Shownotes

In this episode of Tapped In, David Figaro Martinez dives deep into the "Invisible Season"—that quiet, often discouraging phase of your BJJ journey where the vibrant colors of early progress fade into mundane, unrecognised work. Whether you are a white belt struggling with consistency or a purple belt feeling the weight of the grind, David explores how to quantify the "unquantifiable" wins, like better defensive frames and more specific technical questions. We discuss why the "warehouse" of your game is the most vital part of your success and why you should trust the compliments of your upper belts even when your inner critic is loud.

3 Key Takeaways

  • Quantify the Unquantifiable: Progress isn't always a submission; sometimes it's making a training partner work twice as hard to pass your guard or improving your defensive timing.
  • The Power of Specificity: You know you're evolving when your questions shift from "How do I get out of side control?" to specific technical inquiries about pressure and body mechanics.
  • The Warehouse Effect: The most important work happens behind "double doors" where no one is watching. This invisible labor is the lifeblood of your long-term game.

00:00 Welcome to Tapped In, my name is David Figaro Martinez, and today we're going to be discussing that really quiet invisible season that you're going to have.

01:00 Sometimes that season can kind of dissuade us from continuing to work towards something because it doesn't feel recognized... it doesn't feel like it even matters.

02:30 I've watched students who can get lost in that and feel like progression isn't what they want... they're framing things in more a comparative aspect.

04:00 Maybe your base is getting a little better. You're harder to get passes on.

06:00 Another thing that will sometimes be noticed by me or people who are more experienced... is that you're asking better questions.

08:00 When a student goes from "How do I get out from side control?" to "Johnny puts me in this specific type... and I can't seem to negate the pressure," we can really get in-depth.

10:00 I equate it to... I have worked in warehouses for the majority of my adult life. Companies don't really respect the warehouse.

12:00 But you can't negate how important that group is because they make the product move. They are the lifeblood of the entire company.

14:30 You're working on the things that you need to be working on, but the trap is that you don't think you're improving.

17:00 Once you get to a certain stage, things start to click... you start recognizing patterns.

19:00 Start measuring how long you're surviving in bad positions.

21:00 When we give you compliments... we're not lying. I'm genuinely noticing a difference. You don't notice it.

22:30 Until next time, thank you so much.
