Sylvia's Background:
Sylvia Woods was born in Clay County, Kentucky, where she grew up with five siblings who taught her to be humble. Sylvia taught high school English for forty-three years in East Tennessee. Her greatest joy was teaching poetry of all forms. She encouraged her students to read poems aloud to hear the music in them. Her work has been published in many literary journals and anthologies, including Southern Poets Anthology III: Appalachia and Southern Poets Anthology VI: Tennessee. What We Take With Us is her first full-length collection. She has two children and two brilliant granddaughters.

Here’s what I want people to know...
-about poetry: Read it aloud. Read it again. If after two or three readings it doesn’t resonate, move on. Poetry is a form of song. Reading it silently is not ideal. Give poetry a chance, and don’t think you have to find “hidden meaning.” My poetry is narrative, stories about the people and experiences that matter to me.
-about teaching as a sales job: You need to be excited about what you are teaching, but you also need to be aware of your audience. If they aren’t listening, change your approach. It is your job to get the attention of the audience in order to achieve your purpose. For me, the main purpose was to get kids to understand and think for themselves.
