What would it take for a non-invasive, evidence-backed healing modality to become standard of care — when the evidence already exists, the mechanisms are understood, and the patients are benefiting? That's the question at the heart of this conversation with Dr. Praveen Arany, one of the world's leading researchers in photobiomodulation.
Dr. Arany started as a dentist looking for ways to help patients heal faster after oral surgery. A paper about light-accelerated wound healing caught his attention. He was skeptical. He's spent the 27 years since proving it works. He now holds six patents, has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers with more than 11,000 citations, and his lab at the University at Buffalo discovered one of the core mechanisms by which therapeutic light stimulates wound healing — a light-sensitive amino acid in the growth factor TGF-beta.
In this episode, we talk about how light interacts with the body at the cellular level, the three established mechanisms of photobiomodulation, why there's a meaningful distinction between light as a supplement and light as a clinical intervention, and why 35 randomized controlled trials haven't been enough to get this treatment into cancer wards. We also get into practice-based research networks, the case for a rigorous quantum biology journal, and what Dr. Arany thinks the next generation of practitioners and researchers needs most.
Recorded on the International Day of Light. That felt right.
