end of the power play, but.

Speaker:

Crazy. So yeah, what's possible and and I

Speaker:

would have loved to have seen what the

Speaker:

the data was, but there definitely would

Speaker:

have been a spike. People would have been

Speaker:

tuning in all over the place as word got

Speaker:

around. He also said, like I said,

Speaker:

back story.

Speaker:

Apparently. He's been going right for a

Speaker:

couple of years and there's, there's

Speaker:

opportunities for him to go to other

Speaker:

franchises. But Ricky Ponting, who's

Speaker:

obviously a Tasmanian legend, was part of

Speaker:

the team putting the, the Hurricanes team

Speaker:

together and, yeah, sold the

Speaker:

vision of, of being the importance of

Speaker:

being the Tasmanian that stays with

Speaker:

that team and, and the impact and like,

Speaker:

what an impact. He was

Speaker:

clearly already confident. He

Speaker:

got a fair few runs in the tournament.

Speaker:

But just how it unfolded, they got a bit

Speaker:

lucky. The first couple of balls had the

Speaker:

the wide down the leg side. Maybe that

Speaker:

took a bit of pressure off. But then he

Speaker:

gets one away and then

Speaker:

suddenly it's like, I don't know where to

Speaker:

bowl him. And it was really interesting

Speaker:

to watch how the commentators kept

Speaker:

saying, though they're not, they're not.

Speaker:

There's no off pace bowling here. They

Speaker:

bought on the spinner. But they, like I

Speaker:

said, there's no point bringing the

Speaker:

spinner on if he's just going to bowl

Speaker:

quick. You need to mix it up and and they

Speaker:

kind of lost their way. Do I reckon they,

Speaker:

they started panicking a little bit and,

Speaker:

and, and trying to

Speaker:

blast him out or just lost concentration,

Speaker:

which which can easily happen when you're

Speaker:

under an onslaught like that. And it

Speaker:

probably really needed someone just to,

Speaker:

to pull them aside and just slow the game

Speaker:

down and, and change things up a bit.

Speaker:

It's been 40° here. I've just noticed the

Speaker:

cold changes just here so I might be

Speaker:

quick in case in case let's start

Speaker:

getting hail on this roof.

Speaker:

But yeah, the the the crowd going crazy

Speaker:

like them chanting Mitch Owens name like

Speaker:

it was a basketball crowd.

Speaker:

Just, yeah, haven't seen that sort of

Speaker:

my home team going that crazy might be

Speaker:

standard fair in the the IPL because they

Speaker:

they're pretty keen on it being an

Speaker:

Australian crowd. That's that's not

Speaker:

something I've seen the likes of. So that

Speaker:

really crab that community, that

Speaker:

connection. And and I

Speaker:

reckon like if talking about performance,

Speaker:

clearly there was a a good fight back

Speaker:

from the Hurricanes in their bowl innings

Speaker:

and, and Nathan Ellis in particular that

Speaker:

taking crucial wickets and slowing down

Speaker:

the rate of scoring. But sometimes

Speaker:

it's just a freakish moment

Speaker:

from an individual like there was from

Speaker:

Owen where just everything came off.

Speaker:

It wasn't necessarily any more in the

Speaker:

middle, but he was finding the gaps. He

Speaker:

was here 11 over the boundary, so it

Speaker:

wouldn't matter where the gap gaps were

Speaker:

for that one, but just in the zone.

Speaker:

So he was confident because he got runs

Speaker:

before he had clearly had a simple plan.

Speaker:

He he wasn't playing any of the ramp

Speaker:

shots. He wasn't playing or

Speaker:

limited. Inventive

Speaker:

shots He was a lot of good cricket

Speaker:

shots. Some of them were

Speaker:

slogs and heaves, but they were He kept

Speaker:

his still head. He was pretty relatively.

Speaker:

Relatively normal stance

Speaker:

and just goes to show that there's

Speaker:

there's many ways to play the game even

Speaker:

in this new age where they've they've

Speaker:

invented new shots and created all sorts

Speaker:

of different scoring avenues.

Speaker:

Yeah, I'd love to hear people's thoughts.

Speaker:

Where were they? Were they watching? Did

Speaker:

they get the message? Did they see

Speaker:

something on social media and then jumped

Speaker:

on and had a look? What did you think of

Speaker:

it? Was there anything the Thunder could

Speaker:

have done? I know some of my mates would

Speaker:

be looking there going. Yeah, they

Speaker:

definitely could have mixed things up

Speaker:

and. I think the Thunder lost their way a

Speaker:

bit. But if we just

Speaker:

look at it for what it was, just an

Speaker:

incredible moment, the sort of thing that

Speaker:

only sport can do, just create those

Speaker:

moments where.

Speaker:

Yeah, huge, high

Speaker:

performance and you can't help but just

Speaker:

look back and admire it and and be

Speaker:

excited by it. The only people that

Speaker:

probably aren't excited by it are the

Speaker:

Thunder fans, but even some of those guys

Speaker:

would have to be grudgingly

Speaker:

acknowledge just what a incredible

Speaker:

display it was.

Speaker:

Yeah, the power of sport A I'll

Speaker:

leave it there for today. Let me know

Speaker:

your thoughts if if you have any feedback

Speaker:

in the. Anything

Speaker:

that you liked about the game, any

Speaker:

ideas you might have about how things

Speaker:

could have gone differently and and just

Speaker:

in general about what a display it was,

Speaker:

speak to the next one.

Speaker:

You've taken the time to listen to this

Speaker:

whole episode. Now it's time to take

Speaker:

action. Commit to one thing you've

Speaker:

learned today and make it happen. And to
