Speaker:I want to talk to you about what I call the voice of retardation and homeostasis.
Speaker:Retardation is a word we don't tend to use very often these days, but for
Speaker:something to be retarded, it means to be held back in its development that its
Speaker:normal growth curve has been held back.
Speaker:And homeostasis of course, refers to the.
Speaker:Ancient Greek principle.
Speaker:Homeostasis.
Speaker:It means that the kind of process by which something is held in its exact
Speaker:place in the human body homeostasis homeostasis refers to kind of the
Speaker:fact that in general, left to itself, our body tries to hold a regular
Speaker:heartbeat, regular blood pressure.
Speaker:You know, can you imagine if our heart rate kind of screamed around
Speaker:and jumped different sort of you.
Speaker:50 points here.
Speaker:30 points there.
Speaker:So this is kind of process by which our body is always
Speaker:trying to keep things the same.
Speaker:So I want to put these two things together.
Speaker:This force that holds us back this retarding force and this force
Speaker:that tries to keep us the same.
Speaker:It seems to be a very.
Speaker:Common human experience that growth and radical change do not seem to come
Speaker:very simply and easily in our lives.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:I'm becoming aware that if you listen carefully to your inner dialogue,
Speaker:depending on your individual personality, I am very clear that all of us
Speaker:have different personal psychology.
Speaker:Some of us are optimists.
Speaker:Some of us are realists, but in general, we'll have different psychology.
Speaker:But if you start to really listen to this inner dialogue,
Speaker:You can often hear something.
Speaker:That's either doing a, trying to hold you back.
Speaker:Retarding your development.
Speaker:Or something that's trying to keep you exactly where you are.
Speaker:So, what I've begun to learn is that growth and development in our lives
Speaker:comes from getting really good.
Speaker:At recognizing that inner voice.
Speaker:How many times have I said this to you guys that I spent most of my life thinking
Speaker:that that inner voice was on our side.
Speaker:It is not.
Speaker:On our side, a lot of the time.
Speaker:Our brains evolved to do one thing and one thing only, and
Speaker:that's to keep us alive and happy.
Speaker:It's about 5:00 AM here.
Speaker:I'm going to get out of the studio in a minute and I'm going to go and
Speaker:run for probably about two hours.
Speaker:Can I tell you the truth?
Speaker:The truth is that.
Speaker:Sometimes I really don't enjoy it.
Speaker:It's dark it rain the holy yesterday.
Speaker:I think it's due to rain this morning.
Speaker:It's dark.
Speaker:It's probably raining.
Speaker:And you know, I did a run the other day, where two days
Speaker:before I'd run a half marathon.
Speaker:So I went out to do more.
Speaker:I went out to half marathons, 21 K.
Speaker:I did that on a Tuesday.
Speaker:It was a Thursday and I ran out to do, um, I wanted to do 35 K, which I did.
Speaker:But can I tell you something?
Speaker:I walked out my front door.
Speaker:I got past my letter box.
Speaker:I took literally the first step.
Speaker:And I was in pain.
Speaker:Uh, pain on both sides of my body running up through both legs.
Speaker:Uh, through my pelvis, into my lower back and what it was was inflammation.
Speaker:It was sort of inflammation from the previous day.
Speaker:So the very first step that I took was painful.
Speaker:The very last step that I took was painful.
Speaker:And I know some of you are listening, going, Jonathan, this is abuse.
Speaker:This is terrible.
Speaker:Why do you do this to yourself?
Speaker:Buddy's trying to send you a message.
Speaker:Yeah, your body's always trying to send you message.
Speaker:Most of the time, the message that it's trying to send is
Speaker:get a bag of potato chips.
Speaker:I'm going watch Netflix.
Speaker:That's the message that our body and mind likes to send us most of the time.
Speaker:Why.
Speaker:Because it's into self-preservation it's into homeostasis at best.
Speaker:And it's into retardation at worst.
Speaker:The retarding force is more interesting.
Speaker:I personally think it's more diabolical.
Speaker:I think.
Speaker:I know I've got a diverse.
Speaker:Listenership here, but I think you'll all know what I mean when I say.
Speaker:That there are two forces existing in the universe.
Speaker:One that wants to see us grow, develop, and serve, and one
Speaker:that wants to send us backwards.
Speaker:And that voice plays out in our inner psyche.
Speaker:It plays out in our whole life journey.
Speaker:So today I want you to start listening for other, the voice of retardation.
Speaker:Or the voice of homeostasis.
Speaker:Those two forces are powerful, powerful forces that shape our
Speaker:destiny and really to change them.
Speaker:What you have to simply do is get really good at noticing them in the moment.
Speaker:So I woke up this morning around four ish.
Speaker:Came into the studio and, uh, yeah, as I said, everything's
Speaker:kind of like, ah, how good would it be just to go and cook bacon.
Speaker:Just bacon.
Speaker:It's to go and cook some bacon.
Speaker:And just, just lie down and read a book.
Speaker:But it's not going to happen.
Speaker:'cause I got one life and, uh, there's a lot of good stuff to do
Speaker:and they want to keep on top of these things and keep growing and
Speaker:developing so I can live fully.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:My friends, that's it for me today.
Speaker:Get good at listening to that voice, do the opposite of
Speaker:what it says most of the time.
Speaker:And of course, there's always times for rest recovery.
Speaker:There's times where you need a break.
Speaker:Totally do that.
Speaker:I do that myself.
Speaker:Recovery is a huge part of growth.
Speaker:But that's not what I'm getting at today.
Speaker:You know what I'm getting at?
Speaker:I'm getting at that other force that wants to hold you back and
Speaker:stop you growing and developing.
Speaker:All right.
