“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
Jesus. Luke 23:34. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 28 of 30 Days in the Gospels. Forgive them—they don’t know what they’re doing. In the midst of the crushing agony and searing pain, he never forgot us. Never lost sight of his purpose. Never became consumed with his own survival. Never gave a moment to bitterness. His heart-cry to the very end, was forgive them. In this act, Jesus reveals to every person the attitude of God—never yelling out angry epithets, but forgiving. We may respond however we wish, but it will never change his heart toward us. He will always embrace us—friend or enemy—with his forgiving heart. We may ultimately reject him, yet even then, forgiveness and mercy will define his attitude toward us. As the lost rebels finally sink into ashes, his breaking heart will cry, “I loved you to the very end, while you refuse to be with me, I will never forget you, my child.”
