Ryan Hamilton:

Before we begin, Simran and I want to acknowledge that we're recording this on the land of the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people of the Kulin Nations. We also want to acknowledge that the two of us met and grew up together on the land of the Yugambeh people, and we want to acknowledge and pay our respects to Yugambeh and Kulin elders past and present,

Ryan:

and we extend that respect to any First Nations listeners.

Simran Pasricha:

Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

Ryan:

Welcome back to Broadly Relevant! I'm Ryan Hamilton.

Simran:

I'm Simran Pasricha, and this is a podcast for burnt-out girlies trying to stay broadly relevant.

Ryan:

So, how are you going, Simran?

Simran:

I'm going so well and let's just be real, all right?

Ryan:

Rip the bandaid off.

Simran:

Look we recorded this podcast and that's okay because from trauma comes growth.

Ryan:

I did not hit record.

Ryan:

And you know what else it is, Simran?

Simran:

That it is, my month baby.

Ryan:

It's Endometriosis Awareness Month.

Ryan:

That it is.

Ryan:

My month, baby, my month.

Ryan:

Endometriosis Awareness Month, baby, my month.

Simran:

It's so weird like the random reports and research that goes into endometriosis like Let's rate our attractiveness of people with endometriosis.

Ryan:

>> And the findings were- >>

Simran:

I'm hot. I'm not putting that in the show notes. You don't need to look at that.

Simran:

You know that.

Ryan:

>> [LAUGH] >> Broadly news.

Simran:

Broadly news.

FX:

[dramatic music]

FX:

[dramatic music]

Ryan:

Okay, so have you heard of the labor government?

Simran:

Yeah, this niche old party.

Ryan:

>> So they're trying to put through a bill, an anti-doxing bill.

Ryan:

Do you know what doxing is?

Simran:

That I do, that I do. I too have been lightly doxxed.

Ryan:

[laughing]

Ryan:

- How was it?

Simran:

Uh, you know.

Simran:

So, it was fun at first, loved the attention, again, but I didn't love the attention shifting to my mom.

Ryan:

So it all came out of a news story from a couple of weeks ago where essentially there was this WhatsApp or Telegram group chat of a bunch of influential media Zionists who had this group chat where they were basically organizing how to influence the media and public perception of the conflict in Gaza to be more pro-Israel and less pro-Palestine.

Simran:

And I said, "What about me?"

Simran:

So, no, didn't love that lightly doxing moment.

Simran:

But tell me more about this bill.

Ryan:

And so basically, activists for Palestine got into the group chat and just leaked the chat records and the usernames of who said what.

Ryan:

All the Zionists cried foul and said, "Stop doxing us!"

Ryan:

And I'm like, that's not even what doxing is.

Ryan:

You guys just sent some really naughty things in a group chat.

Ryan:

That's not doxing.

Simran:

Google it, because we are not a fact-checking podcast, so that's too much work for us.

Ryan:

But it is basically gathering personal information about someone online and then releasing it

Ryan:

Stuff like address, name, date of birth, phone number and contact details just to put them in a little bit of danger.

Simran:

No, and it's not good.

Simran:

I forgot about doxing, I think I trauma blocked that out.

Simran:

And I have yoga classes that I run near my house, right?

Simran:

And it's a lot of older people, so they don't have, you know, they're not so savvy with social media.

Simran:

So I put my phone number on the flyer, and my brother was like, "What are you doing,

Simran:

Simran?

Simran:

That is not okay."

Simran:

And it simply wasn't okay, because...

Ryan:

[laughter]

Simran:

And yoga is famously sexualized, and...

Ryan:

Did you get doxxed again?

Simran:

Ugh, I did it again!

Ryan:

[laughter]

Ryan:

Not to victim-blame or anything!

Simran:

Shit's happening!

Ryan:

What's happening? Hey!

Simran:

Shit!

Simran:

But yeah, no, I got doxed again.

Ryan:

Um, but yeah, no, I got doxxed again.

Ryan:

But moving on, quickly.

Simran:

Totally.

Simran:

Yeah, yeah, quickly!

Simran:

Quickly!

Ryan:

I've got some good news for you.

Simran:

Yeah.

Simran:

You know, tell me.

Ryan:

Have you heard of dogs?

Ryan:

So, um, basically, there's some, like, dog show, you know,

Ryan:

when they, like, run around and prance and look really cute and shit?

Simran:

Yeah.

Ryan:

Guess who just won the 2024 Crufts Dog Competition?

Simran:

Tell me who!

Ryan:

Tell me who!

Ryan:

An Australian shepherd named Viking.

Simran:

Shut up!

Ryan:

Shut up!

Ryan:

I'm just now realizing that I've only read the headline,

Ryan:

and I've interpreted "Australian Shepherd"

Ryan:

to mean that it's an Australian dog.

Simran:

Again, not a fact-checking podcast. He might be Australian. He might not be Australian.

Ryan:

I really can't tell.

Simran:

But he does look regal as heck in his little profile photo. He has a polka dotted background,

Ryan:

But he does look like a dog.

Simran:

which means that he's aware of the trend. Polka dots coming back in 2024. And I align with any

Simran:

trend seaker dog, you know? Yeah. Bye. Yeah. Very good. Very good. Okay, should we move on?

Ryan:

No, so true, and also, what a name, Viking.

Ryan:

Yeah, Vi?

Ryan:

Viking!

Ryan:

Yeah!

Ryan:

Very good, very good.

Ryan:

Good news!

Ryan:

Yeah, I think that's the week in news.

Simran:

Love that. Broadly culture. That was really lovely.

Ryan:

Broadly cultured!

Ryan:

Ooh, I do love a harmony.

Ryan:

Massive cultural week in the zeitgeist.

Simran:

Yeah. Okay. Oh, in the zeitgeist. Zeitgeist alert. Yes.

Ryan:

Let's start with Kate Middleton.

Ryan:

Holy fuck.

Ryan:

[laughter]

Simran:

Strong open. Yeah. Yeah, I actually have seen the picture.

Ryan:

Like, have you seen the picture?

Ryan:

Yeah, I actually-

Ryan:

What an insane fucking picture!

Ryan:

So, if you haven't seen it, essentially there was a photo released by the Associated Press, um, which the palace had supplied to them.

Ryan:

A photo of Kate, who hasn't been seen in public since, uh, mid-January I think? Um, and it was her with, you know, the assorted children. But there were a couple weird inconsistencies about it. Some of the children's fingers looked really weird, and like, weird blurring artifacts like on some of the clothing

Ryan:

and the background green leaves and it's like winter in the UK so people are like I don't even think they took that photo then

Simran:

what i'm hearing is is that the leaves are supposed to be brown and that's brown erasure right there

Ryan:

exactly and I cannot believe the palace would do this again you know i'm flummoxed right because everyone was going insane about these edits being like oh my god what are they covering up and you know what the palace came out and said no no it's fine kate just occasionally likes to edit photos for

Simran:

yeah yeah get it together baby

Simran:

What?

Simran:

No, no.

Simran:

Fine.

Simran:

I hate them.

Simran:

I'm gonna take a photo of myself before releasing them.

Ryan:

herself before releasing them.

Simran:

Girl's about to get a FaceTune sponsorship.

Simran:

I'm like, no.

Ryan:

And I'm like, no, that's simply not the case.

Ryan:

Because if you look at the metadata, it was taken on like a Canon.

Ryan:

But is she using a Canon?

Ryan:

I don't know.

Ryan:

I don't think she learned photography.

Ryan:

I think she learned how to woo Prince William.

Simran:

Okay, come for her throat!

Ryan:

But right.

Ryan:

And then in the metadata, you know, what was edited with?

Simran:

What?

Simran:

Okay, here's the thing.

Ryan:

Photoshop.

Ryan:

Okay.

Ryan:

- All right, I think we've done it.

Simran:

I do believe that she knows how to use Photoshop and I do believe that she took up photography,

Ryan:

[both laughing]

Simran:

absolutely.

Simran:

What else is a royal person doing?

Simran:

She's cutting ribbons and she's taking up photography like every other white person.

Simran:

Yeah, look!

Ryan:

You raise a good point, but still there's something weird about it.

Simran:

[laughing]

Ryan:

Cause I love them like buckling down.

Ryan:

I am loving the misinformation going around.

Simran:

no totally and just like let the girl have a bbl you know

Ryan:

I saw a really great thread on threads by Taylor Lorenz, who's stunning journalist.

Ryan:

We love her.

Ryan:

And she was talking about how the palace is in this really like uncomfortable

Ryan:

position because unfortunately the internet loves misinformation.

Ryan:

Like we know that Kate Middleton.

Ryan:

But I choose to believe that she has a massive badonkadonk right now.

Simran:

no totally and I do see that for her actually oh my goodness so I actually have this theory that basically this is all purposeful and that this is all part of a bigger pr plan from the royal family to memeify themselves because they know that memes are the only way to stay relevant that is giving a lot of credit to the PR team at the royal family I don't know if they're that smart on that uh but maybe they actually just need Tree Paine - it's reparations

Ryan:

Just the largest.

Ryan:

Because you know, Prince William, accused of cheating, she's gotta pull him back somehow.

Ryan:

I just want to acknowledge that that was my joke from the last time I recorded this and Simran has stolen it point-blank.

Ryan:

No, but TreePain would do great for the royal family, like imagine like if we got like little glues and like what Kate was wearing.

Ryan:

It's a time for Easter eggs.

Simran:

Well, Easter is coming up, so the time for Easter eggs are now.

Simran:

It's time?

Simran:

Yeah.

Ryan:

TreePain, work with Kate, please.

Simran:

Thank you.

Simran:

Absolutely.

Simran:

Please.

Simran:

Anything.

Simran:

Should we talk about another PopGirly?

Ryan:

Let's talk about another pop girlie.

Simran:

A.K.A.

Simran:

Miss Ariana Grande.

Simran:

Oh, look at that.

Simran:

Oh, and back she is in a big way.

Simran:

She's literally everywhere.

Simran:

She was at the Oscars.

Simran:

The new Wicked trailer came out.

Simran:

She was on SNL.

Simran:

Most notably, I want to point out that she's back to being white.

Ryan:

Welcome back to the club.

Simran:

What?

Simran:

It's so exciting.

Simran:

No, it really is.

Simran:

But people are calling her out for looking like sickly and unwell.

Simran:

And I'm like, "Babes, please don't right now because she's going to turn on us again."

Ryan:

[laughter]

Simran:

Okay.

Ryan:

She's very fragile.

Simran:

Yes.

Simran:

And she's gone through a lot of different ethnicities, but she hasn't been South Asian yet.

Simran:

And I feel like if you push her over the edge, she's going to come for us.

Ryan:

She's gonna come for us, okay?

Simran:

Okay.

Ryan:

So don't be scared.

Simran:

I'm really scared.

Simran:

This is what white people look like.

Ryan:

It's not white people.

Ryan:

We do.

Ryan:

I've always looked like Ariana Grande.

Simran:

It's like, "Wow, I'm with Ariana right now in the studio."

Ryan:

And I'm with Kate Middleton.

Simran:

[cough]

Simran:

[laughs]

Simran:

Yeah, tell me what you feel about the Wicked trailer.

Ryan:

It was just so deeply unsaturated.

Simran:

Mmm...

Ryan:

Like, such a washed out, like, colour.

Simran:

Well, that seems to be her theme.

Simran:

[laughs]

Ryan:

No, true.

Ryan:

But also, like, I am excited for that movie.

Ryan:

Like, I'm really excited.

Simran:

No, same. And I will be watching it.

Ryan:

I actually have one last thing to say, and it's like a bit of good news for us.

Ryan:

Tasmanian Premier vows to build largest chocolate fountain if re-elected.

Ryan:

How do we feel about that?

Simran:

Oh, I love that. Glasgow Wonka could never...

Ryan:

No, but okay, so he's the Liberal Premier, which we don't love.

Ryan:

But we do love chocolate fountains.

Ryan:

We do love that he would commit $12 million to the chocolate experience.

Ryan:

And he says it'd be the greatest thing to happen to tourism in Tasmania since Mona.

Ryan:

Which is a big claim.

Simran:

And I agree with that, to be honest. That's insane. A chocolate- the largest chocolate fountain is crazy.

Ryan:

And I agree with that quote to be honest.

Ryan:

That's insane.

Ryan:

A $12 million chocolate fountain.

Ryan:

Wow.

Simran:

Wow.

Simran:

No, that is kind of stunning and we are looking at the photo right now, but because this is not a video podcast

Ryan:

Kind of stunning.

Simran:

Sucks to suck, I guess, but it's beautiful. It's like cascading. It's got chocolate in it It's a fountain and it's large. If you were a politician, what would your random promise be to get re-elected?

Ryan:

Fuck, I guess.

Ryan:

Rooftop veggie patches?

Simran:

Okay, that's very helpful.

Simran:

I was thinking more like

Simran:

Like a day where everybody gets their like piercings cleaned out or like

Ryan:

No, I'd vote for that. Or like a free piercing.

Simran:

Yeah, right or like a free free piercings day

Ryan:

Yeah.

Simran:

Potentially like a communal like strawberry milk fountain in like a suburb

Ryan:

I'm not on board

Simran:

What the why

Ryan:

Heatwave? A strawby milk fountain?

Simran:

Way to kill a girl's dream

Simran:

Why do you hate women my god

Simran:

Would you say yes if it was banana milk, yeah

Ryan:

You're tempting me, but I I still think it would absolutely reak during summer

Simran:

Look I'm an ideas gal, all right

Ryan:

No, you are maybe also I'd do better bike lanes What?

Simran:

Yeah, I don't know how to ride a bike yeah, I don't know how to ride it can I tell you why

Ryan:

Yeah, I don't know.

Ryan:

Can I tell you why?

Ryan:

Okay.

Simran:

I grew up in Malaysia like for the first 11 years of my life and

Simran:

And my brother was learning how to--

Simran:

how to ride a bike.

Simran:

But then there was someone on our street whose child was kidnapped, and so my mom was like,

Simran:

you can't come out.

Simran:

And then the period of time of when I was going to learn how to ride a bike ended, I guess.

Ryan:

- And then my brother.

Simran:

And then my brother fell into a drain while riding his bike.

Ryan:

[laughter]

Ryan:

- Broadly deep.

Simran:

Broadly deep-- that was very deep, deep.

Ryan:

- So what is the agenda today?

Simran:

The Oscars, baby.

Ryan:

- Justice, baby.

Simran:

>> Well, [BLANK_AUDIO]

Ryan:

- Well, you know, it was so lovely getting invites,

Ryan:

the two of us, as the influences that we are.

Simran:

>> Indeed, but as the humble influencers that we are,

Simran:

we did in fact have to say no to that.

Ryan:

Yeah, it didn't work with the schedules, you know.

Simran:

And my hair washing schedule was off, so I don't think I could have done that.

Ryan:

And like, I'm not sure I'm all up for that.

Ryan:

But yeah, what a wild, absolutely wild night.

Simran:

>> What a wild [INAUDIBLE] >> No, simply wild night.

Ryan:

Highlight for you.

Simran:

Oh, oh, oh my highlight of the night was John Cena.

Ryan:

Oh, a strong highlight.

Simran:

Yeah.

Simran:

Yeah.

Ryan:

I don't even know what he was doing.

Simran:

Just the confidence of it, not even like the aesthetic of it.

Simran:

Like, no, I just appreciate the confidence of that.

Simran:

And that's all I have to say about that.

Simran:

What was your highlight?

Ryan:

uh, Messi the dog. Messi was the dog star of Anatomy of a Fool, um, and they, like, had a pre-recorded segment where he was, like, watching the Oscars, and, like, they had little, like,

Ryan:

fake dog hands clapping for him, and he was, like, applauding Robert Downey Jr. or someone.

Simran:

I love that. That is so cute. Bring more dogs to award shows. Normalize that.

Ryan:

So cute. So cute.

Ryan:

No, well, I saw TikTok, which was, like, we should cut best actor and best actress,

Ryan:

and just call it best performer, and we should also let non-humans compete.

Simran:

Hmm

Simran:

Yeah, no and that's so real and I agree with that 100% let's do that

Ryan:

That's so real, and I agree with that 100%.

Ryan:

Because I would like to see Messi the dog win.

Simran:

Yeah, there was a couple of things that happened at the awards night even before

Ryan:

Well, yeah, no, let's talk about it.

Simran:

Yeah, mr. Mark Ruffalo

Ryan:

He, um, obviously a great guy. Apparently he's been in some movies. I can't tell you which one.

Simran:

Yes, he was in Hulk I think and poor things

Ryan:

Good for him.

Ryan:

Oh, okay, a movie I haven't seen. Um, but he, yes, was...

Simran:

Yeah, yes

Ryan:

he walked into the Oscars, and because there was, like, a protest, a pro-Palestine protest right outside the Oscars, he walked in and straight to the cameras, he was, like, we should end the Oscars,

Simran:

look I don't know if he actually said that he was like kind of muffled I know that he said like yay

Simran:

humanity or something like humanity wins he said I don't know but like it feels like something he would say not a fact-checking podcast but like it feels right you know yes but it was great to see

Ryan:

He said something.

Ryan:

I don't know.

Ryan:

But like, it's still, it's still, it's not a fact, but like, it's still.

Ryan:

Ceasefire and Antheoscope.

Simran:

so many celebrities rock the artist for sis fire pin I mean no he's so hot

Ryan:

Remy Youssef, he was so cute.

Ryan:

But yeah, it was an interesting night for Palestine because, um, there were a couple of people talking about Palestine on stage and a couple of people not talking about Palestine on stage.

Ryan:

And let's talk about the people who were talking about Palestine on stage.

Simran:

-You mean the one person? -Well, there were like a few of them there.

Ryan:

Well, there were like three of them up there at the time.

Ryan:

Um, but this was Jonathan Glazer who directed the Zone of Interest, which

Ryan:

is about Auschwitz.

Ryan:

And Jonathan Glazer, who accepted the Oscar for Best International Film the first time Britain won it, had some words to say about it. And he said, "All our choices are made to reflect and confront us in the present. Not to say, 'Look what they did then,' rather, 'Look what we do now.'

Ryan:

Our film shows us where dehumanization leads us at its worst." Which I think is really interesting because he's explicitly acknowledging that stories about other places aren't about those other places. They're actually about the here and now." But then he goes,

Ryan:

"Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing Holocaust."

Simran:

I love that he mentioned Gaza like by name because so many people didn't you know and I

Simran:

so Oppenheimer was the other big winner of the night they literally won Christopher Nolan won best director, Cillian Murphy won best actor, they won best film, they had ample opportunity to say something about Gaza to say something about the atrocities that are happening right now

Ryan:

The literal bombing supported by the United States government, which I-

Simran:

Exactly, like, is arguably what Oppenheimer is about!

Ryan:

I can tell you what Oppenheim is about!

Ryan:

Not that I watched it.

Ryan:

I was strongly on Barbie, but I'm aware of history.

Simran:

I get that. No, I didn't watch it either. Yes, yes we are! Herstory!

Ryan:

No, and it's so disappointing.

Simran:

No, absolutely, Cillian Murphy did say something about peace in his speech, but it's giving not enough and I feel the same way about the artist for Ceasefire Pins. It's a little bit on the edge,

Simran:

you know, it's a little bit performance-y, not all the way.

Simran:

I think it does have a lot, like, it does say something, absolutely, on such a big stage.

Ryan:

And we do need to, like, normalize people saying something.

Simran:

Yes. Let's say more things.

Ryan:

But ceasefire is the bare minimum.

Simran:

Yes, exactly. And I was reading this article on Z-Feed by Crystal Andrews,

Simran:

who happens to be my boss, about this topic. And in the article, it says,

Simran:

"Killian Murphy won Best Actor for his portrayal of Oppenheimer, which is dedicated to Peacemakers everywhere!

Simran:

The calls for simple peace at this time are a cop-out. Stronger language is needed. As she wrote in her newsletter,

Simran:

"People integrate peace as a lack of bombs and bullets. Peace is a call to end the warring, but does not offer much after that."

Ryan:

That is a hot take and I love it.

Simran:

Yeah, because again, ceasefire is the start and then what, you know? And that's what we're fighting for right now. And correct, ceasefire now.

Ryan:

Yeah, because again, people hire and that's what we're fighting for.

Ryan:

Yeah, land back, land back.

Simran:

Land back. I don't know. I just feel like people can do more, you know?

Ryan:

No, a hundred percent, a hundred percent.

Ryan:

So I guess what you're saying is basically Oppenheimer won big,

Ryan:

but what didn't win big, Simran?

Simran:

Tell me.

Ryan:

Barbie.

Simran:

Barbie, unless...

Ryan:

And let's talk about it because like, first of all, what a travesty those Oscar nominations.

Simran:

Oh

Ryan:

We write the history books of cinema in the 21st century.

Ryan:

The cinema book will go.

Ryan:

No one watched movies until July 21st, 2023 when Greta Gerwig brought the masses back.

Ryan:

No, because it's true.

Ryan:

Like, I don't give a shit about Christopher Nolan.

Ryan:

Like, the only people watching Oppenheimer are people who already watched movies and those people are boring.

Ryan:

The rest of us, we hated movies until Barbie came along.

Simran:

did you only watch three movies last year?

Ryan:

At least me personally.

Ryan:

Like last year, the three movies I watched in cinemas, in cinemas,

Simran:

Barbie.

Ryan:

[wheeze]

Simran:

Here's two.

Simran:

Oh, four.

Ryan:

The Eras Tour

Simran:

Barbie.

Simran:

What a pick!

Simran:

Half of which went with me, that's nice.

Ryan:

Oh, four. Barbie, The Eras Tour, Wonka, and The Hunger Games.

Ryan:

*laughing* What? I thought we were trading seats!

Simran:

Yeah, wait, are we friends?

Ryan:

Yeah! Yeah, we are, right?

Simran:

Look, I love this energy, for sure, with Barbie and Greta, and I do think that they were robbed

Simran:

Where was this energy for other women, especially women of color, who were also robbed in these

Ryan:

No, and that's such a great point and I would give you a nuanced research take but unfortunately, I don't watch films

Simran:

Okay.

Simran:

Do you want to know something else that I'm upset about?

Ryan:

Yeah, tell me

Simran:

Yeah.

Simran:

Influencers at the Oscars.

Ryan:

Okay

Simran:

Not them being at the Oscars, but people being upset that they were at the Oscars.

Ryan:

But like where else am I gonna

Simran:

No, exactly.

Simran:

If Chris Olsen isn't telling me what's going on at the Oscars, I'm not going to know!

Ryan:

No, no, literally and like

Ryan:

That guy who sings the songs that the celebrities and then asks them a thot daughter or gay son. I

Simran:

- I'm obsessed with him.

Ryan:

Need to know like

Simran:

- I know.

Simran:

- Yeah.

Simran:

- Like--

Simran:

- Thot daughter, or gay son!

Ryan:

No, and I do need to know and like America Ferrera's take on that interesting I can't probably recall what she said, but it was something like thank you And then she all walked away uncomfortably and you know what that says a lot

Ryan:

America Ferrera anti thot daughter 2024.

Simran:

I don't think she knows what a thot daughter is but yeah people really don't like that influencers are at the oscars but I was looking through the list of random ass people that were there and there are so many other like c-list d-list celebrities influencers is basically the same thing okay

Ryan:

No I'm like just cut best supporting actor and just put the influencers there.

Simran:

Put Messi and the influencers in, alright?

Ryan:

No but and it's also that thing of like because of the way the world is where like you have to make content for anything it's like I don't think there's much of a line between influencer and like

Simran:

and we all have to remember that being an actor is just lying for a living you're just pretending

Ryan:

- You're just pretending.

Ryan:

- And arguably influences are more authentic.

Ryan:

[laughing]

Simran:

famously

Ryan:

[laughing]

Simran:

but okay I think I have a solution of how people can get around this whole influencer at oscars and award show thing is that there needs to be a why right like I think they could come up and like interview people like look at liza koshy emma chamberlain reese

Ryan:

- Okay, I--

Ryan:

Mm-hmm.

Simran:

emily rube that girl who like pretended to be interviewed at talk shows and like then she's interviewing people I know that girl boss town thinks the same thing on tiktok and wants to be like an interviewer and I think that's a great idea however a bit scary when

Simran:

influencers become journalists like replace journal

Ryan:

And I hear the note, but I think what would weird me out more is if the influences were on the other side of the red carpet.

Ryan:

Like, it's weird when they're on the red carpet.

Ryan:

I'm like, you didn't do anything.

Ryan:

But it makes sense for me when they're like with the media, because they are like,

Ryan:

they already mediate how we see so much of the world.

Simran:

My only concern with that, and I know that I put this forward as such a solution,

Ryan:

[laughing]

Simran:

but I'm taking it back. And it's, I feel like the art of journalism is then kind of lost if you're kind of putting anybody into it. The example that is coming to my head that is like fully concerning me is Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy, because she gets so many great, amazing guests on,

Simran:

like Jane Fonda, Zayn Malik, those are the same thing, and has this opportunity to really have

Simran:

like hard-hitting questions with them, you know, and she does nothing. I don't know,

Simran:

their whole conversation is so stale always, like her interviewing skills maybe just like need a bit of work, and obviously she has like her own unwell media empire going on, and I love that for her. I think just interviewing skills need to be worked on, but maybe that's also the reason why so many celebrities come on to her podcast to get interviewed, because they know that it'll it'll be such an easy in for you, but then where we find.

Simran:

Finding any news, you know, where do we where's where's the storytelling coming from?

Simran:

If the stories aren't saying anything?

Simran:

Yes.

Ryan:

But, you know, then there's like people like chicken shop date and like that hot wing YouTube channel where I'm like, no, but like they are getting into it.

Simran:

Yeah.

Simran:

Yes, yes.

Ryan:

And like, it is exciting to see.

Ryan:

And also I feel like there's always been like that sort of like softball

Ryan:

interview energy with some celebrities.

Ryan:

And, you know, celebrities will always pick and choose who they want.

Ryan:

It's just now, instead of like being some random person from WatchMojo, it's an influencer.

Ryan:

There is something about like, like I'm only ever exposed to Margot Robbie on the big.

Ryan:

screen, right.

Ryan:

Or on the Netflix screen, whereas like an influencer is on all of my screens all the time, constantly.

Ryan:

And there's like that immediateness.

Ryan:

Cause also they're showing up in the apps where I communicate with my close friends and loved ones.

Ryan:

And so there is, I guess, they are more intimate to our lives than Margot Robbie.

Simran:

Well, actually, Margot Robbie's really intimate to our lives specifically.

Ryan:

No, I'm so glad you brought this up because famously the two of us did in fact go to school with Margot Robbie.

Simran:

It's true, we are like one degree away from Margot Robbie.

Ryan:

We have the same Italian teacher.

Simran:

Yeah, and supposedly we also had the same, I had the same PC teacher,

Simran:

which is like your homeroom teacher, but another girl said that of her homeroom teacher,

Simran:

so this is like, could be a rumor that it's not true, but again,

Simran:

not a fact-checking podcast and I'm going to claim it.

Ryan:

claiming Margot Robbie, but yeah, so basically in this room, Ariana Grande,

Simran:

- Absolutely. - Yes, basically.

Simran:

- Yeah, we're all big happy family right here.

Ryan:

Kate Middleton, and now Margot Robbie.

Ryan:

Um, what was she wearing at the Oscars?

Simran:

- She was wearing this beautiful black dress.

Simran:

It was a simple moment, you know,

Simran:

it was kind of shocking to see her in a simple moment at the end of like her whole Barbie press tour,

Simran:

but there was a reason for it, which I love.

Simran:

And so America Ferreira was nominated for an Oscar and it was her night, Margot Robbie was not.

Simran:

And throughout the whole entire press tour,

Simran:

America has been wearing black and white and Margot has been wearing like this incredible Barbie,

Simran:

yeah, Barbie looks.

Simran:

And I think it's beautiful because Margot came to the Oscars and was like, you know what, this is not my night.

Simran:

This is America's night.

Simran:

And this is for her, like she gets to do the Barbie moment.

Simran:

You know what I mean?

Simran:

And I love that.

Simran:

I love when people take a step back, you know, for others.

Simran:

I really enjoy that.

Simran:

And she was like in her producer moment.

Simran:

And I think that's really special and smart.

Simran:

So people are really hating on--

Simran:

[inaudible]

Ryan:

But also she gave so much during "I'm Just Ken" when Ryan Gosling had a little dance with her.

Simran:

Also, she's-- [inaudible]

Ryan:

That was so cute. And also Ncuti Gatwa was there, and the other ones, but he's my favorite Ken.

Simran:

I'd also say don't-- [inaudible]

Simran:

[laughter]

Ryan:

The other Kens, but also he was there and that's so exciting.

Ryan:

Um, other...

Ryan:

Breaking news?

Ryan:

The shoulders?

Simran:

The shoulders? The shoulders got worse.

Ryan:

Oh, the shoulders!

Ryan:

The shoulder straps were insane!

Simran:

it was more like people were hating on their shoulders, like why?

Simran:

Where we, like the straps were afraid of the shoulders. I don't get it either.

Ryan:

I don't get it. I don't get it. And I don't know what it means. Like can someone get hotlomode on this?

Ryan:

[laughing]

Simran:

Please I don't want to think anymore and I don't want to look at them anymore. Like it just was giving ill-fitting dress vibes because the rest of the dresses were beautiful. It was on Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt. Those two Oppenheimer girlies were like no straps and I was like is this something to do with Oppenheimer? Should I have watched them to understand this?

Ryan:

No, but like everyone, everyone had those lifted straps and it was just like absolutely wild.

Ryan:

I think we're done.

Simran:

I think we are done, should we check out? Have you been listening to or reading anything fun?

Ryan:

Actually, yes, I've been listening to this really interesting podcast called Shocking Heartbreaking Transformative by Jess Shane and it's like a documentary podcast about making documentary podcasts and it's not just like Jess talking about making podcasts,

Ryan:

it's her making a podcast about four people's lives, but narrativizing the process of making the documentary. And so like I've just finished episode two where she's essentially chatting to this person, like grappling with the ethical issues of her having to construct a story out

Ryan:

of this person, and like having to choose which bits to sort of mine for like content and to turn into capital. It's really fascinating, like the ethical issues at the heart of documentary filmmaking and podcasting.

Simran:

That's so funny you say that because the content that I was going to bring up

Simran:

is my favorite documentary, Love is Blind.

Ryan:

[laughter]

Ryan:

No, serio.

Simran:

No, and I would say that it was, this season was shocking, heartbreaking and transformative.

Ryan:

I would say...

Simran:

No, it was simply wild. Um, do you know what it is?

Ryan:

Completely unfamiliar with the topic.

Ryan:

[laughter]

Simran:

but basically it's a show where two people fall

Simran:

in like well people fall in love by not seeing each other you're in these pods you can't see each other you have to propose in two weeks in order to keep going with this experiment and then you have another two weeks to get married and there's no money involved isn't that so random

Simran:

no no that's crazy and I think that's where they missed out so they wanted to co-op south asian culture by doing arranged marriages but they forgot about the dowry come on girls

Ryan:

So, why are they doing it?

Simran:

Oh no, we don't like dowries. Yeah, I'd like to be clear about that.

Simran:

[laughs]

Ryan:

I have to say, Simran delivered that joke so much better on the second performance.

Simran:

Oh! [laughs]

Simran:

Well, this has been great. Thank you so much for listening.

Ryan:

It's been lovely having you. This has been broadly relevant.

Simran:

If you feel like it, we'd love for you to leave a review.

Simran:

But we'll see you next week!
