https:‘What would Toby do?’
https:Wendell repeated the four word mantra in his head,
https:looking for some measure of inner peace as he laced up his trousers.
https:He tried to push away the ever-present anger that had plagued him since he was a teenager.
https:But the truth was,
https:he wouldn’t be in this situation if he was following in the hoofsteps of his former minotaur mentor.
https:He wouldn’t have taken a leave of absence from his duties
https:unless it was for something damned important.
https:He wouldn’t have travelled hundreds of miles on a restless whim.
https:The Order of the Snow always came first in Toby’s heart.
https:And the paladin’s dedication to Aro-Remset, Panos’ god of fair battle,
https:never waivered. Since Toby would never have taken the time off to enter such a competition,
https:he wouldn’t have made it into the third round of the National Duelists Competition.
https:He wouldn’t have to weather the suspicious stares,
https:the muttered accusations of cheating.
https:He wouldn’t have to put up with the disbelief and cries of “foul”
https:every time he won a bout.
https:He wouldn’t be sitting all by himself in a tent that had been defaced with inked scrawlings
https:of ‘midget’ and ‘flea’.
https:Then again, Toby was never a wererat.
https:The tiny paladin combed claws through his short gray neck fur
https:as he stared into a little handheld mirror.
https:Perhaps an act of vanity...
https:but he convinced himself that he was just trying to present his Order in the best possible light.
https:As bad as public reaction to his participation had been thus far,
https:it would certainly get worse if he walked out onto the field of battle
https:looking like a vagabond.
https:He glanced up when he heard a faint whistle.
https:A human’s head poked through the tent flap,
https:bald as a coot but sporting a long, majestic ginger beard.
https:“Two minutes, Dervish.”
https:It was Jorry. There was nothing but respect in the Master of Ceremony’s voice.
https:He was one of the few people who knew Wendell’s history;
https:his true pedigree.
https:Most of the civilized fight aficionados of United Diben,
https:the host city for this year’s competition,
https:had no idea who the rat was.
https:But some of the veterans remembered his performances in the remote, frozen city
https:of Ice House. A decade and a half ago,
https:he was a teenage star in the ‘red circus’,
https:participating in quasi-legal bloodsports for coin and glory.
https:That was where he earned his moniker:
https:The Dervish. It was a moniker that hadn’t been spoken aloud for nearly a generation.
https:Wendell murmured,
https:“Thank you, Sir Reven.”
https:The human disappeared without another word.
https:He stared into the little square of reflective glass once more.
https:His whiskers twitched.
https:His whiplike tail made a brief appearance above his left shoulder.
https:He wished that someone far more wise than himself would give him a hint.
https:How should he handle this situation?
https:The hostile crowd, the shunning…
https:it was getting to him.
https:But he only had the man in the mirror.
https:Still… maybe a little pep-talk would settle him.
https:“You’re the worst paladin I know.”
https:Not a great start. “...
https:“...but battle is where Aro-Remset is glorified.
https:The only way to get closer to him
https:is to get closer to the edge.
https:And you need to get closer to him.
https:You need something.
https:So forget these moronic,
https:dung brained, inbred yokel wastes of space.”
https:He paused for a moment,
https:quickly reminding himself to avoid being that abusive on the tournament field.
https:“Forget them. And do what you’re best at.”
https:The wererat in the mirror stared back at him.
https:It was a dubious stare.
https:He tossed the mirror onto his bedroll with a little snarl.
https:The horn sounded, calling the competitors out for the next round.
https:Wendell plodded out into the bright sunlight.
https:The lush grass was warm between his toes.
https:Unlike most of his competitors,
https:the wererat shunned combat boots in favor of bare footpads.
https:He liked the extra traction that he gained from his hind claws gripping the soil.
https:He was far less worried about having his toes stepped on
https:than he was having his head caved in.
https:Each bout was fought with wooden practice blades.
https:It continued until the first hit was scored above the knee,
https:and excluding hands and forearms.
https:Intentionally blocking with off-limit body parts meant immediate disqualification,
https:though attempting to pin the flat of a blade to the ground with one’s foot was acceptable.
https:Leave the rope circle that defined the ring and you were disqualified,
https:though you couldn’t intentionally pick up and throw your opponent out of bounds to achieve victory.
https:As Wendell approached the clearing where battles took place,
https:the booing started.
https:He grit his teeth,
https:fangs showing white over thin black lips.
https:He didn’t want to let them know that he cared about their jibes.
https:But he lacked the self control to simply ignore his detractors.
https:He distracted himself by looking off to his right,
https:to the humble wooden booth where all of the officials sat.
https:In the center was Sir Jorry Reven,
https:a privateer who’d been knighted in multiple kingdoms for his efforts during the Harrington war.
https:He was officially retired,
https:but not a single competitor would want to face either his blade or his trident
https:if they were wielded in anger.
https:On the right was Sanabella,
https:the raven haired half elven druid
https:who served as the tournament’s safety officer and healer.
https:She was a regular at these events.
https:Even the oldest of humans had a hard time recalling a National Duelists Competition
https:that wasn’t blessed by her talented, caring hands.
https:And on the left, a far more unusual sight…
https:a massive white furred yeti.
https:Every yeti’s name was the adjective that best described them,
https:so it was somewhat of a comfort to know that this one was called
https:Observant. His crimson-rust colored eyes watched Wendell’s approach
https:with genuine curiosity.
https:Observant’s role was as the Bard of Record.
https:Sometimes the action was so quick at these events,
https:illusion was required to review critical moments.
https:Enchantments on the practice weapons
https:would let the creature know the moment that a legal hit was scored.
https:As Wendell hopped over the thick anchor-rope that defined the fighting arena,
https:a massive cheer went up.
https:He looked across the green field to see his opponent approaching.
https:He was a big human,
https:clearly a hometown favorite from the number of shoulder slaps he was receiving.
https:His short, curly brown hair bounced with each step he took.
https:His smile was enchanting.
https:His body was lithe.
https:The combatants shook hands
https:and then picked up their wooden weaponry from the judging booth.
https:The human opted for a medium kite shield
https:and curved scimitar.
https:The rat took up his small buckler
https:and a longsword nearly as long as he was tall.
https:Sir Reven announced the bout,
https:his booming voice easily reaching not only the nearby crowd,
https:but likely half of the adjacent city as well.
https:“Andre Strider versus Sir Wendell Hines.”
https:The roar of the fans upon hearing their hero’s name
https:nearly drowned out the subsequent boos when Wendell was mentioned.
https:He snarled softly,
https:but managed to restrain himself.
https:Unleashing a series of withering curses at his detractors
https:certainly wouldn’t win him any friends.
https:Instead he squared his shoulders
https:and waited for the noise to die down.
https:Sanabella raised her hand.
https:Her green eyes swept the area,
https:a last second check for any hazards or interference
https:that might endanger the participants.
https:Then her palm cut through the air and she said,
https:“Begin.” The human charged his smaller foe.
https:He spun at the last possible instant,
https:his practice scimitar just a blur as it cut through the air.
https:The man’s intent was to finish the fight quickly.
https:But there was nothing for Mr. Strider to connect with.
https:The wererat simply wasn’t there.
https:Toby once told Wendell: ‘You’re only as fast as your eyes.’
https:The big bull meant that even if you didn’t have the fastest hands in a fight,
https:you could still win.
https:You could anticipate your opponent’s moves through their body language.
https:You could distance yourself
https:or apply raw power at the right times,
https:knocking your foe off balance.
https:But it all started
https:with the eyes. Observation before offense.
https:Wendell completed his roll.
https:He started the evasion mid-spin,
https:within the fraction of a second that the human’s back was to him.
https:Claws dug into the pitch,
https:arresting his momentum.
https:Then he sprang towards the overextended warrior,
https:leading with the tip of his blade.
https:The duelists clashed,
https:human on the back foot as he barely managed to defend against the wererat’s precise strikes.
https:Just when things looked like they were about to equalize,
https:the smaller man put a sudden injection of pace and power into one of his forearm blocks.
https:There was a sharp crack as Mr. Strider’s blade
https:fragmented against Wendell’s buckler.
https:An instant later, the tip of a wooden longsword pressed gently under his chin.
https:Observant calmly announced,
https:“Touch. Sir Wendell Hines is the winner.”
https:Silence fell over the crowd.
https:The paladin expected booing to follow soon after.
https:Instead, a robust laugh split the air.
https:Andre, as good of a sport in defeat as he was in victory,
https:reached down and hauled Wendell up into the sky.
https:Holding the wererat above his head, he shouted, “Huzzah!”
https:The response from the hometown fans was instinctive.
https:“Huzzah!” Confused by his sudden altitude change and the apparent endorsement from a local hero,
https:Wendell blinked owlishly.
https:Only after a couple of seconds
https:did he gain the presence of mind to halfheartedly wave his sword in recognition.
https:A ripple of laughter passed through the crowd.
https:Once he was back on his own rear paws,
https:Mr. Strider shook his hand vigorously.
https:The lithe man said, “Well
https:now that you’ve beat me, go win this thing.”
https:His earnest reply was, “I’ll try. Thank you, sir.”
https:For the first time since he arrived at the tourney,
https:Wendell walked back to his tent without having to pin his ears back to shut out the sound of an unfriendly crowd.
https:As he was splashing some water over his face,
https:the tent flaps rustled.
https:A voice said, “Hey, that was pretty kind of Andre.”
https:The accusation was out of his maw before he could rein it in,
https:“You put him up to it, didn’t you?”
https:Sir Reven stepped into the little enclosure.
https:He said, “Not the result of course.
https:But I did mention to a couple of the lads that the crowd was giving you a rough time.”
https:“So if I happened to win, make a show of it.”
https:The bald man shrugged.
https:He said, “Well, yeah.
https:Paladins make awful villains, Sir Hines.
https:We’ll have at least a couple of heels left in the top eight though,
https:don’t you worry.” Wendell’s tail lashed uncertainly.
https:He asked, “Why do you care?”
https:The man stroked his crimson beard,
https:“Well, you want a good balance between people the crowd can cheer for and-” The rat cut him off.
https:“No. I mean, me. Why do you c-”
https:It was the human’s turn to interrupt the smaller man.
https:“Because I wasn’t always a hero, Sir Hines.
https:I dare say I know more about the pains of playing the villain than most.”
https:Wendell was left to ponder what exactly that meant
https:as the human slipped out of his tent.
https:Then it hit him: Top eight.
https:He’d made it to the quarterfinals. ---
https:“Sir Wendell Hines versus Madam Zirketh.”
https:As the pair faced off, the afternoon sun threatened to disappear behind a set of angry gray clouds.
https:Wendell supposed that darkness would suit the elven assassin just fine.
https:He immediately felt a pang of regret.
https:That kind of stereotyping wasn’t appropriate for a paladin of Aro-Remset.
https:She wasn’t necessarily an assassin.
https:She was a ‘bounty hunter’ among the wild elves of the southern forests.
https:She happened to dress all in black,
https:wield a pair of wooden short swords, and shave her head to the quick so as to leave no obvious evidence at the scene of her…
https:bounty hunting. Sanabella’s hand sliced through the air.
https:“Begin!” Both combatants quick-stepped forward,
https:meeting in the middle of the rope circle.
https:Wendell dug his hind claws into the soil,
https:bracing for the first pair of blows to meet his blade and buckler.
https:The elf’s spindly arms gave her a slight reach advantage,
https:despite possessing shorter weapons.
https:She rained down her fury,
https:probing for openings in her smaller opponent’s defenses.
https:Spying a slight change in the Lady Zirketh’s posture,
https:the wererat relaxed the grip of his feet and started to circle.
https:He made his first offensive move,
https:a lightning quick slash to the elf’s left thigh.
https:She managed to parry,
https:but just barely. She hopped back and started to circle with the paladin,
https:staying right at the limit of her effective reach.
https:The next minute was filled with blinding slashes and deft parries.
https:Each of them was attempting to just barely nick the other
https:with the tip of a blade.
https:It was a game that could swing either way
https:if given so much as a hairsbreadth of leeway.
https:Suddenly, Wendell leapt straight up into the air and thrust.
https:His arm blurred into full extension,
https:tail fluttering through the air behind him as a counterbalance.
https:Lady Zirketh fell to her knees with a groan.
https:She dropped her wooden swords and clutched her forehead in both hands.
https:Observant’s voice was uncertain.
https:“Touch? Apologies, I must summon an illusion for review.”
https:The crowd murmured in confusion.
https:It hadn’t appeared like the two combatants were in striking range of one another at the time of the
https:‘fatal’ blow. Immediately Lady Sanabella was out of her chair.
https:She walked onto the field of battle…
https:but not to tend to the wounded.
https:She grabbed an ember from the nearby fire,
https:kept stoked in case the weather turned foul
https:and torches were needed.
https:She lit an herbal stick of some sort.
https:The sweet smoke drifted through the air as she approached Wendell.
https:The druid murmured,
https:“Sorry, Sir Paladin.
https:Could you extend your arms out to your sides?”
https:Mystified, Wendell did so.
https:Sanabella passed the smudge stick over and around the wererat,
https:chanting a prayer to Del-Nekbenth all the while.
https:After a few moments, she sighed with relief.
https:She announced, loudly so that everyone would hear,
https:“Sir Wendell is not enchanted,
https:nor does he possess any enchanted items.”
https:The druid patted the rat on the shoulder
https:before moving to attend the groaning elf on the other side of the circle.
https:This just fueled the crowd’s uncertainty and curiosity,
https:at least until the yeti bard finished weaving his illusion.
https:He announced, “I have a replication of the event.
https:Please observe.” Ten feet above the battlefield, an enlarged version of Wendell and Madam Zirketh clashed.
https:Time seemed to slow as the rat took flight.
https:It was clear that his thrust would be at least a handspan short.
https:But at this speed,
https:the entire crowd saw the paladin throw his sword
https:to gain the extra inches.
https:The practice blade bounced off of his opponent’s skull,
https:rebounding right back into his waiting hand.
https:The entire exchange took a fraction of a second.
https:This time, Observant’s tone was confident.
https:“Touch. Sir Wendell Hines is the winner.”
https:The crowd was stunned.
https:The bounty hunter just smirked up at the illusionary replay,
https:shaking her head ruefully as she received a minor healing prayer for her troubles.
https:Wendell bowed to his fallen opponent,
https:and she nodded back to the victor.
https:He walked out of the ring in silence.
https:Only when he was half way back to his tent did he hear the audience break into a riotous cheer. ---
https:His dreams were haunted by specters.
https:He couldn’t identify a single face,
https:but he knew what they represented:
https:A connection to Panos that he left behind long ago.
https:A life that he could have led
https:if only he’d learned to master his anger.
https:A family that he could have had
https:if only he learned to express his love.
https:But it all felt so close.
https:If he just reached out, maybe he could touch that world.
https:A faint rustle was all it took to wake the wererat.
https:He sat up quickly in his bedroll,
https:a very real longsword pointed towards the tent flap.
https:Jorry slid back until only his face and majestic beard could be seen through the tent flap.
https:He said, “Don’t kill me Dervish, I’m unarmed.
https:Well. That’s a lie,
https:I have around five knives hidden on my person at all times.
https:You wouldn’t believe what I have to do to conceal number four…”
https:Wendell groaned. He dropped his sword, allowing it to fall onto his thin summer blanket with a muffled thud.
https:He mumbled, “What’d ya want, Sir Reven?”
https:“Actually, I was going to ask you the same thing.
https:For breakfast. What do you want for breakfast, Sir Hines?”
https:He rubbed the backs of his paws along the side of his muzzle,
https:scratching an itch and clearing the sand from his eyes.
https:Why was the Master of Ceremonies inviting him to breakfast?
https:Trouble? Intrigue?
https:He asked, “Do you moonlight as a serving wench?”
https:The big man said, “Well, yes. But that’s just for entertainment.
https:My wife likes to do some role reversal, you see. She’s a pirate lord, and I’m her waif of a cabin boy.
https:She makes me dress up in shameful silk pantaloons, and-” Wendell had the presence of mind to cut the other man off before he learned too much,
https:“Jorry. Is there some kind of trouble?”
https:The bald man shook his head briskly.
https:“No, no. I just thought you might like to share breakfast.”
https:It took a few extra moments to register in the socially inept rat’s mind:
https:Friendship. He was being friendly.
https:This is what normal people did.
https:He recalled some of his more recent lessons in manners and social grace.
https:If the other man was just being polite, he should decline.
https:But if it was a genuine offer,
https:he should say… “Yes.”
https:Jorry broke into a big smile. “Ah.
https:Good. I’ve got the fire going.”
https:Wendell glanced down.
https:He said, “I’ll be a few minutes, I need to get dressed.”
https:“You don’t have any silk pantaloons, by chance…” “Get out.”
https:The human chuckled as he retreated.
https:Minutes later, Wendell was out in the East field.
https:Little breakfast fires dotted the flat landscape.
https:Ex-competitors and diehard fans made up the majority of campers on the final day of the contest.
https:Before their morning tea water was even boiled,
https:the human and the wererat
https:encountered a pair of those fans.
https:Two little urchins scampered up to their fire,
https:practice swords at the ready.
https:Wendell wasn’t surprised.
https:Jorry was somewhat of a legend around these parts, and the kids loved him.
https:What did surprise him
https:was when the lads made a detour.
https:Two miniature swords were thrust in front of his face.
https:The slightly taller one said,
https:“Please there mister,
https:would’ya make yer mark?” The smaller lad hopped up and down.
https:“Yes, yes mister, and then me too please?”
https:Wordlessly, Sir Reven held a little knife out to the wererat.
https:He seemed to produce it from nowhere at all.
https:Slightly stunned by this turn of events,
https:Wendell carefully carved his mark into the hilts of the small practice swords.
https:The boys vibrated in place as he finished,
https:so excited it seemed like they might pop at any moment.
https:The bigger lad said, “Thanks, Sir Rat.”
https:Then he charged off,
https:waving his little sword in the air.
https:The smaller one started to run after him,
https:but impulsively turned back
https:and hugged Wendell first.
https:“Thanks!” he piped, and then followed his companion towards their next adventure.
https:Jorry took his knife back.
https:He chuckled, “First fans?”
https:“Yeah.” The big human dumped some tea into their little pot.
https:He predicted, “Won’t be your last.”
https:They shared black tea,
https:trail bread, and boiled eggs.
https:The pair talked about the weather,
https:and what they would be doing later in the season.
https:Nothing of consequence was discussed,
https:which suited them both just fine.
https:As the sun started to rise over the eastern treeline,
https:Wendell said, “I think I found my answer.”
https:Jorry poured the dregs of the tea into his mug. “Hmmm?”
https:“When I don’t know what in the hells I’m doing,
https:I ask myself, ‘What would Toby do?’
https:I’ve been asking that a lot this week.”
https:“Oh, aye. And what’s the answer?”
https:Wendell pointed a claw towards the kids, who were still running around nearby campsites and showing off their newly marked blades.
https:“He would do this.
https:Exactly this. And he’d do it for them.”
https:Sir Reven gave him a half smile.
https:He asked, “Do you think he’d win the whole thing?”
https:“I think he’d damn well try.” ---
https:“For your first semi-final match of the day.
https:Saramis versus Sir Wendell Hines!”
https:A hush fell over the crowd.
https:The lizardman that approached from the far end of the dueling field was legendary.
https:Saramis was known as
https:The Marble Killer.
https:Not just because of the beautiful blend of deep green and light teal that graced his scales.
https:And not just because of his pedigree as a soldier.
https:But also for his stoney silence and toughness.
https:He wore only a pair of shorts,
https:leaving the rest of his well sculpted body on display as a form of intimidation.
https:Wendell tried to shake the nerves out of his system.
https:He rolled his shoulders,
https:he flexed his fuzzy legs.
https:When they went to collect their weapons, he tried not to focus on the fact that his opponent’s tower shield was taller than the wererat himself.
https:At least both of them were wielding longswords with about the same reach.
https:Sanabella examined the ring as the fighters took their places.
https:Satisfied that nothing was amiss,
https:her hand sliced through the air.
https:“Begin.” Nobody moved.
https:Wendell half expected his opponent to charge across the field of battle,
https:massive shield leading.
https:Apparently the lizardman predicted an all out attack from his fast, agile foe. Both were
https:demonstrably wrong.
https:Eventually the combatants closed the distance;
https:engaging in a mutual,
https:cautious creep towards the center of the ring.
https:Saramis repelled his opponent’s offense with shocking ease.
https:His tower shield essentially cut off
https:half of the paladin’s attack routes.
https:On his other side,
https:deft swordsmanship and easy power held up,
https:even under the most deceptive of attacks from his small foe.
https:And after every exchange,
https:the lizardman scooted forward,
https:cutting off more of the ring.
https:Wendell found himself starving for room to maneuver.
https:He had to expend energy to get out of tight spots,
https:sprinting or rolling into more open areas of the ring.
https:But, as inevitable as the tide,
https:The Marble Killer walked him down
https:and pressured him.
https:Twice, a snap of the lizardman’s tail nearly took his head off.
https:He almost skidded over the rope boundary when a teep kick found his buckler
https:and sent the rat tumbling head over heels.
https:After a few minutes of this kind of oppressive pressure,
https:he felt drained, tired...
https:trapped. It was time to gamble.
https:He feigned a tiny stumble,
https:trying to bait a thrust.
https:Instead, a third tail swipe cut through the air.
https:The wererat modified his plan on the fly.
https:He spun towards the incoming blow.
https:Tailtip was met with a bruising shield block.
https:Saramis ignored the pain,
https:lunging to launch an efficient,
https:brutal thrust at his small foe.
https:But Wendell arrested his torque
https:with dug-in claws and sheer will.
https:His momentum reversed as he executed a backspin parry.
https:As the two combatants moved past each other,
https:the wererat angled his arm up
https:and out in a completely blind side thrust.
https:The tip of his wooden sword barely brushed against the scales of his opponent’s thigh.
https:And yet the lizardman screamed as if he’d been completely impaled by a pike.
https:Some pain transcended the physical.
https:A yeti’s calm rumble announced,
https:“Touch. Sir Wendell Hines wins.”
https:Saramis was half way out of the ring before Observant finished his sentence.
https:The audience roared.
https:A chant, led by a few incorrigible young lads waving little practice swords,
https:swept through the crowd.
https:Soon it was amplified by the adults and elders in attendance:
https:“Dervish! Dervish!”
https:Once Wendell caught his breath,
https:he had the good grace to bow towards the judge’s booth.
https:Then he turned towards the cheering crowd.
https:His tail writhed like an overjoyed snake
https:as he saluted his new fans with a deft en garde.
https:Then he turned to leave the ring,
https:ears shied back to muffle the deafening cheers.
https:He nearly didn’t make it back to his tent,
https:blinded as he was by the happy tears that he was so desperately trying to hide. --- Wendell’s
https:mind floated in the ether.
https:This kind of inner peace was a rarity, to say the least.
https:Most of his meditations were turbulent attempts to contain his inner rage.
https:But this time, he was one with nothing.
https:A rustling caused his left ear to twitch.
https:He murmured, “Which one is it?”
https:Sir Reven said, “The minotaur.”
https:The wererat nodded, ever so slowly.
https:The bigger man said, “Not gonna be easy, this one.
https:He’s not a mean lad, but he hits like a runaway caravan.” “Mmmm hmmm.”
https:Sir Reven scowled at the paladin’s non-committal reply.
https:He barked, “So yer just gonna roll over and die?” “Mmmm-mmm.”
https:The ex-pirate threw his hands in the air,
https:touching the fabric that made up the roof of the little tent.
https:“Well then you have to get worked up!
https:You want to win, don’t you?”
https:Wendell’s eyes opened, just a fraction.
https:He smiled at his new friend.
https:“This is an experience I’ll never forget.
https:Either way, I’ve already won.” ---
https:“Contesting the Finals:
https:Sir Abner MacDougal versus
https:Sir Wendell Hines.”
https:The good natured handshake was almost comical.
https:Sir Abner’s massive, fuzzy hand covered Wendell’s wrist and part of his forearm.
https:In one respect, the paladin had been right.
https:In the crowd’s eyes,
https:there would be no loser.
https:The massive minotaur,
https:a towering brown furred warrior from Tater Town,
https:was beloved all over northern Panos.
https:His knighthood was granted due to his humanitarian efforts
https:among the homeless populations of several cities.
https:He was an accomplished stage actor in addition to being a fierce swordsman.
https:So if he beat the rising star of a rat,
https:nobody would weep too much.
https:Not even Wendell.
https:The paladin felt strangely calm as he reached for his sword and shield.
https:He couldn’t ignore the fact that his opponent’s two handed sword was incredibly long;
https:easily his height and half again.
https:But he wasn’t intimidated.
https:If anything he felt inspired.
https:Excited. Alive. They took their places inside the rope ring,
https:awaiting the druid’s signal.
https:“Begin!” Whoosh! The wooden claymore’s blunt tip came within a handspan of his muzzle.
https:His opponent’s reach was massive,
https:encompassing a significant portion of the fighting area at any given time.
https:And Sir Abner was anything but slow.
https:He controlled the momentum of his swing
https:and pulled back into guard position before the wererat could have possibly closed the distance.
https:This was going to be a problem.
https:Wendell stayed light on his toes,
https:dancing just inside the outer third of the rope circle.
https:He spun his sword and cocked his arm back,
https:as if contemplating throwing his blade.
https:The minotaur was having none of it.
https:A horizontal swipe at neck level
https:forced the wererat to dive and roll,
https:tucking his tail behind one of his thighs lest it get caught by the ferocious blow.
https:He recovered his feet quickly
https:and tried to charge into range before his opponent could kill the momentum of his swing.
https:Too slow. He sucked in his breath when he saw the thrust coming.
https:All he could do was skid to a halt and raise his buckler.
https:The sheer force of the strike slammed the edge of his little shield into his chin.
https:Then he was airborne.
https:Dazed from the indirect strike to the jaw, time seemed to slow down around Wendell.
https:A blackness crept in around the edges of his vision.
https:But inside of that dark haze
https:was a familiar face.
https:Toby. Suddenly, they were sitting on the porch of The Order of the Snow’s practice yard
https:back in Ice House.
https:Master and student
https:watched two of the Order’s most advanced duelists clash.
https:Toby leaned over and whispered,
https:“Where’s the fastest blade?”
https:Wendell tried to analyse the combatants.
https:He watched their hand speed, their eyes,
https:their tactical adjustments. Still,
https:he couldn’t tell which of them was fastest.
https:“I don’t know, Master.”
https:Then he felt a giant finger turning his chin.
https:Toby looked him in the eye
https:and shook his horned head.
https:He reached over with his free hand
https:and tapped his student right between the eyes.
https:“It’s up here, Wendell.
https:The fastest blade
https:is in the mind.” Reality rushed in as quickly as the ground.
https:The wererat tumbled.
https:Then he dug his claws into the grass,
https:barely managing to avoid skidding out of the circle.
https:His shield arm felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.
https:His back felt like one big bruise.
https:And his jaw didn’t feel like it fit quite right on the front of his face.
https:But he was smiling.
https:He charged in once more.
https:It was as if he’d learned nothing from his first attempt,
https:and needed another lesson.
https:Sir Abner obliged.
https:This time, the thrust was aimed dead center,
https:right at the paladin’s breastbone.
https:Even a second miraculous block from his opponent would send the small creature tumbling out of the ring.
https:Wendell leapt. Just like last time,
https:the minotaur’s claymore was held horizontal.
https:He felt his small foot find purchase
https:and churned his legs.
https:Before it really registered in his opponent’s mind,
https:the small paladin sprinted up the flat of the blade.
https:He dragged his longsword over Sir Abner’s shoulder,
https:then tumbled gracelessly over the bull’s back,
https:landing in a heap.
https:Observant shouted, “Touch!
https:Rules review?” The minotaur let out a hearty laugh.
https:He was shaking his great head,
https:as if he already knew the answer.
https:From flat on his back,
https:a breathless Wendell sputtered,
https:“Pinning… pinning with…”
https:Sparing him the effort,
https:Sir Reven quoted the rule in question,
https:“Attempting to pin the flat of a blade to the ground with one’s foot is perfectly legal.”
https:Sanabella started laughing.
https:Several people in the crowd joined her,
https:even as the applause started.
https:Before he could be completely drowned out,
https:Observant announced, “Sir Wendell Hines wins!”
https:A massive brown furred hand reached down to help the wererat
https:back to his feet.
https:The minotaur rumbled,
https:“How many of you do you think it would take to pin my blade to the ground, little paladin?”
https:Wendell, still shaking from the effort,
https:held onto Sir Abner’s wrist for support.
https:He guessed, “Three or four?”
https:The big bull snorted and patted him on the back.
https:“Half a dozen. At least.”
https:Once again, Wendell felt himself being lifted into the air.
https:This time, he was ready.
https:He held his wooden longsword aloft,
https:looked out into the cheering crowd,
https:and unleashed a fierce little chitter.
https:It was the victory cry
https:of a most unlikely champion.
