After resurrection, you would expect the disciples to be 100% committed. They watched Jesus die, buried Him in a tomb, and mourned Him for three days and were now eating and drinking with him. They should believe, but Matthew ends his gospel by saying, “and some doubted” (Matt. 28:17). Even after resurrection they couldn’t see it. What Jesus had just done was too big for them to get their minds around.
To help His disciples, Jesus tells them the story. Not simply the story He has lived out the last 3 years, but the full story, the one that began in a garden and will some day end in a tearless city.
When they finally get it though, everything changes. Their view of God, the world, and themselves is completely reoriented as they come to see the fullness of the story playing itself out in the life of Jesus. Jesus’ story reshapes them.
