How does a mom ever sit down when she's cooking, shopping, wrapping, and decorating? What traditions are worth committing to? How do you get all of your children in the same place to celebrate when they're grown and have moved away? Does it matter that everything is just right, homemade, and picture-perfect? All of these questions Christian moms have are answered in this light-hearted, fun conversation with Betsy, Jen, Emily, and Stephanie! Listen in to hear some creative solutions!
They're the joyful agains our children shout on the swings, the
2
:exhausting agains of cooking and laundry,
and the difficult agains of discipline.
3
:So much of what we do
as mothers is on repeat.
4
:So what if we woke up with clarity,
knowing which agains we were called
5
:to, and went to bed believing we
are faithful in what matters most?
6
:We believe God's word is
the key to untangle from the
7
:confusion and overwhelm we feel.
8
:Let's look up together to embrace a
motherhood full of freedom and joy.
9
:Thanks for joining us for another
episode of the again, podcast.
10
:I'm your host, Stephanie Hickox.
11
:And this is brought to you
by entrusted ministries.
12
:I'm bringing you another section of.
13
:Are fun and helpful practical.
14
:At times even humbling.
15
:Coversation that?
16
:Betsy Corning.
17
:Emily DEO and Jen Frackman
and I had recently about our
18
:favorite Christmas traditions.
19
:In this section, we're talking
about our favorite recipes.
20
:Discerning which traditions
you should commit to.
21
:And my favorite new family
tradition that actually helps me
22
:relax and slow down with my kids.
23
:And Betsy is going to share
about her new family tradition
24
:called the week of a weeks.
25
:That might be your family's new solution.
26
:To avoiding all of the
scheduling conflicts.
27
:If you have older children
And children that are married.
28
:There's something for
moms of young children.
29
:And grown children.
30
:We hope this.
31
:brings some wisdom and fun to your day.
32
:Betsy: I just wanted to mention a
sweet, very simple way to have a
33
:devotion, and we've done a variety of
things, but this year, my husband talked
34
:about songs that he's been listening
to recently, worship songs, and he
35
:read the words of about six of them
and it was Worshipful and peaceful.
36
:And then, he actually teared up
because just the meaning of the words.
37
:And then we sang a couple of them.
38
:Obviously you can talk about
the meanings of the song.
39
:Now, a lot of people are doing that, but
if you don't even do that, just listening,
40
:to the words and what's really sweet.
41
:Jen: We do something similar
where we will put the,
42
:Sing along lyrics on the TV.
43
:So I'll search on my phone for a Christmas
song that has the sing along lyrics, and
44
:then we'll put it on the TV and we, sit by
the fire And the kids can read it, even if
45
:they don't know the lyrics to all of it.
46
:And we, we do the same thing.
47
:We talk about the lyrics and, that in
the morning, we do homeschool light most
48
:of December anyway, but so each of the
mornings before Christmas, we do that
49
:for our homeschool and the kids love it.
50
:In fact, they've been asking,
when do we get to do the hymn
51
:sing and the Christmas carols?
52
:And it's very sweet.
53
:It's a nice time.
54
:Emily: That's so sweet.
55
:Betsy: love
56
:it.
57
:Mm-Hmm.
58
:I love both of those ideas.
59
:I am such a proponent for dwelling on
the richness of the lyrics and also.
60
:Returning to what the saints
and the believers said over
61
:the years and over generations.
62
:We were actually watching something
right before this, I think it
63
:was called worship and the word.
64
:With a Shane and Shane
on right now, media.
65
:So often.
66
:Churches have a free subscription
to that, that they offer.
67
:And they were different segments that
talking about in scripture, the history
68
:of why Jesus came and then connecting
that to a, him with each segment.
69
:That was a sweet.
70
:Opportunity for younger children to watch.
71
:And Betsy re in the last few years, you've
started a new tradition with your family
72
:that I really want you to share because.
73
:I love how you don't give up on
making things really special as
74
:your children get older and that
you find a way to include the whole
75
:family and get them all together.
76
:Can you share what the Corning
crew does for Thanksgiving
77
:and Christmas celebrations?
78
:Betsy: I just had 20 people
at my house for 8 days.
79
:And Thanksgiving wasn't as hard as
all the other 3 meals a day because
80
:somebody in that group is always hungry.
81
:oh, it was really crazy, but...
82
:Since we've moved here and we're
sort of centrally located, we had six
83
:different people from six different
states coming, but we just started the
84
:tradition last year of having the entire
family in over the week of Thanksgiving.
85
:And you know, we're kind
of, on our own for Christmas.
86
:I mean, we'll, we'll make another plan.
87
:We'll go and visit, uh, somebody else
or, you know, or not, I don't know.
88
:But, uh, this has just turned out to
be what we call the week of all weeks.
89
:And, we go all out And, I will
do some shopping in advance.
90
:So I should warn you, We do
the Christmas and Thanksgiving
91
:together in that eight days.
92
:It's just crazy.
93
:And it's a wonderful, crazy.
94
:We love it.
95
:My husband has one rule that
he puts on the refrigerator.
96
:Grandpa's rule.
97
:If you open a drink, you must
finish it before you take
98
:another drink of something else.
99
:And we went through so
many, oh my goodness.
100
:But, I do a little bit of shopping,
maybe before Thanksgiving.
101
:You know, One or two of those days we're
going to go out as a group and we'll go
102
:out as different groups out of that 20.
103
:We don't go as one big mob.
104
:we'll break up and we'll go this
direction or we'll go this direction
105
:or the guys will stay home and
fish or play ball with the kids.
106
:And we just have so much fun because
we actually buy the presents with them.
107
:And.
108
:I just can't even explain it.
109
:It is, makes it so easy to get the
gifts and so helpful and you're
110
:getting exactly what they want.
111
:You're not having to return it.
112
:And I do take them home and wrap them.
113
:They don't necessarily
know that I'm buying that.
114
:I'll see that they like, you know,
a few things, but then, so this is
115
:different than the envelope years.
116
:That was younger years.
117
:Now it's crazy because we
have so many, many people.
118
:And, um, we really love it.
119
:So when they come in for that week
of Thanksgiving, I put a, um, master
120
:schedule up on the refrigerator.
121
:So they kind of know, Hey, we're going to
go to Zoolumination on this night, which.
122
:is unbelievable.
123
:we just went to it.
124
:It was absolutely breathtaking
in the Nashville area.
125
:WE just all walked around the zoo
for a couple of hours at night
126
:and The display was just beyond.
127
:It was just all this artwork done on these
sort of wire frames and then put beautiful
128
:colored fabrics all over them to create
just Anything you could possibly think of.
129
:just mean, it was just beyond.
130
:I looked at one little piece and thought
it would take me a whole year to make
131
:that and there's just thousands and
thousands oh, it's just unbelievable.
132
:And we did tournaments.
133
:So then they had sign up for tournaments.
134
:There were a signup sheet on the
refrigerator for about 12 different
135
:tournaments that if they wanted to
take part in, Did and we always play
136
:one gigantic game with everybody.
137
:We play Scattergories and we play another
trading little gift game thing that I
138
:come up with and we do that all together.
139
:But we do call it the Week of All
Weeks because it's absolutely the best.
140
:And, we're just going to
make that an annual thing.
141
:it's just turned out to be the answer.
142
:And you know, when you, when things
are difficult and you're like,
143
:how are we going to solve this?
144
:And this just seems to
be the solution for us.
145
:For a while we had, you know, our married
kids would spend a part of the day
146
:with us and then they'd go and they'd
spend it with their other relatives.
147
:Well, Now they can spend Thanksgiving
with us and Christmas with them.
148
:And we're not, they're not torn
apart in the middle of the day
149
:or to two Thanksgiving dinners.
150
:And it just solved a lot of things for us.
151
:And I think it's going to be
152
:going on for a long time.
153
:Emily: love this, Betsy.
154
:I was writing everything down that you
said because I want to, remember this.
155
:How did you arrive at this
decision as your children were
156
:older and they had families and
everybody was just kind of torn?
157
:was this your solution to fix that?
158
:Betsy: That's a good question.
159
:I, lived in Chicago for a long time and
all of our kids lived in the Chicago area
160
:with us, with all within a half an hour.
161
:Then my daughter moved to Wisconsin.
162
:One of my sons moved to Texas and
the other one moved to Tennessee.
163
:And then we had some of the kids
go to college out in Virginia.
164
:And, uh, my daughter in
law's parents lived in.
165
:Ohio, and they still lived in Illinois.
166
:So I knew that if I stayed in Illinois,
I it would be too, too difficult
167
:for my son's family from Texas to
get up there with three children.
168
:and it Was just so far.
169
:then Luke would have to come
from Tennessee and then I would
170
:have everybody at my house.
171
:But now since, one of my sons lives here,
we have two houses and we kind of can go
172
:back and forth between the two houses too
and divide the people, you know, so, uh, I
173
:don't have 20 people sleeping in my house.
174
:I have 11 and that helps
to have two houses here.
175
:But when I had the reality check of.
176
:Nobody will be coming for
Thanksgiving if I stay here.
177
:I just decided we're gonna move
centrally and since my daughter's kids
178
:were really college age, we decided
to go with the next group of grandkids
179
:you know, they're gonna grow up
really fast and then I don't know what
180
:might happen in a few years, but this
181
:just really worked out to be the great
182
:solution for us for this time.
183
:That sounds like such an
epic, epic experience.
184
:Definitely something that the
grandkids are never going to forget.
185
:I really love how you solved.
186
:The scheduling conflicts there and your
grandkids are ages six to 21 right now.
187
:Is that right?
188
:Betsy: Yes, Anna will
be 22 in about a week.
189
:Emily: Oh, what a great solution to all
of the, divide and conquer with time.
190
:And that's such a great solution.
191
:I've never, I've actually
never heard anybody do.
192
:this before.
193
:I love it.
194
:My wheels are
195
:spinning.
196
:Stephanie: Emily's already
thinking 20 years ahead.
197
:Betsy: think this is only the second year
that we've done it, but we're already
198
:getting traditions and they start out
early in the morning, so . They've
199
:been driving all day, so, we are all
out on the front yard, jumping up and
200
:down, waving them in when they come.
201
:And then we put, make a
big paper run through.
202
:for, um, their little boy to run through.
203
:it is so cute, but yeah, that's a
tradition that I had the hardest
204
:time putting that thing up this year.
205
:And I'm like, what am I doing?
206
:Am I going to be able
to do this every year?
207
:I don't know.
208
:Maybe, maybe this one won't be a
tradition, but cause I had to put it like
209
:not just over a door, but like a big door.
210
:You know, an open area,
coming into the house.
211
:So that was tricky.
212
:Jen: How did you hang
213
:Betsy: I taped it with
duct tape on the sides.
214
:not on the paint of the wall,
but on some trim on the sides.
215
:And welcome,
216
:you made it or something like that on it.
217
:And then
218
:He runs
219
:Emily: cute.
220
:Stephanie: Yeah, that's a
really, a sweet picture.
221
:Betsy: Well, we also
do our, family picture.
222
:It was always just impossible.
223
:But now, this is just a thing
that we schedule every year.
224
:We can do our family picture
because we are all together.
225
:And that is that is
another nice thing we get.
226
:Accomplished.
227
:But I do feel in some ways like
Thanksgiving is being squeezed out with
228
:all the commercialism that is starting
earlier and earlier and earlier.
229
:So we really do want to recognize, both.
230
:And, we just had so much fun this week
231
:together.
232
:Just being together.
233
:Staying up late and
234
:playing games and all that stuff.
235
:Reading bible stories to
my little bitty grands and
236
:all those things.
237
:Just
238
:sweet.
239
:Emily: lots of laughter, I'm sure, too.
240
:Betsy: And now lots of laundry.
241
:I'm finding things all
242
:over the house.
243
:I
244
:there was a movie that came out last year
and we went to see it, uh, called It's
245
:Christmas Again and it had some sweet
music in it It's interesting take
246
:about a guy who's maybe college age.
247
:Maybe it's high school age.
248
:And it's done with modern music.
249
:He, something happens and he goes back
in time and there's dancing with the
250
:shepherds and everything like that.
251
:So it's a modern twist on some things, but
really cute and the music is really nice.
252
:It's modern for the kids.
253
:We really enjoyed that.
254
:It's Christmas again.
255
:Good meaning behind it.
256
:And Mary sings a beautiful lullaby.
257
:Oh, I'll have to check that one out.
258
:I haven't seen it.
259
:One that I insist on watching.
260
:Christmas Eve, if
possible is the naitivity.
261
:And I think it was done.
262
:Maybe 10, 15 years ago, but there's
some really tender moments between
263
:Mary and Joseph, but I think they
displayed really beautifully.
264
:, so that one has to be in the mix for us.
265
:Jen: My kids Like the movie The Star.
266
:A good one for little ones.
267
:Betsy: hmm.
268
:Stephanie: And it's funny
269
:Jen: Yeah.
270
:Stephanie: Of course, It's a
Wonderful Life is, a timeless
271
:tradition, but it's funny you think.
272
:You just assume, oh, it's an old movie,
it's such a classic, it's totally safe
273
:for kids, and then you realize, oh, there
are a couple suggestions you might want
274
:to fast forward through, always surprises
275
:Emily: You view it very
differently when there's
276
:little eyes,
277
:Watching and just the whole idea of
that movie and it is a wonderful movie.
278
:Truly.
279
:All right.
280
:I think we should transition
to talking about our favorite
281
:tried and true Christmas recipes.
282
:What are the things that your family is
counting on you making this Christmas?
283
:Emily: We do have our cookies we make
every year, but I can't recommend them
284
:because they're not on a Pinterest board.
285
:They're just my grandma's recipe
that has been passed down, years.
286
:And so when I think Christmas,
I can even smell them right now
287
:because that's what she made.
288
:Every year among other things, but
the sugar cookies So I can't really
289
:recommend them because they're
not floating anywhere out there.
290
:Stephanie: Are really
soft or are they a little
291
:Emily: It's all in how you roll the dough
and it has to be just the right thickness
292
:so they don't get hard and you have to
bake them for eight minutes exactly.
293
:The icing is the hardest part though
because it was just, it was the powdered
294
:sugar, butter, and a little bit of
almond, And that consistency is so hard,
295
:to get it
296
:just right.
297
:So that's
298
:the hardest part.
299
:Betsy: kind of
300
:runny and then you, do you do the whole
outlining and then the filling in?
301
:Oh my goodness, that's a ton of work.
302
:And how do you outline?
303
:You have a piping thing,
304
:Emily: I do have a piping thing, but
I have to say some years I'm just
305
:not getting the consistency right.
306
:And some years I've just kind of,
dunked the first half in the icing and
307
:then pulled it up and it's like a glaze.
308
:But Evelyn is mastering the
piping down pretty beautifully.
309
:So, we're getting it.
310
:But that's the hardest part is the
icing, but the flavor's always there,
311
:they just might not always look
312
:beautiful.
313
:Laughter.
314
:Laughter.
315
:Betsy: bringing back so many memories.
316
:We make, and it's the simplest thing
317
:in the world, is peppermint bark.
318
:And, just you buy the guitared
white chocolate chips and buy
319
:some peppermint canes that you
crunch up, or you can buy it.
320
:already crunched even, and that's it.
321
:I just put in a tiny bit of...
322
:It doesn't even need vanilla, it's
already in there, but you can add vanilla.
323
:the consistency of the chocolate
to and then put it in the
324
:refrigerator and break it apart.
325
:It's the easiest thing.
326
:And so we make that a lot.
327
:You can put a layer of
chocolate on it if you
328
:want to underneath,
329
:But, and lots of cookies.
330
:I'm always fun,
331
:Stephanie: Mm my kids love to pipe we
don't do like a royal icing, we do more
332
:of a buttercream, but they love to pipe
with the piping bags otherwise it's
333
:exhausting to do the whole process by
yourself and, I love seeing how proud they
334
:are as they're frosting their own cookies
the birthday cake for Jesus is my number
335
:one, recipe that we just have to do that.
336
:A lot of times it's chocolate.
337
:I have a couple gluten free or paleo
chocolate cakes that we like a lot.
338
:And, sometimes I've even let them have
like scrambled eggs and birthday cake for
339
:Jesus as a Christmas morning breakfast.
340
:Betsy: Uh, uh, uh, uh, mm,
341
:Stephanie: I really like to make
a French toast casserole the night
342
:before and then put that in while
we're opening presents and that makes
343
:for such a peaceful Christmas morning
and I keep My son that's a little bit
344
:more introverted than my other three
and he's a little bit of a night owl
345
:he often helps me as I'll send the others
to bed and he'll help me make a French
346
:toast casserole and he does a great job.
347
:There's a creme brulee one I like and then
a berry sourdough one which it doesn't
348
:call for sourdough bread but I changed
it to sourdough and then I used oat milk
349
:and it turned out pretty great recently.
350
:Jen: We do a charcuterie tray and
I like it because I am not stuck
351
:to making one specific thing.
352
:They just know that there's
going to be a spread on it.
353
:And so I enjoy that because I can be
creative each year and be like what
354
:do I want to put in at this year?
355
:What is fun for this part?
356
:We do have, we make a
Christmas birthday cake.
357
:And we'll do, I do a French toast
bake, that type of thing as well.
358
:But throughout the day, we
just munch as the day goes on.
359
:And so then we'll have a.
360
:I sit down breakfast and then the rest of
the day we just munch and, but my favorite
361
:is just not having to feel the pressure as
much of Oh, it has to be this one thing.
362
:whatever is easy in that moment.
363
:I had a friend years ago tell me that she
was always careful to make a tradition.
364
:that she knew she could keep.
365
:And I was like, that's a wise word.
366
:If it's something that's going to
be just taking too much time and
367
:energy and drains you, then that's
not life giving for you either.
368
:And she had mentioned that.
369
:Her grandma always made special
blueberry muffins and so she tried to
370
:do that, but she's like, there were
some years where Costco blueberry
371
:muffins were put in the fold and
they were still blueberry muffins.
372
:And I just, I find that so
peaceful for me to remember yes.
373
:It's okay if it doesn't work out when
the baby is little and nursing, or it's a
374
:hectic year that it's the being together.
375
:But if the blueberry muffins was a special
thing, then let Costco make it that year.
376
:If it's too hard, you know, you still
have them, but Costco can do it.
377
:But I do, I aspire towards
that and I love that?
378
:if I'm feeling overwhelmed
to be like, okay.
379
:Can we do that?
380
:Still has the memory behind
it, but that might not be so
381
:hard on me.
382
:Emily: Yes.
383
:Stephanie: Jen, that's such a wise word.
384
:About counting the cost of the traditions
that we commit to, and one year, so
385
:embarrassing, I served my mother in
law frozen pizza, not even good frozen
386
:pizza but frozen pizza for our Christmas
dinner because And I don't like pizza.
387
:It's so weird, but you know, you're
planning for so many different things.
388
:And I had our Christmas and
our Christmas Eve planned.
389
:And then we were going to
have other family in town.
390
:and then she came early.
391
:we went shopping that day and
shopping took longer than we expected.
392
:And then I was maybe we can just
go to Costco and buy a pot pie.
393
:And we're standing in line with the pot
pie And realizing, oh my goodness, this
394
:takes forever to bake And, it's already
getting late and what are we going to do?
395
:And and it ended up being a frozen pizza.
396
:And so now we laugh about it as I'm
trying to make everything lovely,
397
:like, yeah, I remember that one year
you served me pizza for Christmas.
398
:Betsy: it takes a lot of planning
to have guests, not just for a meal,
399
:Stephanie: Mm hmm.
400
:Betsy: Several days.
401
:And I know that thinking ahead on this,
we probably all shop at Costco, but,
402
:You get that certificate
for, to spend at one point.
403
:And so I saved that up and I'm
like, this is our groceries for
404
:that week, because it would be
such a jolt to the shopping budget.
405
:And it really took David and I all day.
406
:Cause I'm making up this gigantic list and
thinking of all the different meals that
407
:I'm going to make, many different meals.
408
:And we did go out a couple of times,
but I mean, I, I was ready for them
409
:to stay about three more days, but
410
:Jen: Mm-Hmm.
411
:Betsy: It's like, you, you can't
even really completely plan for that.
412
:really can't go out.
413
:It's just it's, you're all in and
you have to be going, going, going.
414
:But it was.
415
:It's crazy fun and of
course, you know, they help,
416
:Jen: mm
417
:Emily: Absolutely.
418
:It's all worth it to be with family.
419
:The work And the hours that
you put in, it's all worth it.
420
:And it's worth it for our kids when we put
the extra effort in to make the memories.
421
:it looks different every year as they age.
422
:Um, Traditions change and it really makes
it all the sweeter because we just kind
423
:of flow with that, that need is that year.
424
:But really the important thing
is just being together and having
425
:just sweet memories made and time spent.
426
:Stephanie: We instituted
Yalobakaflod a couple years ago,
427
:do any of you do it?
428
:Betsy: no, we don't know
429
:what it is.
430
:Emily: don't
431
:Stephanie: And I, I am pretty sure
that's the correct pronunciation.
432
:I did look it up last year.
433
:Jalabakaflod.
434
:It is an Icelandic tradition
where on Christmas Eve, they
435
:exchange chocolate and books.
436
:And I have decided I, I just love
it because in all of the busyness of
437
:the traditions and making everything
special and feeding everyone, I
438
:feel like sometimes at the end
of it, did I just sit with them?
439
:Did I just enjoy it?
440
:You even when putting together
the Lego sets with them, it's
441
:like you're still doing something.
442
:I just want to relax with them.
443
:And so what we do, sometimes we do
it the night before Christmas Eve and
444
:sometimes on Christmas Eve, depending
on how our traveling schedule works out.
445
:But I buy a special book for each of
the kids and then give them chocolate.
446
:And, you know, maybe it's
their favorite chocolate bar.
447
:And sometimes I'll make chocolate
lava or homemade hot chocolate and
448
:Then, as they're getting older,
they'll read on their own for a while.
449
:I'll even read a book that I want
to read without being interrupted.
450
:And, it's just a sweet time, And
we'll be in our, Christmasy pajamas.
451
:And when they're younger, buying
like a treasury, like Madeline's
452
:the Treasury, the whole, all of the
books in one, or the Kevin Henkes
453
:books in one, It's been special.
454
:And so I would recommend to any moms
that feel like, where is the peace
455
:in all of this, in the busyness.
456
:And it is, it would be a hard thing
to do when your kids are really
457
:little and can't sit for too long.
458
:So I, I'm.
459
:Excited that I found out about it when
my kids were old enough to just rest
460
:on the couch for a while together.
