Amy:

It's a new year and that's a great time to start new habits for your museum.

2

:

In this episode, we're diving into how

creating intentional habits can set

3

:

your museum up for success in 2025.

4

:

Let's get started.

5

:

Hello, and welcome to the

love my museum podcast.

6

:

I'm your host, Amy Kehs,

and I love museums.

7

:

I'm also a brand strategist and

communications expert for museums.

8

:

And if you're here, you're likely

part of a museum historic home.

9

:

Xu nature center.

10

:

Or other cultural institution.

11

:

And you care deeply

about helping it thrive.

12

:

And I'm so glad you're here

to kick off the year with me.

13

:

This episode marks the 25th episode.

14

:

And the first episode of 2025.

15

:

And today we're diving into a topic

that's perfect for this season

16

:

of resolutions and fresh starts

creating new habits for your museum.

17

:

These habits can help you

be more proactive at work.

18

:

Cut down on chaos.

19

:

And build a foundation for making

your museum a place that thrives.

20

:

Before we dive in.

21

:

Let me tell you a little bit

about the people first framework.

22

:

This approach focuses on four key areas

that make any museum stronger people.

23

:

Planning.

24

:

Process and practice.

25

:

And these four PS are the

building blocks of a museum's

26

:

internal communication strategy.

27

:

Where staff feels valued.

28

:

Energized and invested.

29

:

And when you build habits around these

pillars, the payoff is a stronger team.

30

:

A clear mission and a thriving museum.

31

:

Today, we'll go over each

of these a little bit.

32

:

And I'm going to give you some

ideas for habits to start.

33

:

That will strengthen each

internal communications pillar.

34

:

So the first pillar of the people

first framework, of course, is people.

35

:

I think a great.

36

:

Resolution for your museum this

year is to prioritize the people.

37

:

Prioritize, creating an

environment where your team feels

38

:

supported and heard and valued.

39

:

And when they feel supported, they

are more likely to stick around and

40

:

bring their best to your museum.

41

:

Here are three habits

that you can start today.

42

:

For the people that work in your museum.

43

:

Remember that you hired your

team because of their expertise.

44

:

So be sure to use it.

45

:

Include everyone on big

projects from the beginning.

46

:

And get their valuable input.

47

:

So, what does that mean?

48

:

The first example that comes to mind.

49

:

Is when you are starting

to plan for an exhibit.

50

:

Or plan for a program.

51

:

Make sure everyone has a seat

at the table from the beginning.

52

:

You may not think that you need

public relations until three

53

:

months before the exhibit opens.

54

:

But trust me.

55

:

Having your communications people

sitting at the table when you start.

56

:

We'll give you.

57

:

Valuable insights that

you never thought of.

58

:

It will save you work down the road.

59

:

It will save you from roadblocks

that you can't even imagine.

60

:

And that's just one example.

61

:

Everyone on your team brings a

perspective and an expertise.

62

:

So start today by making it a habit.

63

:

That everyone is included.

64

:

From the get-go.

65

:

The second habit is.

66

:

Around meetings and creating

habits for meetings.

67

:

Your people's time is valuable.

68

:

Streamline.

69

:

What kinds of meetings you have,

how often you meet and use that

70

:

time wisely, create a habit of.

71

:

Making a standard agenda so that

everyone knows what to expect.

72

:

And be sure to make a habit of recognizing

staff achievements in those meetings.

73

:

Creating these kinds

of habits for meetings.

74

:

Means that people aren't meeting the out.

75

:

It means that they.

76

:

Have time to do their actual work.

77

:

The third habit that you could start today

for the people that work in your museum.

78

:

Is to create.

79

:

Opportunities for collaboration

so that everyone feels like

80

:

they're part of something bigger.

81

:

Make it a habit to talk to your coworkers.

82

:

This might seem like

something that's easy to do.

83

:

But in a post pandemic partially

virtual work environment.

84

:

Some things that we're missing

is that collaboration time.

85

:

And so now you may need to create a habit.

86

:

To include it.

87

:

The second part of the people.

88

:

First framework is planning.

89

:

Planning is the roadmap

that keeps everyone aligned.

90

:

Without it, different departments can end

up competing for resources are working.

91

:

Toward conflicting goals.

92

:

So start the year with an

all staff planning session.

93

:

Revisit your mission, vision, and values,

and map out clear goals for the year.

94

:

This is going to look a little

different depending on your,

95

:

on the size of your museum.

96

:

I just finished doing this with

all of my consulting clients.

97

:

If you have a larger staff, be sure the

results of this planning reaches everyone.

98

:

So that.

99

:

Everyone knows the museum priorities and

everyone is working toward a common goal.

100

:

And once you have your annual

planning done that 30,000 foot view.

101

:

Then make habits around

how you'll get it done.

102

:

And how you'll keep these

priorities front and center.

103

:

Here are three.

104

:

Weighs three habits that

I helped museums do that.

105

:

The first is to schedule on your calendar,

time to plan quarterly and monthly.

106

:

Make planning a habit.

107

:

The second way is to be sure that this

planning includes actionable steps.

108

:

Really clear.

109

:

Concise.

110

:

Things that have to get done.

111

:

That you look at frequently.

112

:

So not just during those quarterly

and monthly planning sessions.

113

:

But.

114

:

Also in your weekly team meetings.

115

:

The third thing is to regularly

revisit and refine your

116

:

plans to keep them relevant.

117

:

Plans change and that's okay.

118

:

Don't give up on the habit.

119

:

Having a plan that in a roadmap

that everyone is following creates

120

:

clarity and it keeps your museum

moving in the right direction.

121

:

The third pillar is process.

122

:

Consistency is key to reducing

stress and improving efficiency.

123

:

And by creating standard

operating procedures or SOP.

124

:

Which is a workflow for a

task that you do regularly.

125

:

You can free up mental energy for

more creative and impactful work.

126

:

Some habits to build

our brown processes are.

127

:

Document the recurring tasks so

that anyone can step in and help.

128

:

Creating a habit of documenting

these recurring tasks.

129

:

So that if someone is out sick

or someone is on vacation, Things

130

:

don't fall through the cracks.

131

:

Not only helps your museum stay

moving in the right direction.

132

:

But.

133

:

It brings such peace of mind for

the employee that is responsible

134

:

for that thing to begin with.

135

:

The second habit that you

can build around processes.

136

:

Is to establish a routine for

reviewing and updating your workflows.

137

:

Put something on your calendar where

every six months you are going back

138

:

and looking at those workflows.

139

:

Updating them, if you need to update

them, make sure they're working.

140

:

Okay.

141

:

And the third habit.

142

:

Is to use a project management

tool to track progress.

143

:

There are a lot of project

management tools out there.

144

:

To choose from.

145

:

And it doesn't have to be complicated.

146

:

Processes don't have to be rigid.

147

:

They should make work

smoother and more predictable.

148

:

The fourth pillar is practice and

here's where the magic happens.

149

:

Developing habits takes practice,

whether it's fine tuning your workflows.

150

:

Actually getting things done consistency

over time is what makes new habits stick.

151

:

Here's some things that

can help with that.

152

:

Remember that mistakes

are part of the process.

153

:

Don't let them de-rail you

learn from them and keep going.

154

:

And schedule regular time to reflect on

what's working and what needs tweaking.

155

:

If something isn't working.

156

:

Don't just stop using it.

157

:

Come up with an idea on

how you can tweak the.

158

:

Habit.

159

:

And.

160

:

Make it work for you.

161

:

And lastly, remember

to celebrate your wins.

162

:

In an earlier episode, I talked about

a new hobby that I started in:

163

:

Knitting.

164

:

At first it's awkward

and full of mistakes.

165

:

But our teacher told us that we should

schedule time to practice every day.

166

:

And with practice, those

stitches become smoother.

167

:

And before you know it, you can do

it without thinking about it and

168

:

you've created something beautiful.

169

:

So those are my 12 tips that will

help you develop habits to help.

170

:

your museum.

171

:

work smarter and not harder this year.

172

:

Oh, and one last bonus, tip.

173

:

A great habit to start in January.

174

:

Is metrics.

175

:

Keeping track of your museum's

numbers is so important.

176

:

Metrics give you the low

down on how you are doing.

177

:

Where you're headed and what

needs a little extra love.

178

:

You can use the information you find

when analyzing the metrics to help you

179

:

with your museums, strategies and goals.

180

:

You probably have hunches about what

exhibitions and programs will do well.

181

:

Based on things that

you've done in the past.

182

:

Having the numbers to support those

theories can help you justify the new.

183

:

Things that you're planning.

184

:

I have a free museum.

185

:

:

customize for your museum.
